Information Quality On The World Wide Web: A User Perspective, Jaikrit Kandari

Department of Industrial and Management Systems Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Information Quality has emerged as an important measure for the success of Information Systems. At the same time the World Wide Web has established itself as the key infrastructure for information administration, exchange, and publication. Users are getting information from the web at the click of a button however they must filter sub-standard information before they can use quality content. Researchers have aimed to address this problem by suggesting various information quality frameworks. Research till date has seen twenty important Information Quality (IQ) frameworks emerge. These models though varied in their approach and application share a number of characteristics regarding …

Prolegomenon On The Status Of The Hopey, Changey Thing In American Criminal Justice, Frank O. Bowman Iii Dec 2010

Prolegomenon On The Status Of The Hopey, Changey Thing In American Criminal Justice, Frank O. Bowman Iii

Faculty Publications

This is an introductory essay to Volume 23, Number 2, of the FEDERAL SENTENCING REPORTER, which considers the state of American criminal justice policy in 2010, two years after the "Change" election of 2008. Part I of the essay paints a statistical picture of trends in federal criminal practice and sentencing over the last half-decade or so, with particular emphasis on sentence severity and the degree of regional and inter-judge sentencing disparity. The statistics suggest that the expectation that the 2005 Booker decision would produce a substantial increase in the exercise of judicial sentencing discretion and a progressive abandonment of …

When Are Chiasms Admissible As Evidence?, W. Farrell Edwards, Boyd F. Edwards Dec 2010

When Are Chiasms Admissible As Evidence?, W. Farrell Edwards, Boyd F. Edwards

BYU Studies

*This article is being offered free as a courtesy to lds.org as it was footnoted in an expanded Gospel Topic on their site.

Since John Welch's discovery of chiasmus in the Book of Mormon in 1967, many critics have attempted to show how chiasmus appears in just about every type of literature, from Dr. Seuss to Strangite scripture. This article discusses the authors' statistical admissibility tests to verify whether a chiasmus in a work shows strong evidence of intentionality by the original author. Their results indicate that certain passages in the Old Testament and in the Book of Mormon show …

Effect Of Addition Cobalt Nanoparticles On Sn-Ag-Cu Lead-Free Solder, S.L. Tay, A.S. Md. Abdul Haseeb, Mohd Rafie Johan

Research Publications (2006 to 2010)

Nowadays, nanoelectroctronic, electro-nanotechnologies environmental friendly products become the roadmap in industry. Hence, nanoscale of reinforcement into lead-free solder becomes more popular rather than the micro size of reinforcement. In this paper, Cobalt nanoparticles-reinforced Sn-Ag-Cu composite solders were prepared by thoroughly blending 0.75 wt% of cobalt nanoparticles with near eutectic cement tended to suppress the growth of Cu3Sn intermetallic layer. However, upon addition of Co nanoparticles, the growth of Cu6Sn5 was enhanced. The distribution of the Co nanoparticles was observed by the elemental mapping which was carried out by using electron micro probe analysis (EPMA) and transmission electron microscopy which equipped …

Role And Authority: An Empirical Study On Internal Auditors In Malaysia, S. Umor, N. Mahzan, N. Zulkifli Dec 2010

Role And Authority: An Empirical Study On Internal Auditors In Malaysia, S. Umor, N. Mahzan, N. Zulkifli

Research Publications (2006 to 2010)

This paper addresses the relationship between the roles of the internal auditor (IA) and authority. The internal auditor's varying roles that include control oversight, decision support, risk management support, governance, system involvement, technical and intimidation, are determined by how the internal auditor himself perceives his work and the extent of which he enjoys role clarity. The results show that although the management intimidation role is dominant in explaining the variance in authority, this construct only explains l3.7 percent variance in authority. These results support the need for the Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA) to provide internal auditors with adequate interpretation …

In Vitro And In Vivo Anti-Inflammatory Activity Of 17-O-Acetylacuminolide Through The Inhibition Of Cytokines, Nf-Κb Translocation And Ikkβ Activity, Mouna Achoui, David Appleton, Mahmood Ameen Abdulla, Khalijah Awang, Mustafa Ali Mohd, Mohd Rais Mustafa

Research Publications (2006 to 2010)

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: 17-O-acetylacuminolide (AA), a diterpenoid labdane, was isolated for the first time from the plant species Neouvaria foetida. The anti-inflammatory effects of this compound were studied both in vitro and in vivo. EXPERIMENTAL APPROACH: Plant extracts were initially tested against LPS-stimulated release of tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) from murine macrophages (RAW264.7 cells). Based on bioassay-guided fractionation, the active compound was identified as AA. AA was tested for its ability to reduce nitric oxide (NO) production, and the inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) expression. The inhibition of a panel of inflammatory cytokines (TNF, IL-1β, IL-6, KC, and GM-CSF) …

Privacy Implications Of Smart Meters, Cheryl Dancey Balough Dec 2010

Privacy Implications Of Smart Meters, Cheryl Dancey Balough

Chicago-Kent Law Review

Many people worry about the erosion of privacy in our society given developments in technology, but that loss of privacy may take a quantum leap as electric "smart meters" make it possible for strangers to know on a real-time basis what is occurring in our houses and apartments. Perhaps the greatest concern is that current laws and regulations do not fully protect us from this unprecedented threat to two of our most basic rights—to be left alone in our own homes and to control personal information. Utility companies across the country are replacing conventional electric meters with smart meters designed …

Normative Reflectance And Transmittance Measurements On Healthy Newborn And 1-Month-Old Infants, Gabrielle R. Merchant, Nicholas J. Horton, Susan E. Voss Dec 2010

Normative Reflectance And Transmittance Measurements On Healthy Newborn And 1-Month-Old Infants, Gabrielle R. Merchant, Nicholas J. Horton, Susan E. Voss

Engineering: Faculty Publications

Objective:

Ear-canal-based wideband reflectance (WBR) measurements may provide objective measures to assess and monitor middle-ear status in young babies. This work presents WBR measurements of power reflectance and transmittance on populations of healthy newborn babies (3 to 5 days) and healthy 1-mo-old babies (28 to 34 days). Thus, this work determines how power reflectance and transmittance vary between newborn and 1-mo-old babies and characterizes the range of these measures in normal populations.

Design:

Power reflectance and transmittance were calculated from pressure measurements made in the ear canals of seven newborn (12 ears) and eleven 1-mo-old (19 ears) babies. Permutation tests, …

Constructing A Regulatory Regime For The Exploitation Of Resources On The Moon And Other Celestial Bodies: A Balancing Act, Jason Bonin, Fabio Tronchetti Dec 2010

Constructing A Regulatory Regime For The Exploitation Of Resources On The Moon And Other Celestial Bodies: A Balancing Act, Jason Bonin, Fabio Tronchetti

Indian Journal of International Economic Law

Law can be both a catalyst and consequence of technological change. Nowhere is this fact more clear than in the realm of space law. Man’s initial ascent to space was manifested not only through scientific discovery, but also through legal innovation, as both a means of keeping up with and shaping the use of outer space. During the initial period of space exploration, legal norms were developed in a world of state actors, designed to promote the continued peaceful use of space and to prevent claims of dominion or sovereignty. Since that time, further technological development and shifts in economic …

Economic Governance And Space Law: Emerging Foundations For Development Of “Common Pool Resources” In Outer Space, Valnora Leister

Indian Journal of International Economic Law

As commercial space faring capabilities spread, a need is growing for new approaches to safeguard the common interests of humanity in space. The 1967 Outer Space Treaty declares in its opening article that, “exploration and use of outer space, including the Moon and other celestial bodies, shall be carried out for the benefit and in the interests of all countries, irrespective of their degree of economic or scientific development, and shall be the province of Mankind”. However, to date, little has been done to develop outer space for the benefit of humanity. So far, space has been explored mainly by …

Beyala Et Le Plagiat : Gary, Buten Et Walker Pourvoyeurs De Textes, Kisito Hona

Présence Francophone: Revue internationale de langue et de littérature

If the name of Calixthe Beyala seems to be linked to controversial issues, it is also because she was repeatedly suspected and accused of plagiarism. One of these accusations led to her condemnation by the tribunal of Paris on May 7th, 1996. The purpose of this article consists not only in recapitulating the facts, but also, in capitalizing on them to study the phenomenon of plagiarism in general and the specifi c aspects which it takes with this writer.

Assessing The Nature Of Rip Currents Along The South Shore Of Long Island, Ny: Dominant Rip Type And Insights Into Possible Forcing Mechanisms, Michael Patrick Slattery

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

The south shore of Long Island experiences periodic rip currents that pose a human threat as well as generate scientific intrigue. To address the type of rip currents present along Long Island's south shore, an integrated monitoring system that includes use of beach cameras, the SWAN wave model, and seismic recording stations was implemented. The original site was in East Hampton, NY in a private residence while a second camera was established in the Fire Island lighthouse and a second seismic station was placed in the Maidstone club (also in East Hampton, NY). Statistics from camera observations indicate that rip …

Interactions between membrane proteins and the soluble fraction are essential for signal transduction and for regulating nutrient transport. To gain insights into the membrane-based interactome, 3,852 open reading frames (ORFs) out of a target list of 8,383 representing membrane and signaling proteins from Arabidopsis thaliana were cloned into a Gatewaycompatible vector. The mating-based split ubiquitin system was used to screen for potential protein-protein interactions (pPPIs) among 490 Arabidopsis ORFs. A binary robotic screen between 142 receptor-like kinases (RLKs), 72 transporters, 57 soluble protein kinases and phosphatases, 40 glycosyltransferases, 95 proteins of various functions, and 89 proteins with unknown function detected …

Message from the President: Those who watch the operations of the administration from the outside are easily tempted to regard the basis of administrative action as the will to power or a taste for conspiracy or a lust for publicity. To be sure, all these passions flow through the administrative nervous system. The inside experience of the academic approximation of power, however, reveals a far different prime directive: fear. Readers of Shakespeare’s tragedies and history plays know the story all too well: a person with formidable talents who may or may not be suited to rule a domain and who …
