Political Ideology And Ideological (Re)Alignment 1972-2006, Derrick Ryan Shapley Dec 2010

Political Ideology And Ideological (Re)Alignment 1972-2006, Derrick Ryan Shapley

Theses and Dissertations

This study tests the relationship of the 6 ideological variables and 7 contextual variables to shifts in ideological alignment through a latent class regression analysis for three periods of years (1972-1978, 1980-1992, 1993-2006). The latent class regression models determine the number of identifiable classes for each model. Using ideological realignment theory (Abramowitz and Saunders 1998) this study finds there has been a moderate polarization of opinions that has occurred, as well as, a moderate hardening of ideological beliefs with moral issues during the third time period becoming the driving force in ideological makeup. With regard to the culture wars hypothesis …

Cultural Predilection On Design In Planning Ecological Sanitation In Northern Uganda, Charles K. Mccall

Theses and Dissertations

Poor sanitation and open defecation is a major concern in many parts of the world. Ecological sanitation is a possible alternative to the global issue by using dry toilet systems that allow for recycling the waste for other uses. The purpose of this thesis is to determine the cultural perception and design implications toward ecological sanitation in developing countries. By surveying the local population in the proposed environments and implementing a corresponding system, the sanitation system has a much higher chance of sustainability and success. In Northern Uganda, the population was surveyed through a questionnaire and a Visual Preference Survey …

This test is typically performed at a DoD test lab and data taken at the lab is used to determine safe operating …

Design, Construction, And Testing Of A High Altitude Research Glider, Trevor Llewellyn Parker Dec 2010

Design, Construction, And Testing Of A High Altitude Research Glider, Trevor Llewellyn Parker

Theses and Dissertations

Micro aerial vehicle development and atmospheric flight on Mars are areas that require research in very low Reynolds number flight. Facilities for studying these problems are not widely available. The upper atmosphere of the Earth, approximately 100,000 feet AGL, is readily available and closely resembles the atmosphere on Mars, in both temperature and density. This low density also allows normal size test geometry with a very low Reynolds number. This solves a problem in micro aerial vehicle development; it can be very difficult to manufacture instrumented test apparatus in the small sizes required for conventional testing. This thesis documents the …

Influence Of Soil Properties On The Aboveground Blast Environment From A Near-Surface Detonation, John Q. Ehrgott Dec 2010

Influence Of Soil Properties On The Aboveground Blast Environment From A Near-Surface Detonation, John Q. Ehrgott

Theses and Dissertations

Detonation of an explosive charge, such as a mine or an improvised explosive device (IED) at the ground surface or buried at shallow depth in soil, can produce high airblast pressures and significant dynamic soil debris loads on an overlying or nearby structure, such as a vehicle passing over the explosive. The blast loading environment is a function of many factors including the explosive type, configuration, mass, and depth of burial, soil characteristics, and the distance between the ground surface and the structure or object. During the past several years, the US Army has focused considerable attention on developing improved …

Helping Prepare Community College Students To Make The Transition From College To Work, Lagena Arlette Bradley

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of the study was to investigate students’ perceptions about the need for more student training on making the transition from community college enrollment to employment. The hypothesis was that community college students would perceive that additional career counseling services would help them transition successfully into the world of work. Examination of students’ thoughts about career counseling services assisted in finding factors that facilitate and impede students’ desires for career counseling services including career courses. A researcher-developed pen and paper self-report survey instrument was administered to students enrolled in English courses at Meridian Community College during the 2009 fall …

Fiber Loop Ringdown Evanescent Field Sensors, Chamini Saumya Herath Dec 2010

Fiber Loop Ringdown Evanescent Field Sensors, Chamini Saumya Herath

Theses and Dissertations

We combine the evanescent field (EF) sensing mechanism with the fiber loop ringdown (FLRD) sensing scheme to create FLRD-EF sensors. The EF sensor heads are fabricated by etching the cladding of a single-mode fiber (SMF), while monitoring the etching process by the FLRD technique in real-time, on-line with high control precision. The effect of the sensor head dimensions on the sensors' detection sensitivity and response time are investigated. The EF scattering (EFS) sensing mechanism is combined with the FLRD detection scheme to create a new type of fiber optic index sensor. The detection limit for an optical index change is …

Tunable Optical Delay In Doppler-Broadened Cesium Vapor, Monte D. Anderson Dec 2010

Tunable Optical Delay In Doppler-Broadened Cesium Vapor, Monte D. Anderson

Theses and Dissertations

Variable-delay tunable optical delay line or optical buffers are critical for the development of all-optical networks components as well as interferometry and analytic instruments. Recent research on slow light may hold the key for the development of the first practical tunable optical delay device. In this research the linear dispersion delay effects in an alkali vapor. The hyperfine relaxation observations present insight into the complex bleach wave dynamics during a high-intensity pulsed pump in DPAL systems.

Demystifying Conventional Assumptions: Do African American Parents Anticipate Investing Less Toward Their Children’S College Costs Than Their White Peers?, Abebayehu Aemero Tekleselassie Dec 2010

Demystifying Conventional Assumptions: Do African American Parents Anticipate Investing Less Toward Their Children’S College Costs Than Their White Peers?, Abebayehu Aemero Tekleselassie

Journal of Student Financial Aid

Some researchers and theorists tend to portray African American parents as lacking the cultural know-how to provide a supportive home environment that enhances college access and success for their children. Since contribution toward college costs is one tangible means by which researchers gauge parents’ commitment toward their children’s education, this study draws data from the National Longitudinal Study (NELS: 1988/2000) and examines how the amount and source of funding parents anticipate toward college costs differs between African Americans and Whites. Results indicate that while racial differences in anticipated college funding appear to favor Whites, who aggregately expect to contribute more …

Early Life Dynamics In Tropical Western Atlantic And Caribbean Snappers (Lutjanidae) And Barracudas (Sphyraenidae), Evan K. D'Alessandro

Open Access Dissertations

Processes occurring during the early life of marine fishes encompassing the larval, settlement, and juvenile stages can have important impacts on recruitment and subsequent population dynamics. Yet these life stages remain poorly understood, especially in coral reef-associated species of commercial and recreational fisheries interest. Two years (2003-2004) of monthly sampling of 17 stations along a transect spanning the east-west axis of the Straits of Florida revealed consistent spatiotemporal patterns in larval abundance, growth, and mortality of several snapper and barracuda species. Much of the species-specific variability in these patterns tracked adult life history, and spatial (several snapper species) and temporal …

Automatic Media Segmentation Within Ieee 1599–2008, Antonello D'Aguanno, Luca A. Ludovico, Davide Andrea Mauro

Computer Sciences and Electrical Engineering Faculty Research

This paper deals with the automatic extraction of synchronization data from IEEE 1599-2008, an XML-based standard aiming at a comprehensive description of music. Within such format, audio tracks and video contents related to the same music piece can be referred to the occurrence of symbolic music events. In this way, digital objects are mutually synchronized, too. The goal is to show how timing information can be easily extracted from an IEEE 1599-2008 file, converted into a suitable format, and finally employed in a multimedia editing environment in order to produce an automatic segmentation of media objects.

Technology: How To Stay Out Of Court, Erin Jozwiak, Heather Thomas, Jackie Pillow, George Taylor Ii

Parameters of Law in Student Affairs and Higher Education (CNS 670)

It is hard to believe that over a century ago business professionals, educators, high school and college students were writing letters with a pen and ink, making telephone calls on a land line phone, and physically making home visits to family and friends. In today’s society, texting has replaced phone calls, picture and video messaging has replaced face to face conversation, emails has replaced letter writing and social networking is changing the face of how electronic communication is viewed along and administered.

Electronic communication has led the way in this new millennium of communication and because technology is changing so …
