This article provides a qualitative review of the published literature dealing with the design, implementation, and evaluation of simulation-based team training (SBTT) in healthcare with the purpose of providing synthesis of the present state of the science to guide practice and future research. A systematic literature review was conducted and produced 27 articles meeting the inclusion criteria. These articles were coded using a low-inference content analysis coding scheme designed to extract important information about the training program. Results are summarized in 10 themes describing important considerations for what occurs before, during, and after a training event. Both across disciplines and …

A Tale Of Prosecutorial Indiscretion: Ramsey Clark And The Selective Non-Prosecution Of Stokely Carmichael, Lonnie T. Brown Oct 2010

A Tale Of Prosecutorial Indiscretion: Ramsey Clark And The Selective Non-Prosecution Of Stokely Carmichael, Lonnie T. Brown

Scholarly Works

During the height of the Vietnam War and one of the most volatile periods of the civil rights movement, then-Attorney General Ramsey Clark controversially resisted intense political pressure to prosecute Black Power originator and antiwar activist Stokely Carmichael. Taken in isolation, this decision may seem courageous and praiseworthy, but when considered against the backdrop of Clark’s contemporaneous prosecution of an all-white group of similarly situated anti-draft leaders (the so-called Boston Five), his exercise of prosecutorial discretion becomes suspect. Specifically, the Boston Five were prosecuted in 1968 for conspiracy to aid and abet draft evasion, a charge for which the evidence …

Frédéric Ozanam's Tactical Wisdom For Today's Consumer Society, Thomas Mckenna C.M. Oct 2010

Frédéric Ozanam's Tactical Wisdom For Today's Consumer Society, Thomas Mckenna C.M.

Vincentian Studies

From Thomas McKenna’s perspective, consumerism reduces everything, including religious tradition and altruism, to commodities that are removed from their original contexts and lacking in meaning. Elements of consumerism are identified; their combined effect leads individuals to only value short-term engagements with what appeals to them, makes them feel noble, or makes a statement about their identity. McKenna examines how Frédéric Ozanam’s life and work can be used to counteract this. According to Ozanam, Christians should mediate between the rich and the poor to alleviate class conflict and ensure justice for poor persons. His mandate for direct service means that neither …

Accessing Truth: Marketplaces Of Ideas In The Information Age, Nima Darouian Oct 2010

Accessing Truth: Marketplaces Of Ideas In The Information Age, Nima Darouian

Cardozo Public Law, Policy & Ethics Journal

The article argues that the Internet comprises numerous distinct virtual marketplaces, each with unique regulatory frameworks and dynamics, which are essential for the dissemination of information and public welfare. Current legal doctrines, such as those in the Uniform Commercial Code (UCC), the Uniform Computer Information Transactions Act (UCITA), and the Principles of the Law of Software Contracts (PLSC), are insufficient to protect the public interest in these virtual marketplaces. The article proposes that courts adopt the Reichman-Franklin standard, which requires mass-market contracts and non-negotiable access agreements to be fair, reasonable, and aligned with the public interest in education, science, research, …

The Impact Of Gender On Voluntary And Involuntary Executive Departure, John R. Becker-Blease, Susan Elkinawy, Mark Stater Oct 2010

The Impact Of Gender On Voluntary And Involuntary Executive Departure, John R. Becker-Blease, Susan Elkinawy, Mark Stater

Finance Faculty Works

We examine the frequency and conditions of executive departure from S&P 1500 firms. Based upon published news reports, we find that female executives are more likely than male executives to depart their positions voluntarily and involuntarily in the presence of controls for firm performance, firm governance, and human capital. We also find that women are less likely than men to depart voluntarily as firm size increases or board size decreases but more likely to be dismissed as the board becomes more male dominated.

Space Age Love Song: The Mix Tape In A Digital Universe, Megan M. Carpenter Oct 2010

Space Age Love Song: The Mix Tape In A Digital Universe, Megan M. Carpenter

Nevada Law Journal

Mix tapes are the classic, iconic form of music sharing. Mix tape creators of the past believed they were making a piece of art larger than the sum of its parts. And even in the face of technological development so rapid and far-reaching as to remove the literal “tape” from “mix tape,” there are nonetheless modern incarnations that crop up on a regular basis, from mix CDs to mix-sharing websites. The technology is different, but the song remains the same.

The Impact Of Treatment Intensity On A Parent And Child Therapy Program, Jennifer Carrasco Oct 2010

The Impact Of Treatment Intensity On A Parent And Child Therapy Program, Jennifer Carrasco

Dissertations (1934 -)

Behavior problems are prevalent in toddlers and preschoolers and can cause significant distress for caregivers and adversely affect young children's development. Research has shown that participation in Parent-Child Therapy (PCT) programs significantly reduces childhood behavior problems while increasing positive parent and child behaviors. Yet past research has not attended to the role of treatment intensity on program effectiveness, and the question of whether greater doses of treatment are associated with stronger outcomes in PCT programs has yet to be explored. The present study investigated the impact of treatment intensity on outcomes in a treatment program for low-income children age five …

Impact Of Parenting Factors And Personal Ego Development On Risk For Eating Disorders Among College Women, Valerie J. Lucas Oct 2010

Impact Of Parenting Factors And Personal Ego Development On Risk For Eating Disorders Among College Women, Valerie J. Lucas

Dissertations (1934 -)

The purpose of this study was to examine the role of parental factors and individual ego development in identifying an at-risk profile for eating disordered behavior among female emerging adults. Specifically, this study was designed to test the hypotheses that parent eating attitudes and behavior and parenting style are correlated phenomena associated with a self-reported proclivity for eating disordered behavior among female offspring with individual ego development level as either a protective or exacerbating factor. Previous research with parental factors and eating disorders does not address a comprehensive model that utilizes the multiple parental variables of parent eating attitudes and …

Reversible Deficiencies In Flagellar Beating And Axonemal Assembly, Mei Wei Oct 2010

Reversible Deficiencies In Flagellar Beating And Axonemal Assembly, Mei Wei

Dissertations (1934 -)

Axonemal complexes in flagella are largely prepackaged in the cell body. As such, one mutation often results in the absence of the co-assembled components and permanent motility deficiencies. For example, a Chlamydomonas mutant defective in RSP4 in the radial spoke, which is critical for bend propagation, has paralyzed flagella that also lack the paralogue RSP6 and three additional radial spoke proteins. Intriguingly, recent studies showed that several mutant strains contain a mixed population of swimmers and paralyzed cells despite their identical genetic background. Here we report a cause underlying these variations. Two new mutants lacking RSP6 swim processively and other …

User-Generated Video Sites Effects On Aggression And Interpersonal Relations Of Old Dominion Undergraduate Students, Christopher R. Hodge Oct 2010

User-Generated Video Sites Effects On Aggression And Interpersonal Relations Of Old Dominion Undergraduate Students, Christopher R. Hodge

Sociology & Criminal Justice Theses & Dissertations

The use of the internet and the activities available over the internet has continuously grown since their creation. A huge proportion of our society utilizes the internet and its available activities. Specifically, as a 2009 Pew Data memo shows over half of users age 18 and over utilize the internet for personal use. The use of user generated video sites (UGVS) is no different, as the largest user-generated video community YouTube boasted in 2009 that every minute YouTube receives ten hours of uploaded video. Given the popularity of user-generated video sites, some have raised concerns about potential negative effects that …

Phosphorus Uptake In Rhodomonas Salina (Wislouch) And Its Effect On Allocation And Elimination In Acartia Tonsa (Dana), Danna Palladino Oct 2010

Phosphorus Uptake In Rhodomonas Salina (Wislouch) And Its Effect On Allocation And Elimination In Acartia Tonsa (Dana), Danna Palladino

OES Theses and Dissertations

Phosphorus is a key element in important biochemical compounds, such as RNA and phospholipids, and can become limiting in a variety of marine systems. The uptake of phosphorus into biochemical fractions (protein, low molecular weight (LMW) compounds, lipid, polysaccharide and nucleic acid) in Acartia tonsa fed 33P -labeled Rhodomonas salina was examined. R. salina was cultured on two variations of one media that in one case contained phosphorus in balance and the other out of balance with relation to other standard f/2 components. The P-balanced (PB) media had a N:P ratio of 24.5, which is higher than that found …

Mergers And Acquisitions In Resource Industry: Implications For Africa, Francis N. Botchway

Connecticut Journal of International Law

After contentious bids to acquire one another in mid 2009, BHP Biliton and Rio Tinto, both Australia based mining giants, settled for a joint venture arrangement.2 This came about after an initial effort by Chinese state-owned, Chinalco, to partner, Rio Tinto failed. 3 In June 2009, Xstrata, a Swiss mining company, made an estimated E41 billion merger overture to its rival, London and South Africa - based, Anglo American.4 This was the second major merger effort from Xstrata in as many months after its bid to acquire rival, Lonmin, failed because it could not raise the necessary finance in the …

The Truth About Haiti, Irwin P. Stotzky Oct 2010

The Truth About Haiti, Irwin P. Stotzky

Connecticut Journal of International Law

The transition from dictatorship to democracy is a long and arduous process in the evolution of any society. Indeed, such transitions, although crucially important for the well-being of millions of people, are problematic at best. While the 1980s, 1990s, and the opening decade of the twenty-first century have witnessed the slow movement from authoritarian regimes to fledgling constitutional democracies in many nations, this process is far from complete. It remains much debated in concept and fragile in practice.

The dramatic expansion of interest in the ideas of constitutionalism, the rule of law, democracy, and human rights in diverse parts of …

Toward A Cosmopolitan Ethic In Debt Restructuring, Carmen Amalia Corrales Oct 2010

Toward A Cosmopolitan Ethic In Debt Restructuring, Carmen Amalia Corrales

Law and Contemporary Problems

Corrales discusses the sovereign debt restructuring process. Process -- or the series of actions, actors, and influences involved in a transaction -- is rarely examined in law. But the dynamics of process and the unspoken codes that affect it are, nonetheless, key to complex transactions and sovereign debt restructuring.

Operation Eufor Tchad/Rca And The Eu's Common Security And Defense Policy, Bjoern H. Seibert Mr.

Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies

Addressing security challenges posed by weak and failed states will require increasingly demanding military interventions, often over a great distance and prolonged periods of time. As a result of several engagements over the last decade, the U.S. military has gained valuable experience in undertaking stability operations. However, the United States should not be expected to fulfill such operations alone; we must look to our partners and allies to share some of the global responsibility. In this, Europe is unquestionably the most capable and natural U.S. ally. While most U.S. policymakers are familiar with the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, developments in …

Harnessing Post-Conflict "Transitions": A Conceptual Primer, Nicholas J. Armstrong Mr., Jacqueline Chura-Beaver Ms. Oct 2010

Harnessing Post-Conflict "Transitions": A Conceptual Primer, Nicholas J. Armstrong Mr., Jacqueline Chura-Beaver Ms.

Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies

Current research and available tools for transition in post-conflict situations are analyzed. The authors make a significant contribution to the field by providing a broadly applicable definition of transition and a comprehensive assessment of the existing approaches and literature on the topic. Most importantly, their analysis lays the groundwork for future conceptual development and improved implementation of post-conflict transitions. To evaluate transition strategies and make recommendations for future stability operations, researchers and policymakers require both a common understanding and a way ahead for advancing the concept as a critical doctrinal and operational objective.

Introduction To Special Issue: Public Argument/Digital Media, Damien S. Pfister Oct 2010

Introduction To Special Issue: Public Argument/Digital Media, Damien S. Pfister

Department of Communication Studies: Faculty Publications

This introductory essay to the special issue of Argumentation and Advocacy on Public Argument/Digital Media makes the case for a sustained interrogation of digitally-networked argumentation practices. To complement current scholarship on how new forms of digital mediation produce group polarization and truthiness, I suggest that argumentation scholars look at digital media as a rich source for the production and criticism of argument. Each of the essays in the special issue is then introduced by examining five cross-cutting themes that argumentation scholars may consider when examining how digital media produce networked argument practices: interactivity, instantaneity, scale, archiving, and search.
