Halo Ion Trap Mass Spectrometry: Design, Instrumentation, And Performance, Miao Wang Nov 2010

Halo Ion Trap Mass Spectrometry: Design, Instrumentation, And Performance, Miao Wang

Theses and Dissertations

New ion trap mass spectrometry (ITMS) instrumentation, the toroidal IT and halo IT, were developed to meet the significant growth in on-site analysis applications. The miniature toroidal IT mass analyzer was operated with radio frequency (RF) trapping voltages of 3 kVp-p or less. Despite its reduced dimensions, it has roughly the same ion trapping capacity as conventional 3D quadrupole ITs. Unit-mass resolved spectra for n-butylbenzene, xenon, and naphthalene were obtained. The desired linear mass scale was obtained using conventional mass-selective instability scan combined with resonance ejection. The halo IT was also based on toroidal trapping geometry and microfabrication technology, consisting …

Headteacher Visibility, Teacher Characteristics, And Headteacher Trustworthiness: Perceptions Of Secondary School Teachers In Mukono District, Uganda, David Mckay Boren Nov 2010

Headteacher Visibility, Teacher Characteristics, And Headteacher Trustworthiness: Perceptions Of Secondary School Teachers In Mukono District, Uganda, David Mckay Boren

Theses and Dissertations

Research indicates that students perform better academically in schools with higher levels of trust than in schools with lower levels of trust. School leaders are primarily responsible for building cultures of trust but are often at a loss as to how to do so effectively. With the assumption that as perceptions of school leader trustworthiness improve, teachers will be more likely to place their trust in that school leader, this research seeks to clarify how Ugandan headteachers improve teachers' perceptions of headteacher trustworthiness. In particular, we examined how specific types of headteacher visibility related to teachers' perceptions of headteacher relational …

Dendroaspis Natriuretic Peptide For Treatment Of Cancer, David L. Vesely Nov 2010

Dendroaspis Natriuretic Peptide For Treatment Of Cancer, David L. Vesely

USF Patents

Disclosed is a method of inhibiting the growth of a cancer cell using Dendroaspis natriuretic peptide (DNP), isolated from the Green Mamba snake venom with similar structure to ANP, with or without four cardiac natriuretic peptides i.e., atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP), vessel dilator, long acting natriuretic peptide (LANP), and kaliuretic peptide. Dose-response curves revealed a significant (p<0.0001) decrease in human glioblastoma cells with each ten-fold increase in concentration from 1 μM to 100 μM of four of the cardiac peptide hormones. There was an 75%, 68%, 67%, and 65% elimination within 24 hours of glioblastoma cells secondary to vessel dilator, kaliuretic peptide, ANP, and LANP, respectively (p<0.0001) while DNP had no significant effect at 1 μM (2% decrease), and 10 μM (7%), but 100 μM caused a (17%) decrease (p<0.05). Three days after treatment with these peptide hormones, the cancer cells began to proliferate again. These same hormones decreased DNA synthesis from 65% to 87% (p<0.00001).

Evaluation Of Immunogene Therapy Using A Plasmid Encoding Il-15 Delivered By Electroporation In A 3d Tumor Model And A Mouse Melanoma Model, Bernadette Marrero Nov 2010

Evaluation Of Immunogene Therapy Using A Plasmid Encoding Il-15 Delivered By Electroporation In A 3d Tumor Model And A Mouse Melanoma Model, Bernadette Marrero

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Melanoma is an aggressive disease with few effective treatment options. Non-toxic, anti-tumor therapies and prophylactic approaches are currently being investigated to identify treatment options that will control and remove late-stage melanoma.

The overall goal of this project was to establish an effective delivery method for a plasmid encoding human interleukin (phIL-15) into mouse melanoma cells (B16.F10) using the gene transfer technique electroporation (EP)1. The EP delivery phIL-15 was optimized using an in vitro 3D tumor model. The purpose was to translate these IL-15 delivery conditions into an in vivo mouse melanoma model to study IL-15 signal transduction and …

Adolf Hitler – America’S First Black President And Other Oval Office Demons: The Right-Wing Rhetorical Assault On Barack Obama’S Health Care Plan, Daniel Ruth Nov 2010

Adolf Hitler – America’S First Black President And Other Oval Office Demons: The Right-Wing Rhetorical Assault On Barack Obama’S Health Care Plan, Daniel Ruth

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This thesis endeavors to examine the imagery and rhetoric surrounding the portrayal of President Barack Obama during the national debate over health care reform from the summer of 2009 into the spring of 2010. It is argued that the critics of the health care reform legislation used images to portray the president as Adolf Hitler, Che Guevara, The Joker, as well as other images such as the swastika and the Wehrmacht symbol as stand-in euphemisms for race to discredit Barack Obama.

A number of exemplar images have been selected from various websites and publications specifically addressing the portrayal of Barack …

Do General, Community Hospitals Compete By Specializing In High Volume, High Revenue-Generating Service Lines?, Nancy J. Muller Nov 2010

Do General, Community Hospitals Compete By Specializing In High Volume, High Revenue-Generating Service Lines?, Nancy J. Muller

Theses and Dissertations

To determine if general, community hospitals show evidence of specializing in the nation's six highest volume, highest revenue-generating service lines, 2003-2007 data of hospitals throughout Florida, Virginia, and Nevada were analyzed using backward deletion, stepwise regression. Service lines selected for study were cardiac surgery, cardiology, invasive cardiology, orthopedics, labor and delivery, and pulmonary services. Results do show evidence of specialization, but characteristics of hospitals vary by service line. Findings suggest that the general, community hospital, traditionally a full-service provider, may be undergoing transformation including specialization. The study demonstrates the usefulness of studying specialization at the service line level.

An Analysis Of U.S. Policies Targeting The Iranian Nuclear Program, Bryan T. Hamilton Nov 2010

An Analysis Of U.S. Policies Targeting The Iranian Nuclear Program, Bryan T. Hamilton

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Iran’s nuclear program continues to present a major challenge to U.S. policy. At the core of this challenge is one fundamental question: Is Iran attempting to build a nuclear weapon? Objective analysis reveals that Iran’s dependence on oil and natural gas provides sufficient economic merit for Iran to pursue a peaceful nuclear program; without nuclear power to meet rising domestic energy needs, Iran’s economy will suffer. Though the economic justification is valid, the security of Iran and the survival of its regime are overarching; acts of foreign interference in Iran’s affairs have fueled the regime’s quest for a nuclear weapon. …

The Role Of Auditors In Fraud Detection, Prevention And Reporting In Nigeria, Ayobami Oluwagbemiga Oyinlola Nov 2010

The Role Of Auditors In Fraud Detection, Prevention And Reporting In Nigeria, Ayobami Oluwagbemiga Oyinlola

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Abstract This study investigates the role of auditors in the detection, prevention and reporting of fraud. Data were obtained from 184 respondents in Nigeria. The findings revealed that the respondents are very concerned about the problem of fraud. In addition, the respondents placed very high expectation on auditors’ duties on fraud prevention and detection. This perception is in contrast with the stated primary objective of an audit, as stipulated in ISA 200, which merely required auditors to form an opinion on the financial statements, but not of fraud detection. Keywords: Auditors, fraud, detection, prevention

How Emerging Market Firms Compete In Global Markets, Rajaram Veliyath, Lance Brouthers Nov 2010

How Emerging Market Firms Compete In Global Markets, Rajaram Veliyath, Lance Brouthers

Journal of Emerging Knowledge on Emerging Markets

We posit that contexts in emerging markets are different from developed country contexts. These contextual differences necessitate the development and deployment of unique capabilities and strategies on the parts of companies operating there. While all emerging market countries are not uniform across all of the characteristics described below, there is a great deal of commonality on these conditions within the group of emerging market countries, by virtue of their similar stages of development. Thus, companies that develop their skill sets and products/services in one emerging market are likely to more easily be able to extend them to others. Conversely, there …

Act 1: The Ocean Smell (1624-1938), James Smith Allen

A Privileged Past

The first act of "A Privileged Past" recounts the history of four families – the Allens of Manchester, Massachusetts; the Roomes of New York, New York; the Kruegers of Newark, New Jersey; and the Smiths also of Newark – since their arrival from Europe (the first two in the seventeenth century, the latter two in the nineteenth). These people brought with them distinct ethnic identities, which helped define the communities they joined, and in some cases led, as immigrants to the new world. Their experiences across and by the Atlantic Ocean are captured by this chapter’s prevailing figure of speech, …
