A Study Of Recent Classification Algorithms And A Novel Approach For Biosignal Data Classification, Eyup Cinar Jan 2010

A Study Of Recent Classification Algorithms And A Novel Approach For Biosignal Data Classification, Eyup Cinar

Theses

Analyzing and understanding human biosignals have been important research areas that have many practical applications in everyday life. For example, Brain Computer Interface is a research area that studies the connection between the human brain and external systems by processing and learning the brain signals called Electroencephalography (EEG) signals. Similarly, various assistive robotics applications are being developed to interpret eye or muscle signals in humans in order to provide control inputs for external devices. The efficiency for all of these applications depends heavily on being able to process and classify human biosignals. Therefore many techniques from Signal Processing and Machine …

Development Of A Platform For Simulating And Optimizing Thermoelectric Energy Systems, John Kreuder Jan 2010

Development Of A Platform For Simulating And Optimizing Thermoelectric Energy Systems, John Kreuder

Theses

Thermoelectrics are solid state devices that can convert thermal energy directly into electrical energy. They have historically been used only in niche applications because of their relatively low efficiencies. With the advent of nanotechnology and improved manufacturing processes thermoelectric materials have become less costly and more efficient As next generation thermoelectric materials become available there is a need for industries to quickly and cost effectively seek out feasible applications for thermoelectric heat recovery platforms. Determining the technical and economic feasibility of such systems requires a model that predicts performance at the system level. Current models focus on specific system applications …

Field‐Derived Henry's Law Constants For Polychlorinated Biphenyls In Oceanic Waters, Rosalinda Gioia, Kevin C. Jones, Rainer Lohmann, Luca Nizzetto, Jordi Dachs

Graduate School of Oceanography Faculty Publications

Accurate knowledge of Henry's law constants (Kaw) is very important for fate and transport studies of organic chemicals. Here field‐derived Kaw values for polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) congeners (PCBs 28, 49, 52, 118, 138, 149, and 153) were determined in the open Atlantic Ocean, at locations where air and seawater were assumed to be at equilibrium. Field‐based Kaw values were derived from air and seawater samples simultaneously collected at these locations, and their relationship with temperature was determined. The average field‐derived Kaw for PCBs 28, 49, 52, 118, and 138 was generally 2–3 times higher …

Unsplit Complex Frequency-Shifted Pml Implementation Using Auxiliary Differential Equations For Seismic Wave Modeling, Wei Zhang, Yang Shen Jan 2010

Unsplit Complex Frequency-Shifted Pml Implementation Using Auxiliary Differential Equations For Seismic Wave Modeling, Wei Zhang, Yang Shen

Graduate School of Oceanography Faculty Publications

The complex-frequency-shifted perfectly matched layer (CFS-PML) technique can efficiently absorb near-grazing incident waves. In seismic wave modeling, CFS-PML has been implemented by the first-order-accuracy convolutional PML technique or second-order-accuracy recursive convolution PML technique. Both use different algorithms than the numerical scheme for the interior domain to update auxiliary memory variables in the PML and thus cannot be used directly with higher-order time-marching schemes. We work with an unsplit-field CFS-PML implementation using auxiliary differential equations (ADEs) to update the auxiliary memory variables. This ADE CFS-PML results in complete first-order differential equations. Thus, the numerical scheme for the interior domain can be …

Parallel Programming Recipes, Thuy C. Nguyenphuc Jan 2010

Parallel Programming Recipes, Thuy C. Nguyenphuc

Master's Projects

Parallel programming has become vital for the success of commercial applications since Moore’s Law will now be used to double the processors (or cores) per chip every technology generation. The performance of applications depends on how software executions can be mapped on the multi-core chip, and how efficiently they run the cores. Currently, the increase of parallelism in software development is necessary, not only for taking advantage of multi-core capability, but also for adapting and surviving in the new silicon implementation. This project will provide the performance characteristics of parallelism for some common algorithms or computations using different parallel languages. …

Microbial Community Characterization And Pathogen Analysis Within Constructed Wetlands Of Varying Scale Designed For Contaminant Removal, Michael R. Mitzel

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Constructed wetlands (CWs) are complex treatment environments, requiring an integrative research approach to improve our understanding of them. The goal of this thesis was to establish an understanding of the functional and structural characteristics of microbial communities within bench-, field- and industrial-scale environmental treatment systems. The impact of pathogenic and/or antibiotic contaminants on these communities based on their functional and structural profiles using community-level physiological profiling (CLPP) and denaturing-gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE), respectively, was investigated. Under normal operation, bench-, field- and industrial-scale treatment systems were able to produce similarly behaving structural and functional profiles. Increased retention time was consistently associated …

An Exploration Of American And Canadian Tourist Destination Images Of Cuba, Culum Richard Canally Jan 2010

An Exploration Of American And Canadian Tourist Destination Images Of Cuba, Culum Richard Canally

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Tourism in Cuba is thriving. Since 1991 the island has quickly become one of the top Caribbean tourist destinations. As a result tourism researchers have recently turned their attention towards investigating many facets of tourism on the island. However one omission in this growing corpus of research is the effect that politics has had on Cuba’s tourist destination image (TDI). In this study I explore how politics influences the evolution of tourist destination image. I also demonstrate that a critical constructivist paradigm can be used as an alternative to traditional positivist/postpositivist ways of researching tourist destination image. Finally I utilize …

Beauty And Belonging: How Appearance Self-Appraisals Affect Perceived Relational Value, Relationship Standards And Desire For Interpersonal Contact, Vanessa M. Buote Jan 2010

Beauty And Belonging: How Appearance Self-Appraisals Affect Perceived Relational Value, Relationship Standards And Desire For Interpersonal Contact, Vanessa M. Buote

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

All individuals seek to develop and maintain social relationships (Baumeister & Leary, 1995). The extent to which people feel loved and accepted within their relationships is called perceived relational value (Leary, 2001). I argue that because sociocultural norms equate physical appearance and social acceptance for women (Thompson, 1999), women’s perceived relational value is inordinately linked to their self-appraisals of physical appearance. I also suggest that significant relational consequences can result from this association. In Study 1,1 demonstrated that self-appraisals of physical attractiveness and Body Mass Index predicted perceived relational value among women but not men. In Study 2,1 found that …

Individual Responsibility For Collective Harms, Melany Lorraine Banks Jan 2010

Individual Responsibility For Collective Harms, Melany Lorraine Banks

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

The aim of the dissertation is to propose a new theory of collective responsibility that will be able to determine individual responsibility for collective harms from small collectives to large, unstructured collectives. Theories of collective responsibility seek to address the harms that are caused when agents work collectively, and then to determine where responsibility will he in such cases. In the dissertation I show that these theories cannot address large, unstructured harms while being reducible to the individual. The key case for this dissertation is climate change, and I propose a theory of collective responsibility that will both identify this …

In-school teams work at maintaining an anti-bullying message within their school over the course of the year, while Regional team members develop a presentation which acts as a booster to the In-school …

Training Children Where They Learned Information: A Test Of Two Techniques, Justine Renner Jan 2010

Training Children Where They Learned Information: A Test Of Two Techniques, Justine Renner

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Source-monitoring abilities are crucial skills for children’s social and cognitive development, thus, source-monitoring training (SMT) has the potential to benefit children in many practical settings. While some previous research reported that older (7- to 8-years-old) but not younger children (3- to 4-year-olds) benefitted from SMT (Poole & Lindsay, 2002), other studies have found training effects with younger children (Thierry & Spence, 2002; 2004). The current study examined younger and older children's source monitoring trainability by comparing the two different training used in these previous studies: training to a criterion versus a set amount of training. 158 children (aged 3-4 and …

Microporous Organic Polymers: Synthesis And Post Synthetic Modifications, Phillip Andrew Kerneghan Jan 2010

Microporous Organic Polymers: Synthesis And Post Synthetic Modifications, Phillip Andrew Kerneghan

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Microporous solids are an important class of materials that have been studied extensively. Newer to this field are Microporous Organic Polymers (MOPs) which are networks constructed from smaller organic building blocks and exhibit large surface areas, small pore sizes and low densities. It is due to these characteristics that MOPs have attracted attention because of their potential use in applications such as catalysis, chemical separations and gas storage.

In this thesis is described the synthesis of two novel MOPs, the first of which being a network based on benzenediboronic acid and triptycene building blocks linked together by boronate esters. This …

This study is one of the first that examines the impact of the current economic crisis on business and non-business sector’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) efforts. We focus on one key CSR initiative, namely, the United Nations Global Compact (GC). Using survey data from a sample of GC participants in the US, we find that those reporting high CSR integration (i.e. into their policies, programs, performance, and goals), and those reporting lesser conformity to the active GC principles will be affected more by the crisis. Content analysis of CEO statements revealed critical obstacles in managing the risks and opportunities during …

Applying The “Contextual Integrity” Model Of Privacy To Personal Blogs In The Blogoshere, Frances Grodzinsky, Herman T. Tavani Jan 2010

Applying The “Contextual Integrity” Model Of Privacy To Personal Blogs In The Blogoshere, Frances Grodzinsky, Herman T. Tavani

School of Computer Science & Engineering Faculty Publications

In this paper, we analyze some controversial aspects of blogging and the blogosphere from the perspective of privacy. In particular, we focus on Helen Nissenbaum’s theory of privacy as “contextual integrity” and apply it to personal blogs, in general, and the case of the “Washingtonienne” blogger, in particular. We examine the question of whether personal blogs that are not password protected can be considered “normatively private contexts” according to Nissenbaum’s principles of privacy. We argue that they cannot. Using Nissenbaum’s original model, we conclude that privacy expectations for those who disclose personal information in such blogs are unrealistic. We also …

Social Networking And The Perception Of Privacy Within The Millennial Generation, Andra Gumbus, Frances S. Grodzinsky, Stephen J. Lilley

WCBT Faculty Publications

Has technology caused a generational divide between current college age users (Millennial Generation) who have no problems posting intimate details of their personal life on the Web and more traditional older users who seem to value privacy? This paper presents the results of a survey of 251 university students and follow-up focus groups on the topic of the perceptions of social networking and privacy. We will use Facebook as an example of social networking, and review attitudes about privacy and control over personal information among traditional and non-traditional college age users and light and heavy users of social networking sites.

Telling The Brand Story: Including News Articles In Online Promotional Strategies, Anca C. Micu Jan 2010

Telling The Brand Story: Including News Articles In Online Promotional Strategies, Anca C. Micu

WCBT Faculty Publications

Given the growing popularity of the Internet as a promotional medium, it is crucial for brand managers to examine the effects of combining the different brand communication sources online. According to social comprehension theory and knowledge from neuroscience, people exposed to a message spontaneously construct a mental simulation. People who are exposed to images or visuals are unlikely to assign verbal labels to their observations, whereas people who read a story may spontaneously form mental pictures of the narrative content. Mental processing of stories requires more extensive elaboration than processing of visuals. In a first study, survey results indicate online …

Lost Children: The Abuse And Neglect Of Minors In Polygamous Communities Of North America, Kelly R. Schwab Jan 2010

Lost Children: The Abuse And Neglect Of Minors In Polygamous Communities Of North America, Kelly R. Schwab

Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice

The note examines the challenges of addressing child abuse in polygamous communities, highlighting the tension between religious freedom and child protection. It argues that while religious beliefs are protected under the First Amendment, religious conduct, such as polygamy, should not be exempt from legal scrutiny when it harms children. The author advocates for courts to prioritize children's best interests over religious practices, especially in cases involving criminal activities like polygamy.

A Fourth Circuit Photograph, Carl W. Tobias Jan 2010

A Fourth Circuit Photograph, Carl W. Tobias

Law Faculty Publications

The Commission on Structural Alternatives for the Federal Courts of Appeals issued a report and proposals after carefully evaluating the appellate system for a year, while the data have minimally changed since the report's issuance. The Commission's principal focus was the Ninth Circuit, as Congress had instructed, yet the Commission assembled much useful information on each circuit court of appeals and found that all operate efficaciously. Because how the Fourth Circuit addresses a large docket is critical to appellate justice, the Commission's analysis of the tribunal and the court itself merit scrutiny, which this Article undertakes.

Part I of this …
