Antimicrobial And Anticancer Activity Of Essential Oils From Guatemalan Medicinal Plants, Andrew B. Miller Nov 2010

Antimicrobial And Anticancer Activity Of Essential Oils From Guatemalan Medicinal Plants, Andrew B. Miller

Theses and Dissertations

Guatemalan medicinal plants were collected and screened for the presence of essential oils using steam distillation. Oil was found in 63 species from 24 families and was tested in tube dilution assays for activity against Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus mutans, Lactobacillus acidophilus and Candida albicans. Several essential oils were highly active with 20 instances of oils inhibiting the microbes at an MIC of 0.31 µl/ml. Oils were also tested against cancerous and established cell lines using a 15% (v/v) agar-media which was developed to improve essential oil solubility. Assays were performed against three cancer lines: …

Straightness Of Growth For Carbon Nanotube Microelectromechanical Systems, Kellen S. Moulton Nov 2010

Straightness Of Growth For Carbon Nanotube Microelectromechanical Systems, Kellen S. Moulton

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this research is to examine the effect of iron catalyst thickness on the straightness of growth of carbon nanotube microelectromechanical systems (CNT-MEMS). One of the key benefits of CNT-MEMS is that they can potentially have very high aspect ratios. One of the challenges in attaining these high aspect ratios is maintaining device straightness; as these devices get taller, the edges tend to curve rather than grow straight vertically. Scanning electron mi- croscope images of samples grown using various iron catalyst thicknesses show that both straight growth and relatively good edge definition can be achieved using iron thicknesses …

Cryomicroscopic Investigations Of Freezing Processes In Cell Suspensions, Tathagata Acharya, Ram V. Devireddy Nov 2010

Cryomicroscopic Investigations Of Freezing Processes In Cell Suspensions, Tathagata Acharya, Ram V. Devireddy

Faculty Publications

This study evaluates the freezing response of three different cell types, Pacific oyster embryos (∼50 m in diameter), Jurkat cells and HeLa cells (∼12 to 15 m's in diameter), using cryomicroscopy. Freezing experiments were performed on oyster embryos at cooling rates of either 5 or 10 °C/min, while Jurkats were cooled at either 1 or 10 °C/min and HeLa cells were cooled at either 1, 15 or 20 °C/min, respectively. The experiments with oyster embryos were primarily designed to investigate the phenomena of intracellular ice formation (IIF) while the experiments for Jurkat and HeLa cells were designed to investigate both …

The Voice: 2001-2011

This edition of the Wooster Voice from November 19 of 2010 is eight pages long. The front page of this edition of the newspaper features an article about rising activism on college campuses following increased hate activity from Westboro Baptist Church. At Wooster, students came together to show their activism against these hate groups and support for victims of the hate. Alumni Helen Murray Free '45 has received two prestigious awards in chemistry. The next page includes information about a kidnapping in Mt. Vernon, Ohio. Six ways to improve the IS carrells are given by Hannah Diorio-Toth on page three …

Fortifying Leisure: A Qualitative Investigation Of Family Leisure In Uganda, Rachel Adams Mcgovern Nov 2010

Fortifying Leisure: A Qualitative Investigation Of Family Leisure In Uganda, Rachel Adams Mcgovern

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine leisure patterns and meanings of leisure among families in the developing East African nation of Uganda, in response to recent calls for more non-Western leisure studies (Chick, 1998; Iwasaki, Nishino, Onda & Bowling, 2007). The three focus questions answered in this study were: (a) what do Ugandans from the Mukono District think leisure is? (b) how is family leisure, in their terms, happening? and (c) in what ways do they think family leisure is important? This study utilized a grounded theory methodology (Glaser & Strauss, 1978) with qualitative data analysis methods. Sixty-eight …

Accessioning And Managing The Petersburg Area Art League Collection, Janelle Wilson Nov 2010

Accessioning And Managing The Petersburg Area Art League Collection, Janelle Wilson

Theses and Dissertations

Since the 1960s, the Petersburg Area Art League (PAAL) has obtained works of art for its permanent collection through purchases, private donations, and through the local art show, the Poplar Lawn Art Festival, later known as Artfest. Recently, however, the organization has decided to become a non-collecting institution in order to focus on its mission to promote the arts in Petersburg through gallery shows for local artists and educational programs. While PAAL’s staff members share a love of art and a dedication to the local community, they have not been trained in professional standards for handling museum collections as outlined …

Improved Measurement And Separation Techniques For Interior Near-Field Acoustical Holography, Zachary A. Collins Nov 2010

Improved Measurement And Separation Techniques For Interior Near-Field Acoustical Holography, Zachary A. Collins

Theses and Dissertations

Recent advances in near-field acoustical holography (NAH) have expanded the theory to interior spaces where multiple sources and/or reflections are present. In 1990, Tamura presented the spatial Fourier transform separation method to measure the reflection coefficient at oblique angles using two measurement planes in the wave number domain. This paper adapts the spatial Fourier transform separation method for application in interior NAH. A practical exploration of important experimental parameters is performed, which include the relative amplitudes of primary and disturbing sources, the measurement plane separation distance, and an acceptable noise floor. This technique is successfully applied in a reverberant environment …

X-Rays From Planetary Nebulae: Unveiling Wind Collisions And Binarity, Rodolfo Montez Nov 2010

X-Rays From Planetary Nebulae: Unveiling Wind Collisions And Binarity, Rodolfo Montez

Theses

Planetary nebulae (PNe), the ionized, ejected envelopes of low- to intermediate-mass stars, are thought to be shaped by a nascent fast wind from the spent core (a future white dwarf) that collides with and sweeps up previously ejected material (red and asymptotic branch giant winds). This collision can generate an X-ray emitting "hot bubble" that fills the swept-up cavity. Circumstellar material in a dense torus or disk, likely due to an interacting binary in the PN nucleus, is widely believed to collimate the winds that shape non-spherical PNe. Hence, PNe offer excellent opportunities to study astrophysical shocks and binary interactions. …

Before The Storm: Evacuation Intention And Audience Segmentation, Homer J. Rice Nov 2010

Before The Storm: Evacuation Intention And Audience Segmentation, Homer J. Rice

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to describe the predictors of evacuation intention among coastal residents in the State of Florida and to determine if there are meaningful segments of the population who intend to evacuate when told to do so by governmental officials because of a major hurricane. In the America’s and the Caribbean, 75,000 deaths have been attributed to hurricanes in the 20

th century. A well planned evacuation can reduce injury and death, yet many people do not have an evacuation plan and do not intend to evacuate when told to do so. The study used secondary …
