Scientists And Journalists: Framing The Interaction, Marie E. Gilbert Dec 2010

Scientists And Journalists: Framing The Interaction, Marie E. Gilbert

Communication

"Humans have sent fellow beings into space, created cyberspace, determined the likely origins of our universe, and identified the genetic origins of ourselves. As members of a variety of broader, general publics, each of us likely came to know about these scientific outcomes as the result of a journalist talking to a scientist, followed by the journalists' work reaching us through television, radio, a print medium, or the Web. Few members of the public are reported to understand much about science and scientists are portrayed as unable to communicate to the everyday person. The media, as the primary source of …

Constructed Identities: Lived Experience And The Struggle To Integrate The Sexual And Religious Identities Among Lesbians, Gays, And Bisexuals, Alan C. Fredericksen

Communication

"Most, if not all, Lesbians, Gays, and Bisexuals struggle at one point of their lives to reconcile their sexual and religious identities. This struggle can be either helped or hindered within the interpersonal communicative acts that lesbians, gays, and bisexuals encounter on a daily basis throughout their lives. This study uses narrative interviews to examine the impact and affect that various interpersonal communicative acts have had on five people, some of whom identified as lesbian, gay, and bisexual. Though there is much research available regarding the struggle of this population to integrate these two identities, none was available to this …

Characterization Of Subsurface Hydraulic Conductivity Along The Proposed Alaska Gas Line Corridor Using Geophysical Signatures, Peter A. Calvin Dec 2010

Characterization Of Subsurface Hydraulic Conductivity Along The Proposed Alaska Gas Line Corridor Using Geophysical Signatures, Peter A. Calvin

Engineering

"The objective of this research was to explore a cost-effective and non-invasive methodology to characterize spatial variability of hydraulic conductivity using airborne electromagnetic (AEM) signatures as an alternative to traditional techniques such as borehole sampling. The relationship of AEM measured apparent resistivity and magnetic field strength was explored using a small dataset that included 180 natural moisture (NM) content data and a total dataset of 546 grain size distributions that excluded the NM. The grain size distributions were used to develop soil indicator parameter and to estimate the hydraulic conductivity (K*) using pedo-transfer functions. Predictive models were developed using three …

God Of Our Fathers: Catholic Chaplains In The Confederate Armies, Gary W. Mccall Dec 2010

God Of Our Fathers: Catholic Chaplains In The Confederate Armies, Gary W. Mccall

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

The Civil War contained many examples of courage and commitment to duty that were inspired by religion. In recent years much has been written on this subject of religion and the Civil War but virtually all of it is written about Protestant chaplains and this has created a gap in the record. This thesis covers the role played by Catholic chaplains in Confederate army regiments from Louisiana. It explores their life, ministry, military role, and impact on the regiments. To cover this in depth the Catholic chaplains selected we those who left published records.

Entropy In Two American Road Narratives, Sean Deskin Dec 2010

Entropy In Two American Road Narratives, Sean Deskin

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Tony Tanner's book City of Words analyzes American literature from 1950-1970; in the chapter entitled "Everything Running Down" the theme of entropy, the second law of thermodynamics, is explored and revealed to be a common motif within many works of American literature. Tanner's analysis does not specifically address the presence of entropy within the genre of the American road narrative; when considering his analysis presented in "Everything Running Down" with Kris Lackey's analysis of American road narratives presented in his book RoadFrames, the presence of entropy and how it is applied within the American road narrative becomes apparent. Although Jack …

The Germans Of Roberts Cove, Louisiana: German Rice Cultivation And The Making Of A German-American Community In Acadia Parish, 1881-1917, Lydia Soileau

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

The Germans of Geilenkirchen-Hengesburg region of Germany were convinced by relative and friend, Father Peter Leonard Thevis, of the Archdiocese of New Orleans, to emigrate to the United States for a number of reasons: political, religious, and economic. After establishing themselves on land previously used for grazing cattle, the Germans soon discovered rice could easily be cultivated in large amounts. Along with their success as rice farmers in Roberts Cove, Louisiana, these Germans soon involved themselves in politics and engaged one another and the surrounding community in numerous court cases. These court cases, overlooked by previous historians, demonstrate that the …

Comparison Of Power Flow Algorithms For Inclusion In On-Line Power Systems Operation Tools, Naveen Bokka Dec 2010

Comparison Of Power Flow Algorithms For Inclusion In On-Line Power Systems Operation Tools, Naveen Bokka

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

The goal of this thesis is to develop a new, fast, adaptive load flow algorithm that "automatically alternates" numerical methods including Newton-Raphson method, Gauss-Seidel method and Gauss method for a load flow run to achieve less run time. Unlike the proposed method, the traditional load flow analysis uses only one numerical method at a time. This adaptive algorithm performs all the computation for finding the bus voltage angles and magnitudes, real and reactive powers for the given generation and load values, while keeping track of the proximity to convergence of a solution. This work focuses on finding the algorithm that …

Estuarine Dynamics As A Function Of Barrier Island Transgression And Wetland Loss: Understanding The Transport And Exchange Processes, Jennifer Schindler Dec 2010

Estuarine Dynamics As A Function Of Barrier Island Transgression And Wetland Loss: Understanding The Transport And Exchange Processes, Jennifer Schindler

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

The Northern Gulf of Mexico and coastal Louisiana are experiencing accelerated relative sea level rise rates; therefore, the region is ideal for modeling the global affects of sea level rise (SLR) on estuarine dynamics in a transgressive barrier island setting. The field methods and numerical modeling in this study show that as barrier islands are converted to inner shoals, tidal exchange increases between the estuary and coastal ocean. If marshes are unable to accrete at a pace comparable to SLR, wetlands will deteriorate and the tidal exchange and tidal prism will further increase. Secondary to hurricanes, winter storms are a …

Water Quality Modeling Of Freshwater Diversions In The Barataria Basin, Jeevan Neupane Dec 2010

Water Quality Modeling Of Freshwater Diversions In The Barataria Basin, Jeevan Neupane

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

A 1-D tidal, salinity and water quality model that analyzes the impacts of freshwater diversions with median and high flow on the water level, salinity and nutrient concentration of the Barataria Basin over a 2 period is presented here. The model predicts that the salinity of Lower Barataria decreases with the introduction of freshwater diversions. The model also predicts that nutrient concentration increases in Barataria Basin and decreases in Northern Gulf of Mexico with the introduction of diversions. The model shows the impact of freshwater diversions on water level except in the neighborhood of the diversion sites are small.

Configuration Of The Pleistocene Surface Beneath Cat Island, Mississippi And Implications For Barrier Island Formation And Evolution, Kathryn Rose Dec 2010

Configuration Of The Pleistocene Surface Beneath Cat Island, Mississippi And Implications For Barrier Island Formation And Evolution, Kathryn Rose

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

The mechanism of Holocene barrier formation aids in determining island geomorphologic responses to modifying climatic processes of the surrounding environment. The geometry and composition of local antecedent topography plays a role in barrier formation by providing an elevated base, nucleus for sedimentation and local sediment supply. Investigation of barriers' subsurface geology provides insight into island formation and evolution. High-resolution shallow seismic data acquired in the island's nearshore zone and interior canals, correlated with existing drillcore data, reveal that Cat Island, MS is situated over an Oxygen Isotope Stage 3 Phase 3 paleochannel located between two topographic high-grounds of the Pleistocene …

Posters, Politics And Immigration During The May 1968 Protests In France, Sara Mcnamara

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

How were immigrants, immigrant issues and their histories represented through radical poster art created during the 1968 protests and strikes in France? The May 1968 protests remain one of the most significant moments in contemporary French history and it occurred during a time when immigrant populations were rapidly increasing. There is a multitude of research, analysis and reflections on the protests and strikes; yet there is very little mention of the place of immigrants during this event. Art collectives that were created during the protests designed and produced posters that later became a symbol of the strike. By using a …

Implementation Of Separable & Steerable Gaussian Smoothers On An Fpga, Arjun Joginipelly Dec 2010

Implementation Of Separable & Steerable Gaussian Smoothers On An Fpga, Arjun Joginipelly

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Smoothing filters have been extensively used for noise removal and image restoration. Directional filters are widely used in computer vision and image processing tasks such as motion analysis, edge detection, line parameter estimation and texture analysis. It is practically impossible to tune the filters to all possible positions and orientations in real time due to huge computation requirement. The efficient way is to design a few basis filters, and express the output of a directional filter as a weighted sum of the basis filter outputs. Directional filters having these properties are called "Steerable Filters." This thesis work emphasis is on …

A Web Service For Protein Refinement And Refinement Of Membrane Proteins, Kapil Pothakanoori Dec 2010

A Web Service For Protein Refinement And Refinement Of Membrane Proteins, Kapil Pothakanoori

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

The structures obtained from homology modeling methods are of intermediate resolution 1-3Ã… from true structure. Energy minimization methods allow us to refine the proteins and obtain native like structures. Previous work shows that some of these methods performed well on soluble proteins. So we extended this work on membrane proteins. Prediction of membrane protein structures is a particularly important, since they are important biological drug targets, and since their number is vanishingly small, as a result of the inherent difficulties in working with these molecules experimentally. Hence there is a pressing need for alternative computational protein structure prediction methods. This …

Highly Sensitive And Selective Gas Sensors Based On Vertically Aligned Metal Oxide Nanowire Arrays, Jiajun Chen Dec 2010

Highly Sensitive And Selective Gas Sensors Based On Vertically Aligned Metal Oxide Nanowire Arrays, Jiajun Chen

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Mimicking the biological olfactory systems that consist of olfactory receptor arrays with large surface area and massively-diversified chemical reactivity, three dimensional (3D) metal oxide nanowire arrays were used as the active materials for gas detection. Metal oxide nanowire arrays share similar 3D structures as the array of mammal's olfactory receptors and the chemical reactivity of nanowire array can be modified by surface coatings. In this dissertation, two standalone gas sensors based on metal oxide nanowire arrays prepared by microfabrication and in-situ micromanipulation, respectively, have been demonstrated. The sensors based on WO3 nanowire arrays can detect 50 ppb NO2 with a …

Understanding Bullying Participant Roles: Stability Across School Years And Personality And Behavioral Correlates, Ann Crapanzano

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

This study investigated the factorial validity, stability, and social, behavioral and emotional correlates of several different roles that students can play in the context of bullying. Data were collected from students at two time points across two school years, April and May of 2006 (n=284) and again in November and December of 2006 (n=185). A confirmatory factor analysis provided evidence for the validity of 4 participant roles (i.e. bully, reinforcer, assistant, and defender). However, further analysis revealed that there was a strong degree of intercorrelation between the three bully factors (i.e., bully, reinforcer, and assistant). Analyses found that participant roles …

Implementation Of Directional Median Filtering Using Field Programmable Gate Arrays, Madhuri Gundam Dec 2010

Implementation Of Directional Median Filtering Using Field Programmable Gate Arrays, Madhuri Gundam

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Median filtering is a non-linear filtering technique which is effective in removing impulsive noise from data. In this thesis, directional median filtering has been implemented using cumulative histogram of samples in several directions. Different methods to implement directional median filtering have been proposed. The filtered images are smoothed along the direction of the filtering window. All implementations aimed to generate outputs in the least amount of time, while reducing the resource utilization on hardware. The implementation methods were designed for Xilinx Virtex 5 FPGA devices but were also attempted on Spartan 3E. The proposed methods used less than 30% of …
