Solar Wind Implantation Model For Be-10 In Calcium-Aluminum Inclusions, G. E. Bricker, M. W. Caffee Dec 2010

Solar Wind Implantation Model For Be-10 In Calcium-Aluminum Inclusions, G. E. Bricker, M. W. Caffee

Department of Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

We propose a model for the incorporation of Be-10 within calcium-aluminum inclusions (CAIs) in primitive carbonaceous meteorites. In this model, Be-10 is produced by energetic particle reactions in the proto-solar atmosphere of a more active proto-Sun characterized by energetic particle fluxes higher than contemporary particle fluxes. This Be-10 is incorporated into the solar wind that is then implanted into CAI precursor material. This production mechanism is operational in the contemporary solar system implanting Be-10 in lunar materials. The contemporary production rate of Be-10 at the surface of the Sun is similar to 0.1 Be-10 cm(-2) s(-1). Scaling up the contemporary …

Web Reviews: Nsf Data Management Plan: A Primer, Lisa Johnston

Sci-Tech News

Breaking away from the usual format, this month I’ve decided to focus on a hot topic that should be on the minds of anyone who deals with science and technology researchers and organizations: the National Science Foundation (NSF) Data Management Plan (DMP). This new requirement will open the door to many new conversations with our users about how they manage their data and what we, as library and information professionals, can do to help preserve and disseminate their research data for future generations of researchers. You may use this column as a guide to getting started on developing your own …

The Phenomenology Of The Bachelor Of Science In Hvac Engineering Technology From Ferris State University, Michael Feutz Dec 2010

The Phenomenology Of The Bachelor Of Science In Hvac Engineering Technology From Ferris State University, Michael Feutz

Dissertations

Career and Technical Education (CTE) has evolved from industry-specific training to a more broad-based education that incorporates core academic learning objectives and prepares the student for work (Rothwell & Gerity, 2008; Uloa, 2006; Reese, 2002; Rojewski, 2002; Stone, 2002; Schmidli, 2001). Little is known about how well individual programs align with the industry for which graduates are prepared, (Zinser, 2003) or what CTE has meant to its graduates.

This research focused on graduates of the Bachelor of Science in Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning Engineering Technology (HVAC-ET) at Ferris State University in Big Rapids, Michigan. A phenomenological design was used …

Ambiguity Now, Martin Harrison Dec 2010

Ambiguity Now, Martin Harrison

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his article "Ambiguity Now" Martin Harrison focuses on the pivotal place which modernist critical theory ascribed to ambiguity in the definition of meaning and structure in poetry. In particular, Harrison considers the way in which the category of experience is deployed in the discourse of ambiguity but is limited to only certain narratives of so-called experience. Harrison argues for a contemporary practice less focused on ambiguity and more on notation and provisional structure, demonstrating key elements of such practice in the work of modern poets Leslie Scalapino and Frank Bidart and the poet-artist Alex Selenitsch.

Sweeping Minimum Perimeter Enclosing Parallelograms: Optimal Crumb Cleanup, Yonit Bousany, Mary Leah Karker, Joseph O'Rourke, Leona Sparaco

Computer Science: Faculty Publications

We examine the problem of pushing all the points of a planar region into one point using parallel sweeps of an infinite line, minimizing the sum of the lengths of the sweep vectors. We characterize the optimal 2-sweeps of triangles, and provide a linear-time algorithm for convex polygons.

Active Bundles For Protecting Confidentiality Of Sensitive Data Throughout Their Lifecycle, Lotfi Ben Othmane Dec 2010

Active Bundles For Protecting Confidentiality Of Sensitive Data Throughout Their Lifecycle, Lotfi Ben Othmane

Dissertations

Protecting confidentiality of shared sensitive data requires satisfying conflicting needs for disseminating data and preventing unauthorized data disclosures. We propose a solution named the active bundles scheme for protecting sensitive data from their disclosures to unauthorized parties during their dissemination. The scheme protects data throughout their entire lifecycle, from data creation through their dissemination to their evaporation or apoptosis (a partial or complete self-destruction, respectively).

An active bundle packages together sensitive data, metadata, and a virtual machine (VM) specific to the bundle. Metadata contain information related to the use of data, including data access control and dissemination policies. A VM …

An Investigation Of Sustainable Environmental Practices And Consumer Attitudes & Behaviors Toward Hotel Bathroom Amenities, Edward James Bobbett Dec 2010

An Investigation Of Sustainable Environmental Practices And Consumer Attitudes & Behaviors Toward Hotel Bathroom Amenities, Edward James Bobbett

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

In the 1980s hotel operators became concerned with greening and sustainability. It was at this time the hospitality industry began focusing on energy efficiency and the sustainable development of tourism (Chan & Lam, 2001; Welford, Ytterhus, & Eligh, 1999). Since then, a global trend has emerged as hotels introduce programs to reduce the amount of resources used and the overall environmental impact they have on the planet, or their carbon footprint. The hospitality industry has introduced programs such as recycling in both the front and back of the house, energy-efficient lighting, towel re-use programs, linen exchange programs, Green Certifications, and …

Analyzing The Impact Of Reactive Transport On The Repository Performance Of Triso Fuel, Gregory Schmidt Dec 2010

Analyzing The Impact Of Reactive Transport On The Repository Performance Of Triso Fuel, Gregory Schmidt

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

One of the largest determiners of the amount of electricity generated by current nuclear reactors is the efficiency of the thermodynamic cycle used for power generation. Current light water reactors (LWR) have an efficiency of 35% or less for the conversion of heat energy generated by the reactor to electrical energy. If this efficiency could be improved, more power could be generated from equivalent volumes of nuclear fuel. One method of improving this efficiency is to use a coolant flow that operates at a much higher temperature for electricity production. A reactor design that is currently proposed to take advantage …

Evaluating The Energy And Carbon Footprint Of Water Conveyance System And Future Water Supply Options For Las Vegas, Nevada, Eleeja Shrestha Dec 2010

Evaluating The Energy And Carbon Footprint Of Water Conveyance System And Future Water Supply Options For Las Vegas, Nevada, Eleeja Shrestha

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Water production requires the use of energy to transport water from distant locations, pump groundwater from deep aquifers and treat water to meet stringent drinking water and wastewater regulations. Energy production based on its source involves the emission of greenhouse gases also known as carbon footprint, which is the leading cause of global warming and climate change. Because of growing concerns of global warming due to these emissions, water providers are required to analyze the energy and associated carbon footprint of existing water production facilities and future water supply options. A system dynamics model is developed to estimate the energy …

The Determinants Of Colorectal Cancer Survival Disparities In Nevada, Lucas N. Wassira Dec 2010

The Determinants Of Colorectal Cancer Survival Disparities In Nevada, Lucas N. Wassira

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Different population groups across Nevada and throughout the United States suffer disproportionately from colorectal cancer and its after-effects. Overcoming cancer health disparities is important for lessening the burden of cancer. There has been an overall decline in the incidence of and mortality from colorectal cancer (CRC). This is likely due, in part, to the increasing use of screening procedures such as Fecal Occult Blood Test (FOBT) and/or endoscopy, which can reduce the risk of CRC mortality by fifty percent. Nevertheless, screening procedures are routinely used by only fifty percent of Americans aged fifty years and older. Despite overall mortality decreasing …

Rare Earth Element Transport In The Yucca Mountain Region, Liqiong Zhang Dec 2010

Rare Earth Element Transport In The Yucca Mountain Region, Liqiong Zhang

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

In sync with environmental pollution of solutes in nature, from source, process to consequence, geochemical processes (leaching and sorption) and hydraulic transportation of the rare earth elements (REEs) have been investigated at Yucca Mountain (YM), Nevada. This research includes the leaching behavior of trace elements (including REEs) from aquifer rocks, the surface complexation reactions of REEs in synthetic groundwater, and transportation of reactive REEs in the local-scale groundwater system of YM. This dissertation includes three projects. These studies indicate that surface complexation reactions may retard the transportation of REEs along groundwater paths in YM, which suggests a similar behavior of …

Measurement System For High Pressure Characterizations Of Materials, Matthew K. Jacobsen

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Thermoelectric materials have long been investigated for possible use as power sources. This application was recently put to use in the Voyager space program, powering the deep space probes. Despite the usefulness of these materials, the use of pressure to investigate the material properties has only recently become interesting. As such, the work in this document was to developing a system for concurrently measuring the necessary properties. This system is capable of measuring the electrical resistivity, thermal conductivity, and Seebeck coefficient in the pressure range from 0 - 10 GPa. The results for zinc, almandine garnet, and nickel are presented …

Structures On A K3 Surface, Nathan P. Rowe Dec 2010

Structures On A K3 Surface, Nathan P. Rowe

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

In the first part of this paper, we examine properties of K3 surfaces of the form:

(x2 + 1)(y2 + 1)(z2 + 1) + Axyz − 2 = 0

We show the surface has Picard number q " 12 by finding 12 curves whose equivalence classes are linearly independent. These curves have self intersection −2. We find the lattice representations of the single-coordinate swapping automorphisms in x, y, and z. We show that we have enough of the Lattice to make accurate predictions of polynomial degree growth under the automorphisms. We describe these automorphisms in terms of operations on elliptic …

Classification Algorithms For Genomic Microarray, Rakesh Choudary Malepati Dec 2010

Classification Algorithms For Genomic Microarray, Rakesh Choudary Malepati

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

The advent of new technologies like DNA micro-arrays provides scientists the ability to gather important information such as the expression levels of almost all the genes within a cell. As the collected data is huge, it is always necessary to use analytical methods to extract important information which can be useful in biological and medical applications. One of such applications is presented in (Van‟t Veer LJ 2002), where the authors used the gene expression values obtained from micro-arrays of breast cancer cells to predict the outcome of the disease. The prediction is based on a supervised classification. While the idea …

Must Pay Now, David C. Perkins Dec 2010

Must Pay Now, David C. Perkins

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

These poems attempt to stand amidst the towering shadows of Enlightenment. One of these pillars involves the newfound land from a collective western European vantage and these lands are called the Americas. This space is where these poems are located. They suckle at the monolithic breasts of Enlightened Romance as did Romulus and Remus to the She-Wolf. The poems in their own originality engage with writers such as Jonathan Edwards, Alice Notley, Susan Howe, Frank O’Hara, William Carlos Williams, Walt Whitman, Christina Rossetti, William Blake, and John Cage. If there ever was such a thread in tradition, these people might …

Effect Of Network Structure On The Stability Margin Of Large Vehicle With Distributed Control, He Hao, Prabir Barooah, J. J. P. Veerman Dec 2010

Effect Of Network Structure On The Stability Margin Of Large Vehicle With Distributed Control, He Hao, Prabir Barooah, J. J. P. Veerman

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

We study the problem of distributed control of a large network of double-integrator agents to maintain a rigid formation. A few lead vehicles are given information on the desired trajectory of the formation; while every other vehicle uses linear controller which only depends on relative position and velocity from a few other vehicles, which are called its neighbors. A predetermined information graph defines the neighbor relationships. We limit our attention to information graphs that are D-dimensional lattices, and examine the stability margin of the closed loop, which is measured by the real part of the least stable eigenvalue of …

An Investigation Of Carrier Transport In Hafnium Oxide/Silicon Dioxide Mos Gate Dielectric Stacks From 5.6-400k, Richard G. Southwick Iii Dec 2010

An Investigation Of Carrier Transport In Hafnium Oxide/Silicon Dioxide Mos Gate Dielectric Stacks From 5.6-400k, Richard G. Southwick Iii

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

Hafnium oxide (HfO2) is replacing silicon dioxide (SiO2) as the gate dielectric in metal oxide semiconductor (MOS) structures driven mainly by need to reduce high leakage currents observed in sub-2nm SiO2. The high dielectric constant of HfO2 (~25) compared to SiO2 (3.9 bulk) allows a thicker HfO2 layer to be used in place of the thinner SiO2 layer thereby reducing the gate leakage current in MOS devices while maintaining the same capacitive coupling provided by the thinner SiO2. However, incorporating HfO2 into MOS devices produces a SiO …

Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

The Tennessee River Gorge (TRG) is a large river canyon 8 km west of Chattanooga, Tennessee, on the Cumberland Plateau. In 1984, the Tennessee Natural Heritage Program (TNHP) described 21 vegetation communities within the TRG. Permanent vegetation plots for the long-term study of 13 of these communities were established in summer 2009 in order to fulfill three goals. The first goal was to provide baseline data for long-term monitoring through establishing and surveying 100 plots. The second goal was to perform a temporal comparison of each community to its original description from 1984. The third goal was performing a comparison …

Winslow Elliptic Smoothing Equations Extended To Apply To General Regions Of An Unstructured Mesh, James Steven Masters Dec 2010

Winslow Elliptic Smoothing Equations Extended To Apply To General Regions Of An Unstructured Mesh, James Steven Masters

Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

In any engineering endeavor, it is important to have the ability to efficiently and intelligently break up a region of interest in order to explore and investigate the interesting and dynamic aspects of the system enclosed in the region. In the field of fluid mechanics - and, in particular, computational fluid dynamics - this region breakup (known as discretization) has traditionally been done using structured meshes but, because of their flexibility with capturing real-world geometry, unstructured meshes are being increasingly utilized. Not surprisingly, techniques that have traditionally been reserved for structured meshes are migrating to the world of unstructured meshing …
