Predictive Data-Derived Bayesian Statistic-Transport Model And Simulator Of Sunken Oil Mass, Maria Angelica Echavarria Gregory Aug 2010

Predictive Data-Derived Bayesian Statistic-Transport Model And Simulator Of Sunken Oil Mass, Maria Angelica Echavarria Gregory

Open Access Dissertations

Sunken oil is difficult to locate because remote sensing techniques cannot as yet provide views of sunken oil over large areas. Moreover, the oil may re-suspend and sink with changes in salinity, sediment load, and temperature, making deterministic fate models difficult to deploy and calibrate when even the presence of sunken oil is difficult to assess. For these reasons, together with the expense of field data collection, there is a need for a statistical technique integrating limited data collection with stochastic transport modeling. Predictive Bayesian modeling techniques have been developed and demonstrated for exploiting limited information for decision support in …

Integrated Affinity Column Capillary Electrophoresis Microdevices For Biomarker Analysis, Weichun Yang Aug 2010

Integrated Affinity Column Capillary Electrophoresis Microdevices For Biomarker Analysis, Weichun Yang

Theses and Dissertations

In this dissertation, microfluidic systems that integrate antibody-based sample preparation methods with electrophoretic separation are developed to analyze multiple biomarkers in a point-of-care setting. To form an affinity column, both monolith materials and wall-coated channels were explored. I successfully demonstrated that monolith columns can be prepared in microfluidic devices via photopolymerization. The selectivity of monolith columns was improved by immobilizing antibodies on the surface. These affinity columns can selectively enrich target analytes and reduce the signal of contaminant proteins up to 25,000 fold after immunoaffinity extraction. These results clearly demonstrate that microchip affinity monoliths can selectively concentrate and purify target …

Development And Applications Of The Hint Forcefield In Prediction Of Antibiotic Efflux And Virtual Screening For Antivirals, Aurijit Sarkar

Theses and Dissertations

This work was aimed at developing novel tools that utilize HINT, an empirical forcefield capable of quantitating both hydrophobic and hydrophilic (hydropathic) interactions, for implementation in theoretical biology and drug discovery/design. The role of hydrophobicity in determination of macromolecular structure and formation of complexes in biological molecules is undeniable and has been the subject of research across several decades. Hydrophobicity is introduced, with a review of its history and contemporary theories. This is followed by a description of various methods that quantify this all-pervading phenomenon and their use in protein folding and contemporary drug design projects – including a detailed …

Mitochondrial Control Region Variation Among The Subspecies Of Sarus Crane (Grus Antigone), Ranajit Das Aug 2010

Mitochondrial Control Region Variation Among The Subspecies Of Sarus Crane (Grus Antigone), Ranajit Das

Theses

Sarus cranes (Grus antigone) are the tallest members of the crane family, Gruidae. They are found in four geographically distinct regions: northwest India (Indian Sarus- Grus antigone antigone), southeast Asia (Burmese Sarus- Grus antigone sharpei) and northern Australia (Australian Sarus- Grus antigone gillae). Although the three subspecies are morphologically distinct, their genetic distinctness is unclear. In this study, I focused on control region sequences of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) to assess the genetic and phylogeographic distinctness of Sarus subspecies. I used samples from four fragmented populations, seven from India, 16 from southeast Asia, five from Myanmar and eight from Australia. Phylogenetic …

Embedded Math Credit: Is There A Relationship Between Nclb’S Hqtc And Secondary Cte Students’ Outcomes?, John S. Gaal

Online Journal for Workforce Education and Development

U.S. business leaders, politicians, educators, and others within the community have been inundated with reports that claim many of today’s high school graduates are ill-prepared, from a functional literacy standpoint, to face the challenges posed by the global marketplace (Achieve, 2004; Brown et al., 2005; Friedman, 2005; and Judy & D’Amico, 1997). In an effort to ensure today’s students are better prepared for a world of work that is driven by technology, U.S. Congress passed the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act at the behest of former President Bush in 2001. Consequently, school districts throughout the U.S. have responded to …

Distance Learning And How Access To Education Can Be Improved, Scott Collins, Richard C. Mckinnies, Sandra K. Collins

Online Journal for Workforce Education and Development

Throughout history, access to quality education has been an issue for many individuals. There are a variety of reasons which may have contributed to the accessibility issues including race, economic status, health conditions, and the general geographic region where a person lives. These barriers have historically prevented many people from receiving equal educational opportunities.

With advances in technology, distance education is emerging as a formidable opponent and could potentially even the playing field in terms of educational access. In order to determine the viability of this method of delivering education, a historical evolution of distance learning (DL) was explored. This …

Partial And Spectral-Viscosity Models For Geophysical Flows, Qingshan Chen, Max Gunzburger, Xiaoming Wang

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Two models based on the hydrostatic primitive equations are proposed. the first model is the primitive equations with partial viscosity only and is oriented towards large-scale wave structures in the ocean and atmosphere. the second model is the viscous primitive equations with spectral eddy viscosity and is oriented towards turbulent geophysical flows. for both models, the existence and uniqueness of global strong solutions are established. for the second model, the convergence of the solutions to the solutions of the classical primitive equations as eddy viscosity parameters tend to zero is also established. © 2010 Editorial Office of CAM (Fudan University) …

Examples Of Boundary Layers Associated With The Incompressible Navier-Stokes Equations, Xiaoming Wang Aug 2010

Examples Of Boundary Layers Associated With The Incompressible Navier-Stokes Equations, Xiaoming Wang

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

The author surveys a few examples of boundary layers for which the Prandtl boundary layer theory can be rigorously validated. All of them are associated with the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations for Newtonian fluids equipped with various Dirichlet boundary conditions (specified velocity). These examples include a family of (nonlinear 3D) plane parallel flows, a family of (nonlinear) parallel pipe flows, as well as flows with uniform injection and suction at the boundary. We also identify a key ingredient in establishing the validity of the Prandtl type theory, i.e., a spectral constraint on the approximate solution to the Navier-Stokes system constructed by …

Trans-Excision-Splicing Ribozyme And Methods Of Use, Stephen M. Testa, Michael A. Bell Aug 2010

Trans-Excision-Splicing Ribozyme And Methods Of Use, Stephen M. Testa, Michael A. Bell

Chemistry Faculty Patents

A group I intron-derived ribozyme which binds RNA in trans, excises an internal segment from within the RNA, and splices the remaining 5′ and 3′ ends of the RNA back together (the trans-excision-splicing reaction) is disclosed. The excised segment can be as long as 28 nucleotides, or more, and as little as one nucleotide. The ribozymes of the invention are easily modified to alter their sequence specificity. Such ribozymes represent a new and potentially powerful class of generally adaptable genetic therapeutics.

Impact Of Fines Content On Resilient Modulus Reduction Of Base Courses During Thawing, Lin Li Aug 2010

Impact Of Fines Content On Resilient Modulus Reduction Of Base Courses During Thawing, Lin Li

Engineering

"Resilient modulus (MR) of base course material is an important material input for pavement design. In Alaska, due to distinctiveness of local climate, material source, fines content and groundwater level, resilient properties of D-1 granular base course materials are significantly affected by seasonal changes. The presence of fines (P₂₀₀) affects frost susceptibility of base materials and controls the aggregates' ability to support vehicular load, especially during the spring-thaw period. To systematically evaluate the impact of fines content on the resilient properties of D-1 base course materials with varied fines content, gradation, moisture content and temperature during thawing and provide regression …

Chemistry and Biochemistry

"Military training and testing exercises using explosive ordnances has resulted in training range surface soil becoming contaminated with high explosive (HE) residues. Composition B (Comp B) is a commonly used military formulation composed of 2, 4, 6-trinitrotoluene (TNT) and hexahydro-1, 3, 5-trinitro-1, 3, 5-triazine (RDX), two toxic HE materials. The potential risk of human exposure to these compounds and the efficacy of remediation efforts depend on the fate and transport of each compound in the environment. Numerous investigations of the temporal fate of HE compounds in soil materials have been conducted, however, most of these studies relied on the application …

Science Education In Rural America: Adaptations For The Ivory Tower, Gregory S. Van Doren Aug 2010

Science Education In Rural America: Adaptations For The Ivory Tower, Gregory S. Van Doren

Indigenous Studies

This thesis illustrated what can happen when academic culture disconnects from the cultures surrounding it. It showed that formal school environments are not always the best places to learn. A discussion of the debate between coherence and fragmentation learning theories illustrated academic chasms and a mindset that science education must originate from within ivory towers to be valued. Rationales for place-based science education were developed. Two National Science Foundation initiatives were compared and contrasted for relevance to Native Science education (a) Informal Science Education and (b) Science Education for New Civic Engagement and Responsibilities. A National Science Foundation instrument, known …

'This Open Sore Of The World:' The Legacy Of Dr. David Livingstone, The First Physician Missionary: Hero And Adventurer, Audrey Provenzano

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

At the end of the nineteenth century, Dr. David Livingstone became extraordinarily famous throughout Europe as the first physician-missionary. Livingstone embodied certain characteristics, adventurism and heroism, that Europeans found desirable and commendable. Livingstone issued a call for young men, particularly physicians, to follow him to Africa and continue his work. Using personal letters, journals, and other accounts of the physicians who followed Livingstone to Africa, specifically the region of Buganda, this paper explores how these themes of heroism and adventurism can be traced through the lives of the physicians who responded to Livingstones call. This paper traces these common themes …

Oxidative Stress Is Transient And Tissue-Specific During Cold Acclimation Of Threespine Sticklebacks, Aaron R. Kammer

Biological Sciences

We sought to determine if oxidative stress occurs in liver, oxidative muscle or glycolytic muscle of threespine sticklebacks during cold acclimation. Fishes were held at 20°C for 12 wks and then acclimated to 8°C for 9 wks or held at 20°C for an additional 9 wks. Animals were harvested during the first four days of cold acclimation, and at wk 1, 4 and 9. Protein carbonyls were quantified as an indirect measure of the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS). The activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD), levels of SOD mRNA, and glutathione levels were quantified as indices of protection against …

Evaluation Of The Loss Of Functionality Of Xanthan Gum Based Drill-In Fluid And Its Impact On Coiled Tubing Drilling, Idowu Dosunmu Aug 2010

Evaluation Of The Loss Of Functionality Of Xanthan Gum Based Drill-In Fluid And Its Impact On Coiled Tubing Drilling, Idowu Dosunmu

Engineering

"A challenge that has recently arisen in coiled tubing drilling is the loss of functionality of xanthan gum drill-in fluid with drilled depth in the well. The overall objective of this study is to analyze and assess the causes for this loss of optimal functionality. Twenty-four field samples from two field cases and five laboratory prepared samples were tested to study the changes in theological parameters, salinity effects and compatibility with shale formations. It was observed that the fluid's functionality was directly related to low shear rate viscosity, which is affected by xanthan gum concentration and the ionic strength of …

Analysis Of Wind-Diesel Hybrid Option In Buckland, Deering And Noorvik Villages Of Alaska, Chinedum Francis Onukogu Aug 2010

Analysis Of Wind-Diesel Hybrid Option In Buckland, Deering And Noorvik Villages Of Alaska, Chinedum Francis Onukogu

Engineering

"The high cost of energy in remote off-grid villages of Alaska is a major concern for Alaska. The primary cause is due the relatively high cost of fuel transportation to the remote villages. A hybrid technology of wind power combined with diesel power is one option for reducing costs. The wind-diesel hybrid technology has already been implemented successfully in some remote villages; however this technology is not yet mature and presents many site-specific considerations. This thesis presents a techno-economic feasibility analysis for three villages currently considering implementing wind-diesel technology. The analysis was principally performed using HOMER, an energy modeling software …

Developing An Integrated Curriculum Model For Construction Management Education, Dale Mcdaniel

Online Journal for Workforce Education and Development

The issue of how to develop curriculum for construction management programs has been debated for several years by university faculty. Construction management is a recognized discipline that needs to maintain a strong identity positioned between architecture and engineering. Graduates of construction management programs should be prepared to meet the needs of the construction industry for managing complex projects. Therefore, construction management education needs a curriculum model that will help university faculty to achieve and maintain relevant construction management programs. This paper describes a curriculum model that integrates curriculum development, instructional design, and program evaluation.
