Evaluating Effectiveness Of Best Management Practices To Control Accelerated Sedimentation Of The Morro Bay Estuary, Misgana K. Muleta Aug 2010

Evaluating Effectiveness Of Best Management Practices To Control Accelerated Sedimentation Of The Morro Bay Estuary, Misgana K. Muleta

Civil and Environmental Engineering

The Morro Bay estuary, located on the central Coast of California approximately half way between Los Angeles and San Francisco, is one of the most important wetlands on the west Coast as it supports wide variety of habitats including numerous sensitive and endangered plant and animal species. Various studies have identified accelerated erosion and subsequent sedimentation as a major threat for sustainability of the bay. Watershed disturbances caused by agricultural activities are believed to be one of the major causes of the accelerated erosion and sedimentation. More than 200 conservation practices have been installed in the watershed since the mid-1990 …

Identification Of Methylated Genes Associated With Aggressive Bladder Cancer, Carmen J. Marsit, E. Andres Houseman, Brock C. Christensen, Luc Gagne, Margaret R. Wrensch, Heather H. Nelson, Joseph Weimels, Shichun Zheng, John K. Wiencke, Angeline S. Andrew, Alan R. Schned, Margaret R. Karagas, Karl T. Kelsey

Dartmouth Scholarship

Approximately 500,000 individuals diagnosed with bladder cancer in the U.S. require routine cystoscopic follow-up to monitor for disease recurrences or progression, resulting in over $ 2 billion in annual expenditures. Identification of new diagnostic and monitoring strategies are clearly needed, and markers related to DNA methylation alterations hold great promise due to their stability, objective measurement, and known associations with the disease and with its clinical features. To identify novel epigenetic markers of aggressive bladder cancer, we utilized a high-throughput DNA methylation bead-array in two distinct population-based series of incident bladder cancer (n = 73 and n = 264, respectively). …

Penetration Testing And Vulnerability Assessments: A Professional Approach, Konstantinos Xynos, Iain Sutherland, Huw Read, Emlyn Everitt, Andrew J C Blyth

International Cyber Resilience conference

Attacks against computer systems and the data contained within these systems are becoming increasingly frequent and evermore sophisticated. So-called “zero-day” exploits can be purchased on black markets and Advanced Persistent Threats (APTs) can lead to exfiltration of data over extended periods. Organisations wishing to ensure security of their systems may look towards adopting appropriate measures to protect themselves against potential security breaches. One such measure is to hire the services of penetration testers (or “pen-tester”) to find vulnerabilities present in the organisation’s network, and provide recommendations as to how best to mitigate such risks. This paper discusses the definition and …

Group-Based Social Network Characterisation Of Hidden Terrorist Networks, Belinda A. Chiera Aug 2010

Group-Based Social Network Characterisation Of Hidden Terrorist Networks, Belinda A. Chiera

International Cyber Resilience conference

Hidden networks arise in high-dimensional network structures when the hidden network members camouflage their existence by appearing randomly connected to the larger network structure, but in reality ensure they remain in persistent contact with one another over time. This paper takes a first step towards determining how to locate such hidden networks through the novel use of group-based social network metrics to characterise the features of hidden networks. Micro, meso and macro-level network analyses of the September 11 network and a selection of popular simulated terrorist network structures will show that the simulated networks are highly visible whereas the hidden …

Is Cyber Resilience In Medical Practice Security Achievable? , Patricia A H Williams Aug 2010

Is Cyber Resilience In Medical Practice Security Achievable? , Patricia A H Williams

International Cyber Resilience conference

Australia is moving to a national e-health system with a high level of interconnectedness. The scenario for recovery of such a system, particularly once it is heavily relied upon, may be complex. Primary care medical practices are a fundamental part of the new e-health environment yet function as separate business entities within Australia’s healthcare system. Individually this means that recovery would be reliant on the self-sufficiency of each medical practice. However, the ability of these practices to individually and collectively recover is questionable. The current status of information security in primary care medical practices is compared to the needs of …

Developing Robust Voip Router Honeypots Using Device Fingerprints , Craig Valli, Mohammed Al-Lawati

International Cyber Resilience conference

As the telegram was replaced by telephony, so to Voice over IP (VoIP) systems are replacing conventional switched wire telephone devices, these systems rely on Internet connectivity for the transmission of voice conversations. This paper is an outline of ongoing preliminary research into malfeasant VoIP activity on the Internet. 30 years ago PABX systems were compromised by hackers wanting to make long distance calls at some other entities expense. This activity faded as telephony became cheaper and PABX systems had countermeasures installed to overcome attacks. Now the world has moved onto the provision of telephony via broadband enabled Voice over …

Analytic Treatment Of Vortex States In Cylindrical Superconductors In Applied Axial Magnetic Field, Andrei Ludu, J. Van Deun, M. V, Milosevic, A. Cuyt, F. M. Peeters Aug 2010

Analytic Treatment Of Vortex States In Cylindrical Superconductors In Applied Axial Magnetic Field, Andrei Ludu, J. Van Deun, M. V, Milosevic, A. Cuyt, F. M. Peeters

Publications

We solve the linear Ginzburg–Landau GL equation in the presence of a uniform magnetic field with cylindrical symmetry and we find analytic expressions for the eigenfunctions in terms of the confluent hypergeometric functions. The discrete spectrum results from an implicit equation associated to the boundary conditions and it is resolved in analytic form using the continued fractions formalism. We study the dependence of the spectrum and the eigenfunctions on the sample size and the surface conditions for solid and hollow cylindrical superconductors. Finally, the solutions of the nonlinear GL formalism are constructed as expansions in the linear GL eigenfunction basis …

Educating Design Intuition: A Survey Of Problem Solving Methods Used In Architecture And Interior Design Studios, Jon Davey

Online Journal for Workforce Education and Development

The scope of this research aims not only to define and explore the strengths and limitations of humans' "sixth sense" intuition, but also to discover how it can be improved in design thinking and better understood during the maturation of a design student. Intuition is aligned with, among other things, automatic, tacit and unconscious processing, implicit memory, and procedural knowledge. Broadbent (1973) argued in Design in Architecture that there were seven avenues to approach any particular problem, to include deduction, induction, algorithm, ratio, analogy, metaphor, and chance. But perchance, there might be another that is often overlooked; that is intuition. …

School-To-Work Programs Effectiveness, Kathleen Mary Kash Aug 2010

School-To-Work Programs Effectiveness, Kathleen Mary Kash

Online Journal for Workforce Education and Development

Most high schools provide programs to prepare students for college or employment after graduation. These programs, also known as School-to-Work Programs, are supposed to help direct students to the career field that they would like to pursue. Unfortunately, the programs provided by the schools are not as effective as they should be. One of the main reasons why these programs are unsuccessful is due to the lack of participation from local businesses. Businesses are unwilling to participate because of the cost to partake in the program, the time that is involved with the program and the loss of retention for …

Mechanistic Studies Of In Vitro Cytotoxicity Of Poly(Amidoamine) Dendrimers In Mammalian Cells, Sourav Prasanna Mukherjee, Fiona Lyng, Amaya Garcia, Maria Davoren, Hugh Byrne

Articles

Poly(amidoamine) (PAMAM) dendrimer nanoparticles have been demonstrated to elicit a well defined cytotoxicological response from mammalian cell lines, the response increasing systematically with dendrimer generation and number of surface amino groups. In this work, using generation G4, G5, and G6 dendrimers, this systematic response is furthermore demonstrated for the generation of reactive oxygen species, lysosomal activity, and the onset of apoptosis and levels of DNA damage. The results are consistent with a pathway of localisation of PAMAM dendrimers in the mitochondria leading to ROS production causing oxidative stress, apoptosis and DNA damage. ROS production is co-located in the mitochondria, and …

Attendance and graduation rates of Latinos in institutions of higher education in the United States are improving. Educational attainment is critical to upward mobility in the labor market (Kao & Thompson, 2003; Erlach, 2000; Morales, 2000). College completion rates and earning a degree are significant predictors of earning potential and occupational choice (Morales, 2000). The Latino population is growing faster than any other group and has the highest (35.5%) proportion of people younger than age 18 (NCLR, 2001; U.S. Census Bureau, 2000; Schmidt, 2003). This paper reports the results of a descriptive and inferential study, which examined Latino college completers …

Mapping In Philanthropy: Exploring The Use Of Mapping In Foundation Grantmaking, Jim Casey Aug 2010

Mapping In Philanthropy: Exploring The Use Of Mapping In Foundation Grantmaking, Jim Casey

Geography and the Environment: Graduate Student Capstones

Foundations provide grants to nonprofit organizations in our communities, who then provide services locally. Choosing which nonprofit to fund, and which not to fund is difficult. This study examines current uses and upcoming uses of mapping and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) as part of funding decisions made by foundations. Foundations engaged in strategic funding, especially that which targets specific populations are more likely to use GIS and geospatial analysis in funding decisions. Grantmaking in response to proposals requires less strategic analysis and calls for mapping much less by comparison. As a field, nationally foundations and nonprofits have identified many uses …

A Gis Model To Predict Feral Pig (Sus Scrofa) Habitat On Vandenberg Air Force Base, California, Brian Schnick

Geography and the Environment: Graduate Student Capstones

The applicable Natural Resource area of this project is animal control and wildlife management, as wild pigs can be quite destructive to landscapes (Campbell, et al., 2010) (McCann, et al., 2008). Geographic Information System (GIS) predictive models have proven to be useful in regards to other mammals (Travaini, et al., 2007), raptors (Bustamante, et al., 2004), and pest species such as locusts (van der Werf, et al., 2005). Pigs are often nocturnal and bed down in heavy cover, hindering direct observation. Additionally, Vandenberg Air Force Base (VAFB) encompasses over 400 square kilometers. Therefore, predictive modeling is an appropriate method for …

Developing Tornado Climatology In The Southern Great Plains Per Phases Of Prominent Oceanic Oscillations, Nicholas M. Fillo

Geography and the Environment: Graduate Student Capstones

Meteorologists are continually working toward a greater understanding of which atmospheric environments are most conducive for tornado development. This Capstone project analyzed tornado occurrences across Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas and Louisiana during the period 1950 through 2009 to determine if any correlation exists between the location and frequency of tornado activity and the phases of the El Nino-Southern Oscillation, the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation and the Pacific Decadal Oscillation. While it was determined that no phase of any of the oscillations studied was significantly more dominant over the other(s) concerning frequency, this project does identify some spatial shifts in tornado activity depending …

Determining Heritage Oak Tree Susceptibility To Sudden Oak Death Using Gis Risk Analysis, Michelle M. Guzdek Aug 2010

Determining Heritage Oak Tree Susceptibility To Sudden Oak Death Using Gis Risk Analysis, Michelle M. Guzdek

Geography and the Environment: Graduate Student Capstones

Sudden Oak Death (SOD), caused by the pathogenic water mold Phytophthora ramorum, has killed hundreds of thousands of oak trees in the California coastal regions, with redwood-tanoak forests being hit the hardest (Shoemaker et al., 2007). The term “sudden oak death” is used to describe the disease, because of how rapidly the pathogen has killed otherwise healthy tanoaks, virtually in a matter of weeks (COMTF 2010). SOD was first reported in California in 1994 and is believed to have originated from infected nursery or ornamental plants, but the source has never been identified (Mascheretti et al. 2008).
