Cultural Identity Development And Sensitivity To Minority Cultures, Rachael Sando Sep 2010

Cultural Identity Development And Sensitivity To Minority Cultures, Rachael Sando

Theses

Researchers are working toward understanding how to integrate the growing number of

culturally and ethnically diverse students in college and create a campus climate that is

supportive, united, and diverse. Previous studies have revealed that the dominant culture tends to rate campus climate more positively than minority cultures; a relationship mediated by unawareness of privilege. Research has found that few dominant or majority cultures are self aware of their cultural identity, and therefore do not acknowledge the privilege and culturally transmitted ways of being associated with it. The purpose of this study was to examine the presence of a dominant …

On The Optimal Taxation Of Common-Pool Resources, Georgios Kossioris, Michael Plexousakis, Anastasios Xepapadeas, Aart De Zeeuw

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

Recent research developments in common-pool resource models emphasize the importance of links with ecological systems and the presence of non-linearities, thresholds and multiple steady states. In a recent paper Kossioris et al. (2008) develop a methodology for deriving feedback Nash equilibria for non-linear differential games and apply this methodology to a common-pool resource model of a lake where pollution corresponds to benefits and at the same time affects the ecosystem services. This paper studies the structure of optimal state- dependent taxes that steer the combined economic-ecological system towards the trajectory of optimal management, and provides an algorithm for calculating such …

Risky Activities And Strict Liability Rules: Delegating Safety, Gérard Mondello Sep 2010

Risky Activities And Strict Liability Rules: Delegating Safety, Gérard Mondello

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

This paper studies the delegation of activities that pose serious risks to health and the environment in an economy regulated by strict liability schemes. Strict liability induces judgment-proof possibilities. Two civil liability regimes are then compared: a strict liability scheme and a capped strict liability one. The argument is led under a twofold asymmetric information assumption between the principal and the agent: the efficiency level in effort for safety and the agent’s level of wealth. The paper shows that standard strict liability under information asymmetries deters the efficient agent to compete and favors adverse selection. Then, under conditions, a capped …

Lorentz-Violating Gravitoelectromagnetism, Quentin G. Bailey Sep 2010

Lorentz-Violating Gravitoelectromagnetism, Quentin G. Bailey

Physics & Astronomy - Prescott

The well-known analogy between a special limit of general relativity and electromagnetism is explored in the context of the Lorentz-violating standard-model extension. An analogy is developed for the minimal standard-model extension that connects a limit of the CPT-even component of the electromagnetic sector to the gravitational sector. We show that components of the post-Newtonian metric can be directly obtained from solutions to the electromagnetic sector. The method is illustrated with specific examples including static and rotating sources. Some unconventional effects that arise for Lorentz-violating electrostatics and magnetostatics have an analog in Lorentz-violating post-Newtonian gravity. In particular, we show that even …

Guided Notes In The Pre-Algebra Mathematics Classroom, Lynn C. Morris

Theses and Graduate Projects

Students who attend an 8th grade mathematics class in the middle school at my district and who are not placed in an accelerated class, are placed in Book 3 of MathThematics (Billstein & Williamson, 2002, p. 393-466). I have introduced guided notes for the pre-algebra classroom in an effort to increase 8th graders' classroom participation and engagement and to improve content mastery of Pre-Algebra. This study was an effort to understand if the guided notes increase student's level of Pre-Algebra mastery in my classroom. I wanted to find out if guided notes increased participation and engagement compared to …

The Predictive Relationship Between Temperament, School Adjustment, And Academic Achievement: A 2-Year Longitudinal Study Of Children At-Risk, Maha Al-Hendawi Sep 2010

The Predictive Relationship Between Temperament, School Adjustment, And Academic Achievement: A 2-Year Longitudinal Study Of Children At-Risk, Maha Al-Hendawi

Theses and Dissertations

Individual differences in temperament can be a risk or a protective factor for a child, especially for children at-risk who possess single or multiple risk factors that may interfere with their educational success and affect their healthy development and their life-long outcomes. This research study examined the concurrent and longitudinal relationships between temperament, school adjustment, and academic achievement in children at-risk. Seventy-seven children, ages five to 11 years, were reassessed two years after an initial study. Their teachers completed the Temperament Assessment Battery for Children (TABC), the Behavior Assessment System for Children (BASC), and reported on the children's academic achievement. …

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

This paper discusses the synthesis of bio-, magneto-, and isotope stratigraphies in the shallow-water sediment sequences drilled on guyots in the western Pacific Ocean during Leg 144. Material previously dredged from the slopes of a few guyots and the Cretaceous section recovered at Site 869 are also considered. The integrated stratigraphy along with radiometric ages resulted in the reconstruction of the geological events that produced atolls and guyots.

Information Systems and Engineering Management Research Publications

We report the detection of a giant planet in a 6.4950 day orbit around the 1.68 M☉ subgiant HD 102956. The planet has a semimajor axis a = 0.081 AU and a minimum mass MPsin i =0.96 MJup. HD 102956 is the most massive star known to harbor a hot Jupiter, and its planet is only the third known to orbit within 0.6 AU of a star more massive than 1.5 M☉. Based on our sample of 137 subgiants with M⋆>1.45 M☉, we find that 0.5%–2.3% of A-type stars harbor a close-in planet (a < 0.1 AU) with MPsin i > 1 MJup, consistent with hot-Jupiter …

We present precise Doppler measurements of four stars obtained during the past decade at Keck Observatory by the California Planet Survey (CPS). These stars, namely, HD 34445, HD 126614, HD 13931, and Gl 179, all show evidence for a single planet in Keplerian motion. We also present Doppler measurements from the Hobby-Eberly Telescope (HET) for two of the stars, HD 34445 and Gl 179, that confirm the Keck detections and significantly refine the orbital parameters. These planets add to the statistical properties of giant planets orbiting near or beyond the ice line, and merit follow-up by astrometry, imaging, and space-borne …

Socioemotional Development And Nonverbal Learning Disabilities : A Theoretical Intersection Of Neurobiology And Self Psychology : A Project Based Upon An Independent Investigation, Joanna M. Lightburn Sep 2010

Socioemotional Development And Nonverbal Learning Disabilities : A Theoretical Intersection Of Neurobiology And Self Psychology : A Project Based Upon An Independent Investigation, Joanna M. Lightburn

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

The purpose of this theoretical investigation is to explore how Nonverbal Learning Disabilities (NLD) influences a child's social and emotional development by examining the potential interrelationship between the literature on neurobiology related to NLD and literature on normative psychosocial development. NLD, a lesser-known learning disability subtype, can impact an individual's capacity to process and remember visual-spatial information. Individuals with NLD have difficulty with social interactions, as they cannot recognize or accurately decode another's nonverbal cues, such as facial expressions, gestures, body language and tone of voice. Due to repeated rejection from others in response to their social perception deficits, individuals …

Synesthesia : A Sixth Sense Or A Sensation : A Research Project Based Upon Interviewing Persons With Color Synesthesia, Lynn Kaye Goode Sep 2010

Synesthesia : A Sixth Sense Or A Sensation : A Research Project Based Upon Interviewing Persons With Color Synesthesia, Lynn Kaye Goode

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

Synesthesia is a peculiar neurological phenomenon that occurs when two senses combine. For example, seeing the colors of words, letters, and music or feeling the shapes of tastes and smells are types of synesthesia. Persons who experience these sensations are called "synesthetes." I am one of a small percentage of the population who "see" language in color. Although writers, poets, and artists have historically intertwined color and language in a metaphoric way, letters and words literally appear in my mind in a color-coded sequence. While synesthesia is an involuntary, sometimes disruptive process for those who experience it, most synethetes cannot …

Practice Wisdom : An Exploration Of School Social Workers Experience With Social And Emotional Learning Curricula : A Project Based Upon An Independent Investigation, Gordon David Gross Sep 2010

Practice Wisdom : An Exploration Of School Social Workers Experience With Social And Emotional Learning Curricula : A Project Based Upon An Independent Investigation, Gordon David Gross

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

Of all of the professions that exist in a school setting, social workers are trained specifically in the three main theoretical tenets of social and emotional learning programs: systems theory, cognitive behavioral theory and psychoanalytic theory. Yet there is little in the literature about what the role of social work should be as a stakeholder in implementing a SEL curriculum. This qualitative research was designed to investigate what could be learned from the practice wisdom of school social workers in elementary schools that have adopted a SEL curriculum about their experiences and the roles they have adopted. This study employed …

Application Of Convex Methods To Identification Of Fuzzy Subpopulations, Ryan Lee Eliason Sep 2010

Application Of Convex Methods To Identification Of Fuzzy Subpopulations, Ryan Lee Eliason

Theses and Dissertations

In large observational studies, data are often highly multivariate with many discrete and continuous variables measured on each observational unit. One often derives subpopulations to facilitate analysis. Traditional approaches suggest modeling such subpopulations with a compilation of interaction effects. However, when many interaction effects define each subpopulation, it becomes easier to model membership in a subpopulation rather than numerous interactions. In many cases, subjects are not complete members of a subpopulation but rather partial members of multiple subpopulations. Grade of Membership scores preserve the integrity of this partial membership. By generalizing an analytic chemistry concept related to chromatography-mass spectrometry, we …

Veritas Search For Vhe Gamma-Ray Emission From Dwarf Spheroidal Galaxies, P. T. Reynolds, Et. Al.

Physical Sciences Publications

Indirect dark matter searches with ground-based gamma-ray observatories provide an alternative for identifying the particle nature of dark matter that is complementary to that of direct search or accelerator production experiments. We present the results of observations of the dwarf spheroidal galaxies Draco, Ursa Minor, Boötes 1, and Willman 1 conducted by the Very Energetic Radiation Imaging Telescope Array System (VERITAS). These galaxies are nearby dark matter dominated objects located at a typical distance of several tens of kiloparsecs for which there are good measurements of the dark matter density profile from stellar velocity measurements. Since the conventional astrophysical background …

Reputation-Based Internet Protocol Security: A Multilayer Security Framework For Mobil Ad Hoc Networks, Timothy H. Lacey Sep 2010

Reputation-Based Internet Protocol Security: A Multilayer Security Framework For Mobil Ad Hoc Networks, Timothy H. Lacey

Theses and Dissertations

This research effort examines the theory, application, and results for a Reputation-based Internet Protocol Security (RIPSec) framework that provides security for an ad-hoc network operating in a hostile environment. In RIPSec, protection from external threats is provided in the form of encrypted communication links and encryption-wrapped nodes while internal threats are mitigated by behavior grading that assigns reputations to nodes based on their demonstrated participation in the routing process. Network availability is provided by behavior grading and round-robin multipath routing. If a node behaves faithfully, it earns a positive reputation over time. If a node misbehaves (for any number of …
