Effect Of Plant Uptake Strategy On The Water-Optimal Root Depth, Andrew J. Guswa Sep 2010

Effect Of Plant Uptake Strategy On The Water-Optimal Root Depth, Andrew J. Guswa

Engineering: Faculty Publications

The depth of plant roots depends on a variety of conditions, including soil properties, vegetation type, nutrient availability, and climate. A water-optimal root depth is determined by equating the marginal carbon cost of deeper roots with the benefit of those roots to continued transpiration. This work compares the effect of two bounding strategies of plant uptake, conservative and intensive, on the water-optimal root depth and the response of that depth to changes in precipitation. While there are some differences between the models, both indicate similar responses of root depth to climate. The deepest roots are found in climates for which …

Evaluation Of Targeted Influenza Vaccination Strategies Via Population Modeling., John Glasser, Denis Taneri, Zhilan Julie Feng, Jen-Hsiang Chuang, Peet Tüll, William Thompson, Mary Mccauley, James Alexander

Department of Mathematics Faculty Publications

Background

Because they can generate comparable predictions, mathematical models are ideal tools for evaluating alternative drug or vaccine allocation strategies. To remain credible, however, results must be consistent. Authors of a recent assessment of possible influenza vaccination strategies conclude that older children, adolescents, and young adults are the optimal targets, no matter the objective, and argue for vaccinating them. Authors of two earlier studies concluded, respectively, that optimal targets depend on objectives and cautioned against changing policy. Which should we believe?

Methods and Findings

In matrices whose elements are contacts between persons by age, the main diagonal always predominates, reflecting …

The State Of Latinos And Education In Massachusetts: 2010, Billie Gastic, Melissa Colón, Andrew Flannery Aguilar

Gastón Institute Publications

Schools are critical public institutions for Latino youth in the Commonwealth, who make up 15% of the public school enrollment in the state. Sadly, despite leading the nation in student achievement, Massachusetts is still leaving its Latino students behind. This is evident from several indicators of Latino students’ academic success. School attendance is a significant concern since Latino students lose an average of more than two and a half weeks of school each year due to absences. Latino students are also frequently disciplined for behavioral is- sues at school. Latinos account for 23% of the incidents that result in disciplinary …

Deformation Waves In Microstructured Materials: Theory And Numerics, Juri Engelbrecht, Arkadi Berezovski, Mihhail Berezovski Sep 2010

Deformation Waves In Microstructured Materials: Theory And Numerics, Juri Engelbrecht, Arkadi Berezovski, Mihhail Berezovski

Publications

A linear model of the microstructured continuum based on Mindlin theory is adopted which can be represented in the framework of the internal variable theory. Fully coupled systems of equations for macro-motion and microstructure evolution are represented in the form of conservation laws. A modification of wave propagation algorithm is used for numerical calculations. Results of direct numerical simulations of wave propagation in periodic medium are compared with similar results for the continuous media with the modelled microstructure. It is shown that the proper choice of material constants should be made to match the results obtained by both approaches

Rural Community Characteristics, Economic Hardship, And Peer And Parental Influences In Early Adolescent Alcohol Use, Laura De Haan, Tina Boljevac, Kurt Schaefer Sep 2010

Rural Community Characteristics, Economic Hardship, And Peer And Parental Influences In Early Adolescent Alcohol Use, Laura De Haan, Tina Boljevac, Kurt Schaefer

University Faculty Publications and Creative Works

The study explores how differences in rural community contexts relate to early adolescent alcohol use. Data were gathered from 1,424 adolescents in the sixth through eighth grades in 22 rural Northern Plains communities, as well as 790 adults, parents, teachers, and community leaders. Multilevel modeling analyses revealed that community supportiveness, as perceived by adolescents, but not adults, was associated with less lifetime and past month alcohol use, and for past month use, this relationship was stronger than perceived peer drinking or parental closeness. Perceived peer drinking and parental closeness were not associated with past month use. Adolescents experiencing family economic …

Vector Measures Without Weak Compactness, Iwo Labuda Sep 2010

Vector Measures Without Weak Compactness, Iwo Labuda

Analysis Seminar

The title above refers to a 1955 paper of Bartle, Dunford, and Schwartz 'Weak Compactness and Vector Measures' in which integration of scalar functions with respect to a vector measure was first defined. Vector measures considered in the original paper were Banach space valued and the notion of weak compactness played the key role in the development of the theory. 55 years later, I am happy to report that the theory can be developed without any constraints on the range space (and so the notion of weak topology is not even available, in general). Let be a σ-algebra of …

A Java Prototype Implementation Of Coordination For Heterogeneous, Distributed, And Parallel Programming, Hao Wu Sep 2010

A Java Prototype Implementation Of Coordination For Heterogeneous, Distributed, And Parallel Programming, Hao Wu

Theses and Dissertations

Heterogeneous distributed parallel programming skills are in rapidly rising demand for developing applications in emerging fields such as MRI spin relaxometry, gene sequence analysis, climate modeling, and molecular modeling of potential bioactive compounds that require massive amounts of computation. However, heterogeneous distributed and parallel programming is not a trivial task for programmers. Programmers are overwhelmed to program at a low level with specific target machines or are faced with unfamiliar programming models. In this thesis, we introduce a framework to support heterogeneous distributed programming in a sequential programming language Java for parallelism. The framework has four layers (application layer, coordination …

Characterization Of Atmospheric Aerosols By Using Infrared Spectroscopy, Kristy Lynn Kelley Sep 2010

Characterization Of Atmospheric Aerosols By Using Infrared Spectroscopy, Kristy Lynn Kelley

Theses and Dissertations

Although aerosol radiative effects have been known for sometime and are considered one of the major uncertainties in climate change modeling, most of the studies have focused on the forcing due to scattering and absorption of radiation in the uv-visible region.1 Infrared spectral information allows the confirmation of key functional groups that are responsible for enhanced absorption observations from secondary organics in the uv-visible region. This work evaluates the infrared absorption by aerosols, particularly organics that are now found to be a major fraction of urban and regional aerosols in the 0.1 to 1.0 micron size range and to help …

Net Impact Evaluation Of Moving Men And Women To Economic Independence In Michigan, Within Reach Program: Year 1 And Year 2 Cohorts, Randall W. Eberts, Jason M. Preuss

Presentations

The authors completed a net impact evaluation of the “Within Reach” component of the Goodwill Industries of Greater Detroit program (Moving Men and Women to Economic Independence). This program provided employment-related support services to disadvantaged adults as coordinated by WorkFirst. The net impact evaluation estimated the contribution of the program to the employment outcomes of the participants. It constructed comparison groups of individuals who were similar to the program participants, but who did not participate in the program. The net impact analysis focused on three employment-related outcomes: finding a job, retaining a job (workforce attachment), and earnings.

Hochschild Cohomology Of Group Extensions Of Quantum Symmetric Algebras, Deepak Naidu, Piyush Shroff, Sarah Witherspoon Sep 2010

Hochschild Cohomology Of Group Extensions Of Quantum Symmetric Algebras, Deepak Naidu, Piyush Shroff, Sarah Witherspoon

Faculty Articles, Papers, and Other Scholarship

Quantum symmetric algebras (or noncommutative polynomial rings) arise in many places in mathematics. In this article we find the multiplicative structure of their Hochschild cohomology when the coefficients are in an arbitrary bimodule algebra. When this bimodule algebra is a finite group extension (under a diagonal action) of a quantum symmetric algebra, we give explicitly the graded vector space structure. This yields a complete description of the Hochschild cohomology ring of the corresponding skew group algebra.

This analysis estimated the net impact of Reading Recovery® as it was conducted in Kalamazoo Public Schools for first graders in the 2003/04 cohort. Results suggest that Reading Recovery® has helped students who demonstrated difficulties with literacy skills at the beginning of the year to perform at levels much closer to their peers by the end of the year. Three comparison groups were used in the analysis: RR students only, all other first graders, and matched first graders. Analysis using all three comparison groups found evidence that students in Reading Recovery® raised their test scores more than students that were …

Assessing The Sensitivity Of Water To Surface, Soil, Rock, And Cave Conditions In Fitton Cave, Northern Arkansas, Drew Aaron Westerman Sep 2010

Assessing The Sensitivity Of Water To Surface, Soil, Rock, And Cave Conditions In Fitton Cave, Northern Arkansas, Drew Aaron Westerman

Theses and Dissertations

Fitton Cave, located within the Buffalo National River in north-central Arkansas, offers a window into a relatively pristine portion of the Ozark Plateaus Aquifer. This region is one of the largest karst aquifers in the United States, providing more than 1.8 million people with drinking water. Understanding what happens to water as it moves from the surface to subsurface is requisite for utilization, management, and sustainability of karst aquifers as water resources. As population pressures increase, assessment of geochemical and hydrologic processes from pristine systems such as Fitton Cave will prove invaluable for providing baseline conditions. By integrating vascular plant …

Design, Synthesis, And Characterization Of A Tetraamide Macrocyclic Ligand And Its Fe- Complex For Green Oxidation Chemistry, Shane Z. Sullivan Sep 2010

Design, Synthesis, And Characterization Of A Tetraamide Macrocyclic Ligand And Its Fe- Complex For Green Oxidation Chemistry, Shane Z. Sullivan

Theses and Dissertations

This work presents the spectroscopic characterization and catalytic investigation of a FeIII-complex of a tetraamidomacrocyclic ligand. Under catalytic conditions the complex is soluble in aqueous solutions and rapidly activates hydrogen peroxide under mild reaction conditions. Both the kinetics and extent of water-soluble dye and paper effluent H2O2-bleaching catalyzed was found to be comparable to known FeIII-TAML complexes. As an additional application, the complex showed potential for the synthesis of a variety of Noxides from their corresponding amines as demonstrated by its high turnover number and essentially stoichiometric yield in selected amines. Electrospray ionization-mass spectrometry of the complex reveals a peak …

Discovering How To Teach Writing As A Process, Michael Patrick Daly Sep 2010

Discovering How To Teach Writing As A Process, Michael Patrick Daly

Theses and Dissertations

Novice teachers often struggle with how to teach writing, especially when few teacher-preparation programs offer guidance in developing and implementing theory-based writing instruction. This thesis explores a teacher's journey to discover just what it means to teach writing as a process after one year of teaching and beginning graduate study in professional and technical writing. Part of that journey explores how Walter Ong's concept of secondary orality helps developing writers learn to how to compose analytical essays for the Advanced Placement English Literature and Composition exam.

Two-Loop Soft Anomalous Dimensions For Single Top Quark Associated Production With A W- Or H-, Nikolaos Kidonakis Sep 2010

Two-Loop Soft Anomalous Dimensions For Single Top Quark Associated Production With A W- Or H-, Nikolaos Kidonakis

Faculty Articles

I present results for the two-loop soft anomalous dimensions for associated production of a single top quark with a W boson or a charged Higgs boson. The calculation uses expressions for the massive cusp anomalous dimension, which are presented in different forms, and it allows soft-gluon resummation at next-to-next-to-leading-logarithm (NNLL) accuracy. From the NNLL resummed cross section I derive approximate NNLO cross sections for bg→tW- and bg→tH- at LHC energies of 7, 10, and 14 TeV.
