Identifying The Quantum Correlations In Light-Harvesting Complexes, Kamil Brádler, Mark M. Wilde, Sai Vinjanampathy, Dmitry B. Uskov

Faculty Publications

One of the major efforts in the quantum biological program is to subject biological systems to standard tests or measures of quantumness. These tests and measures should elucidate whether nontrivial quantum effects may be present in biological systems. Two such measures of quantum correlations are the quantum discord and the relative entropy of entanglement. Here, we show that the relative entropy of entanglement admits a simple analytic form when dynamics and accessible degrees of freedom are restricted to a zero- and single-excitation subspace. We also simulate and calculate the amount of quantum discord that is present in the Fenna-Matthews-Olson protein …

The Roles Of Elevated Bcl-2 In Ovarian Cancer, Nicole Shree Anderson Dec 2010

The Roles Of Elevated Bcl-2 In Ovarian Cancer, Nicole Shree Anderson

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Ovarian cancer (OC) is the second most common gynecologic cancer; however it is responsible for the most gynecologic cancer-related deaths. Apoptosis evasion is an important mechanism in OC tumorigenesis, and the prototypic anti-apoptotic protein, B-cell lymphoma 2 (Bcl-2), is often overexpressed in OC tumors. Gaining a better understanding of the mechanism(s) behind Bcl-2 overexpression and potential extra-anti-apoptotic functions of Bcl-2 could elucidate the importance of elevated Bcl-2 in OC. In the current study, I show through immunohistochemical analysis of normal, benign, and OC tissue sections, that both epithelial and stromal Bcl-2 expression decreases with OC progression. However, the number of …

Web-Based Ide To Create Model And Controller Components For Mvc-Based Web Applications On Cakephp, Sugiharto Widjaja

Master's Projects

A Web-based IDE that allows users to easily manage Model and Controller components of a CakePHP web application was developed. With this IDE, users are able to manage the model and controller components without having to write very much PHP code. They are able to create new model components without having to worry about creating the database tables for the models as the IDE creates them automatically. The IDE offers a simple interface for users to edit the schema of their models. Users can add or delete data from their models without dealing with the SQL insert/delete statements. The IDE …

Dihomotopic Deadlock Detection Via Progress Shell Decomposition, David A. Cape, Stephen C. Jackson, Bruce M. Mcmillin Dec 2010

Dihomotopic Deadlock Detection Via Progress Shell Decomposition, David A. Cape, Stephen C. Jackson, Bruce M. Mcmillin

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

The classical problem of deadlock detection for concurrent programs has traditionally been accomplished by symbolic methods or by search of a state transition system. This work examines an approach that uses geometric semantics involving the topological notion of dihomotopy to partition the state space into components, followed by search of a reduced state space. Prior work partitioned the state-space inductively. in this work, a decomposition technique motivated by recursion coupled with a search guided by the decomposition is shown to effectively reduce the size of state transition systems. the reduced state space yields asymptotic improvement in overall runtime for verification. …

Sources Of The Radio Background Considered, Jack Singal, L. Stawarz, A. Lawrence, V. Petrosian Dec 2010

Sources Of The Radio Background Considered, Jack Singal, L. Stawarz, A. Lawrence, V. Petrosian

Physics Faculty Publications

We investigate different scenarios for the origin of the extragalactic radio background. The surface brightness of the background, as reported by the Absolute Radiometer for Cosmology, Astrophysics, and Diffuse Emission 2 (ARCADE 2) collaboration, is several times higher than that which would result from currently observed radio sources. We consider contributions to the background from diffuse synchrotron emission from clusters and the intergalactic medium, previously unrecognized flux from low-surface-brightness regions of radio sources and faint point sources below the flux limit of existing surveys. By examining radio source counts available in the literature, we conclude that most of the radio …

Information Systems and Engineering Management Research Publications

We report radial velocity (RV) measurements of the G-type subgiants 24 Sextanis (= HD 90043) and HD 200964. Both are massive, evolved stars that exhibit periodic variations due to the presence of a pair of Jovian planets. Photometric monitoring with the T12 0.80 m APT at Fairborn Observatory demonstrates both stars to be constant in brightness to ⩽0.002 mag, thus strengthening the planetary interpretation of the RV variations. Based on our dynamical analysis of the RV time series, 24 Sex b, c have orbital periods of 452.8 days and 883.0 days, corresponding to semimajor axes 1.333 AU and 2.08 AU, …

Money Matters: The Influence Of Financial Factors On Graduate Student Persistence, Terrell L. Strayhorn Dec 2010

Money Matters: The Influence Of Financial Factors On Graduate Student Persistence, Terrell L. Strayhorn

Journal of Student Financial Aid

National statistics indicate that approximately 50 percent of all graduate students fail to complete their degree; thus, understanding the factors that influence their persistence is an important research objective. Using data from a nationally representative sample of bachelor's degree recipients, the study aimed to answer three questions: What proportion of 1992-1993 bachelor's degree recipients enrolled in graduate school by 2003? Of those, what proportion persisted in graduate school? Controlling for background and academic differences, what effect do financial factors have on persistence in graduate school? Descriptive and hierarchal binomial logistic regression results suest that 36 percent of bachelor's degree recipients …

Evolution Of The Protein-Coding Genes In The Genomes Of The Mycoplasmatales, Dipaloke Mukherjee Dec 2010

Evolution Of The Protein-Coding Genes In The Genomes Of The Mycoplasmatales, Dipaloke Mukherjee

Theses and Dissertations

The bacterial species belonging to the order Mycoplasmatales have highly truncated genomes, and are thus ideal for studying genome evolution patterns. Fourteen members (twelve species) of this order were selected for study of genome evolution based on gene function and phylogeny. A database was constructed that consisting of the set of genes that are common to all of these species, and these genes were further subdivided based on their functions. A Bayesian phylogenetic tree was also constructed from the 16 S ribosomal DNA sequences from these species and robust clades were identified for testing the influence of selection on gene …

Mono-Dispersed Droplet Delivery In A Refrigerated Wind Tunnel, Kyle Hutchings Dec 2010

Mono-Dispersed Droplet Delivery In A Refrigerated Wind Tunnel, Kyle Hutchings

Theses and Dissertations

An aircraft may experience inlight ice accretion and corresponding reductions in performance and control when the vehicle encounters clouds of super-cooled water droplets. In order to study anti-icing coatings, the EADS-IW Surface Engineering Group is building a refrigerated wind tunnel. Several variations of droplet delivery systems were explored to determine the most effective way to introduce mono-dispersed droplets into the wind tunnel. To investigate this flow, timeurate, unsteady viscous flow simulations were performed using the Loci/CHEM flow solver with a multi-scale hybrid RANS/LES turbulence model. A Lagrangian droplet model was employed to simulate the movement of water droplets in the …
