Evolution Of The American Dream, Zi-Ning Choo '13 Oct 2010

Evolution Of The American Dream, Zi-Ning Choo '13

2010 Fall Semester

Achievement of the American Dream is and has always been a hope of many Americans. Like many other aspirations, however, the American Dream itself is continuously evolving. The promises of the modern American Dream differ considerably from the possibilities voiced by early Americans. As described by Crevecoeur and Franklin, the original American Dream is the potential of economic success regardless of birth or class. However, David Kamp, Bharati Mukherjee, Jonathan Kozol, Malcolm Gladwell, and Bill McKibben present a less-idealistic modern American Dream. In comparison to the modest, attainable, and satisfying original, the modern American Dream is more extravagant, less accessible by …

Bravery, Honor, And Loyalty As Morals In Beowulf, Eleanor Cory '12 Oct 2010

Bravery, Honor, And Loyalty As Morals In Beowulf, Eleanor Cory '12

2010 Fall Semester

Since it originated in oral tradition, the epic Beowulf has no known author. It does, however, serve as a representation of the Anglo-Saxon culture it originates from. As a work of art, it also serves its purpose of moral instruction, today serving as a demonstration of what values were important to the Anglo-Saxon people. Especially seen through the characters of Beowulf and Wiglaf, the poem Beowulf illustrates three important morals of its time: bravery, honor, and loyalty.

Land Of Opportunity, Ashley Radee '13 Oct 2010

Land Of Opportunity, Ashley Radee '13

2010 Fall Semester

“We are the most perfect society now existing in the world,” wrote Michel-Guillame de Crevecoeur in his 1782 book, Letters from an American Farmer (325). Although that sentiment is debatable, the meaning rings clear; America is a land of opportunity, without oppression, without “princes for whom we toil, starve, and bleed” (Crevecoeur 325). Back in the 18th century, America lived and died for freedom, and people around the world took notice. The United States still plays a big role in the global power scene, but some people would argue that the ideals of America, of liberty, hard work, and prosperity, …

Crevecoeur’S American Contract, Jason Lin '13 Oct 2010

Crevecoeur’S American Contract, Jason Lin '13

2010 Fall Semester

“There was a joke when I was coming to America. For every three Taiwanese that will go to America for an education: Two will get a PhD and one will open a Chinese restaurant. After a while, one of the PhD’s will open a Chinese restaurant also” (Lin). This joke originated from the high population of Taiwanese people that immigrated to America. They had even come up with a formula to achieve the American dream. It consisted of coming to America, working hard, and receiving the benefits. Crevecoeur wrote about the same formula in his essay What is an American? …

Art: A Handbook For Morality, Wendy Bindeman '12 Oct 2010

Art: A Handbook For Morality, Wendy Bindeman '12

2010 Fall Semester

Morals begin with parental instructions and pure bribery, such as promising playtime if children follow instructions and putting them in time-out if they act out inappropriately. However, over time, this outwardly enforced moral code must become internalized for a person to truly be ethical. Internalization happens when a person develops a sense of boundaries and behavior to live by without prompting. This process of creating standards draws on one’s experiences and knowledge of how the world views and responds to certain actions. The moral lessons present in art, which everyone is exposed to beginning at a very young age, help …

An Improved Layer-By-Layer Self-Assembly Technique To Generate Biointerfaces For Platelet Adhesion Studies: Dynamic Lbl, Juan Manuel Lopez Oct 2010

An Improved Layer-By-Layer Self-Assembly Technique To Generate Biointerfaces For Platelet Adhesion Studies: Dynamic Lbl, Juan Manuel Lopez

Doctoral Dissertations

Layer-by-layer self-assembly (LbL) is a technique that generates engineered nano-scale films, coatings, and particles. These nanoscale films have recently been used in multiple biomedical applications. Concurrently, microfabrication methods and advances in microfluidics are being developed and combined to create "Lab-on-a-Chip" technologies. The potential to perform complex biological assays in vitro as a first-line screening technique before moving on to animal models has made the concept of lab on a chip a valuable research tool.

Prior studies in the Biofluids Laboratory at Louisiana Tech have used layer-by-layer and in vitro biological assays to study thrombogenesis in a controlled, repeatable, engineered environment. …

Benefits, Limitations And Best Practices Of Online Coursework…Should Accounting Programs Jump On Board?, Mary Kay Copeland

Business Faculty/Staff Publications

The evolution of online teaching has evolved as quickly and vivaciously as the adoption of the World Wide Web. While there were and are skeptics, research shows that not only is online learning more convenient and makes educational available anytime and anywhere, it has the potential, in some cases, to be an improved tool for educating. To ensure maximized learning outcomes, and to experience the blessing and not the curse of online coursework, it is critical that universities embrace it wholeheartedly and follow online pedagogical best practices in developing and executing online courses. In addition, there are some courses where …

AQ-Pal14 is a 30-residue polypeptide that was designed to form an alpha-helical coiled coil that contains a metal-binding 4-pyridylalanine residue on its solvent-exposed surface. However, characterization of this peptide shows that it exists as a three-stranded coiled coil, not a two-stranded one as predicted from its design. Reaction with cobalt(III) protoporphyrin IX (Co-PPIX) produces a six-coordinate Co-PPIX(AQ-Pal 14)(2) species that creates two coiled-coil oligomerization domains Coordinated to opposite laces of the porphyrin ring. It is found that this species undergoes a buffer-dependent Self-assembly process: nanometer-scale globular materials were formed when these components were reacted in unbuffered H(2)O, while millimeter-scale, rod-like …

We consider a stochastic optimal control problem in the whole space, where the corresponding HJB equation is degenerate, with a quadratic running cost and coeffcients with linear growth. In this paper we provide a full mathematical details on the key estimate relating the asymptotic behavior of the solution as the space variable goes to infinite.

Cox-2 Inhibitor Nimesulide Analogs Are Aromatase Suppressors In Breast Cancer Cells, Bin Su, Xiaohan Cai, Yanyan Hong, Shiuan Chen Oct 2010

Cox-2 Inhibitor Nimesulide Analogs Are Aromatase Suppressors In Breast Cancer Cells, Bin Su, Xiaohan Cai, Yanyan Hong, Shiuan Chen

Chemistry Faculty Publications

Cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) inhibitor nimesulide derivatives compounds A and B decreased aromatase activity in breast cancer cells via a novel mechanism different to aromatase inhibitors (AIs), and were defined as “aromatase suppressors”. Breast carcinoma cells (MCF-7aro and T47Daro) transfected with aromatase full gene were used to explore the mechanisms of the two compounds. They dose and time-dependently suppressed aromatase activity in MCF-7aro and T47Daro cells in the nanomole range. However, they neither directly inhibited aromatase, nor improved aromatase degradation even at much higher concentrations. They could also suppress androgen stimulated cell growth, but did not affect estrogen enhanced cell proliferation. These …

Neural Network Burst Pressure Prediction In Composite Overwrapped Pressure Vessels Using Mathematically Modeled Acoustic Emission Data, Junya Iizuka Oct 2010

Neural Network Burst Pressure Prediction In Composite Overwrapped Pressure Vessels Using Mathematically Modeled Acoustic Emission Data, Junya Iizuka

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

The purpose of this research was to predict burst pressures in composite overwrapped pressure vessels (COPV) using mathematically modeled acoustic emission (AE) data. The AE data were collected during hydrostatic burst (hydroburst) testing often 15-inch (380 mm) diameter COP Vs. The data gathered during these tests were filtered in order to remove long duration hits, multiple hit data, and obvious outliers. Based on the duration, energy, and amplitude of the AE hits, the filtered data were classified into the various failure mechanisms of composites using a MATLAB based self-organizing map (SOM) neural network. Previous research has demonstrated that the parameters …

Investigation Of Scaling Effects For A Synthetic Jet Actuator Using High And Low Fidelity Analyses, Amandine Bourlier Oct 2010

Investigation Of Scaling Effects For A Synthetic Jet Actuator Using High And Low Fidelity Analyses, Amandine Bourlier

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

This research presents an investigation on the scaling effects for synthetic jet actuators using Ansys-CFX and a Lumped Element Model (LEM). Synthetic jets or zero net mass-flux devices use a vibrating diaphragm to generate an oscillatory flow through a small orifice. A synthetic jet actuator can be used on MAVs as thrust generator or fixed on an airfoil for flow separation control. A Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) model was created, using Ansys-CFX, to be validated against referred publications. The use of mesh adaption is discussed. This baseline model was then used to complete a scaling analysis using a set of …

Modeling And Simulation On Signatures Of Mars Minerals, Widad Elmahboub, Edward Yankey, Olivia Kerwin Oct 2010

Modeling And Simulation On Signatures Of Mars Minerals, Widad Elmahboub, Edward Yankey, Olivia Kerwin

Virginia Journal of Science

The objective of this study was to assess the feasibility of identifying minerals on Mars using remotely sensed data. In the process we also investigated the effect of noise of Aerosol and dust particles on the spectra of Mars minerals. The remotely sensed data was obtained through modeling and simulation and compared to the lab spectroscopy of the specific minerals in order to make an accurate identification. A linear model was developed using MATLAB Random Number Generator to obtain a simulated image. Part of the information we needed for the linear model was pure pixel information of Mars which was …

Continued Cooling Of The Crust In The Neutron Star Low-Mass X-Ray Binary Ks 1731-260, Edward M. Cackett, Edward F. Brown, Andrew Cumming, Nathalie Degenaar, Jon M. Miller, Rudy Wijnands Oct 2010

Continued Cooling Of The Crust In The Neutron Star Low-Mass X-Ray Binary Ks 1731-260, Edward M. Cackett, Edward F. Brown, Andrew Cumming, Nathalie Degenaar, Jon M. Miller, Rudy Wijnands

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Research Publications

Some neutron star low-mass X-ray binaries have very long outbursts (lasting several years) which can generate a significant amount of heat in the neutron star crust. After the system has returned to quiescence, the crust then thermally relaxes. This provides a rare opportunity to study the thermal properties of neutron star crusts, putting constraints on the thermal conductivity and hence the structure and composition of the crust. KS 1731-260 is one of only four systems where this crustal cooling has been observed. Here, we present a new Chandra observation of this source approximately eight years after the end of the …

Student And Teacher Perspectives Of Technology Usage, Lori L. Elliott Oct 2010

Student And Teacher Perspectives Of Technology Usage, Lori L. Elliott

Dissertations

This study examined the use of technology by eighth grade students and teachers and perceptions of students and teachers toward technology use in the classroom and home. A mixed design method was selected to collect and analyze the data. Face-to-face interviews, field notes, and national survey results were used to triangulate the data. Three themes emerged from the study in response to the research questions: communication is the focus of technology use, students consider themselves more knowledgeable about technology than teachers, and technology use in the classroom is primarily a visual tool, rather than an interactive resource. Implications for educators …
