New Precision Orbits Of Bright Double-Lined Spectroscopic Binaries. V. The Am Stars Hd 434 And 41 Sextantis, Francis C. Fekel, Michael H. Williamson Oct 2010

New Precision Orbits Of Bright Double-Lined Spectroscopic Binaries. V. The Am Stars Hd 434 And 41 Sextantis, Francis C. Fekel, Michael H. Williamson

Information Systems and Engineering Management Research Publications

We have detected the secondary component in two previously known spectroscopic binaries, HD 434 and 41 Sex, and for the first time determined double-lined orbits for them. Despite the relatively long period of 34.26 days and a moderate eccentricity of 0.32, combined with the components' rotationally broadened lines, measurement of the primary and secondary radial velocities of HD 434 has enabled us to obtain significantly improved orbital elements. While the 41 Sex system has a much shorter period of 6.167 days and a circular orbit, the estimated V mag difference of 3.2 between its components also makes this a challenging …

A Data Warehouse Solution Emphasizing The Use In Geographic Information Systems, Catherine Carpenter Oct 2010

A Data Warehouse Solution Emphasizing The Use In Geographic Information Systems, Catherine Carpenter

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

This paper will explore use of a data warehouse solution for an electric utility that generates and transmits power across four US states. The pseudonym "Utility" will be used to represent the electric utility for security reasons. At Utility "X" several systems store information that is managed in silos that, in some cases, operate on proprietary database formats. This type of usage is identified as a barrier in the development of an enterprise-wide data source. A data warehouse can ultimately help to bridge the Utility "X" information gap, and provide added accessibility for the company to further develop technology, such …

Developing Soil Erosion Indices In Nepal Using Distributed Modeling, Keshav Bhattarai Oct 2010

Developing Soil Erosion Indices In Nepal Using Distributed Modeling, Keshav Bhattarai

Himalayan Policy Research Conference

This research is an attempt to develop soil erosion index maps of Nepal by integrating biophysical and socioeconomic-demographic information. Areas exhibiting high erosion caused by biophysical and socioeconomic-demographic factors are identified for all the three ecological regions of Nepal – mountains, mid hills, and Tarai – covering 147,181 square kilometers. The terrain attributes derived from 30 x 30 m2, 60 x 60 m2 and 90 x 90 m2 grids resolutions are used to compare soil erodibility in different places. A soil erosion index map helps to differentiate productive areas from non-productive ones, and such a map becomes instrumental to examine …

Economic Growth And Human Development In South Asia: Experiences Of Selected Countries, Ranjit Singh Ghuman, Amarjit S. Bhullar Oct 2010

Economic Growth And Human Development In South Asia: Experiences Of Selected Countries, Ranjit Singh Ghuman, Amarjit S. Bhullar

Himalayan Policy Research Conference

The very quality and sustainability of growth, eventually, depends on the human development and vice-versa. There is, no doubt, that the causal relationship between growth and human development needs to be viewed in this spectrum. The daunting challenge of poverty and inequality and the human development may not be addressed only with growth, though growth is a pre-requisite to it. The two-pronged policy recommendation would then be to strengthen the redistributive mechanism and empower the people with quality education and health.

Seasonal Variability In Air-Sea Fluxes Of Co2 In A River-Influenced Coastal Margin, Steven E. Lohrenz, Wei-Jun Cai, Fengwei Cai, Xiaogang Chen, Merritt Tuel Oct 2010

Seasonal Variability In Air-Sea Fluxes Of Co2 In A River-Influenced Coastal Margin, Steven E. Lohrenz, Wei-Jun Cai, Fengwei Cai, Xiaogang Chen, Merritt Tuel

Faculty Publications

Recent studies in the northern Gulf of Mexico and elsewhere have demonstrated that enhanced biological production in large river plumes may contribute to a net surface influx of atmospheric CO2. However, large rivers also deliver significant amounts of terrestrial carbon into continental margin waters; hence, the potential for large and variable signals in carbon flux exist in these regions. Here, we used a combination of satellite and ship-based observations to examine variability in surface pCO(2) and air-sea flux of carbon dioxide in relation to variations in river discharge and seasonal environmental conditions. Underway surface pCO(2) showed large seasonal differences based …

Silver Chalcogenide Based Memristor Devices, Antonio S. Oblea, Achyut Timilsina, David Moore, Kristy A. Campbell

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

We have fabricated two-terminal chalcogenide-based devices containing Ge2Se3 and Ag that function as memristors. These devices have been electrically characterized at room temperature using quasi-static DC methods, AC sinusoidal methods, and AC pulse testing methods. In all cases, the devices exhibit memristive behavior.

Exploring The Human Interactivity With A Robot To Obtain The Fundamental Properties Of Materials, William L. Christian Oct 2010

Exploring The Human Interactivity With A Robot To Obtain The Fundamental Properties Of Materials, William L. Christian

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This research studies the way in which humans and robots interact with each other. When two humans are working together through a set of robotic devices, do they tend to work together or fight with each other more? In which Cartesian direction do they have the most difficulty? Does fighting drastically affect the performance of the team? Finally, what measures can be taken to promote better cooperation between humans and robots to ultimately allow humans to work just as comfortably with a robotic partner as with a human partner? This research answers these questions and provides an analysis of human-robot …
