Preventing Information Leakage From Indexing In The Cloud, Anna Squicciarini, Smitha Sundareswaran, Dan Lin

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Cloud computing enables highly scalable services to be easily consumed over the Internet on an as-needed basis. While cloud computing is expanding rapidly and used by many individuals and organizations internationally, data protection issues in the cloud have not been carefully addressed at current stage. Users' fear of confidential data (particularly financial and health data) leakage and loss of privacy in the cloud may become a significant barrier to the wide adoption of cloud services. in this paper, we explore a newly emerging problem of information leakage caused by indexing in the cloud. We design a three-tier data protection architecture …

Exploring The Benefits Of Buying Industry Leading It Infrastructure In A Healthcare Setting, Frank Biondolillo

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

IT infrastructure leaders are under growing pressure to balance the demand for new and rapidly changing technologies in an era of fixed or declining IT budgets. They must buy wisely, make sure that every infrastructure dollar is spent wisely, and ensure it all fits into a preconceived plan that supports the organization's mission. This research looks at the IT literature, develops a qualitative research methodology and presents findings from a new study of IT infrastructure decision making in the healthcare industry. The findings show that healthcare technology leaders are building critical components of their infrastructure using the top two hardware …

Chelate-Assisted Oxidative Coupling Reaction Of Arylamides And Unactivated Alkenes: Mechanistic Evidence For Vinyl C–H Bond Activation Promoted By An Electrophilic Ruthenium-Hydride Catalyst, Ki Hyeok Kwon, Do W. Lee, Chae S. Yi Oct 2010

Chelate-Assisted Oxidative Coupling Reaction Of Arylamides And Unactivated Alkenes: Mechanistic Evidence For Vinyl C–H Bond Activation Promoted By An Electrophilic Ruthenium-Hydride Catalyst, Ki Hyeok Kwon, Do W. Lee, Chae S. Yi

Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications

The cationic ruthenium hydride complex [(η6-C6H6)(PCy3)(CO)RuH]+BF4− was found to be a highly regioselective catalyst for the oxidative C−H coupling reaction of aryl-substituted amides and unactivated alkenes to give o-alkenylamide products. The kinetic and spectroscopic analyses support a mechanism involving a rapid vinyl C−H activation followed by a rate-limiting C−C bond formation step.

Here, we report the initial observations of distributions of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) in subsurface waters near the Deepwater Horizon oil well site (also referred to as the Macondo, Mississippi Canyon Block 252 or MC252 well). Profiles of in situ fluorescence and beam attenuation conducted during 9-16 May 2010 were characterized by distinct peaks at depths greater than 1000 m, with highest intensities close to the wellhead and decreasing intensities with increasing distance from the wellhead. Gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) analyses of water samples coinciding with the deep fluorescence and beam attenuation anomalies confirmed the presence of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons …

Information Systems and Engineering Management Research Publications

Differential astrometry measurements from the Palomar High-precision Astrometric Search for Exoplanet Systems have been combined with lower precision single-aperture measurements covering a much longer timespan (from eyepiece measurements, speckle interferometry, and adaptive optics) to determine improved visual orbits for 20 binary stars. In some cases, radial velocity observations exist to constrain the full three-dimensional orbit and determine component masses. The visual orbit of one of these binaries—α Com (HD 114378)—shows that the system is likely to have eclipses, despite its very long period of 26 years. The next eclipse is predicted to be within a week of 2015 January 24.

Information Systems and Engineering Management Research Publications

The Palomar High-precision Astrometric Search for Exoplanet Systems monitored 51 subarcsecond binary systems to evaluate whether tertiary companions as small as Jovian planets orbited either the primary or secondary stars, perturbing their otherwise smooth Keplerian motions. Six binaries are presented that show evidence of substellar companions orbiting either the primary or secondary star. Of these six systems, the likelihoods of two of the detected perturbations to represent real objects are considered to be "high confidence," while the remaining four systems are less certain and will require continued observations for confirmation.

Information Systems and Engineering Management Research Publications

The Palomar High-precision Astrometric Search for Exoplanet Systems (PHASES) monitored 51 subarcsecond binary systems to evaluate whether tertiary companions as small as Jovian planets orbited either the primary or secondary stars, perturbing their otherwise smooth Keplerian motions. Twenty-one of those systems were observed 10 or more times and show no evidence of additional companions. A new algorithm is presented for identifying astrometric companions and establishing the (companion mass)–(orbital period) combinations that can be excluded from existence with high confidence based on the PHASES observations, and the regions of mass–period phase space being excluded are presented for 21 PHASES binaries.

Expertise3: Outcomes Of Instructor Collaboration On Elementary Teacher Education In Mathematics, Mary P. Truxaw, Fabiana Cardetti, Cynthia A. Bushey

NERA Conference Proceedings 2010

This research grew from two university faculty members’ and one doctoral student’s collaboration across different academic fields (mathematics and education) to better serve elementary preservice teachers (PSTs). The collaboration resulted in shared expertise and an ongoing investigation of confidence of mathematical content knowledge (M-CK) and mathematics pedagogical content knowledge (M-PCK) of PSTs who participated in math content coursework designed for elementary teachers. Findings suggest that PSTs who take one or more of these content courses, along with a mathematics methods course, have higher M-CK and M-PCK than PSTs who take only traditional mathematics courses along with a mathematics methods course.

An Investigation Of Student Study Behaviors In Post-Secondary Classes, Jess L. Gregory, Cicely Horsham-Brathwaite, Margaret Lally Queenan, Beth Pamela Skott

NERA Conference Proceedings 2010

The current study explored study skills utilized by students across post-secondary academic levels. One hundred and forty eight students from a private university in the Northeast completed a survey that assessed participants’ self-reported frequency of use of textbook skills, note taking, memory, test preparation, concentration, and time management. Textbook skills, p<.01 and time management skills, p<.05 were found to be positively correlated with class level. The results indicated that advanced students more frequently utilized time management and textbook skills; however students at all levels might benefit from direct instruction on other effective study skills. Implications for the study are discussed.

The Impact Of A College Readiness Initiative In A Large, Urban School District, Jennifer Bausmith, Mary Mckillip, Thanos Patelis Oct 2010

The Impact Of A College Readiness Initiative In A Large, Urban School District, Jennifer Bausmith, Mary Mckillip, Thanos Patelis

NERA Conference Proceedings 2010

The first in a series of studies, this paper describes the effect of a large, urban district implementing a PSAT/NMSQT (PN) fee waiver initiative in the 2006-07 school year in an effort to increase students’ access to feedback on their readiness for college. The results suggest that the fee waiver increased access for underrepresented and lower skill students. However, this information did not appear to translate into increased SAT participation which would be a logical next step in the college application process. Additional outreach seems needed to push students to that next level.

“Bio Buddies:” Peer Tutoring As An Instructional Strategy, Pat Romano, Joan Walker Oct 2010

“Bio Buddies:” Peer Tutoring As An Instructional Strategy, Pat Romano, Joan Walker

NERA Conference Proceedings 2010

Peer tutoring (PALS) is an instructional strategy where peers act as “instructional agents” for fellow students. In this study, 10 high school biology students participated in a ten day peer-tutoring intervention to determine whether peer tutoring would 1) facilitate student academic success, 2) enhance student focus as well as engagement in biology class, and 3) favorably affect students’ behavior in class leading to fewer off- task behavioral problems. Baseline data and post-intervention data included scores on academic tasks, student surveys, student reflection journal entries, teacher observation field notes, and behavior checklists. Student scores were higher after peer-tutoring, with the exception …
