Gesture And Learning About Objects, Robert R. Freund Jan 2010

Gesture And Learning About Objects, Robert R. Freund

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

The role of gestures in determining the use of familiar and novel tools was explored. In the first study, participants were shown gestures for tools corresponding either to tool design, or to the physical affordances of a puzzle designed for each tool. In the second study, two additional conditions were added. In the first, gestures were used that did not correspond to tool design or the puzzle affordances. The second was a control condition in which no gestures were shown. Results indicate that the demonstration of gestures appropriate to a novel problem situation facilitate creative use of tools. Additionally, attention …

Hydrodynamic Analysis Of Ocean Current Turbines Using Vortex Lattice Method, Aneesh Goly Jan 2010

Hydrodynamic Analysis Of Ocean Current Turbines Using Vortex Lattice Method, Aneesh Goly

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

The main objective of the thesis is to carry out a rigorous hydrodynamic analysis of ocean current turbines and determine power for a range of flow and geometric parameters. For the purpose, a computational tool based on the vortex lattice method (VLM) is developed. Velocity of the flow on the turbine blades, in relation to the freestream velocity, is determined through induction factors. The geometry of trailing vortices is taken to be helicoidal. The VLM code is validated by comparing its results with other theoretical and experimental data corresponding to flows about finite-aspect ratio foils, swept wings and a marine …

Individual Profiling Of Perceived Tinnitus By Developing Tinnitus Analyzer Software, Baishali. Chaudbury

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Tinnitus is a conscious perception of phantom sounds in the absence of external acoustic stimuli, and masking is one of the popular ways to treat it. Due to the variation in the perceived tinnitus sound from patient to patient, the usefulness of masking therapy cannot be generalized. Thus, it is important to first determine the feasibility of masking therapy on a particular patient, by quantifying the tinnitus sound, and then generate an appropriate masking signal. This paper aims to achieve this kind of individual profiling by developing interactive software -Tinnitus Analyzer, based on clinical approach. The developed software has been …

Maintaining Self-Intergrity Through Superstitious Behavior, Ryan M. Moyer Jan 2010

Maintaining Self-Intergrity Through Superstitious Behavior, Ryan M. Moyer

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Superstitious behavior is still a common occurrence in modern society, seemingly impervious to intellectual progress that humans have made throughout history. While the desire to maintain a sense of control over one's environment has been investigated as one of the key motivations behind superstitious behavior, it has yet to be examined within the context of the self-concept. Threats to one's sense of control can also be construed as general threats to one's global sense of self-worth. Consequently, while superstitious behavior may be triggered by control threats, it may also occur as a result of any general threat to self-integrity. Moreover, …

Mechanisms For Prolonging Network Lifetime In Wireless Sensor Networks, Yinying. Yang Jan 2010

Mechanisms For Prolonging Network Lifetime In Wireless Sensor Networks, Yinying. Yang

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Sensors are used to monitor and control the physical environment. A Wireless Sen- sor Network (WSN) is composed of a large number of sensor nodes that are densely deployed either inside the phenomenon or very close to it [18][5]. Sensor nodes measure various parameters of the environment and transmit data collected to one or more sinks, using hop-by-hop communication. Once a sink receives sensed data, it processes and forwards it to the users. Sensors are usually battery powered and it is hard to recharge them. It will take a limited time before they deplete their energy and become unfunctional. Optimizing …

Model Analysis Of A Mooring System For An Ocean Current Turbine Testing Platform, Allison Rose Cribbs Jan 2010

Model Analysis Of A Mooring System For An Ocean Current Turbine Testing Platform, Allison Rose Cribbs

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

In response to Florida's growing energy needs and drive to develop renewable power, Florida Atlantic Universitys Center for Ocean Energy Technology (COET) plans to moor a 20 kW test turbine in the Florida Current. No permanent mooring systems for deepwater hydrokinetic turbines have been constructed and deployed, therefore little if anything is known about the performance of these moorings. To investigate this proposed mooring system, a numeric model is developed and then used to predict the static and dynamic behavior of the mooring system and attachments. The model has been created in OrcaFlex and includes two surface buoys and an …

On Projective Planes, Cafer. Caliskan Jan 2010

On Projective Planes, Cafer. Caliskan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

This work was motivated by the well-known question: "Does there exist a nondesarguesian projective plane of prime order?" For a prime p < 11, there is only the pappian plane of order p. Hence, such planes are indeed desarguesian. Thus, it is of interest to examine whether there are non-desarguesian planes of order 11. A suggestion by Ascher Wagner in 1985 was made to Spyros S. Magliveras: "Begin with a non-desarguesian plane of order pk, k > 1, determine all subplanes of order p up to collineations, and check whether one of these is non-desarguesian." In this manuscript we use a group-theoretic methodology to determine the subplane structures of some non-desarguesian planes. In particular, we determine orbit representatives of all proper Q-subplanes both of a Veblen-Wedderburn (VW) plane of order 121 and of the Hughes plane of order 121, under their full collineation groups. In PI, there are 13 orbits of Baer subplanes, all of …

Open Water Testing Of A Surface Piercing Propeller With Varying Submergence, Yaw Angle And Inclination Angle, Justin M. Lorio Jan 2010

Open Water Testing Of A Surface Piercing Propeller With Varying Submergence, Yaw Angle And Inclination Angle, Justin M. Lorio

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

The use of surface piercing propellers (SPPs) shows promise for high speed operation by virtually eliminating appendage drag, which can be as much as 30 percent of the total drag on a vehicle at high speeds. The scarcity of available systematic test data has made reliable performance prediction difficult. The primary objective of this research is to obtain experimental performance prediction data that can be used in SPP design. In a series of open water tests in a non-pressurized towing tank facility, force transducer measurements were taken at tip immersion ratios from 0.5 to .33, yaw angles from 0° to …

Sensitivity Analysis Of Blind Separation Of Speech Mixtures, Savaskan. Bulek Jan 2010

Sensitivity Analysis Of Blind Separation Of Speech Mixtures, Savaskan. Bulek

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Blind source separation (BSS) refers to a class of methods by which multiple sensor signals are combined with the aim of estimating the original source signals. Independent component analysis (ICA) is one such method that effectively resolves static linear combinations of independent non-Gaussian distributions. We propose a method that can track variations in the mixing system by seeking a compromise between adaptive and block methods by using mini-batches. The resulting permutation indeterminacy is resolved based on the correlation continuity principle. Methods employing higher order cumulants in the separation criterion are susceptible to outliers in the finite sample case. We propose …

Signature System For Video Identification, Sebastian Possos Medellin Jan 2010

Signature System For Video Identification, Sebastian Possos Medellin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Video signature techniques based on tomography images address the problem of video identification. This method relies on temporal segmentation and sampling strategies to build and determine the unique elements that will form the signature. In this thesis an extension for these methods is presented; first a new feature extraction method, derived from the previously proposed sampling pattern, is implemented and tested, resulting in a highly distinctive set of signature elements, second a robust temporal video segmentation system is used to replace the original method applied to determine shot changes more accurately. Under a very exhaustive set of tests the system …

Task Allocation And Path Planning For Acoustic Networks Of Auvs, Yueyue Deng

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Controlling the cooperative behaviors of a fleet of autonomous underwater vehicles in a stochastic, complex environment is a formidable challenge in artificial intelligence. The complexity arises from the challenges of limited navigation and communication capabilities of underwater environment. A time critical cooperative operation by acoustic networks of Multiple Cooperative Vehicles (MCVs) necessitates a robust task allocation mechanism and an efficient path planning model. In this work, we present solutions to investigate two aspects of the cooperative schema for multiple underwater vehicles under realistic underwater acoustic communications: a Location-aided Task Allocation Framework (LAAF) algorithm for multi-target task assignment and a mathematical …

The Finite Abelian Hidden Subgroup Problem, Bernd Losert Jan 2010

The Finite Abelian Hidden Subgroup Problem, Bernd Losert

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

The hidden subgroup problem has been an active topic of research in quantum computing for over the past 10 years. Out of all the literature that is out there on this topic, there are very few survey articles which discuss most or all of the details concerning the Abelian hidden subgroup problem. As a matter of fact , many articles [17, 26 , 22, 45] claim that an eff-icient quantum algorithm for the Abelian hidden subgroup problem is folklore. To quote Jozsa [21]: " ... the detailed description of an efficient quantum algorithm for the general abelian hidden subgroup problem …

Unique Decomposition Of Direct Sums Of Ideals, Basak. Ay Jan 2010

Unique Decomposition Of Direct Sums Of Ideals, Basak. Ay

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

We say that a commutative ring R has the unique decomposition into ideals (UDI) property if, for any R-module which decomposes into a finite direct sum of indecomposable ideals, this decomposition is unique up to the order and isomorphism class of the ideals. In a 2001 paper, Goeters and Olberding characterize the UDI property for Noetherian integral domains. In Chapters 1-3 the UDI property for reduced Noetherian rings is characterized. In Chapter 4 it is shown that overrings of one-dimensional reduced commutative Noetherian rings with the UDI property have the UDI property, also. In Chapter 5 we show that the …

A search for events containing an isolated electron or muon and missing transverse momentum produced in e±p collisions is performed with the H1 and ZEUS detectors at HERA. The data were taken in the period 1994-2007 and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 0.98 fb-1. The observed event yields are in good overall agreement with the Standard Model prediction, which is dominated by single W production. In the e+p data, at large hadronic transverse momentum PTX < 25GeV, a total of 23 events are observed compared to a prediction of 14.0 ±1.9. The total single W boson production cross section is measured as 1.06 ± 0.16 (stat.) ± 0.07 (sys.) pb, in agreement with an Standard Model (SM) expectation of 1.26 ± 0.19 pb.

Charged particle production has been studied in neutral current deep inelastic ep scattering with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 0.44 fb?1. Distributions of scaled momenta in the Breit frame are presented for particles in the current fragmentation region. The evolution of these spectra with the photon virtuality, Q2, is described in the kinematic region 10 < Q2< 41000Ge V2. Next-to-leading-order and modified leading-log-approximation QCD calculations as well as predictions from Monte Carlo models are compared to the data. The results are also compared to e+e? annihilation data. The dependences of the pseudorapidity distribution of the particles on Q2 and on the energy in the p system, W, are presented and interpreted in the context of the hypothesis of limiting fragmentation.

A Bi-Regional Cge Model Of The South West Housing Market, Sarah-Jane Keast Jan 2010

A Bi-Regional Cge Model Of The South West Housing Market, Sarah-Jane Keast

Plymouth Business School Theses

Volatility within the UK housing market is thought to be a significant factor driving instability in the wider macro economy. Research investigating the characteristics and behaviour of the housing market has suggested that under supply of housing is one of the key reasons for the high and increasing levels of house prices the nation has recently been experiencing. Consequently, much of the current government's housing policy is aimed at increasing the level of supply by reforming the planning system and increasing investment in the development of new housing. Under supply is also a major concern at the regional level, particularly …
