Background: The rising temperature of the world’s oceans has become a major threat to coral reefs globally as the severity and frequency of mass coral bleaching and mortality events increase. In 2005, high ocean temperatures in the tropical Atlantic and Caribbean resulted in the most severe bleaching event ever recorded in the basin.

Methodology/Principal Findings: Satellite-based tools provided warnings for coral reef managers and scientists, guiding both the timing and location of researchers’ field observations as anomalously warm conditions developed and spread across the greater Caribbean region from June to October 2005. Field surveys of bleaching and mortality exceeded prior …

We investigated the electronic properties of N(5)-ethyl flavinium perchlorate (Et-Fl(+)) and compared them to those of its parent compound, 3-methyllumiflavin (Fl). Absorption and fluorescence spectra of Fl and Et-Fl(+) exhibit similar spectral features, but the absorption energy of Et-Fl(+) is substantially lower than that of Fl. We calculated the absorption signatures of Fl and Et-Fl(+) using time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) methods and found that the main absorption bands of Fl and Et-Fl(+) are (pi,pi*) transitions for the S(1) and S(3) excited states. Furthermore, calculations predict that the S(2) state has (n,pi*) character. Using cyclic voltammetry and a simplistic consideration …

A Study Of The Lyapunov Stability Of An Open-Loop Induction Machine, Ahmed Oteafy, John Chiasson Nov 2010

A Study Of The Lyapunov Stability Of An Open-Loop Induction Machine, Ahmed Oteafy, John Chiasson

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

The induction motor is widely utilized in industry and exists in a plethora of applications. Until the last 20 years or so, it was primarily used in an open-loop fashion (i.e., balanced sinusoidal voltages, constant load torque and viscous friction) with its inherent stability counted on to allow operation over a wide range of operating conditions. Unlike classical arguments based on the steady-state torque-slip curve, a rigorous analytical stability argument using the full nonlinear dynamical model is presented. In particular, conditions for global asymptotic stability of the induction motor in the sense of Lyapunov are given in terms of the …

Emission of bromine from sea-salt aerosol, frost flowers, ice leads, and snow results in the nearly complete removal of surface ozone during Arctic spring. Regions of enhanced total column BrO observed by satellites have traditionally been associated with these emissions. However, airborne measurements of BrO and O3 within the convective boundary layer (CBL) during the ARCTAS and ARCPAC field campaigns at times bear little relation to enhanced column BrO. We show that the locations of numerous satellite BrO “hotspots” during Arctic spring are consistent with observations of total column ozone and tropopause height, suggesting a stratospheric origin to these …

Development And Evaluation Of Methods For Surveying Fish Populations In Nearshore Waters, Philip Smith, Ian Burrett, David Bailey, Francis Neat, David Donnan, Katherine Dunlop, James Thorburn, Rosanna Milligan, Steve Bastiman, Jane Dodd Nov 2010

Development And Evaluation Of Methods For Surveying Fish Populations In Nearshore Waters, Philip Smith, Ian Burrett, David Bailey, Francis Neat, David Donnan, Katherine Dunlop, James Thorburn, Rosanna Milligan, Steve Bastiman, Jane Dodd

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Reports

  1. Nearshore areas provide critical habitat for a range of fish species targeted by commercial and recreational fisheries, both of which make an important contribution to local economies in rural areas. However, established trawl survey methods are not suited to many nearshore areas, owing to shallow depths, obstructions on the sea bed or vulnerable habitats, so there is a lack of information on fish abundance in these areas.
  2. The aim of the present project was to develop and test survey methods applicable to Scottish inshore waters, focussing on baited underwater cameras, fish traps, systematic rod-and-line surveys and observations of fish bycatch …

This paper describes a 3D environmental data compression technique for oceanographic datasets. With proper point selection, our method approximates uncompressed marine data using an over-determined system of linear equations based on, but essentially different from, the Laplacian partial differential equation. Then this approximation is refined via an error metric. These two steps work alternatively until a predefined satisfying approximation is found. Using several different datasets and metrics, we demonstrate that our method has an excellent compression ratio. To further evaluate our method, we compare it with 3D-SPIHT. 3D-ODETLAP averages 20% better compression than 3D-SPIHT on our eight test datasets, from …

Oh And Oi Airglow Layer Modulation By Ducted Shortperiod Gravity Waves: Effects Of Trapping Altitude, J. B. Snively, V. P. Pasko, Michael J. Taylor

All Physics Faculty Publications

Perturbations to the OH and OI [O(1S) 557.7 nm] airglow layers by ducted gravity waves near the Brunt-Väisälä period are investigated using a 2-D numerical model. Airglow signatures of these waves are strongly determined by perturbations of O, O3, and H, which exhibit peak densities near and above mesopause. Strong periodic vertical wind components of short-period gravity waves induce opposite relative density perturbations above and below the layer density peaks. Airglow signatures for ducted waves depend on the specific vertical shapes and altitudes of the wave packets relative to ambient species density profiles; waves perturbing …

Levee overtopping can lead to failure and cause catastrophic damage, as was the case during Hurricane Katrina. We present a computer simulation of erosion to study the development of the rills and gullies that form along an earthen embankment during overtopping. We have coupled 3D Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics with an erodibility model to produce our simulation. Through comparison between simulations and between simulation and analogous laboratory experiments, we provide quantitative and qualitative results, evaluating the accuracy of our simulation.

Time Dilation In Relativistic Two-Particle Interactions, B T. Shields, Rainer Grobe, E V. Stefanovich, M R. Ware, Qichang Su, M C. Morris

Faculty publications – Physics

We study the orbits of two interacting particles described by a fully relativistic classical mechanical Hamiltonian. We use two sets of initial conditions. In the first set (dynamics 1) the system's center of mass is at rest. In the second set (dynamics 2) the center of mass evolves with velocity V. If dynamics 1 is observed from a reference frame moving with velocity-V, the principle of relativity requires that all observables must be identical to those of dynamics 2 seen from the laboratory frame. Our numerical simulations demonstrate that kinematic Lorentz space-time transformations fail to transform particle observables between the …

Autonomous Underwater Vehicles As Tools For Deep-Submergence Archaeology, Christopher N. Roman, Ian Roderick Mather Nov 2010

Autonomous Underwater Vehicles As Tools For Deep-Submergence Archaeology, Christopher N. Roman, Ian Roderick Mather

Graduate School of Oceanography Faculty Publications

Marine archaeology beyond the capabilities of scuba divers is a technologically enabled field. The tool suite includes ship-based systems such as towed side-scan sonars and remotely operated vehicles, and more recently free-swimming autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs). Each of these platforms has various imaging and mapping capabilities appropriate for specific scales and tasks. Broadly speaking, AUVs are becoming effective tools for locating, identifying, and surveying archaeological sites. This paper discusses the role of AUVs in this suite of tools, outlines some specific design criteria necessary to maximize their utility in the field, and presents directions for future developments. Results are presented …

Technologies Of Mobile Communication, Monika Margilaj Nov 2010

Technologies Of Mobile Communication, Monika Margilaj

Theses and Dissertations

Long-Term Evolution (LTE) is a new technology recently specified by 3GPP-Third Generation Partnership Project on the way towards fourth-generation mobile. This thesis presents the main technical features of this technology as well as its performances in terms of peak bit rate and average cell throughput, among others. LTE entails a big technological improvement as compared with the previous 3G standards. 1 However, this thesis also demonstrates that LTE performances do not fulfill the technical requirements established by ITU-R to classify one radio access technology as a member of the IMT-Advanced family of standards. Thus, this thesis describes the procedure followed …

Factors Influencing Teacher Job Satisfaction And Their Alignment With Current District Practices In A Suburban School District, Kimberly Rae Dickens Nov 2010

Factors Influencing Teacher Job Satisfaction And Their Alignment With Current District Practices In A Suburban School District, Kimberly Rae Dickens

Dissertations

School districts across the country make many decisions that impact teachers’ satisfaction both positively and negatively. With statistics reporting a significant number of teachers leaving the profession in the first 5 years of experience, determining the reasons for teacher dissatisfaction are important in shaping district practices to be more supportive and satisfying to teachers. The purpose of this research study was to (a) determine the satisfaction level of teachers in a specific school district, (b) determine the practices school principals have put into place and how they relate to the factors identified in the research as being contributive to teacher …

Grinberg's Criterion Applied To Some Non-Planar Graphs, G.L. Chia, C. Thomassen

Research Publications (2006 to 2010)

Robertson ([3]) and independently, Bondy ([1]) proved that the generalized Petersen graph P(n,2) is non-hamiltonian if n == 5 (mod 6), while Thomason ([5]) proved that it has precisely 3 hamiltonian cycles if n == 3 (mod 6). The hamiltonian cycles in the remaining generalized Petersen graphs were enumerated by Schwenk ([4]). In this note we give a short unified proof of these results using Grinberg's theorem.

Rare Earth And High Field Strength Element Partitioning Between Iron-Rich Clinopyroxenes And Felsic Liquids, Paul H. Olin, John A. Wolff Nov 2010

Rare Earth And High Field Strength Element Partitioning Between Iron-Rich Clinopyroxenes And Felsic Liquids, Paul H. Olin, John A. Wolff

Geosciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

Rare earth elements are commonly assumed to substitute only for Ca in clinopyroxene because of the similarity of ionic radii for REE3+ and Ca2+ in 8-fold coordination. The assumption is valid for Mg-rich clinopyroxenes for which observed mineral/melt partition coefficients are readily predicted by the lattice strain model for substitution onto a single site (e.g. Wood and Blundy, 1997). We show that natural Fe-rich pyroxenes in both silica-undersaturated and -oversaturated magmatic systems deviate from this behavior. Salites (Mg# 48 to 59) in phonolites from Tenerife, ferrohedenbergites (Mg# 14.2 to 16.2) from the rhyolitic Bandelier Tuff, and ferroaugites (Mg# …

The Positive Solutions Of The Matukuma Equation And The Problem Of Finite Radius And Finite Mass, Jurgen Batt, Yi Li Nov 2010

The Positive Solutions Of The Matukuma Equation And The Problem Of Finite Radius And Finite Mass, Jurgen Batt, Yi Li

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

This work is an extensive study of the 3 different types of positive solutions of the Matukuma equation 1r2(r2ϕ′)′=−rλ−2(1+r2)λ/2ϕp,p>1,λ>0 : the E-solutions (regular at r = 0), the M-solutions (singular at r = 0) and the F-solutions (whose existence begins away from r = 0). An essential tool is a transformation of the equation into a 2-dimensional asymptotically autonomous system, whose limit sets (by a theorem of H. R. Thieme) are the limit sets of Emden–Fowler systems, and serve as a characterization of the different solutions. The emphasis lies on the study of the M …

Ontology Alignment For Linked Open Data, Prateek Jain, Pascal Hitzler, Amit P. Sheth, Kunal Verma, Peter Z. Yeh

Kno.e.sis Publications

The Web of Data currently coming into existence through the Linked Open Data (LOD) effort is a major milestone in realizing the Semantic Web vision. However, the development of applications based on LOD faces difficulties due to the fact that the different LOD datasets are rather loosely connected pieces of information. In particular, links between LOD datasets are almost exclusively on the level of instances, and schema-level information is being ignored. In this paper, we therefore present a system for finding schema-level links between LOD datasets in the sense of ontology alignment. Our system, called BLOOMS, is based on the …

Defects At Oxygen Plasma Cleaned Zno Polar Surfaces, Y. F. Dong, Z-Q. Fang, David C. Look, Daniel R. Doutt, G. Cantwell, J. Zhang, J. J. Song, L. J. Brillson

Physics Faculty Publications

Depth-resolved cathodoluminescence spectroscopy (DRCLS) reveals the evolution of surface and near surface defects at polar surfaces with remote oxygen plasma (ROP) treatment. Furthermore, this evolution exhibits significant differences that depend on surface polarity. ROP decreased the predominant 2.5 eV defect emission related to oxygen vacancies on the O face, while creating a new 2.1 eV defect emission on the Zn face that increases with ROP time. The surface-located 2.1 eV emission correlates with carrier profiles from capacitance-voltage measurements and a shift of the E3 trap to higher binding energy from deep level transient spectroscopy (DLTS). This result suggests that ROP …

Small-Scale Helicopter System Identification Model Using Recurrent Neural Networks, Z. Taha, A. Deboucha, M. Dahari Nov 2010

Small-Scale Helicopter System Identification Model Using Recurrent Neural Networks, Z. Taha, A. Deboucha, M. Dahari

Research Publications (2006 to 2010)

Designing a reliable flight control for an autonomous helicopter requires a high performance dynamics model. This paper studies the recurrent neural network nonlinear model identification of a small scale helicopter. We have selected a Nonlinear AutoRegressive with eXogenous Inputs Series- Parallel (NARXSP) network model which identifies the dynamics model of an unmanned aerial helicopter from real flight data. The identification process is conducted by using the well known Levenberg-Marquardt learning algorithm. The obtained dynamics model shows good fitness with the actual data. This accuracy might be used to realize a reliable flight control for an autonomous helicopter.

Modeling And Numerical Investigation Of Hot Gas Defrost On A Finned Tube Evaporator Using Computational Fluid Dynamics, Oai The Ha

Master's Theses

Defrosting in the refrigeration industry is used to remove the frost layer accumulated on the evaporators after a period of running time. It is one way to improve the energy efficiency of refrigeration systems. There are many studies about the defrosting process but none of them use computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation. The purpose of this thesis is (1) to develop a defrost model using the commercial CFD solver FLUENT to simulate numerically the melting of frost coupled with the heat and mass transfer taking place during defrosting, and (2) to investigate the thermal response of the evaporator and the …

A Data-Driven Conceptualization Of Teacher Evaluation, Seyyed Ali Ostovar Namaghi

The Qualitative Report

Research perspectives on teacher evaluation present evaluators with a set of possible acts. Local evaluation systems, on the other hand, specify a permissible set of acts from the total universe. The acts specified within a given locality act as conditions for teacher action. Using the sampling and analytical procedures of grounded theory, this study aims at exploring how evaluation of teaching performance in universities of Iran conditions practitioners' action (conditions), what teachers do in the face of these conditions (action), and the effect these conditions and actions have on practitioners' professional life (consequences). The findings will be useful for stakeholders …
