Essays On Three Price Judgments: Price Fairness, Price Magnitude, And Price Expectation, Sandeep Bhowmick
Essays On Three Price Judgments: Price Fairness, Price Magnitude, And Price Expectation, Sandeep Bhowmick
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation addresses three important price judgments: price fairness, price magnitude, and price expectation. Developed over three chapters, the main objective of this research is to determine underlying differences in these three price judgments. These differences are based on conceptualizing price fairness as a combination of affective and cognitive components, whereas price magnitude and price expectation reflect different cognitive aspects of price judgment. Chapter 1 provides a literature review and identifies several research questions related to these three price judgments; Chapters 2 and 3 provide testable hypotheses and conduct three pretests and two experiments to test the hypotheses. Using structural …

This action research is intended to analyze this goal for possible application in any regular high school Physics classroom, using myself as a case study. The Force Concept Inventory was used as a pretest/posttest determinate of the learning gains of 85 students spread through four regular Physics classes during the 2009-10 school year. Forty-Two of these students were used as an experimental group where the response component of Peer Instruction was …
Using Inoceramid Bivalve Taphonomy As A Paleoenvironmental Indicator Across The Cenomanian/Turonian Horizon At The Pueblo, Colorado Gssp, Jacob Frederick Grosskopf
Using Inoceramid Bivalve Taphonomy As A Paleoenvironmental Indicator Across The Cenomanian/Turonian Horizon At The Pueblo, Colorado Gssp, Jacob Frederick Grosskopf
LSU Master's Theses
Recent paleoenvironmental and geochemical studies indicate that benthic conditions during Oceanic Anoxic Event II (OAE II) (93.5 Mya) in the Cretaceous Interior Seaway (CIS) were dysoxic rather than anoxic. In this thesis, dysoxic benthic conditions were tested for by observing patterns in taphonomic alteration of the calcite portions of inoceramid bivalve shells during and after OAE II. Inoceramid valves were extracted from beds that spanned OAE II at the Cenomanian/Turonian Global Boundary Stratotype Section and Point (GSSP) in Pueblo, Colorado: beds 62 (Hartland Shale), 72 (Bridge Creek Limestone), and 115 (Bridge Creek Limestone). Degree of alteration was tallied using categorical …
Optimized Extraction Of Soluble Defatted Rice Bran Fiber And Its Application For Microencapsulation Of Fish Oil, Yuting Wan
LSU Master's Theses
Defatted rice bran (DRB) is a byproduct of rice milling and rice bran oil extraction. Soluble rice bran fiber (SRBF) extracted from defatted rice bran is known for its antioxidant activity and hypocholesterolemic effects in human, while purified menhaden oil (PMO) is a good source of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). The goal of the study was to estimate optimum extraction conditions to extract SRBF from DRB, develop a cost effective method to purify SRBF and produce microencapsulated PMO with SRBF. The response surface methodology showed that an estimated optimum yield of SRBF (7.89%) could be extracted from …
The National Impact Test: Applying Principled Commerce Clause Analysis To Federal Environmental Regulation, David M. Metres
The National Impact Test: Applying Principled Commerce Clause Analysis To Federal Environmental Regulation, David M. Metres
UC Law Journal
Current doctrine limits Congress's commerce power to regulation of "economic" activities. Because many environmental laws regulate noneconomic objects, some have argued that the Constitution does not grant Congress power to enact these environmental laws.
This Note rejects analysis of whether an object of regulation is "economic," and substitutes a test inspired by the principles underlying the Commerce Clause to demarcate the proper spheres of federal and state regulatory authority. Under the "national impact test," courts should evaluate whether federal legislation regulates activities with a nationwide impact or which the states cannot regulate on their own. If Congress does not make …
Reflections On Teaching: Dwelling In A Third Space, Sean William Buckreis
Reflections On Teaching: Dwelling In A Third Space, Sean William Buckreis
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
What does it mean to teach well? What does it mean to be a good teacher? These are questions that have been asked for hundreds if not thousands of years; yet, an unequivocal answer has not been reached. Drawing on Thomas Kuhn’s (1962/1996) concept of a paradigm, it is easy to see that the field of curriculum is anything but paradigmatic. Competing philosophical, psychological, and sociological schools of thought, for example, all support differing ideas of what “good teaching” looks like, and teacher education programs often reflect this diversity of thought. The situation does not end at the borders of …
The Development Of Primary And Secondary Memory And Their Relationship To Fluid Intelligence, Sharon Diane Eaves
The Development Of Primary And Secondary Memory And Their Relationship To Fluid Intelligence, Sharon Diane Eaves
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Researchers have been able to link working memory to many important cognitive abilities throughout the life span. Two of the unanswered questions about working memory are what cognitive processes function during working memory task performance and how do these processes directly relate to intelligence? A recent model (Unsworth & Engle, 2006) suggested that performance on working memory tasks was determined by two abilities: the capacity of primary memory and the ability to efficiently retrieve information from secondary memory. In the current study, we extended Unsworth and Engle’s (2006) methodology to include two groups of children (ages 8-9 and 10-11). Our …

Early Life History Dynamics Of The Fish Community In The Atchafalaya River Basin, B. Thorpe Halloran
Early Life History Dynamics Of The Fish Community In The Atchafalaya River Basin, B. Thorpe Halloran
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Seasonal overbank flooding in systems like the Atchafalaya River Basin (ARB) provides the opportunity for fishes in the mainstem to access off-channel areas on the floodplain. Typically, newly inundated floodplain habitats allow adult fishes to add biomass, avoid predation, and potentially, to reproduce. However, in systems like the ARB, the timing, duration, and magnitude of flooding infrequently coincides with known reproductive periods of many fishes assumed to be floodplain-dependent. To quantify the level of floodplain-exploitative fish reproduction in the ARB, I collected larval and juvenile fish with a variety of sampling gear that allowed estimates in both ultra-shallow (< 2-m) and continuously-inundated habitats (headwater lakes, canals, and bayous). A suite of water quality parameters, river stage, flow, and hours of daylight were used to gauge the influence of environmental phenomena on age-0 abundance during both inundation and drawdown. The results of the 19-month study suggest that many taxa do not rely on the floodplain to ensure high survivorship. Interestingly, the reproductive ecologies of many ARB fishes appeared to be largely independent of widespread connectivity. Although an increasing hydrograph appeared to enhance reproductive output, the interannual timing and intensity of spawning showed limited variability. Larval densities were also contrasted with the microcrustacean zooplankton (copepods and cladocerans) population to assess if a potential food limitation existed in the weeks and months following hatching. During the study, increased zooplankter abundance was typically preceded by elevated river-floodplain connectivity. Conversely, as floodwaters receded during the summer, zooplankton abundance declined to lowest levels observed during the study. Overall, there was limited synchronous overlap between the hatchlings of most fish taxa and their zooplankter prey. This could have potentially resulted in starvation and reduced annual recruitment. Yet, my analysis of the factors that regulate larval fish abundance in the ARB suggest that the density of zooplankton was highly significant although high numbers of larvae and zooplankton rarely coincided. Finally, I compared the intraday (morning vs. afternoon) density and mean length of larval fish at fixed sample sites. The results suggest that once-daily ichthyoplankton collections may fail to provide accurate density and length measurements for young fish populations.
Dimer Models For Knot Polynomials, Moshe Cohen
Dimer Models For Knot Polynomials, Moshe Cohen
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
A dimer model consists of all perfect matchings on a (bipartite) weighted signed graph, where the product of the signed weights of each perfect matching is summed to obtain an invariant. In this paper, the construction of such a graph from a knot diagram is given to obtain the Alexander polynomial. This is further extended to a more complicated graph to obtain the twisted Alexander polynomial, which involved "twisting" by a representation. The space of all representations of a given knot complement into the general linear group of a fixed size can be described by the same graph. This work …
Degradation Behavior Of Shape Memory Polymer Due To Water And Diesel Fuel, Mohammad Nazmul Hasan Nahid
Degradation Behavior Of Shape Memory Polymer Due To Water And Diesel Fuel, Mohammad Nazmul Hasan Nahid
LSU Master's Theses
Shape memory polymers (SMP) are smart materials, which have the ability to memorize the original or permanent shape. Owing to this characteristic SMP can be used as a sensor, a transplant, as well as structural materials in wide range of applications. Despite its importance, its degradation behavior is still not completely known; and only a limited amount of work has been reported in the literature. In this thesis, the experiments have been carried out to evaluate the degradation behavior of Veriflex- SMP (industry supplied SMP samples) upon exposure to two different types of liquids; water and diesel fuel separately. It …
Experimental And Analytical Study Of The Surface Texturing Enhanced Lubrication Elements, Yifan Qiu
Experimental And Analytical Study Of The Surface Texturing Enhanced Lubrication Elements, Yifan Qiu
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Surface texturing is a method that modifies the frictional surface of a nominally flat tribocomponent by shallow patterns. It is found that with added patterns to the surface of a mechanical face seal or thrust bearing, their tribological performance improves, i.e. both friction and wear rate decrease. The current research concentrates on the analysis of hydrodynamic effect responsible for the performance enhancement of the spiral groove patterns and dimples on mechanical seal-like structures and the experimental evaluation of the tribological behavior of these structures. Surface textures considered are: dimple texture and spiral groove pattern. In the research on the dimple …
Thermal Conductivity And Its Effects On The Performance Of Pcc Pavements In Mepdg, Upender Kodide
Thermal Conductivity And Its Effects On The Performance Of Pcc Pavements In Mepdg, Upender Kodide
LSU Master's Theses
This study developed a standard thermal conductivity test procedure to test concrete specimens and studied factors influencing those specimens. The thermal conductivity of concrete is significantly affected by moisture content, type, and percentage of coarse aggregate; this finding was confirmed statistically by Analysis of Variance (ANOVA). The study also developed a model for predicting the thermal conductivity of concrete that varies with moisture content and the coarse aggregate percentage. To understand the effect of supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs), this study also measured thermal conductivity of control and ternary mixtures. An increase in thermal conductivity percentage due to increase in moisture …
Retention And Transport Of Mercury And Nickel In Soils, Lixia Liao
Retention And Transport Of Mercury And Nickel In Soils, Lixia Liao
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Nickel (Ni) is one of many trace metals widely distributed in the environment. High concentrations of Ni in soils and aquifers have been observed worldwide, causing several potential human health impacts. Better understanding of Ni transport in soils and aquifers is necessary to assess and remediate insitu environmental contamination. The movement of Ni in soils and aquifers is highly dependent on adsorption-desorption reactions in the solid phase. In this study, kinetic batch, sequential extractions, and miscible displacement experiments were conducted to investigate the effect of several of environmental factors including soil type, reaction time and competing ions, on the fate …
Maladies Of Modernity: Scientism In Politics, David Nathan Whitney
Maladies Of Modernity: Scientism In Politics, David Nathan Whitney
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation explores the complex relationship between science and politics. More specifically, it focuses on the problem of scientism. Features of scientism include the dogmatic faith in the methods of the natural sciences (and the accompanying assumption that those methods can be successfully imported into the social sciences), a materialistic worldview, the rejection of the bios theoretikos, the prohibition of philosophical questions, and an emphasis on immanent fulfillment through the power of science. I seek to demonstrate that scientism is intellectually impoverishing and politically dangerous. Given the lack of full-length studies on the subject, I trace the development of scientism …
Multigrid Methods For Maxwell's Equations, Jintao Cui
Multigrid Methods For Maxwell's Equations, Jintao Cui
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
In this work we study finite element methods for two-dimensional Maxwell's equations and their solutions by multigrid algorithms. We begin with a brief survey of finite element methods for Maxwell's equations. Then we review the related fundamentals, such as Sobolev spaces, elliptic regularity results, graded meshes, finite element methods for second order problems, and multigrid algorithms. In Chapter 3, we study two types of nonconforming finite element methods on graded meshes for a two-dimensional curl-curl and grad-div problem that appears in electromagnetics. The first method is based on a discretization using weakly continuous P1 vector fields. The second method uses …
An Adaptable Group Communication System, Vikram Reddy Kayathi
An Adaptable Group Communication System, Vikram Reddy Kayathi
LSU Master's Theses
Existing group communication systems like ISIS, Spread, Jgroups etc., provide group communication in a synchronous environment. They are built on top of TCP/IP or UDP and guarantee virtual synchrony and consistency. However, wide area distributed systems are inherently asynchronous. Existing group communication systems are not suitable for wide area deployment. They do not provide persistent communication; i.e., if a node gets temporarily disconnected, all messages directed to that node during that period are lost. Hence such systems are not suitable for deployment in disadvantaged networks. While, according to Brewer’s CAP theorem, it is impossible for a distributed computer system to …
Rapid Microwave-Assisted Acid Extraction Of Chromate Copper Arsenate (Cca)-Treated Southern Pine, Bin Yu
Rapid Microwave-Assisted Acid Extraction Of Chromate Copper Arsenate (Cca)-Treated Southern Pine, Bin Yu
LSU Master's Theses
Recovery of heavy metals from chromated copper arsenate (CCA) treated southern pine wood samples with three different dimension was investigated by recovery with acetic acid, oxalic acid and phosphoric acid in microwave reactor. Diluted phosphoric acid mixed with acetic acid was found to be very effective to remove copper, chromium, and arsenic from spent CCA-treated southern pine sawdust at a high temperature and in a short time. No single acid can totally recover all these three metals in one step in this method. Oxalic acid was effective in removing chromium and arsenic, and acetic acid was effective in removing copper …

Geothermal Resource Assessment Of The Gueydan Salt Dome And The Adjacent Southeast Gueydan Field, Vermilion Parish, Louisiana, Taylor Austin Gray
Geothermal Resource Assessment Of The Gueydan Salt Dome And The Adjacent Southeast Gueydan Field, Vermilion Parish, Louisiana, Taylor Austin Gray
LSU Master's Theses
The fluids heated by the high thermal conductivity and vertical geometry of salt domes in South Louisiana have the potential to be an economic source of geothermal energy. The Gueydan dome is a piercement salt diapir in Southwest Louisiana lying along the Vermilion and Acadia Parish border. Isotherms indicate a thermal anomaly at the crest of the dome with formation temperatures of 62 ˚C recorded at 1346 m, which is too cold for a geothermal prospect. The shallowest salt encountered is at a depth of 1475 m, and the surrounding strata are Cenozoic sand and clay deposits. Previous geothermal assessments …
A Study Of The Elongation Of Fibrils Of The Alzheimer's Amyloid Beta Protein With A Coarse-Grained Force Field, Ana Rojas
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a brain disorder named after the German psychiatrist Alois Alzheimer, who first described the disease in 1906. AD is a form of dementia, characterized by impairment of memory and other intellectual abilities, caused by the loss of neurons and synapses (the structures that permit communication between neurons) in certain regions of the brain. Although the mechanism by which neurons are affected is not yet well understood, research points to a small protein, the beta-amyloid peptide (Abeta), as the first suspect. Ab chains are present in the brains of healthy individuals, but in AD patients, they associate …
Analysis And Modeling Of Hurricane Impacts On A Coastal Louisiana Lake Bottom, Angelina Freeman
Analysis And Modeling Of Hurricane Impacts On A Coastal Louisiana Lake Bottom, Angelina Freeman
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Tropical cyclone impacts on wetland, terrestrial, and shelf systems have been previously studied and reasonably delineated, but little is known about the response of coastal lakes to storm events. For the first time, tropical cyclone impacts on a shallow coastal lake in the Louisiana coastal plain have been studied using direct lines of evidence and numerical modeling. Using side-scan sonar, CHIRP subbottom and echo sounder bathymetric profiles, the lake bottom and shallow subsurface of Sister Lake was imaged pre- and post-Hurricanes Katrina and Rita to provide a geologic framework for assessing the effects of these storms. Box cores were collected …
Cooking Times And Temperatures For Safe Consumption Of Louisiana Blue Crabs (Callinectes Sapidus), Nicole Watson Hazard
Cooking Times And Temperatures For Safe Consumption Of Louisiana Blue Crabs (Callinectes Sapidus), Nicole Watson Hazard
LSU Master's Theses
While all seafood has the potential of being associated with foodborne illness, Louisiana blue crabs (Callinectes sapidus) are exposed to Vibrio cholerae, Vibrio parahaemolyticus, Vibrio vulnificus, Listeria monocytogenes and Salmonella species in the estuarine habitat. This study was designed to determine the least amount of time and temperature needed to reduce or eliminate each of the aforementioned bacteria from a single Louisiana blue crab with either boiling or steaming heat treatments. Once the single crab heat treatment studies were completed, the bacteria that showed the greatest thermal resistance, Listeria monocytogenes, and the bacteria most associated with foodborne illness in Louisiana …
A Four-Cysteine Zinc Finger In Carboxyltransferase Structurally Links The Functions Of Enzymatic Activity And Negative Feedback Regulation Of Translation, Glen D. Meades
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Acetyl-CoA carboxylase is the first and committed step of de novo fatty acid synthesis in all organisms. In Escherichia coli, the enzyme is expressed as separate proteins for the three functional components: a biotin carboxylase, a biotin carboxyl carrier protein, and a carboxyltransferase. The carboxyltransferase enzyme has an α2β2 heterotetrameric quaternary arrangement. The crystal structure of the β subunit revealed a zinc-binding domain, a feature common among nucleic acid-binding proteins. Carboxyltransferase preferentially binds mRNA coding for its two subunits over other nucleic acids, suggesting a means by which the enzyme can regulate its own expression. In the first study, the …

Iron (Iii) Oxide And Copper (Ii) Oxide Mediated Formation Of Pcdd/Fs From Thermal Degradation Of 2-Mcp And 1,2-Dcbz, Shadrack Kirwa Nganai
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Formation of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) which occurs inexorably from most thermal and combustion processes constitutes a major toxic component of environmental pollutants. Generally, it is well established that transition metal-mediated reactions account for the majority of PCDD/F emissions from combustion sources. Specifically, both copper and iron ions, which occur abundantly in combustion generated particulate matter, are considered probably the most active in promoting PCDD/F formation typically in the low temperature post-combustion zone and flue gas pollution control devices. It has also been demonstrated that chlorinated phenols are key intermediates in essentially all pathways of PCDD/F formation. Chlorinated benzenes …

Habitat Use, Movements And Spring Migration Chronology And Corridors Of Female Gadwalls That Winter Along The Louisiana Gulf Coast, Jacob M. Gray
LSU Master's Theses
The Louisiana Gulf Coast is an important wintering area for North American gadwall (Anas strepera). Conservation of winter habitat is a top priority of the Gulf Coast Joint Venture. Quantitative estimates of habitat use by wintering gadwall would help improve energetic demand models and subsequent estimates of habitat requirements. I used satellite telemetry (PTTs) to estimate winter habitat and refuge uses, spring migration chronology and corridors, as well as inter- and intra-regional winter movements of females. I used a split-plot MANOVA to evaluate the effects of individual females, female age, winter, hunt periods within winter, time of day, and all …

Evaluation Of Microfacies Controls On Hydrocarbon Seal Quality, Nchekwube Mbamalu
LSU Master's Theses
A microfacies based approach is proposed for the petrophysical prediction of the most effective hydrocarbon seals. Four distinct microfacies types deposited by different deep water depositional processes have been identified based on textural and mineralogical characteristics. Individual microfacies types include: 1) finely laminated, silt poor to slightly silty hemipelagic claystones; 2) faintly laminated, slightly to moderately silty distal hemiturbiditic claystones; 3) weakly laminated, moderately silty to slightly sandy intermediate hemiturbiditic mudstones; and 4) very silty and sandy proximal hemiturbiditic mudstones. Hemipelagic and distal hemiturbiditic claystones (microfacies types 1 and 2) containing well to modestly organized fabric, high total clay contents, …
Desegregation And Multiculturalism In The Portland Public Schools, Ethan Johnson, Felicia Williams
Desegregation And Multiculturalism In The Portland Public Schools, Ethan Johnson, Felicia Williams
Black Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations
Helen Marie Casey’s booklet Portland’s Compromise: the Colored School, 1867–1872 recounts the story of William Brown, an African-American resident of Portland, Oregon, and his role in the first and only case of official segregation of African-American children in Portland Public Schools (PPS) in 1867. After unsuccessfully trying to enroll his children in one of Portland’s only two public elementary schools, Brown appealed to the school board, including directors Josiah Failing, W.S. Ladd, and E.D. Shattuck. Again, his children were denied access. The board of directors explained their resistance to integrated schools by saying: “If we admit them [African-American children], then …

Readiness For Lifelong Learning Of Volunteers Affiliated With A 4-H Youth Development Program In The Southern Region Of The United States, Kenneth Kimani Kungu
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to explore and determine the level of readiness for lifelong learning of volunteers affiliated with a 4-H youth development program in the southern United States. Based on a literature review, readiness for lifelong learning was conceptualized as incorporating aspects of response to triggers for learning, self-directed learning readiness, and a readiness to overcome deterrents to participation in learning. The Readiness for Lifelong Learning Survey, a 75 item Likert-type scale, was developed and administered online to 1815 adult volunteers who had provided usable emails in a enrollment database system. The final response count was 277 …
