Local And Traditional Knowledge And The Historical Ecology Of Pacific Herring In Alaska, Thomas F. Thornton, Madonna L. Moss, Virginia L. Butler, Jamie Hebert, Fritz Funk

Anthropology Faculty Publications and Presentations

The article focuses on the historical ecology of the Pacific herring, a marine food web resource, in the Gulf of Alaska. It states the hearing conducted by the Alaska Legislature's House special committee on fisheries on the status and management of herring in Southeast Alaska during which Tlingit fisherman Clarence Jackson of Kake notes the disappearance of herring in his lifetime. Information on herring ecology based from Native and non-Native individuals from Southeast communities and archaeological site reports reveal that non-Natives in Southeast Alaska have exploited herring with the development of a herring reduction plant. It underscores the need for …

Archaeological Evidence For Resilience Of Pacific Northwest Salmon Populations And The Socioecological System Over The Last ~7,500 Years, Sarah K. Campbell, Virginia L. Butler Jan 2010

Archaeological Evidence For Resilience Of Pacific Northwest Salmon Populations And The Socioecological System Over The Last ~7,500 Years, Sarah K. Campbell, Virginia L. Butler

Anthropology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Archaeological data on the long history of interaction between indigenous people and salmon have rarely been applied to conservation management. When joined with ethnohistoric records, archaeology provides an alternative conceptual view of the potential for sustainable harvests and can suggest possible social mechanisms for managing human behavior. Review of the ~7,500-year-long fish bone record from two subregions of the Pacific Northwest shows remarkable stability in salmon use. As major changes in the ecological and social system occurred over this lengthy period, persistence in the fishery is not due simply to a lack of perturbation, but rather indicates resilience in the …

Furthermore, preliminary study is done for the application of APS (Air Plasma Spray) to SOFC and adhesion of anode and cathode with electrolytes for the determination of parameters involved in manufacturing the …

The Psychology Of Good Character, Alice Woolley, Jocelyn Stacey Jan 2010

The Psychology Of Good Character, Alice Woolley, Jocelyn Stacey

All Faculty Publications

This paper explores the significance of the changing nature of the good character requirement for law society admission in Canada. It posits that good character has shifted from a philosophical concept into a psychological concept, with evidence of past bad acts claimed to be relevant for whether an applicant represents a future risk to the public. This shifting conception of character has, however, been only partial, and the decision-making processes of Canadian law societies have not kept pace with it. Instead, the decision-making process defines character generally and generically, with only occasional emphasis on character as a relevant predictor of …

Power Series Expansions For Waves In High-Contrast Plasmonic Crystals, Santiago Prado Parentes Fortes Jan 2010

Power Series Expansions For Waves In High-Contrast Plasmonic Crystals, Santiago Prado Parentes Fortes

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

In this thesis, a method is developed for obtaining convergent power series expansions for dispersion relations in two-dimensional periodic media with frequency dependent constitutive relations. The method is based on high-contrast expansions in the parameter _x0011_ = 2_x0019_d=_x0015_, where d is the period of the crystal cell and _x0015_ is the wavelength. The radii of convergence obtained are not too small, on the order of _x0011_ _x0019_ 10􀀀2. That the method applies to frequency dependent media is an important fact, since the majority of the methods available in the literature are restricted to frequency independent constitutive relations. The convergent series …

Athens And Byzantium: Platonic Political Philosophy In Religious Empire, Jeremiah Heath Russell Jan 2010

Athens And Byzantium: Platonic Political Philosophy In Religious Empire, Jeremiah Heath Russell

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

It is traditionally understood that there is a gap, which spans well over one thousand years, between Plato’s own political philosophy and its successor in medieval Islamic philosophy. A most likely bridge between Plato and these later philosophers is Neoplatonism. However, scholars argue that this philosophic school abandoned its predecessor’s emphasis on political philosophy. This dissertation challenges the traditional interpretation by reconstructing a political philosophy based on a Neoplatonic commentary on Plato’s Gorgias. The first two chapters place this commentary within its historical context, as well as its place within the larger Neoplatonic pedagogy. The remainder of the dissertation reconstructs …

Positron Autoradiography For Intravascular Vulnerable Plaque Imaging, Peter Petrek Jan 2010

Positron Autoradiography For Intravascular Vulnerable Plaque Imaging, Peter Petrek

LSU Master's Theses

Purpose: To develop and investigate an intravascular storage phosphor detector for imaging and detection of vulnerable coronary artery plaques. Methods: The concept of the detection of vulnerable plaques (i.e., plaques with inflammation) is based on accumulation of fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) in inflammation sites. The FDG is labeled with a radioactive isotope 18F (positron source), injected to patient, and accumulated in vulnerable plaques of coronary arteries. The radiation detector is then inserted into coronary artery, records positrons from FDG accumulated in vulnerable plaque, which allows for imaging and detection of the vulnerable plaque. A prototype detector was developed and tested. The detector …

Microfluidic Devices Interfaced To Matrix-Assisted Laser Desorption/Ionization Mass Spectrometry For Proteomics, Jeonghoon Lee Jan 2010

Microfluidic Devices Interfaced To Matrix-Assisted Laser Desorption/Ionization Mass Spectrometry For Proteomics, Jeonghoon Lee

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Microfluidic interfaces were developed for off-line matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry (MALDI). Microfluidic interfaces allow samples to be manipulated on-chip and deposited onto a MALDI target plate for analysis. For this research, microfluidic culturing devices and automated digestion and deposition microfluidic chip platforms were developed for the identification of proteins. The microfluidic chip components were fabricated on a poly(methyl methacrylate), PMMA, wafer using the hot embossing method and a molding tool with structures prepared via micromilling. One of the most important components of the chip system was a trypsin microreactor. An open channel microreactor was constructed in a 100 µm …

The Impact Of Hurricanes Katrina And Rita On The Louisiana Judicial System, Charles Simon Mccowan, Iii Jan 2010

The Impact Of Hurricanes Katrina And Rita On The Louisiana Judicial System, Charles Simon Mccowan, Iii

LSU Master's Theses

This thesis is a case study of the impact of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita on the Louisiana court system and the response of the court system to the aftermath of these two hurricanes. Although this thesis focuses on one state’s court system’s response to two natural disasters, the research, conclusions and recommendations are transferable to other states. Hurricanes Katrina and Rita struck the Gulf Coast in 2005 devastating large areas in Louisiana, Texas, Mississippi and Alabama. Millions of people, including judges and attorneys, were forced to evacuate their homes, courts and law offices. The Hurricanes caused interruptions to both federal …

Modeling Thermal Phenomena And Searching For New Thermally Induced Monitor Signals In Large Sale Gravitational Wave Detectors, Rupal Shashikant Amin Jan 2010

Modeling Thermal Phenomena And Searching For New Thermally Induced Monitor Signals In Large Sale Gravitational Wave Detectors, Rupal Shashikant Amin

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory (LIGO) array’s 4 km detectors have transitioned from an initial configuration (iLIGO) to an enhanced configuration (eLIGO) [1]. Both configurations relied on high circulating laser powers to achieve sensitivity goals between 150 Hz and 8 kHz. These power levels were sufficient to induce thermally driven focal affects in the primary optics. Since the detectors were designed to achieve maximum sensitivity when laser light was optimally coupled (mode matched) into the antenna, small deviations in focal parameters influenced performance. A laser based thermal compensation system (TCS) was installed for use in both configurations to counteract excessive …

Optimal Control And Nonlinear Programming, Qingxia Li Jan 2010

Optimal Control And Nonlinear Programming, Qingxia Li

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

In this thesis, we have two distinct but related subjects: optimal control and nonlinear programming. In the first part of this thesis, we prove that the value function, propagated from initial or terminal costs, and constraints, in the form of a differential equation, satisfy a subgradient form of the Hamilton-Jacobi equation in which the Hamiltonian is measurable with respect to time. In the second part of this thesis, we first construct a concrete example to demonstrate conjugate duality theory in vector optimization as developed by Tanino. We also define the normal cones corresponding to Tanino's concept of the subgradient of …

Spatial Analyses Of Pedosphere Carbon Stock And Sequestration Potential In Louisiana's Watersheds, Biao Zhong Jan 2010

Spatial Analyses Of Pedosphere Carbon Stock And Sequestration Potential In Louisiana's Watersheds, Biao Zhong

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation research aimed to quantify current soil organic carbon (SOC) stocks across Louisiana’s landscape, examine the spatial relationships between SOC and terrain factors at the watershed and river basin scales, and predict SOC changes in surface soils during future climate change. Using Louisiana as an example, a spatially-explicit modeling framework was developed that is conducive to watershed-scale prediction of soil carbon stock and change. SOC densities at the watershed scale were estimated using the USDA NRCS Soil Geographic Database (STATSGO). Louisiana watersheds and National Land Cover Database (NLCD) were used to aggregate total soil carbon and estimate average soil …

Mass Transfer And Mergers In Double White Dwarf Binaries, Wesley Paul Even Jan 2010

Mass Transfer And Mergers In Double White Dwarf Binaries, Wesley Paul Even

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

We have developed a self consistent field (SCF) technique similar to the one described by Hachisu, Eriguchi, & Nomoto (1986b) that can be used to construct detailed force-balanced models of synchronously rotating, double white dwarf (DWD) binaries. This SCF technique can be used to construct model sequences that mimic the last portion of the detached inspiral phase of DWD binary evolutions, and semi-detached model sequences that mimic a phase of conservative mass transfer. In addition, the SCF models can be used to provide quiet initial starts for dynamical studies of the onset of mass transfer in DWD systems. We present …

Model Based Analysis Of Some High Speed Network Issues, Suman Kumar Jan 2010

Model Based Analysis Of Some High Speed Network Issues, Suman Kumar

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The study of complex problems in science and engineering today typically involves large scale data, huge number of large-scale scientific breakthroughs critically depends on large multi-disciplinary and geographically-dispersed research teams, where the high speed network becomes the integral part. To serve the ongoing bandwidth requirement and scalability of these networks, there has been a continuous evolution of different TCPs for high speed networks. Testing these protocols on a real network would be expensive, time consuming and more over not easily available to the researchers worldwide. Network simulation is well accepted and widely used method for performance evaluation, it is well …

Taphonomy And Sedimentology Of Two Miocene Vertebrate Fossil Sites On Fort Polk, Louisiana, Julie Lynn Hill Jan 2010

Taphonomy And Sedimentology Of Two Miocene Vertebrate Fossil Sites On Fort Polk, Louisiana, Julie Lynn Hill

LSU Master's Theses

The discovery of a terrestrial mammalian fauna in the Miocene deposits on Fort Polk, Louisiana, fills a geographic gap in the Gulf Coast paleontological framework, but the provenance of the fossils, nature of the depositional environments, and relationships between the sites is still debated. This is especially true for the TVOR site cluster. TVOR SE has a mixture of marine and terrestrial vertebrates in association with a partly dissolved, in situ bed of articulated oyster shells, which stands in contrast to the fully terrestrial and freshwater assemblage at TVOR, and the indeterminate site TVOR S. Although limited outcrop may bias …

The Population Of Sap And Tsap Isomers In Cyclen-Based Lanthanide(Iii) Chelates Is Substantially Affected By Solvent, Kyle J. Miller, Ali A. Saherwala, Benjamin C. Webber, Yunkou Wu, A. Dean Sherry, Mark Woods Jan 2010

The Population Of Sap And Tsap Isomers In Cyclen-Based Lanthanide(Iii) Chelates Is Substantially Affected By Solvent, Kyle J. Miller, Ali A. Saherwala, Benjamin C. Webber, Yunkou Wu, A. Dean Sherry, Mark Woods

Chemistry Faculty Publications and Presentations

The square antiprism/twisted square antiprism ratio in LnDOTA-tetraamide chelates is a critical parameter in governing water-exchange kinetics and ultimately the utility of a chelate as a PARACEST MRI contrast agent. In LnDOTA-tetraamide chelates with tertiary amides, this ratio and the rate of interconversion between these two structural isomers are found to be dramatically dependent upon the solvent and possibly other local environmental factors.

Polymeric Paracest Mri Contrast Agents As Potential Reporters For Gene Therapy, Yunkou Wu, Christiane E. Carney, Michael Denton, Elaine Hart, Piyu Zhao, Daniel N. Streblow, A. Dean Sherry, Mark Woods Jan 2010

Polymeric Paracest Mri Contrast Agents As Potential Reporters For Gene Therapy, Yunkou Wu, Christiane E. Carney, Michael Denton, Elaine Hart, Piyu Zhao, Daniel N. Streblow, A. Dean Sherry, Mark Woods

Chemistry Faculty Publications and Presentations

Gene therapy is a potentially powerful treatment approach that targets molecular remedies for disease. Among other challenges it remains difficult to monitor gene delivery and its downstream metabolic consequences. Approaches to MRI gene reporters have been reported but few have the potential for translation beyond isolated cell systems. Herein, we report a polycationic polymer MRI contrast agent that binds to DNA in a ratio of one monomer unit per phosphate group of DNA. Significantly, this binding event diminishes the MR contrast signal from the agent itself potentially providing a platform for imaging delivery and release of a gene into cells …

Cest And Paracest Mr Contrast Agents, Ileana Hancu, W. Thomas Dixon, Mark Woods, Elena Vinogradov, A. Dean Sherry, Robert E. Lenkinski

Chemistry Faculty Publications and Presentations

In this review we describe the status of development for a new class of magnetic resonance (MR) contrast agents, based on chemical exchange saturation transfer (CEST). The mathematics and physics relevant to the description of the CEST effect in MR are presented in an appendix published in the online version only. We discuss the issues arising when translating in vitro results obtained with CEST agents to using these MR agents in in vivo model studies and in humans. Examples are given on how these agents are imaged in vivo. We summarize the status of development of these CEST agents, and …

The Ornamentation Of Brunelleschi's Old Sacristy Of San Lorenzo In Florence, Jessica Lynne Clinton Jan 2010

The Ornamentation Of Brunelleschi's Old Sacristy Of San Lorenzo In Florence, Jessica Lynne Clinton

LSU Master's Theses

The Old Sacristy of San Lorenzo in Florence, Italy, was constructed during the years 1419-1428 and is considered one of the most influential buildings of the early Italian Renaissance. Brunelleschi's Old Sacristy, in its original design, was pristine and void of the architectural ornamentation that had come to characterize so many buildings that preceded it and which would come to be associated with the sacristy itself on account of later alterations. Indeed, the original sacristy was characterized by a purely articulated space free of additional ornamentation to the architecture. However, shortly after the termination of construction, the Old Sacristy became …

Synthesis And Characterization Of Rare Earth-Nickel-Gallium Ternary Intermetallics, Kandace R. Thomas Jan 2010

Synthesis And Characterization Of Rare Earth-Nickel-Gallium Ternary Intermetallics, Kandace R. Thomas

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The structural and physical characterization of several early and latter rare earth Ln-Ni-Ga systems, which include Ln2NiGa12 (Ln = Pr, Nd, Sm), alpha-LnNiGa4 (Ln = Y, Gd – Yb) and beta-LnNiGa4 (Ln = Tb – Ho) will be presented in this work. These systems are thermodynamically located within a copious, robust phase space and provide a rich understanding of how slight modifications to synthetic preparations can yield the adoption of different structure types in a Ga-rich regime. Each of these phases is made up of well-studied substructures which lend an additional angle of apperception as to how their structure and …

Non-Axisymmetric Instabilities In Self-Gravitating Tori Around Black Holes, And Solving Einstein Constraints With Superconvergent Finite Element Methods, Oleg Korobkin Jan 2010

Non-Axisymmetric Instabilities In Self-Gravitating Tori Around Black Holes, And Solving Einstein Constraints With Superconvergent Finite Element Methods, Oleg Korobkin

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This thesis contains results on two related projects. In the first project, we explore non-axisymmetric instabilities in general relativistic accretion disks around black holes. Such disks are created as transient structures in several astrophysical scenarios, including mergers of compact objects and core collapse of massive stars. These disks are suggested for the role of cenral engines of gamma-ray bursts. We address the stability of these objects against the runaway and non-axisymmetric instabilities in the three-dimensional hydrodynamical fully general relativistic treatment. We explore three slender and moderately slender disk models with varying disk-to-black hole mass ratio. None of the models that …

Pharmaceutical Compounds In Treatment Wetlands: Potential Removal And Effects On Microbial Processes, Jeremy Landon Conkle Jan 2010

Pharmaceutical Compounds In Treatment Wetlands: Potential Removal And Effects On Microbial Processes, Jeremy Landon Conkle

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

active compounds (PhACs) have been detected in the aquatic environment as a result of loading from various sources. In Louisiana, USA, many municipalities treat wastewater using natural systems, such as lagoons and wetlands, rather than using conventional wastewater treatment technologies and may discharge PhACs into the environment. These treatment systems are not designed to remove PhACs from wastewater, nor is it currently a regulatory requirement. Research on the fate of PhACs in the environment is needed to understand impacts on Louisiana’s important coastal system. Wastewater sampling for PhACs at the Mandeville, LA wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) determined that this system …

Studying And Teaching “Law As Rhetoric”: A Place To Stand, Linda L. Berger Jan 2010

Studying And Teaching “Law As Rhetoric”: A Place To Stand, Linda L. Berger

Scholarly Works

This article proposes that law students may find a better fit within the legal culture of argument if they are introduced to rhetorical alternatives to counter narrowly formalist and realist perspectives on how the law works and how judges decide cases. To support this proposal, the article describes and evaluates an upper-level elective course in Law & Rhetoric, which I have offered at two law schools since 2003.

The article makes a two-part argument: first, introducing law students to rhetorical alternatives allows them to envision their role as lawyers as constructive, effective, and imaginative while grounded in law, language, and …

Fraction Competency And Algebra Success, Coretta Thomas Jan 2010

Fraction Competency And Algebra Success, Coretta Thomas

LSU Master's Theses

Abstract In this thesis, I investigated the importance of fraction competence to success in algebra. I studied 107 of the students whom I teach. These students were all enrolled in Algebra I. A fraction pretest and an algebra pretest were given at the beginning of the 2009-2010 school year. A comparison was done to study the connection between the fraction pretest score and the semester grade as well as the algebra pretest score and the semester grade. The strongest correlation was between the fraction pretest and the semester grade. This supported the theory that fraction competence is a strong predictor …

The Influence Of Two Estrogens On The Sex And Ovarian Development Of Eastern Oysters (Crassostrea Virginica) Maintained In A Closed Recirculating System, Wesley Michael Burnside Jan 2010

The Influence Of Two Estrogens On The Sex And Ovarian Development Of Eastern Oysters (Crassostrea Virginica) Maintained In A Closed Recirculating System, Wesley Michael Burnside

LSU Master's Theses

As a multi-million dollar industry, production of the eastern oyster Crassostrea virginica is significant to the economy of the nation’s coastal regions. The cost of commercial oyster aquaculture has higher inputs than the oyster fishery, but larger, better quality oysters can be produced for culture by the stable availability of triploid individuals.

The goal of this project was to determine if the use of an estrogen, estradiol-17β or estradiol-3-benzoate, at a consistent environmental temperature would increase the percentage of females in a population, as well as ovarian development of eastern oysters. Ultimately, this could be applied to triploids to increase …

The Effects Of Channel Stability On Benthic Macroinvertebrates In Southeastern Louisiana Streams, Peter Markos Jan 2010

The Effects Of Channel Stability On Benthic Macroinvertebrates In Southeastern Louisiana Streams, Peter Markos

LSU Master's Theses

Water chemistry, habitat quality, and channel stability interact to influence a stream’s biological integrity. The goal of this project was to assess how channel stability, together with other physicochemical stream measurements, are associated with the structure and abundance of resident macroinvertebrate communities. I recorded multiple physicochemical parameters and calculated a Pfankuch habitat stability index monthly for a year at potential reference streams in southeastern Louisiana. I assessed the relationships of channels stability with measured physicochemical parameters with multiple regression and principle components analysis. Mixed model multivariate analysis of variance was used to determine associations of habitat characteristics with resident macroinvertebrate …

The Returns And Volatility Of Agribusiness Stocks: How Do They Measure Up To Non-Agribusiness Stocks?, Benjamin Michael Clark Jan 2010

The Returns And Volatility Of Agribusiness Stocks: How Do They Measure Up To Non-Agribusiness Stocks?, Benjamin Michael Clark

LSU Master's Theses

Little literature exists that analyzes the historical risk and return associated with investing in the US agricultural sector. However, several observable trends have recently made investing in the US agricultural sector an area of interest among investors. Stock price indexes are a commonly used tool for summarizing the historical performance of a specific sector. A market-capitalization weighted stock price index is created to represent the largest US agribusiness firms since 1970, using the US Census Standard Industrial Classification system and the Economic Research Service’s definition of agribusiness. Geometric returns, standard deviation, Sharpe Ratio, and beta values are calculated for one, …

Inter-Judge Sentencing Disparity After Booker: A First Look, Ryan W. Scott Jan 2010

Inter-Judge Sentencing Disparity After Booker: A First Look, Ryan W. Scott

Articles by Maurer Faculty

A central purpose of the Sentencing Reform Act was to reduce inter-judge sentencing disparity, driven not by legitimate differences between offenders and offense conduct, but by the philosophy, politics, or biases of the sentencing judge. The federal Sentencing Guidelines, despite their well-recognized deficiencies, succeeded in reducing that form of unwarranted disparity. But in a series of decisions from 2005 to 2007, the Supreme Court rendered the Guidelines advisory (Booker), set a highly deferential standard for appellate review (Gall), and explicitly authorized judges to reject the policy judgments of the Sentencing Commission (Kimbrough). Since then, the Commission has received extensive anecdotal …

Characterization Of Rock/Fluids Interactions At Reservoir Conditions, Dayanand Saini Jan 2010

Characterization Of Rock/Fluids Interactions At Reservoir Conditions, Dayanand Saini

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

In this study, interfacial phenomena of spreading, wettability, and rock/oil adhesion interactions in complex rock/oil/water systems were characterized at reservoir conditions of elevated pressures and temperatures. Capabilities of both ambient and reservoir condition optical cells were used for measuring the oil/water interfacial tension and dynamic (the water-receding and the water-advancing) contact angles for various complex rock/oil/water systems. Well known sessile oil drop volume alteration method was successfully used in this study for evaluating the applicability of the modified Young’s equation for characterizing the line tension in complex rock/oil/water systems at reservoir conditions. This appears to be first time when rock/fluids …

Integrating Lattice Space-Time Codes Of Highest Rank And Multiplexing Over Rayleigh Fading Channels, Vamshi Krishna Samudrala Jan 2010

Integrating Lattice Space-Time Codes Of Highest Rank And Multiplexing Over Rayleigh Fading Channels, Vamshi Krishna Samudrala

LSU Master's Theses

In this thesis, we consider the problem of finding an optimal combination of multiplexing and space-time coding over a MIMO array when a transmitter has a prior knowledge about correlation. Some existing work in this area used multiplexing and space-time coding methods as a technique to achieve capacity over a MIMO wireless channel. In this work, we consider a 2x2 lattice space-time code of highest rank and multiplex it over a MIMO system to improve the bit error rate performance. The main focus of this thesis is to address the problem of switching between spatial multiplexing and space-time coding to …
