Information Integration For Graph Databases, Ee Peng Lim, Aixin Sun, Anwitaman Datta, Chang Kuiyu Jan 2010

Information Integration For Graph Databases, Ee Peng Lim, Aixin Sun, Anwitaman Datta, Chang Kuiyu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

With increasing interest in querying and analyzing graph data from multiple sources, algorithms and tools to integrate different graphs become very important. Integration of graphs can take place at the schema and instance levels. While links among graph nodes pose additional challenges to graph information integration, they can also serve as useful features for matching nodes representing real-world entities. This chapter introduces a general framework to perform graph information integration. It then gives an overview of the state-of-the-art research and tools in graph information integration.

Bismuth(Iii) Bromide In Organic Synthesis. A Catalytic Method For The Allylation Of Tetrahydrofuranyl And Tetrahydropyranyl Ethers, Ram Mohan, Scott Krabbe, Veronica Angeles Jan 2010

Bismuth(Iii) Bromide In Organic Synthesis. A Catalytic Method For The Allylation Of Tetrahydrofuranyl And Tetrahydropyranyl Ethers, Ram Mohan, Scott Krabbe, Veronica Angeles

Scholarship

A bismuth bromide-catalyzed (10.0 mol %) multicomponent reaction involving the allylation of THF- and THP-ethers, followed by in situ derivatization with acetic anhydride to generate highly functionalized esters has been developed under solvent-free conditions. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of a catalytic procedure for the allylation of THF- and THP-ethers to yield ring-opened products.

Information Theoretic Approach For Assessing Image Fidelity In Photon-Counting Arrays, Srikanth R. Narravula, Majeed M. Hayat, Bahram Javidi Jan 2010

Information Theoretic Approach For Assessing Image Fidelity In Photon-Counting Arrays, Srikanth R. Narravula, Majeed M. Hayat, Bahram Javidi

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

The method of photon-counting integral imaging has been introduced recently for three-dimensional object sensing, visualization, recognition and classification of scenes under photon-starved conditions. This paper presents an information-theoretic model for the photon-counting imaging (PCI) method, thereby providing a rigorous foundation for the merits of PCI in terms of image fidelity. This, in turn, can facilitate our understanding of the demonstrated success of photon-counting integral imaging in compressive imaging and classification. The mutual information between the source and photon-counted images is derived in a Markov random field setting and normalized by the source-image’s entropy, yielding a fidelity metric that is between …

Bayesian Model Of The Dynamics Of Motion Integration In Smooth Pursuit And Plaid Perception, Kameliya Dimova Jan 2010

Bayesian Model Of The Dynamics Of Motion Integration In Smooth Pursuit And Plaid Perception, Kameliya Dimova

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

In this thesis, a model of motion integration is described which is based on a recursive Bayesian estimation process. The model displays a dynamic behaviour qualitatively similar to the dynamics of the motion integration process observed experimentally in smooth eye pursuit and plaid perception. The computer simulations of the model applied to smooth pursuit eye movements confirm the psychophysical data both in humans and monkeys, and the physiological data in monkeys. The temporal dynamics of motion integration is demonstrated together with its dependence on contrast, size of the stimulus and added noise. A new theoretical approach to explaining plaid perception …

Stability, Creation And Annihilation Of Charges In Gauge Theories, Anton Ilderton, Martin Lavelle, David Mcmullan Jan 2010

Stability, Creation And Annihilation Of Charges In Gauge Theories, Anton Ilderton, Martin Lavelle, David Mcmullan

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

We show how to construct physical, minimal energy states for systems of static and moving charges. These states are manifestly gauge invariant. For charge–anticharge systems we also construct states in which the gauge fields are restricted to a finite volume around the location of the matter fields. Although this is an excited state, it is not singular, unlike all previous finite volume descriptions. We use our states to model the processes of pair creation and annihilation.

Decomposition Of Fraud-Risk Assessments And Auditors’ Sensitivity To Fraud Cues*, T. Jeffrey Wilks, Mark F. Zimbelman Jan 2010

Decomposition Of Fraud-Risk Assessments And Auditors’ Sensitivity To Fraud Cues*, T. Jeffrey Wilks, Mark F. Zimbelman

Faculty Publications

Practitioners and regulators are concerned that when auditors perceive management’s attitude or character as indicative of low fraud risk, they are not sufficiently sensitive to high levels of incentive or opportunity risks in their overall fraud-risk assessments. In this study, we examine whether a fraud-triangle decomposition of fraud-risk assessments (that is, separately assessing attitude, opportunity, and incentive risks prior to assessing overall fraud risk) increases auditors’ sensitivity to opportunity and incentive cues when perceptions of management’s attitude suggest low fraud risk. In an experiment with 52 practicing audit managers, we find that auditors who decompose fraud-risk assessments are more sensitive …

Improved Method For The Determination Of Kinetic Parameters From Non-Isothermal Thermogravimetric Analysis (Tga) Data, Thomas H. Fletcher, James L. Hillier, Trent Bezzant Jan 2010

Improved Method For The Determination Of Kinetic Parameters From Non-Isothermal Thermogravimetric Analysis (Tga) Data, Thomas H. Fletcher, James L. Hillier, Trent Bezzant

Faculty Publications

Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) at a constant heating rate is a popular technique for characterizing reaction behavior. Determination of kinetic coefficients from suchTGAdata has given rise to a large range of reported activation energies for similar samples. In general, rate coefficients are determined using either a linearized integral method or a derivative method. A new method incorporating several well-known techniques is presented that avoids the problems with the linearized techniques as they are generally used. This paper compares results from the new method with results using either the integral or derivative method. Mathematically generated data were used with known kinetic parameters …

Experimental Measurements During Combustion Of Moist Individual Foliage Samples, Brent M. Pickett, Carl Isackson, Rebecca Wunder, Thomas H. Fletcher, Bret Buitler, David R. Weise Jan 2010

Experimental Measurements During Combustion Of Moist Individual Foliage Samples, Brent M. Pickett, Carl Isackson, Rebecca Wunder, Thomas H. Fletcher, Bret Buitler, David R. Weise

Faculty Publications

Individual samples of high moisture fuels from the western and southern United States and humidified aspen excelsior were burned over a flat-flame burner at 987◦ ±12 C and 10±0.5 mol% O2. Time-dependent mass and temperature profiles of these samples were obtained and analysed. It was observed that significant amounts of moisture remained in the individual samples after ignition occurred. Temperature histories showed a plateau at 200◦–300 C at the leaf perimeter rather than at 100 C, with a plateau of 140 C for the leaf interior. Implications are that classical combustion models should be altered to reflect the behaviour of …

A Categorical Semantics For Fuzzy Predicate Logic, Lawrence Stout Jan 2010

A Categorical Semantics For Fuzzy Predicate Logic, Lawrence Stout

Scholarship

The object of this study is to look at categorical approaches to many valued logic, both propositional and predicate, to see how different logical properties result from different parts of the situation. In particular, the relationship between the categorical fabric I introduced at Linz in 2004 and the Fuzzy Logics studied by Hajek (2003) [5], Esteva et al. (2003) [1], and Hajek (1998) [4], comes from restricting the kind of structures used for truth values. We see how the structure of the various kinds of algebras shows up in the categorical logic, giving a variant on natural deduction for these …

When Does A Category Built On A Lattice With A Monoidal Structure Have A Monoidal Structure?, Lawrence Stout Jan 2010

When Does A Category Built On A Lattice With A Monoidal Structure Have A Monoidal Structure?, Lawrence Stout

Scholarship

In a word, sometimes. And it gets harder if the structure on L is not commutative. In this paper we consider the question of what properties are needed on the lattice L equipped with an operation * for several different kinds of categories built using Sets and L to have monoidal and monoidal closed structures. This works best for the Goguen category Set(L) in which membership, but not equality, is made fuzzy and maps respect membership. Commutativity becomes critical if we make the equality fuzzy as well. This can be done several ways, so a progression of categories is considered. …

A Strategy For The Development Of Lifelong Learning And Personal Skills Throughout An Undergraduate Engineering Pogramme, Gavin Duffy, Brian Bowe Jan 2010

A Strategy For The Development Of Lifelong Learning And Personal Skills Throughout An Undergraduate Engineering Pogramme, Gavin Duffy, Brian Bowe

Conference papers

For many years engineering programmes have placed a stronger emphasis on the development of technical knowledge, understanding and skills at the expense of personal skills such as initiative, creativity, communication, teamwork and lifelong self-directed learning. Recent changes in accreditation criteria call for greater competences in these skills to be achieved in the undergraduate programme. An argument is presented that this requires a change from the traditional approach to engineering education to a group-based project driven one as this is compatible with concurrent development of both technical and non-technical learning outcomes. Just as a clear path of progression exists from the …

On The Applications Of Deterministic Chaos For Encrypting Data On The Cloud, Jonathan Blackledge, Nikolai Ptitsyn Jan 2010

On The Applications Of Deterministic Chaos For Encrypting Data On The Cloud, Jonathan Blackledge, Nikolai Ptitsyn

Conference papers

Cloud computing is expected to grow considerably in the future because it has so many advantages with regard to sale and cost, change management, next generation architectures, choice and agility. However, one of the principal concerns for users of the Cloud is lack of control and above all, data security. This paper considers an approach to encrypting information before it is ‘place’ on the Cloud where each user has access to their own encryption algorithm, an algorithm that is based on a set of Iterative Function Systems that outputs a chaotic number stream, designed to produce a cryptographically secure cipher. …

E-Fraud Prevention Based On The Self-Authentication Of E-Documents, Jonathan Blackledge, Eugene Coyle Jan 2010

E-Fraud Prevention Based On The Self-Authentication Of E-Documents, Jonathan Blackledge, Eugene Coyle

Conference papers

We consider a method for preventing e-Fraud in which a binary image is encrypted with a floating point cipher using a convolution operation and the output quantized into a 1-bit array generating a binary image ciphertext. The output is then ‘embedded’ in a host image to hide the encrypted information. Embedding is undertaken either in the lowest 1-bit layer or multiple 1-bit layers. Decryption is accomplished by: (i) extracting the binary image from the host image; (ii) correlating the result with the original cipher. In principle, any cipher generator can be used for this purpose and the method has been …

Economic Risk Assessment Using The Fractal Market Hypothesis, Jonathan Blackledge, Marek Rebow Jan 2010

Economic Risk Assessment Using The Fractal Market Hypothesis, Jonathan Blackledge, Marek Rebow

Conference papers

This paper considers the Fractal Market Hypothesi (FMH) for assessing the risk(s) in developing a financial portfolio based on data that is available through the Internet from an increasing number of sources. Most financial risk management systems are still based on the Efficient Market Hypothesis which often fails due to the inaccuracies of the statistical models that underpin the hypothesis, in particular, that financial data are based on stationary Gaussian processes. The FMH considered in this paper assumes that financial data are non-stationary and statistically self-affine so that a risk analysis can, in principal, be applied at any time scale …

Authentication Of Biometric Features Using Texture Coding For Id Cards, Jonathan Blackledge, Eugene Coyle Jan 2010

Authentication Of Biometric Features Using Texture Coding For Id Cards, Jonathan Blackledge, Eugene Coyle

Conference papers

The use of image based information exchange has grown rapidly over the years in terms of both e-to-e image storage and transmission and in terms of maintaining paper documents in electronic form. Further, with the dramatic improvements in the quality of COTS (Commercial-Off-The-Shelf) printing and scanning devices, the ability to counterfeit electronic and printed documents has become a widespread problem. Consequently, there has been an increasing demand to develop digital watermarking techniques which can be applied to both electronic and printed images (and documents) that can be authenticated, prevent unauthorized copying of their content and, in the case of printed …

Encryption Using Deterministic Chaos, Jonathan Blackledge, Nikolai Ptitsyn Jan 2010

Encryption Using Deterministic Chaos, Jonathan Blackledge, Nikolai Ptitsyn

Articles

The concepts of randomness, unpredictability, complexity and entropy form the basis of modern cryptography and a cryptosystem can be interpreted as the design of a key-dependent bijective transformation that is unpredictable to an observer for a given computational resource. For any cryptosystem, including a Pseudo-Random Number Generator (PRNG), encryption algorithm or a key exchange scheme, for example, a cryptanalyst has access to the time series of a dynamic system and knows the PRNG function (the algorithm that is assumed to be based on some iterative process) which is taken to be in the public domain by virtue of the Kerchhoff-Shannon …

An Optical Machine Vision System For Applications In Cytopathology, Jonathan Blackledge, Dmitry Dubovitskiy Jan 2010

An Optical Machine Vision System For Applications In Cytopathology, Jonathan Blackledge, Dmitry Dubovitskiy

Articles

This paper discusses a new approach to the processes of object detection, recognition and classification in a digital image focusing on problem in Cytopathology. A unique self learning procedure is presented in order to incorporate expert knowledge. The classification method is based on the application of a set of features which includes fractal parameters such as the Lacunarity and Fourier dimension. Thus, the approach includes the characterisation of an object in terms of its fractal properties and texture characteristics. The principal issues associated with object recognition are presented which include the basic model and segmentation algorithms. The self-learning procedure for …

The Effects Of Harmonics On Power Quality And Energy Efficiency, Alan Harrison Jan 2010

The Effects Of Harmonics On Power Quality And Energy Efficiency, Alan Harrison

Other resources

By making our electricity supply more secure, reliable and versatile will mean that we reduce our reliance upon oil, gas and solid fuels, which mostly exist outside of Ireland and the European community. The majority of our fuel is imported and this makes our economy dependent on outside interests and out of our control. Even more importantly as the world’s fossil fuel reserves are running out and electricity demand is ever increasing.

If we make our electricity networks secure and designed to the highest standards we can import and export electrical energy more easily as our demands change, for example …

The Fractal Market Hypothesis: Applications To Financial Forecasting, Jonathan Blackledge Jan 2010

The Fractal Market Hypothesis: Applications To Financial Forecasting, Jonathan Blackledge

Other resources

Most financial modelling systems rely on an underlying hypothesis known as the Efficient Market Hypothesis (EMH) including the famous Black-Scholes formula for placing an option. However, the EMH has a fundamental flaw: it is based on the assumption that economic processes are normally distributed and it has long been known that this is not the case. This fundamental assumption leads to a number of shortcomings associated with using the EMH to analyse financial data which includes failure to predict the future volatility of a market share value. This book introduces a new financial risk assessment model based on Levy statistics …

A Study Of Friction Testing Methods Applicable To Demoulding Force Prediction For Micro Replicated Parts, Kevin Delaney, David Kennedy, G. Bissacco Jan 2010

A Study Of Friction Testing Methods Applicable To Demoulding Force Prediction For Micro Replicated Parts, Kevin Delaney, David Kennedy, G. Bissacco

Conference Papers

For replication processes to be deemed successful it must be possible to remove the replicated parts from the tool after processing. With decreasing part and feature size the challenge of demoulding replicated parts increases since the resulting parts and replication tooling used are more delicate and can be easily damaged. Predictive demoulding force models can be used to optimise the part, tool and process parameters to maximise the likelihood of success. Developing accurate models for this process requires knowledge of the dominant interfacial contributions to friction and knowledge of the size scale at which the dominant contributions operate together with …

Demoulding Force Prediction For Micro Polymer Replication: A Review Of Relevant Literature, Kevin Delaney, G. Bissacco ., David Kennedy Jan 2010

Demoulding Force Prediction For Micro Polymer Replication: A Review Of Relevant Literature, Kevin Delaney, G. Bissacco ., David Kennedy

Conference Papers

Demoulding components without damage to either the components or tool is critical to successful replication processes. During tooling development designers strive to optimize replication tools to minimize demoulding force and resultant stress on replicated parts. A critical element of this process is an accurate demoulding force prediction model. Various models have been proposed to predict demoulding forces, each showing limitations in its applicability. This paper reviews existing demoulding force models and parameters affecting demoulding force for micro polymer replication.

Accounting Program Research Rankings By Topical Area And Methodology, Joshua G. Coyne, Scott L. Summers, Brady Williams, David A. Wood

Faculty Publications

This paper makes two novel contributions to ranking accounting research programs constructed from publication counts in top journals (AOS, Auditing, BRIA, CAR, JAE, JAR, JATA, JIS, JMAR, RAST, and TAR). In contrast to previous studies, we recognize the mobility of intellectual assets tied to the human capital of accounting researchers and therefore base our rankings on the researchers' current affiliations, rather than their affiliations at the time of publication. Also, we categorize each article written by topical area (auditing, financial, managerial, accounting information systems, tax, and other) and by methodology (analytical, archival, experimental, and other) and provide separate accounting program …

Good Codes From Generalised Algebraic Geometry Codes, M Jibril, M Tomlinson, Mz Ahmed, C Tjhai Jan 2010

Good Codes From Generalised Algebraic Geometry Codes, M Jibril, M Tomlinson, Mz Ahmed, C Tjhai

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

Algebraic geometry codes or Goppa codes are defined with places of degree one. In constructing generalised algebraic geometry codes places of higher degree are used. In this paper we present 41 new codes over F16 which improve on the best known codes of the same length and rate. The construction method uses places of small degree with a technique originally published over 10 years ago for the construction of generalised algebraic geometry codes. © 2010 IEEE.

Development Of A Panchromatic Acrylamide Based Photopolymer For Multicolour Reflection Holography, Chakrapani Meka, Raghavendra Jallapuram, Izabela Naydenova, Suzanne Martin, Vincent Toal

Articles

The development of a panchromatic acrylamide based photopolymer (ABP) for holographic recording application is presented. The scattering of the recording medium was characterised by measuring the Bidirectional Scattering Distribution Function (BSDF). The dynamic range in reflection mode of recording was evaluated by measuring the diffraction efficiencies of the holographic gratings recorded individually at 633nm, 532nm, and 473nm wavelengths at spatial frequencies of 4200 l/mm, 5000 l/mm and 5700 l/mm respectively. Spectral characterisation of the reflection gratings recorded using a combined single RGB beam was carried out and the reconstructed wavelengths were monitored and compared with the recording wavelengths. The recorded …
