In Vivo Oxidative Stress In Alzheimer Disease Brain And A Mouse Model Thereof: Effects Of Lipid Asymmetry And The Single Methionine Residue Of Amyloid-Β Peptide, Miranda Lu Bader Lange
University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations
Studies presented in this dissertation were conducted to gain more insight into the role of phospholipid asymmetry and amyloid-β (Aβ)-induced oxidative stress in brain of subjects with amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI) and Alzheimer disease (AD). AD is a largely sporadic, age-associated neurodegenerative disorder clinically characterized by the vast, progressive loss of memory and cognition commonly in populations over the age of ~65 years, with the exception of those with familial AD, which develop AD symptoms as early as ~30 years-old. Neuropathologically, both AD and FAD can be characterized by synapse and neuronal cell loss in conjunction with accumulation of …
Numerical Modeling Of The Dynamic Response Of A Multi-Bilinear-Spring Support System, Trey D. Gilliam
Numerical Modeling Of The Dynamic Response Of A Multi-Bilinear-Spring Support System, Trey D. Gilliam
University of Kentucky Master's Theses
The Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer is an International Space Station Experiment that features a unique nonlinear support system with no previous flight heritage. The experiment consists of multiple straps with piecewise-linear stiffness curves that support a cryogenic magnet in three-dimensional space inside of a vacuum chamber. The stiffness curves for each strap are essentially bilinear and switch between two distinct slopes at a specified displacement. This highly nonlinear support system poses many questions in regards to feasible computational methods of analysis and possible response behavior. This thesis develops a numerical model for a multi-bilinear-spring support system motivated by the Alpha Magnetic …

The Future Of Women In Aviation: Trends In Participation In Postsecondary Aviation Education, David C. Ison
Journal of Aviation/Aerospace Education & Research
The purpose of this research was to evaluate the trends in participation by women in postsecondary aviation programs in the United States both at the student and faculty levels. Data concerning the number of students who completed baccalaureate degrees in aviation was collected via the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS). It was found that 560 (10.5%) students among the 5,355 total that completed a degree in an aviation related field in 2007 were female. Also, of 434 full-time aviation faculty members employed at 74 different aviation programs meeting the criteria of this study, 35 (8.1%) were found to be …
Feasibility Of Using 15N-Enriched Escherichia Coli As A Bacterial Tracer In The Cane Run/Royal Spring Basin, Kentucky, John G. Warden
Feasibility Of Using 15N-Enriched Escherichia Coli As A Bacterial Tracer In The Cane Run/Royal Spring Basin, Kentucky, John G. Warden
University of Kentucky Master's Theses
A novel tracer method has used 15N to label Escherichia coli and track the transport of bacteria, a common contaminant, through karst aquifers. Use of this method could provide valuable insight into the movement of bacteria in aquifers, which would help improve remediation methods and strategies. A wild strain of E. coli was isolated from the Cane Run/Royal Spring basin in the Inner Bluegrass region of Kentucky. The strain was serotyped O-:H- and virulence testing showed the strain did not have virulence factors of E. coli commonly pathogenic to humans. Five karst microcosms were filled with …

We present a search for gravitational waves from 116 known millisecond and young pulsars using data from the fifth science run of the LIGO detectors. For this search, ephemerides overlapping the run period were obtained for all pulsars using radio and X-ray observations. We demonstrate an updated search method that allows for small uncertainties in the pulsar phase parameters to be included in the search. We report no signal detection from any of the targets and therefore interpret our results as upper limits on the gravitational wave signal strength. The most interesting limits are those for young pulsars. We present …

We present the results of a search for gravitational-wave bursts (GWBs) associated with 137 gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) that were detected by satellite-based gamma-ray experiments during the fifth LIGO science run and first Virgo science run. The data used in this analysis were collected from 2005 November 4 to 2007 October 1, and most of the GRB triggers were from the Swift satellite. The search uses a coherent network analysis method that takes into account the different locations and orientations of the interferometers at the three LIGO-Virgo sites. We find no evidence for GWB signals associated with this sample of GRBs. …

Radio pulsars emit regular bursts of radio radiation that propagate through the interstellar medium (ISM), the tenuous gas and plasma between the stars. Previously known dispersive properties of the ISM cause low-frequency pulses to be delayed in time with respect to high frequency ones. This effect can be explained by the presence of free electrons in the medium. The ISM also contains neutral hydrogen that has a well-known resonance at 1420.4 MHz. Electromagnetic theory predicts that at such a resonance, the induced dispersive effects will be drastically different from those of the free electrons. Pulses traveling through a cloud of …

Effects Of Α-Element Enhancement And The Thermally Pulsing-Asymptotic Giant Branch On Surface Brightness Fluctuation Magnitudes And Broadband Colors, Hyun Chul Lee, Guy Worthey, John P. Blakeslee
Physics & Astronomy Faculty Publications
We investigate the effects of α-element enhancement and the thermally pulsing-asymptotic giant branch (TP-AGB) stars on the surface brightness fluctuation (SBF) magnitudes and broadband colors of simple stellar populations and compare to the empirical calibrations. We consider a broad range of ages and metallicities using the recently updated Teramo BaSTI isochrones. We find that the α-element-enhanced I-band SBF magnitudes are about 0.35mag brighter and their integrated V - I colors are about 0.02mag redder, mostly because of oxygen-enhancement effects on the upper red giant branch and AGB. We also demonstrate, using both the Teramo BaSTI and Padova isochrones, the acute …

Given the importance of research findings and the potential of further research to aid in the prediction and control of impulsivity, the primary focus of this chapter (and this book) is on choice and the failure of future events to affect current decisions. In this primer chapter, we consider two types of impulsive choice: (a) preferring a smaller-sooner reward while forgoing a larger-later one and (b) preferring a larger-later aversive outcome over a smaller-sooner one. The first of these is exemplified by the toy-pilfering child with whom we opened this chapter. Taking the toy is immediately rewarded, but it is …

The Lisa Gravitational Wave Foreground: A Study Of Double White Dwarfs, Ashley J. Ruiter, Krzysztof Belczynski, Matthew Benacquista, Shane L. Larson, Gabriel Williams
Physics & Astronomy Faculty Publications
Double white dwarfs (WDs) are expected to be a source of confusion-limited noise for the future gravitational wave observatory LISA. In a specific frequency range, this \"foreground noise\" is predicted to rise above the instrumental noise and hinder the detection of other types of signals, e.g., gravitational waves arising from stellar-mass objects inspiraling into massive black holes. In many previous studies, only detached populations of compact object binaries have been considered in estimating the LISA gravitational wave foreground signal. Here, we investigate the influence of compact object detached and Roche-Lobe overflow (RLOF) Galactic binaries on the shape and strength of …
Particle Swarm Optimization And Gravitational Wave Data Analysis: Performance On A Binary Inspiral Testbed, Yan Wang, Soumya Mohanty
Particle Swarm Optimization And Gravitational Wave Data Analysis: Performance On A Binary Inspiral Testbed, Yan Wang, Soumya Mohanty
Physics & Astronomy Faculty Publications
The detection and estimation of gravitational wave signals belonging to a parameterized family of waveforms requires, in general, the numerical maximization of a data-dependent function of the signal parameters. Because of noise in the data, the function to be maximized is often highly multimodal with numerous local maxima. Searching for the global maximum then becomes computationally expensive, which in turn can limit the scientific scope of the search. Stochastic optimization is one possible approach to reducing computational costs in such applications. We report results from a first investigation of the particle swarm optimization method in this context. The method is …

We present results from an all-sky search for unmodeled gravitational-wave bursts in the data collected by the LIGO, GEO 600 and Virgo detectors between November 2006 and October 2007. The search is performed by three different analysis algorithms over the frequency band 50–6000 Hz. Data are analyzed for times with at least two of the four LIGO-Virgo detectors in coincident operation, with a total live time of 266 days. No events produced by the search algorithms survive the selection cuts. We set a frequentist upper limit on the rate of gravitational-wave bursts impinging on our network of detectors. When combined …

Information Apprenticeship: Integrating Faith And Learning In The Library, Dean M. Riley
The Christian Librarian
Librarianship is built on information. As we proceed further into the 21st century, librarians need to understand the concept of “information” as it cannot be easily defined. This paper presents a brief overview of information theory and reviews several concepts proposed by non-librarians. Also, these ideas, when viewed from a Christian perspective can help our understanding of “information.” A review of related scriptures is also included.

The corrosion behavior of electrochemically deposited copper thin films in deaerated and non-deaerated commercial cleaning solution containing HF has been investigated. Thin-film copper dissolution and reaction kinetics were investigated by monitoring Cu2+ , employing inductively coupled plasma–mass spectroscopy, and the oxidation states of copper on Si wafer surface, employing X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. It was determined that the reaction kinetics is first order with respect to both HF and oxygen concentrations. A kinetic scheme involving reduction of oxygen and oxidation of Cu0 and Cu1+ is proposed, which is consistent with the experimentally determined reaction kinetic orders and the …

The applicability of silica gel, modified with ketoimine groups, to solid phase extraction (SPE) was tested. Basic characteristics of the modified silica were determined using elemental analysis, and ^{29}Si CP MAS NMR spectroscopy, as well as measurement of specific surface area. Some applications of the sorbent studied to preconcentration and further determination of organic compounds, such as benzene, phenol, and o-chlorophenol, by means of solid-phase extraction (SPE) and gas chromatography are presented. The determined recovery rates were about 95%-98%.

Turkish Journal of Chemistry
Gold nanoparticles supported on zinc oxide nanoparticles were synthesized at several pH levels via the deposition-precipitation (DP) method. The effects of pH on gold loading, particle size, and particle size distribution on the support were studied at the iso-electric point (IEP) as well as below and above the IEP of ZnO. The addition of the support significantly changed the pH of the solution. The effects of adjusting the pH before and after the addition of the support into the gold chloride solution were also investigated. Gold particles with diameters of less than 5 nm were obtained. The results revealed that …

Turkish Journal of Chemistry
Superabsorbent polymers are obtained by the graft copolymerization of 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropanesul- fonic acid (AMPS) monomer onto collagen, using ammonium persulfate as a free radical initiator in the presence of methylene bisacrylamide as a crosslinker. Infrared spectroscopy and TGA thermal analysis were carried out to confirm the chemical structure of the hydrogel. Moreover, morphology of the samples was examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The effect of reaction variables on swelling capacity was investigated to achieve a hydrogel with improved water absorbency. Under the optimized conditions concluded, maximum capacity of swelling in distilled water was found to be 268 g/g. The swelling …

N-{[(4-bromophenyl)amino]carbonothioyl}benzamide was synthesized and characterized by IR, ^1H- and ^{13}C-NMR, mass spectrometry, and elemental analysis. The crystal structure was determined from single crystal X-ray diffraction data. It crystallizes in monoclinic space group P2_1/n with unit cell dimensions a = 13.822(3) Å, b = 5.927(2) Å, c = 16.642(3) Å, and \beta = 103.963(3)°. There is a strong intramolecular hydrogen bond of the type N__H \Lambda O, with an H\Lambda O distance of 2.6129 (11) Å. The mass fragmentation pattern is also discussed.
