An Underwater Channel Model And Chirp Slope Keying Modulation Scheme Performance, Brice Zoh
An Underwater Channel Model And Chirp Slope Keying Modulation Scheme Performance, Brice Zoh
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Chirp-Slope Keying (CSK) is a new and innovative digital modulation scheme for underwater data transmission. The underwater environment brings up several challenges to the manufacturing and operation of communication systems. This thesis shows through analysis and simulations the effectiveness of Chirp-Slope Keying (CSK) in providing a satisfying performance in underwater communication. The experiment consists of modulating a chirp slope by binary numbers (representing our data). '0' is represented by a linear- down chirp and '1' is represented by a linear-up chirp. The received data is first processed by a correlator receiver. Then, the detection of either binary symbol is obtained …
An Examination Of Faculty Satisfaction At Two-Year Higher Education Institutions, Nancy Kinchen
An Examination Of Faculty Satisfaction At Two-Year Higher Education Institutions, Nancy Kinchen
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Part-time faculty members represent the majority of faculty at public two-year postsecondary institutions. Utilizing part-time faculty enables two-year institutions to control their instructional costs and maintain scheduling flexibility. However, part-time faculty are diverse in regards to their employment preference, some prefer part-time employment while others would prefer a full-time position. Since retaining and attracting qualified and experienced part-time faculty members is essential, it is imperative that their satisfaction be understood. This study uses the 2004 National Study of Postsecondary Faculty (NSOPF: 04) to study faculty satisfaction. Faculty was disaggregated according to employment preference into full-time, involuntary part-time, and voluntary part-time …
Retention And Graduation Rates As Performance Indicators In 2-Year And 4-Year Postsecondary Institutions, Lisa Watson
Retention And Graduation Rates As Performance Indicators In 2-Year And 4-Year Postsecondary Institutions, Lisa Watson
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
The focus of this dissertation is on performance indicators – specifically, retention and graduation indicators - that impact allocation of the ever-dwindling public sources of money. Decreasing revenue trends make understanding the performance indicators that are often used to fund postsecondary institutions very important. There is a significant amount of literature on funding, types of funding, and performance indicators used in funding; however, there is very little literature on quantitative differences on standard performance indicators in 2-year and 4- year postsecondary institutions. The purpose of this study is to look at retention and graduation rates for part-time and full-time students …

Analysis Of A Queueing Model With Service Threshold, Kathryn Graf
Analysis Of A Queueing Model With Service Threshold, Kathryn Graf
Theses
We study a variation of the M/G/1 queueing model in which service time of customers is modified depending on the class to which the customers belong. Specifically, apart from the regular service time, we consider different service times for every customer who starts service after an idle and also for every (m+1)st customer. The model represents situations such as when the system requires a warm up time from a cold start (i.e.) after being idle for some time and also a system that is taken down at regular intervals perhaps for maintenance. Such systems come under the general class of …
A Note On Solid Coloring Of Pure Simplicial Complexes, Joseph O'Rourke
A Note On Solid Coloring Of Pure Simplicial Complexes, Joseph O'Rourke
Computer Science: Faculty Publications
We establish a simple generalization of a known result in the plane. The simplices in any pure simplicial complex in Rd may be colored with d+1 colors so that no two simplices that share a (d-1)-facet have the same color. In R2 this says that any planar map all of whose faces are triangles may be 3-colored, and in R3 it says that tetrahedra in a collection may be "solid 4-colored" so that no two glued face-to-face receive the same color.
Ecology Of Prince Of Wales Spruce Grouse, Aleya R. Nelson
Ecology Of Prince Of Wales Spruce Grouse, Aleya R. Nelson
Biological Sciences
Recently, spruce grouse on Prince of Wales Island (POW) in southeast Alaska have been proposed as a separate subspecies. Furthermore, life-history of spruce grouse on POW, which is temperate coastal rainforest, varies sufficiently from birds in mainland areas, mostly boreal forest, to warrant specific management. Therefore, I examined the ecology of spruce grouse on POW to determine how timber harvest influences their survival and habitat selection and ultimately to provide recommendations for their conservation. During 2007-2009, we found that the greatest variation in survival probability was attributed to breeding status. The annual survival of non-breeding birds was 0.72±0.082 (S±) while …
Movies Of Electrons In Atoms, Michael Schirber, Hua-Chieh Shao, Anthony F. Starace
Movies Of Electrons In Atoms, Michael Schirber, Hua-Chieh Shao, Anthony F. Starace
Anthony F. Starace Publications
Physicists have long been able to snap atomic-scale pictures by shining a beam of electrons at a target, but filming the electronic structure of an atom as it changes in time is the next goal. A rapid "strobing" of electron pulses less than a millionth of a billionth of a second long should do the trick, according to a theoretical analysis in the 24 December Physical Review Letters. The authors demonstrate with computer simulations that ultrafast electron pulses could track the "breathing" state of an excited atom or the hopping of electrons between atoms in a molecule. Such movies open …
The Effect Of Raters And Rating Conditions On The Reliability Of The Missionary Teaching Assessment, Abigail Christine Ure
The Effect Of Raters And Rating Conditions On The Reliability Of The Missionary Teaching Assessment, Abigail Christine Ure
Theses and Dissertations
This study investigated how 2 different rating conditions, the controlled rating condition (CRC) and the uncontrolled rating condition (URC), effected rater behavior and the reliability of a performance assessment (PA) known as the Missionary Teaching Assessment (MTA). The CRC gives raters the capability to manipulate (pause, rewind, fast-forward) video recordings of an examinee's performance as they rate while the URC does not give them this capability (i.e., the rater must watch the recording straight through without making any manipulations). Few studies have compared the effect of these two rating conditions on ratings. Ryan et al. (1995) analyzed the impact of …
The Effects Of Using Clinical Support Tools To Prevent Treatment Failure, Tiffany K. Washington
The Effects Of Using Clinical Support Tools To Prevent Treatment Failure, Tiffany K. Washington
Theses and Dissertations
To date, outcome research suggests that providing clinicians with patient progress feedback and problem-solving tools is effective in improving therapeutic outcome for clients who are predicted to have a negative treatment outcome. To expand upon this body of research, the current study examined the efficacy of using these problem-solving tools (Clinical Support Tools; CST) to reduce the risk of treatment failure and enhance positive outcome with 118 clients who were not identified as at -risk for a negative outcome. Results of this study indicated that the intervention failed to lower the rate of becoming an at-risk case or to enhance …
Essay On The Persistence Of Corporate Diversification Discount After Merger And Acquisition Transactions And Essay On The Capital Structure Properties Of Real Estate Investment Trusts (Reits), Yasser Alhenawi
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
In the first chapter of this dissertation, I hypothesize that several non-tax-driven benefits of debt induce REITs managers to issue debt despite no apparent tax-driven benefit. Several methodologies and tests applied in capital structure literature are introduced to the literature of REITs capital structure. First, I investigate how the market prices leverage in absence of tax-deductibility benefit. Then, I diagnose the relative importance of several non-tax-driven benefits of leverage in deriving the capital structure decisions of REITs. Third, I conduct a thought investment experiment with debt-restricted vs. non-restricted REITs portfolios. I find weak evidence that leverage, by itself, creates value. …
The Relationship Between Professional Identity And Collective Self- Esteem In School Counselors, Susan Foster
The Relationship Between Professional Identity And Collective Self- Esteem In School Counselors, Susan Foster
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
All bona fide professions have affiliated professional organizations, ethical standards or a code of ethics, and an accrediting and sanctioning body that deals with preparation, credentialing, and licensure, and pride in one's profession (Gale & Austin, 2003; Remley & Herlihy, 2010). As school counseling continues to evolve, school counselors have struggled to define and maintain their role. This may be due, in part, to the social desirability an individual has to belong to dominant group in the school setting (Tajfel, 1986). School counselors may draw esteem from their professional membership. This concept, called collective self-esteem, denotes those aspects of identity …
Pattern Recognition Of Power Systems Voltage Stability Using Real Time Simulations, Nagendrakumar Beeravolu
Pattern Recognition Of Power Systems Voltage Stability Using Real Time Simulations, Nagendrakumar Beeravolu
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
The basic idea deals with detecting the voltage collapse ahead of time to provide the operators a lead time for remedial actions and for possible prevention of blackouts. To detect cases of voltage collapse, we shall create methods using pattern recognition in conjunction with real time simulation of case studies and shall develop heuristic methods for separating voltage stable cases from voltage unstable cases that result in response to system contingencies and faults. Using Real Time Simulator in Entergy-UNO Power & Energy Research Laboratory, we shall simulate several contingencies on IEEE 39-Bus Test System and compile the results in two …
An Implementation Of A Numerical Advection Equation Solver On Modern Graphics Cards Using Compute Unified Device Architecture, Wei Dang
Engineering
"In the past decade, the Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) is reported to have become a powerful general-purpose computation platform for various application areas. The Arctic Region Supercomputing Center (ARSC) intends to assess the capability of this emerging computing tool so that they may enlist it as component of supercomputing systems, but at a lower cost. This thesis reports on parallelization, on both GPU and CPU, of a numerical algorithm named the Total Variation Diminishing (TVD) scheme, which is used in the Eulerian Polar Parallel Ionospheric Model (EPPIM) developed at UAF's Geophysical Institute (GI) and ARSC. The GPU (single NVIDIA Tesla® …
Characterization And Fluid Flow Properties Of Frozen Rock Systems Of Umiat Oil Field, Alaska, Vasil Godabrelidze
Characterization And Fluid Flow Properties Of Frozen Rock Systems Of Umiat Oil Field, Alaska, Vasil Godabrelidze
Engineering
The Umiat field, located in northwestern Alaska between the Brooks Range and the Arctic Ocean, potentially contains the largest accumulation of oil in Naval Petroleum Reserve No.4. Most of the oil is found within the permafrost zone. The main oil-producing zones in the Umiat field are marine sandstones in the Grandstand Formation of the Cretaceous Nanushuk group. Although the temperatures are close to freezing, the oil in the Umiat field remains unfrozen due to its very high API gravity. However, this results in a very unique pore space containing frozen water and oil, posing a particular challenge to characterization and …
North Atlantic Air-Sea Interactions Driven By Atmospheric And Oceanic Stochastic Forcing In A Simple Box Model, Rebecca Anne Legatt
North Atlantic Air-Sea Interactions Driven By Atmospheric And Oceanic Stochastic Forcing In A Simple Box Model, Rebecca Anne Legatt
Atmospheric Sciences
"North Atlantic (NA) variability has wide-spread implications locally and globally. This study investigates mechanisms driving NA variability using a simple box model incorporating time evolution of interacting upper ocean temperature anomalies, horizontal (Gyre) and vertical (meridional overturning circulation, or MOC) circulation, driven by surface air temperature, wind, and Labrador Sea temperature forcings. Simulated upper ocean responses to external atmospheric forcing result in solutions with redder spectra than solutions by white noise atmospheric forcing, implying that the ocean acts as a low-pass filter to this external forcing. Simulated ocean dynamic response may be viewed as a response to a cumulative atmospheric …
Crisis: Capitalism, Economics And The Environment, Raj Navanit Patel Mr
Crisis: Capitalism, Economics And The Environment, Raj Navanit Patel Mr
Undergraduate Economic Review
The basic thesis of this paper is that there is an undeniable tension between maximization of individual welfare and a sustainable and healthy environment in a finite world. Following from this, the further claim is that our current capitalist system of private production and ownership is fundamentally in tension with the environment and should be changed. Without a change in attitude toward our conceptualization of these problems, that is, without contextualizing these problems outside of the market-based solutions and free market solutions, crisis is inevitable. Homo economicus needs to be replaced by homo environmentus.
Scanning Laser Registration And Structural Energy Density Based Active Structural Acoustic Control, Daniel Alan Manwill
Scanning Laser Registration And Structural Energy Density Based Active Structural Acoustic Control, Daniel Alan Manwill
Theses and Dissertations
To simplify the measurement of energy-based structural metrics, a general registration process for the scanning laser doppler vibrometer (SLDV) has been developed. Existing registration techniques, also known as pose estimation or position registration, suffer from mathematical complexity, instrument specificity, and the need for correct optimization initialization. These difficulties have been addressed through development of a general linear laser model and hybrid registration algorithm. These are applicable to any SLDV and allow the registration problem to be solved using straightforward mathematics. Additionally, the hybrid registration algorithm eliminates the need for correct optimization initialization by separating the optimization process from solution selection. …

Reconciling Motor Performance Indicators From Theoretical Calculations And Laboratory Tests, Himanshu Hirlekar, Badrul H. Chowdhury, Stephen Ruffing
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Quite often because of the complexity in the design of large industrial motors, the theoretical motor parameter calculations do not match actual results from laboratory tests. Thus, it becomes important to predict the amount of discrepancy between the two methods to develop confidence in the motor parameter calculations. This paper discusses the development of multiple artificial neural networks (ANNs) designed to predict the ratios of measured parameters to calculated parameters, given the geometry and construction of the motor. These ratios represent correction factors which can be applied to the values calculated from the theoretical program, which, in this case, is …

Relating Deep Magmatic Processes To Eruptive Behavior At Arc Volcanoes Through An Analysis Of Deep Seismicity, Ophelia A. George
Relating Deep Magmatic Processes To Eruptive Behavior At Arc Volcanoes Through An Analysis Of Deep Seismicity, Ophelia A. George
Geosciences
"In this thesis, the seismicity at depths greater than 15 km beneath two sets of volcanic centers, the Klyuchevskoy Volcanic Group (KVG), Russia and Mount Spurr, Alaska is examined. In both regions, a pulsing pattern of deep seismicity is observed with many cycles following eruptive activity or periods of unrest. The bulk of the seismicity beneath the KVG is comprised of long-period events many of which share a similar appearance. Cross correlation of the waveforms for events occurring between 12/24/2007 and 12/31/2008 show a number of event families occurring over long time spans. New relative locations for these families which …
Character And Controls Of Fold-And-Thrust Deformation From Pre-Orogenic To Foreland Basin Deposits: An Example From The Gilead Creek Region Of The Northeastern Brooks Range, Alaska, Garrett Speeter
Geosciences
"The character of structures in the Gilead Creek region is influenced by the mechanical stratigraphy in the area. Shortening is distributed throughout the mechanical stratigraphy along detachments in the incompetent Kayak, Kavik, Kingak, and Hue Shales. Detachment intervals separate competent Lisburne Group, Echooka Formation, Ledge Sandstone/Shublik Formation, Gilead sandstone, and moderately competent Seabee Formation from each other and allow the competent units to fold at distinct wavelengths according to their mechanical properties. Thick, competent units tend to form long-wavelength folds. Thin, competent units form relatively short-wavelength folds. Thin, competent units that are structurally bound to a thicker, structurally more dominant …
Molecular Mechanisms Of Self-Renewal In Marrow Stromal Stem Cells, Carmen I. Rios
Molecular Mechanisms Of Self-Renewal In Marrow Stromal Stem Cells, Carmen I. Rios
Open Access Dissertations
Adult stem cells currently represent the most promising cell type for cell therapy approaches in regenerative medicine. To obtain a thorough understanding of their properties is essential for successful stem cell therapy approaches. We previously identified a unique population of human marrow-isolated adult multilineage inducible (MIAMI) cells isolated from males and females 3 to 72 years of age. Although their numbers decrease with age, their molecular profile is sustained, suggesting that these cells self-renew during the lifetime of the individual. Understanding the mechanisms of in vitro self-renewal will allow us to expand these cells to numbers suitable for cell therapy …
