Importance Of Phase Unwrapping For The Reconstruction Of Microwave Tomographic Images, Tomasz M. Grzegorczyk, Paul M. Meaney, Soon Ik Jeon, Shireen D. Geimer, Keith D. Paulsen Nov 2010

Importance Of Phase Unwrapping For The Reconstruction Of Microwave Tomographic Images, Tomasz M. Grzegorczyk, Paul M. Meaney, Soon Ik Jeon, Shireen D. Geimer, Keith D. Paulsen

Dartmouth Scholarship

Microwave image reconstruction is typically based on a regularized least-square minimization of either the complex-valued field difference between recorded and modeled data or the logarithmic transformation of these field differences. Prior work has shown anecdotally that the latter outperforms the former in limited surveys of simulated and experimental phantom results. In this paper, we provide a theoretical explanation of these empirical findings by developing closed form solutions for the fie

An Asymptotic Formula For The Taylor Series Coefficients Of Functions With Algebraic Singularites, Michael Northington V Nov 2010

An Asymptotic Formula For The Taylor Series Coefficients Of Functions With Algebraic Singularites, Michael Northington V

Analysis Seminar

We present a known result of an asymptotic formula for the coefficients of the Taylor series expansion of functions under certain conditions. Our results show that knowing the location of algebraic singularities of a function can tell us a great deal about the asymptotic behavior of the coefficients of its power series. We then introduce a class of orthogonal polynomials, known as the ultraspherical or Gegenbauer polynomials (of which the Legendre polynomials are a special case), and use our results to find an asymptotic formula for these polynomials for all points in the complex plane.

Strong Asymptotics For Orthogonal Polynomials In Weighted Bergman Spaces Of The Unit Disk, Erwin Miña-Díaz Nov 2010

Strong Asymptotics For Orthogonal Polynomials In Weighted Bergman Spaces Of The Unit Disk, Erwin Miña-Díaz

Analysis Seminar

In this talk, we present a new series representation for polynomials orthogonal over the complex unit disk with respect to a weight of the form |ℎ()|ᵖ, where ℎ() is an analytic function in the closed unit disk || < 1 that does not vanish on the circle || = 1. This representation allows us to establish the strong asymptotic behavior of the polynomials at every point of the complex plane.

Exhumation Mechanisms Of The Greater Himalayan Sequence, Garhwal Region, India, Christopher James Spencer Nov 2010

Exhumation Mechanisms Of The Greater Himalayan Sequence, Garhwal Region, India, Christopher James Spencer

Theses and Dissertations

Geothermobarometric, micro- and macro-structural data indicate that peak metamorphic pressure and temperature of the Greater Himalayan Sequence (GHS) of the Garhwal Region of India increase dramatically across the Main Central Thrust (MCT). Metamorphic pressure and temperature increase from ~5 kbar and ~550 ºC in the Lesser Himalayan Crystalline Sequence (LHCS) in the footwall to ~14 kbar and ~850 ºC at ~3 km above the MCT in the hanging wall (GHS). Pressures decrease slightly upsection to ~8 kbar and temperatures remain nearly constant at ~850 ºC to the structurally overlying South Tibetan Detachment (STD). The LHCS exhibits a high temperature-depth gradient …

Interaction-Dependent Pcr: Identification Of Ligand-Target Pairs From Libraries Of Ligands And Libraries Of Targets In A Single Solution-Phase Experiment, Lynn M. Mcgregor, David J. Gorin, Christoph E. Dumelin, David R. Liu Nov 2010

Interaction-Dependent Pcr: Identification Of Ligand-Target Pairs From Libraries Of Ligands And Libraries Of Targets In A Single Solution-Phase Experiment, Lynn M. Mcgregor, David J. Gorin, Christoph E. Dumelin, David R. Liu

Chemistry: Faculty Publications

Interaction-dependent PCR (IDPCR) is a solution-phase method to identify binding partners from combined libraries of small-molecule ligands and targets in a single experiment. Binding between DNA-linked targets and DNA-linked ligands induces formation of an extendable duplex. Extension links codes that identify the ligand and target into one selectively amplifiable DNA molecule. In a model selection, IDPCR resulted in the enrichment of DNA encoding all five known protein-ligand pairs out of 67 599 possible sequences.

Voltage Stability Impact Of Grid-Tied Photovoltaic Systems Utilizing Dynamic Reactive Power Control, Adedamola Omole Nov 2010

Voltage Stability Impact Of Grid-Tied Photovoltaic Systems Utilizing Dynamic Reactive Power Control, Adedamola Omole

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Photovoltaic (PV) DGs can be optimized to provide reactive power support to the grid,

although this feature is currently rarely utilized as most DG systems are designed to

operate with unity power factor and supply real power only to the grid. In this work, the

voltage stability of a power system embedded with PV DG is examined in the context of

the high reactive power requirement after a voltage sag or fault. A real-time dynamic

multi-function power controller that enables renewable source PV DGs to provide the

reactive power support necessary to maintain the voltage stability of the microgrid, and …

Selected Students’, Parents’, And Graduate Student Tutors’ Experiences And Perceptions In A Community Of Interest Summer Literacy Camp, Kim G. Thomas

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In this qualitative case study, I examined a local summer literacy camp in which

graduate student tutors tutored elementary and middle school students in reading and

writing. I focused the study on the primary stakeholders in the summer literacy camp:

ts, and the course instructor/camp director because

their voices are limited in the current literature. In this Community of Interest Summer

Literacy Camp, the graduate student tutors moved from a position of fear and trepidation

to a position of empowerment in which they hoped to make changes in their classrooms,

schools, and communities. The tutees learned to appreciate the …

Generation Of A Complete Set Of Additive Shape-Invariant Potentials From An Euler Equation, Jonathan Bougie, Asim Gangopadhyaya, Jeffrey Mallow Nov 2010

Generation Of A Complete Set Of Additive Shape-Invariant Potentials From An Euler Equation, Jonathan Bougie, Asim Gangopadhyaya, Jeffrey Mallow

Physics: Faculty Publications and Other Works

In supersymmetric quantum mechanics, shape invariance is a sufficient condition for solvability. We show that all conventional additive shape-invariant superpotentials that are independent of ħ can be generated from two partial differential equations. One of these is equivalent to the one-dimensional Euler equation expressing momentum conservation for inviscid fluid flow, and it is closed by the other. We solve these equations, generate the set of all conventional shape-invariant superpotentials, and show that there are no others in this category. We then develop an algorithm for generating all additive shape-invariant superpotentials including those that depend on ħ explicitly.

Libs And Lite Emission Based Laser Remote Sensing Of Chemical Species And Enhanced Modeling Of Atmospheric Absorption, Dzianis V. Pliutau Nov 2010

Libs And Lite Emission Based Laser Remote Sensing Of Chemical Species And Enhanced Modeling Of Atmospheric Absorption, Dzianis V. Pliutau

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Laser-Induced Breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) and Laser-Induced Thermal Emission (LITE) emission based laser remote sensing were investigated with the application to the remote measurements of trace chemical species. In particular, UVvisible LIBS and Mid-IR LITE systems were developed and measurements of remote targets and chemical surfaces were studied. The propagation through the atmosphere of the multi-wavelength backscattered LIBS and LITE optical spectrum with atmospheric absorption effects on the returned lidar signal was investigated. An enhanced model of the atmospheric effects on emission-based laser-remote sensing was developed and found to be consistent and in agreement with our experimental results.

LITE measurements were …

Oh And Oi Airglow Layer Modulation By Ducted Short-Period Gravity Waves: Effects Of Trapping Altitude, Jonathan B. Snively, Victor P. Pasko, Michael J. Taylor Nov 2010

Oh And Oi Airglow Layer Modulation By Ducted Short-Period Gravity Waves: Effects Of Trapping Altitude, Jonathan B. Snively, Victor P. Pasko, Michael J. Taylor

Publications

Perturbations to the OH and OI [O(1S) 557.7 nm] airglow layers by ducted gravity waves near the Brunt‐Väisälä period are investigated using a 2‐D numerical model. Airglow signatures of these waves are strongly determined by perturbations of O, O3, and H, which exhibit peak densities near and above mesopause. Strong periodic vertical wind components of short‐period gravity waves induce opposite relative density perturbations above and below the layer density peaks. Airglow signatures for ducted waves depend on the specific vertical shapes and altitudes of the wave packets relative to ambient species density profiles; waves perturbing only the bottoms or tops …

Improving Student Achievement Through Professional Learning Communities, Mindy L. Roberts

Department of Educational Administration: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

This study determined how general education teachers in a Midwestern school district perceived their personal skill level in working collaboratively and focusing on academic results while working in a Professional Learning Community (PLC). The overarching question for the research was: Do educator perceptions of their personal skill level in working collaboratively and focusing on academic results while implementing a Professional Learning Community have an effect on student achievement? The study looked at teacher perceptions within the three themes of PLCs: (a) assuring students learn at high levels, (b) creating a culture of collaboration, and (c) focusing on academic results. Student …

Linking Soil Loss To Sediment Delivery In Two Estuaries In Puerto Rico, Nekesha Bernadette Williams Nov 2010

Linking Soil Loss To Sediment Delivery In Two Estuaries In Puerto Rico, Nekesha Bernadette Williams

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Enhanced soil loss from the watershed is a major environmental issue. Increased soil loss from a watershed can potentially increase sediment delivery and loading to aquatic ecosystems such as rivers and estuaries. An increase in sediment delivery and loading to freshwater and transitional marine ecosystems can impact water quality and supply specifically by: (1) reducing water clarity, (2) transporting nutrient and pollutant laden sediments and (3) reducing the storage capacity of reservoirs. To address these broader environmental impacts of increased sediment delivery and loading to aquatic ecosystems it is imperative that potential source areas of sediments available for transport are …

Rapidly Reconfigurable Slow-Light System Based On Off-Resonant Raman Absorption, Praveen K. Vudyasetu, Ryan M. Camacho, John C. Howell Nov 2010

Rapidly Reconfigurable Slow-Light System Based On Off-Resonant Raman Absorption, Praveen K. Vudyasetu, Ryan M. Camacho, John C. Howell

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

We present a slow-light system based on dual Raman absorption resonances in warm rubidium vapor. Each Raman absorption resonance is produced by a control beam in an off-resonant Λ system. This system combines all optical control of the Raman absorption and the low-dispersion broadening properties of the double Lorentzian absorption slow light. The bandwidth, group delay, and central frequency of the slow-light system can all be tuned dynamically by changing the properties of the control beam. We demonstrate multiple pulse delays with low distortion and show that such a system has fast switching dynamics and thus fast reconfiguration rates.

A Body Area Network (BAN) is a WSN consisting of miniaturized, low-power, autonomous, wireless biosensors, which are seamlessly placed or implanted in the human body to provide an adaptable and smart health care system. The possible applications of BAN are in health care services and medicine, assisting persons with disabilities, and entertainment and sports. The nodes in a BAN generally use IEEE 802.15.4 radios which have low- power consumption and are relatively immune to interference. In …

Quasi-Decadal Spectral Peaks Of Tropical Western Pacific Ssts As A Precursor For Tropical Cyclone Threat, Shih-Yu (Simon) Wang, Adam J. Clark Nov 2010

Quasi-Decadal Spectral Peaks Of Tropical Western Pacific Ssts As A Precursor For Tropical Cyclone Threat, Shih-Yu (Simon) Wang, Adam J. Clark

Plants, Soils, and Climate Faculty Publications

A recent study identified significant spectral peaks in sea surface temperatures (SSTs) at quasi‐decadal frequency bands, which were unique to the tropical western Pacific (TWP). Using the multitaper method for spectral and coherence analysis, this study finds that the TWP SSTs at these quasi‐decadal time scales are coherent with western Pacific tropical cyclone threat [as measured by the power dissipation index (PDI)], but that the PDI lags TWP SSTs by about two years. Thus, the quasi‐decadal peaks in TWP SSTs may be a precursor for enhanced tropical cyclone threat two years later. Composite analyses are shown to illustrate how areal …
