Modeling Mitochondrial Bioenergetics With Integrated Volume Dynamics., Jason N. Bazil, Gregery T. Buzzard, Ann E. Rundell

Department of Mathematics Faculty Publications

Mathematical models of mitochondrial bioenergetics provide powerful analytical tools to help interpret experimental data and facilitate experimental design for elucidating the supporting biochemical and physical processes. As a next step towards constructing a complete physiologically faithful mitochondrial bioenergetics model, a mathematical model was developed targeting the cardiac mitochondrial bioenergetic based upon previous efforts, and corroborated using both transient and steady state data. The model consists of several modified rate functions of mitochondrial bioenergetics, integrated calcium dynamics and a detailed description of the K+-cycle and its effect on mitochondrial bioenergetics and matrix volume regulation. Model simulations were used to fit 42 …

Calibrated Peer Review: A New Tool For Integrating Information Literacy Skills In Writing-Intensive Large Classroom Settings., Michael Fosmire

Libraries Faculty and Staff Scholarship and Research

Calibrated Peer Review™ (CPR) is a program that can significantly enhance the ability to integrate intensive information literacy exercises into large classroom settings. CPR is founded on a solid pedagogic base for learning, and it is formulated in such a way that information skills can easily be inserted. However, there is no mention of its application for information literacy in the library literature. A sample implementation of CPR in a course co-taught by science disciplinary faculty and librarians at Purdue University is presented with recommendations for optimal use of this resource. CPR is a valuable new tool that librarians can …

Large Scale Application Of Vibration Sensors For Fan Monitoring At Commercial Layer Hen Houses, Yan Chen, Ji-Qin Ni, Claude A. Diehl, Albert J. Heber, Bill W. Bogan, Li-Long Chai

School of Agricultural & Biological Engineering Faculty Publications

Continuously monitoring the operation of each individual fan can significantly improve the measurement quality of aerial pollutant emissions from animal buildings that have a large number of fans. To monitor the fan operation by detecting the fan vibration is a relatively new technique. A low-cost electronic vibration sensor was developed and commercialized. However, its large scale application has not yet been evaluated. This paper presents long-term performance results of this vibration sensor at two large commercial layer houses. Vibration sensors were installed on 164 fans of 130 cm diameter to continuously monitor the fan on/off status for two years. The …

Flowfield Uncertainty Analysis For Hypersonic Cfd Simulations, A B. Weaver, Alina A. Alexeenko, R B. Greendyke, J A. Camberos

School of Aeronautics and Astronautics Faculty Publications

Uncertainty quantification (UQ) in the hypersonic flow regime offers valuable information to determine physical models in need of improvement and to assist in design of vehicles and flight experiments. Here we present results of UQ analysis based on polynomial chaos method to determine flowfield and surface heat flux uncertainty under typical blunt-body re-entry conditions. The NASA Langley code, LAURA, was used for axisymmetric CFD calculations of chemically reacting hypersonic flow over FIRE-II configuration. A third order polynomial chaos (PC) method using the Gauss-Hermite quadrature was applied for determining probability density functions and moments of output quantities. Input parameters such as …

Spontaneous Transition To Superrotation In Warm Climates Simulated By Cam3, Rodrigo Caballero, Matthew Huber Jan 2010

Spontaneous Transition To Superrotation In Warm Climates Simulated By Cam3, Rodrigo Caballero, Matthew Huber

Department of Earth, Atmospheric, and Planetary Sciences Faculty Publications

Recent paleoclimate proxy reconstructions show that tropical surface temperatures may have been as high as 35°–40°C in the Early Cenozoic. Here, we study the tropical atmospheric circulation's response to temperatures in this range using a full-complexity atmospheric general circulation model (AGCM). We find that when equatorial surface temperatures exceed ∼33°C, the model undergoes a transition to equatorial superrotation, a state with strong annual- and zonal-mean westerlies on the equator. The transition is driven by zonal momentum convergence due to large-amplitude transient eddies on the equator. These eddies have a structure similar to the observed Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO). The model's MJO …

Additive Factors And Stages Of Mental Processes In Task Networks., Richard Schweickert, Donald L. Fisher, William M. Goldstein Jan 2010

Additive Factors And Stages Of Mental Processes In Task Networks., Richard Schweickert, Donald L. Fisher, William M. Goldstein

Department of Psychological Sciences Faculty Publications

To perform a task a subject executes mental processes. An experimental manipulation, such as a change in stimulus intensity, is said to selectively influence a process if it changes the duration of that process leaving other process durations unchanged. For random process durations a definition of a factor selectively influencing a process by increments is given in terms of stochastic dominance (also called “the usual stochastic order”. A technique for analyzing reaction times, Sternberg's Additive Factor Method, assumes all the processes are in series. When all processes are in series, each process is called a stage. With the Additive Factor …

Develop Sonic Infrared Imaging Nde For Local Damage Assessment In Civil Structures, Qi He Jan 2010

Develop Sonic Infrared Imaging Nde For Local Damage Assessment In Civil Structures, Qi He

Wayne State University Dissertations

Nondestructive Evaluation (NDE) is an interdisciplinary field of study, which is concerned with the development of analysis techniques and measurement technologies for the quantitative characterization of materials, tissues and structures. Ultrasonic IR Imaging is a novel NDE technique, which combines a short ultrasonic pulse excitation and infrared imaging to detect defects in materials and structures. In this technique, a sound pulse with a frequency in the range of 20-40kHz is infused on a target material for a short duration (usually less than one second). The sonic/ultrasonic sound waves travel into the material and cause rubbing and clapping between the surfaces …

Robotic Goal-Based Semi-Autonomous Algorithms Improve Remote Operator Performance, Shawn Hunt Jan 2010

Robotic Goal-Based Semi-Autonomous Algorithms Improve Remote Operator Performance, Shawn Hunt

Wayne State University Dissertations

The focus of this research was to determine if reliable goal-based semi-autonomous algorithms are able to improve remote operator performance or not. Two semi-autonomous algorithms were examined: visual servoing and visual dead reckoning. Visual servoing uses computer vision techniques to generate movement commands while using internal properties of the camera combined with sensor data that tell the robot its current position based on its previous position. This research shows that the semi-autonomous algorithms developed increased performance in a measurable way. An analysis of tracking algorithms for visual servoing was conducted and tracking algorithms were enhanced to make them as robust …

Detection Statistics Of Multiple-Pulse Optical Signals Through Atmospheric Turbulence, Jacob C. Brandenburg Jan 2010

Detection Statistics Of Multiple-Pulse Optical Signals Through Atmospheric Turbulence, Jacob C. Brandenburg

Wayne State University Dissertations

Statistics are studied for signal detection in optical communication systems operating through the atmosphere. Optical communication systems with which this study is concerned are those that employ intensity modulation and direct detection. Atmospheric turbulence, which is fluctuations in the atmosphere's optical index of refraction, is a hindrance to optical wireless communications because of the signal fades, called scintillation, it causes at the optical receiver. In order to mitigate the deteriorative effect of turbulence on the communications system, the signal length and detection threshold for the signal detector must be properly chosen.

In this study, mathematical models for photoelectron generation in …

Dealing With Misbehavior In Distributed Systems: A Game-Theoretic Approach, Nandan Garg Jan 2010

Dealing With Misbehavior In Distributed Systems: A Game-Theoretic Approach, Nandan Garg

Wayne State University Dissertations

Most distributed systems comprise autonomous entities interacting with each other to achieve their objectives. These entities behave selfishly when making decisions. This behavior may result in strategical manipulation of the protocols thus jeopardizing the system wide goals. Micro-economics and game theory provides suitable tools to model such interactions. We use game theory to model and study three specific problems in distributed systems. We study the problem of sharing the cost of multicast transmissions and develop mechanisms to prevent cheating in such settings. We study the problem of antisocial behavior in a scheduling mechanism based on the second price sealed bid …
