A Periodic Review Base Stock Inventory System With Sales, Yanyi Xu, Arnab Bisi, Maqbool Dada Jan 2010

A Periodic Review Base Stock Inventory System With Sales, Yanyi Xu, Arnab Bisi, Maqbool Dada

Purdue CIBER Working Papers

We consider a system in which an order is placed every T periods to bring the inventory position up to the base stock S. We accept demand until the inventory position reaches a sales rejection threshold M. Our objective is to find the optimal values of S and M which minimize the long-run average cost per period. We establish the stationary distribution of our system and develop structural properties of the optimal solution that facilitate computation. In particular, we show that in an optimal solution, the optimal value of M is non-negative under some reasonable conditions. Hence, in our model …

Use Of Web-Based Lessons Of Statistical Concepts With Graphics And Animation To Enhance The Effectiveness Of Learning, Lavanya Pillala

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Statistics is of critical importance to engineers. However, many engineering students struggle to grasp the meaning of statistical concepts and the idiosyncrasies of statistical methodologies. Because of this problem, instructors of statistics are constantly searching for better ways to help students understand statistical concepts. The goal of this project is to design and develop web-based lessons that use graphics and animations to enhance the effectiveness of students' learning of statistical concepts.

Lessons of three important statistical concepts have been developed for this thesis - normal distribution, central limit theorem and confidence & tolerance intervals - following well-recognized instructional design development …

Determining Metastable Densities In An Argon Discharge Through Optical Emission Spectroscopy, Jared A. Miles Jan 2010

Determining Metastable Densities In An Argon Discharge Through Optical Emission Spectroscopy, Jared A. Miles

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

A plasma diagnostic technique has been experimentally demonstrated where optical emission measurements of relative intensities of spectral lines in the violet range were combined with available electron-impact cross sections to yield absolute Ar metastable species concentration. An enabling factor of this analysis was that the electron excitation pattern was quite different between the Ar ground state and the metastable state. The result of this pattern was that the optical spectrum was unique depending on whether the emission was generated by direct excitation from the ground state, or by stepwise excitation from one of the metastable states. This study has shown …

AB3 monomer (3,4,5-Trifluoro-4'-hydroxybenzophenone) was used for polymerizations in order to mimic the combination of AB and AB2 monomers, and which has potential to facilitate concurrent polymerization and functionalization. 'Pre' and 'post' polymerization functionalization of the PEK system was done using phenol, 4-bromophenol, and 3/4-aminophenol. The solubility of the functionalized polymers was increased; and the crystallinity was decreased significantly compared to the corresponding unfunctionalized homopolymer. The polymers were characterized by 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy, Gel Permeation Chromatography (GPC), Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA), and Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC). DSC results showed that the crystallinity of the polymer was tuned by the amount …

A Unified Method For Detecting And Isolating Process Faults And Sensor Faults In Nonlinear Systems, Niharika Sonti Jan 2010

A Unified Method For Detecting And Isolating Process Faults And Sensor Faults In Nonlinear Systems, Niharika Sonti

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

With the increase in the complexity of control systems design and the demand for more productivity, the possibility of the occurrence of faults in control systems has also significantly increased. In this thesis, a unified method for the fault diagnosis of sensor faults and process faults is developed for a class of Lipschitz nonlinear uncertain systems. The fault detection and isolation (FDI) architecture is comprised of a fault detection estimator and a bank of fault isolation estimators (FIEs), where each FIE is designed, based on the functional structure of a particular fault, in the fault class under consideration. The output …

The neotropics harbor an enormous diversity of tachinid flies, yet the fauna remains poorly known. The tribe Blondeliini is particularly diverse in this region and desperately needs taxonomic attention. Here, I present a revision of the neotropical genus Erythromelana Townsend including the redescription of three previously described species and the description of 11 new species. Two species previously assigned into this genus, are resurrected as distinct genera. Erythromelana species are widely distributed from southern Mexico to northern Argentina, with the Andes being a hotspot of diversity. Erythromelana are specialized on geometrids in the genus Eois, which mainly feed on plants …

Reservoir Analysis Of The Clinton Interval In Stark And Summit Counties, Ohio, Dominick Andrew Wytovich Jan 2010

Reservoir Analysis Of The Clinton Interval In Stark And Summit Counties, Ohio, Dominick Andrew Wytovich

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

The characteristics of a sandstone reservoir of Silurian age (the "Clinton interval") were analyzed using 382 geophysical well logs from the Dominion Gas storage field located in Stark and Summit Counties, Ohio. These sandstones have long been identified by the informal drillers' terms, White, Red, and Stray Clinton. Gamma ray logs were used to analyze the distribution of net stand thickness and its relation to initial production through the construction of isopach and net sand isolith maps. I constructed eight cross sections to identify and correlate the tops of three prominent sandstones and two marine flooding surfaces to evaluate reservoir …

Fabrication Of Zinc Oxide Thin Films For Renewable Energy And Sensor Applications, Theresa Y. Hill Jan 2010

Fabrication Of Zinc Oxide Thin Films For Renewable Energy And Sensor Applications, Theresa Y. Hill

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Progress in commercializing renewable energy technologies is being advanced by developments in Zinc Oxide material science. The photovoltaic cell, for example, generates electricity by receiving solar energy into the cell, generating electrons, and simultaneously transporting electrical charge out of the cell. Metals are capable of removing electrical charge but block transmission of sunshine. Glass and plastics are capable of transmitting sunshine but block the removal of electrical charge. Therefore an exterior layer that is both optically transparent and electrically conductive is desirable. Transparent conductive oxides (TCOs) are the ideal material for such applications since they are capable of both functions. …

Habitat and forage selection by deer can cause local extinction of plant species. In my research, I asked: 1) How do deer population growth rates in urban parks change through time? 2) Are culling rates and deer densities correlated? 3) Are browse rates on Trillium spp. and deer densities correlated? I used FLIR deer census data from Davis Aviation and culling data from Five Rivers MetroParks (Montgomery County, Ohio). I found that deer population growth rates generally declined from 2003 to 2008. The number of deer culled was positively correlated to the deer densities. The browse rates of Trillium spp. …

Reflexivity In Pigeons, Mary M. Sweeney, Peter J. Urcuioli Jan 2010

Reflexivity In Pigeons, Mary M. Sweeney, Peter J. Urcuioli

Department of Psychological Sciences Faculty Publications

A recent theory of pigeons’ equivalence-class formation (Urcuioli, 2008) predicts that reflexivity, an untrained ability to match a stimulus to itself, should be observed after training on two “mirror-image” symbolic successive matching tasks plus identity successive matching using some of the symbolic matching stimuli. One group of pigeons was trained in this fashion; a second group was trained similarly but with successive oddity (rather than identity). Subsequently, comparison-response rates on novel matching versus mismatching sequences with the remaining symbolic matching stimuli were measured on non-reinforced probe trials. Higher rates were observed on matching than on mismatching probes in the former …

Associative Symmetry And Stimulus-Class Formation By Pigeons: The Role Of Non-Reinforced Baseline Relations, Peter J. Urcuioli Jan 2010

Associative Symmetry And Stimulus-Class Formation By Pigeons: The Role Of Non-Reinforced Baseline Relations, Peter J. Urcuioli

Department of Psychological Sciences Faculty Publications

Two experiments tested the assumption of Urcuioli’s (2008) theory of pigeons’ equivalence-class formation that consistent non-reinforcement of certain stimulus combinations in successive matching juxtaposed with consistent reinforcement of other combinations generates stimulus classes containing the elements of the reinforced combinations. In Experiment 1, pigeons were concurrently trained on symbolic (AB) and two identity (AA and BB) successive tasks in which half of all identity trials ended in non-reinforcement but all AB trials were reinforced, contingent upon either responding or not-responding to the comparisons. Subsequent symmetry (BA) probe trials showed evidence of symmetry in one of four pigeons. In Experiment 2, …

Facilitating Teaching And Research On Open Ended Problem Solving Through The Development Of A Dynamic Computer Tool, Matthew Verleger, Heidi Diefes-Dux

School of Engineering Education Graduate Student Series

Model Eliciting Activities (MEAs) are realistic open-ended problems set in engineering contexts; student teams draw on their diverse experiences both in and out of the classroom to develop a mathematical model explicated in a memo to the client. These activities have been implemented in a required first-year engineering course with enrollments of as many as 1700 students in a given semester. The earliest MEA implementations had student teams write a single solution to a problem in the form of a memo to the client and receive feedback from their TA. For research purposes, a simple static online submission form, a …
