Advanced Mechanics Of Materials With Microstructure, Shreehari Elangovan
Advanced Mechanics Of Materials With Microstructure, Shreehari Elangovan
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open
The study of advanced materials aimed at improving human life has been performed since time immemorial. Such studies have created everlasting and greatly revered monuments and have helped revolutionize transportation by ushering the age of lighter–than–air flying machines. Hence a study of the mechanical behavior of advanced materials can pave way for their use for mankind’s benefit. In this school of thought, the aim of this dissertation is to broadly perform two investigations. First, an efficient modeling approach is established to predict the elastic response of cellular materials with distributions of cell geometries. Cellular materials find important applications in structural …
The Role Of Patent Eligibility In Policing Claim Scope, Christopher M. Holman
The Role Of Patent Eligibility In Policing Claim Scope, Christopher M. Holman
Faculty Works
Bilski v. Kappos (Bilski II) empowered the lower courts to deploy patent eligibility as a doctrinal tool for policing claim scope. Because Bilski II leaves the test for patent eligibility largely undefined, the lower courts and PTO, in particular the Federal Circuit, could actively invoke the doctrine as a “wildcard” to invalidate patent claims deemed unduly broad, or otherwise “unworthy” by the court. Judge Rader made a similar observation recently with respect to the Lilly written description requirement, another doctrine of patentability for which the criteria for compliance remains largely undefined. However, early indications suggest that the Federal Circuit and …

Context: In the 1940s, osteopathic researchers suggested that paraspinal tissue abnormality was associated with spontaneous muscle activity, but few studies have since re-examined these reports. Objective: To determine whether abnormal motor activity plays a role in deep paraspinal tissues that appear abnormal to palpation. Methods: Using an observational study design, the PVG of participants with thoracic pain were palpated by two examiners for consensus on the most marked level of tissue abnormality. Dual fine-wire, intramuscular electrodes were inserted into the deep transversospinalis (multifidus, rotatores) muscles at the abnormal level and at two normal sites (above and below the abnormal level). …

Central Anatolia is quiet in terms of seismic activity, and rarely earthquakes up to magnitude 5.6 occur in the inner part of the Anatolian block or Anatolian platelet. Southeast of Ankara, the capital city of Turkey, two earthquake sequences with maximum magnitude of 5.6 occurred in 2005 and 2007. We discuss these shallow crustal deformation in the Anatolian platelet, in the light of seismological data from these earthquakes (M_L= 5.6) and their aftershocks. Following the earthquake of December 20, 2007 near Bala town, Ankara, we installed seven temporary stations in the first 24 hours to observe the aftershock activity and …
Lessons Learned From An Investigation Into The Analysis Avoidance Techniques Of Malicious Software, Murray Brand, Craig Valli, Andrew Woodward
Lessons Learned From An Investigation Into The Analysis Avoidance Techniques Of Malicious Software, Murray Brand, Craig Valli, Andrew Woodward
Australian Digital Forensics Conference
This paper outlines a number of key lessons learned from an investigation into the techniques malicious executable software can employ to hinder digital forensic examination. Malware signature detection has been recognised by researchers to be far less than ideal. Thus, the forensic analyst may be required to manually analyse suspicious files. However, in order to hinder the forensic analyst, hide its true intent and to avoid detection, modern malware can be wrapped with packers or protectors, and layered with a plethora of antianalysis techniques. This necessitates the forensic analyst to develop static and dynamic analysis skills tailored to navigate a …

Fireguard - A Secure Browser With Reduced Forensic Footprint, Don Griffiths, Peter James
Australian Digital Forensics Conference
Fireguard is a secure portable browser designed to reduce both data leakage from browser data remnants and cyber attacks from malicious code exploiting vulnerabilites in browser plug-ins, extensions and software updates. A browser can leave data remnants on a host PC hard disk drive, often unbeknown to a user, in the form of cookies, histories, saved passwords, cached web pages and downloaded objects. Forensic analysis, using freely available computer forensic tools, may reveal sensitive and confidential information. A browser’s capability to increase its features through plug-ins and extensions and perform patch management or upgrade to a new release via a …

The ever increasing use and reliance upon computers in both the public and private sector has led to enormous numbers of computers being disposed of at the end of their useful life within an organisation. As the cost of computers has dropped, their use in the home has also continued to increase. In most organisations, computers have a relatively short life and are replaced on a regular basis with the result that, if not properly cleansed of data, they are released into the public domain containing data that can be relatively up to date. This problem is exacerbated by the …

Freezing And Melting Hysteresis Measurements In Solutions Of Hyperactive Antifreeze Protein From An Antarctic Bacteria, Yeliz Celik, Ran Drori, Laurie Graham, Yee-Foong Mok, Peter L. Davies, Ido Braslavsky
Physics Faculty Research
Antifreeze proteins (AFPs) evolved in cold-adapted organisms and serve to protect them against freezing in cold conditions by arresting ice crystal growth. Recently, we have shown quantitatively that adsorption of AFPs not only prevents ice from growing but also from melting. This melting inhibition by AFPs, which results in superheated ice (Celik et al, PNAS 2010), is not a well-known phenomenon. Here we present our recent findings in which the Ca2+-dependent hyperactive AFP from Marinomonas primoryensis (MpAFP) clearly displays this property. Additionally, we found that an ice crystal that is initially stabilized and protected by this type of AFP can …

We describe techniques to selectively harvest single ferroelectric domain nanoparticles of BaTiO3 as small as 9 nm from a plethora of nanoparticles produced by mechanical grinding. High resolution transmission electron microscopy imaging shows the unidomain atomic structure of the nanoparticles and reveals compressive and tensile surface strains which are attributed to the preservation of ferroelectric behavior in these particles.
We demonstrate the positive benefits of using harvested nanoparticles in disparate liquid crystal systems.

We describe preliminary results of a set of laser beam propagation experiments performed over a long (149 km) near-horizontal propagation path between Mauna Loa (Hawaii Island) and Haleakala (Island of Maui) mountains in February 2010. The distinctive feature of the experimental campaign referred to here as the Coherent Multi-Beam Atmospheric Transceiver (COMBAT) experiments is that the measurements of the atmospheric-turbulence induced laser beam intensity scintillations at the receiver telescope aperture were obtained simultaneously using three laser sources (laser beacons) with different wavelengths (λ1 = 0.53 μm, λ2 = 1.06 μm, and λ3 = 1.55 μm). The presented experimental results on …

Web-based activities have the potential to teach engineering in both formal and informal science education settings, maximizing outreach efforts. To date, many activities available on the internet teach about engineering, but few allow students to truly “do” engineering.
This project utilized web animation and interaction in the design of a web-based experience focused on engineering design. In this activity, targeted toward middle school students, users played the role of engineer and engaged in the process of designing a cell phone for the older adult market. It was hoped that this web-based activity would increase participant understanding of what engineering is …

Hydrolysis Of P-Nitrophenyl Esters Promoted By Semi-Fluorinated Quaternary Ammonium Polymer Latexes And Films, Baljinder Kaur, Sean P. Mcbride, Warren T. Ford
Physics Faculty Research
Semifluorinated polymer latexes were prepared by emulsion polymerization of 2.5-25% of a fluoroalkyl methacrylate, 25% chloromethylstyrene, 1% styrylmethyl(trimethyl)ammonium chloride, and the remainder 2-ethylhexyl methacrylate under surfactant-free conditions. The chloromethylstyrene units were converted to quaternary ammonium ions with trimethylamine. In aqueous dispersions at particle concentrations of less than 1 mg mL-1 the quaternary ammonium ion latexes promoted hydrolyses of p-nitrophenyl hexanoate (PNPH) in pH 9.4 borate buffer and of diethyl p-nitrophenyl phosphate (Paraoxon) in 0.1 M NaOH at 30 oC with half-lives of less than 10 minutes. Thin 0.7-2 μm films of the latexes on glass promoted fast …

Background: Advances in generating genome-wide gene expression data have accelerated the development of molecular-based tumor classification systems. Tools that allow the translation of such molecular classification schemas from research into clinical applications are still missing in the emerging era of personalized medicine.
Results: We developed GliomaPredict as a computational tool that allows the fast and reliable classification of glioma patients into one of six previously published stratified subtypes based on sets of extensively validated classifiers derived from hundreds of glioma transcriptomic profiles. Our tool utilizes a principle component analysis (PCA)-based approach to generate a visual representation of the analyses, quantifies …
