Middle-Term Metropolitan Water Availability Index Assessment Based On Synergistic Potential Of Multi-Sensor Data, Ni-Bin Chang, Y. Jeffrey Yang, Ammarin Daranpob Jan 2010

Middle-Term Metropolitan Water Availability Index Assessment Based On Synergistic Potential Of Multi-Sensor Data, Ni-Bin Chang, Y. Jeffrey Yang, Ammarin Daranpob

Faculty Bibliography 2010s

The impact of recent drought and water pollution episodes results in an acute need to project future water availability to assist water managers in water utility infrastructure management within many metropolitan regions. Separate drought and water quality indices previously developed might not be sufficient for the purpose of such an assessment. This paper describes the development of the "Metropolitan Water Availability Index (MWAI)" and its potential applications in assessing the middle-term water availability at the watershed scale in a fast growing metropolitan region - the Manatee County near Tampa Bay, Florida, U. S. A. The MWAI framework is based on …

Wave Propagation In Waveguide Arrays With Alternating Positive And Negative Couplings, Nikolaos K. Efremidis, Peng Zhang, Zhigang Chen, Demetrios N. Christodoulides, Christian E. Rüter, Detlef Kip

Faculty Bibliography 2010s

We introduce a waveguide array model with alternating positive and negative couplings between adjacent waveguides. Two different settings where such a model can be realized are identified as arrays of defects in Bragg gratings and arrays with propagation constants that periodically vary along the propagation direction. We analyze the properties of wave propagation in such waveguide arrays and find several interesting properties that have no counterpart in the case of arrays with constant couplings. These include the beam self-splitting, self-induced Talbot oscillations, symmetric evolution of Bloch oscillations, and new families of lattice solitons.

Dynamic Genomes Of Eukaryotes And The Maintenance Of Genomic Integrity, Laura Wegener Parfrey, Laura A. Katz Jan 2010

Dynamic Genomes Of Eukaryotes And The Maintenance Of Genomic Integrity, Laura Wegener Parfrey, Laura A. Katz

Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

Many biologists assume that eukaryotic genomes are transmitted stably between generations with only minor variations. Yet, this presumed constancy is at odds with data indicating that eukaryotic genomes are dynamic, varying extensively in content among many different lineages. Thus, rather than being constant, genomes vary considerably within individuals during their lifetimes.

Teaching As An Ethical Act, Center For Catholic Studies, Seton Hall University Jan 2010

Teaching As An Ethical Act, Center For Catholic Studies, Seton Hall University

Center for Catholic Studies Faculty Seminars and Core Curriculum Seminars

Teaching is a profession that places those of us who are teachers into powerful and influential roles. As with any exercise of power, one must learn to wield that power responsibly. It is on this question of responsibility that this workshop focuses its energies. We will look for guidance in the work of the late philosopher/theologian Bernard Lonergan to sort through the ethical dimensions of teaching – raising questions about one‘s attentiveness to the task, one‘s openness to insight, one‘s quality of judgment, and one‘s more or less adequate response to what is valuable. Finally, we will explore how one …

In Search Of A Method: Charles Sanders Peirce’S Contribution To Theology, Donald Gelpi, Nate Hinerman Jan 2010

In Search Of A Method: Charles Sanders Peirce’S Contribution To Theology, Donald Gelpi, Nate Hinerman

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

This article asserts that when one re-grounds the approach to the theological method of Catholic Theologian, Bernard Lonergan, S.J., in the pragmatistic logic and semiotic realism of Charles Sanders Peirce, then Lonergan's theory of functional specialties gives the promise of enabling one to describe how various types of theological inquiry relate to other scholarly disciplines through the criteria of agreement, convergence, complementarity, and disagreement.

Preschool Connectedness: The Impact Of Attending A School District Affiliated Prekindergarten Program On Student Success In The Initial Elementary Years, Mandy Rose Jan 2010

Preschool Connectedness: The Impact Of Attending A School District Affiliated Prekindergarten Program On Student Success In The Initial Elementary Years, Mandy Rose

Dissertations

Schools are seeking ways to address the achievement gap and yield increased performance for students to meet expectations outlined in NCLB. An examination of efficacy of pre-k program delivery models within a given community might assist districts in determining where to focus energy in an attempt to address the existing achievement gap. Many school districts overlook the years preceding kindergarten as a time to concentrate on needs of the student population. To determine if a relationship existed between the type of pre-k program attended and the level of academic success as well as social competency as measured by office discipline …

Numerical Investigation Of Mechanical Durability In Polymer Electrolyte Membrane Fuel Cells, Ahmet Kusoglu, Michael H. Santare, Anette M. Karlsson, Simon Cleghorn, William B. Johnson Jan 2010

Numerical Investigation Of Mechanical Durability In Polymer Electrolyte Membrane Fuel Cells, Ahmet Kusoglu, Michael H. Santare, Anette M. Karlsson, Simon Cleghorn, William B. Johnson

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

The relationship between the mechanical behavior and water transport in the membrane electrode assembly (MEA) is numerically investigated. Swelling plays a key role in the mechanical response of the MEA during fuel cell operation because swelling can be directly linked to the development of stresses. Thus, in the model introduced here, the stresses and the water distribution are coupled. Two membranes are studied: unreinforced perfluorosulfonic acid (PFSA) and an experimental reinforced composite membrane. The results suggest that open-circuit voltage operations lead to a uniform distribution of stresses and plastic deformation, whereas under current-load operation, the stresses and the plastic deformation …

Optical Isolation For Audio Amplifiers, Matthew Young Jan 2010

Optical Isolation For Audio Amplifiers, Matthew Young

Honors Capstones

Audio amplifier power supplies have typically utilized power transformers to provide safety isolation from a wall outlet. These transformers provide ohmic disconnect between the power supply and the AC mains. The power transformer and its inherent weight and expense can be eliminated by implementing an off line rectified system for high voltage portions of the amplifier. An optical isolator circuit has been designed to allow audio signals to pass while providing the isolation necessary to protect users from a wall outlet power source short circuit. The optical isolator used to pass the input signal in this design is a Fairchild …

Tracking Stellar Activity Enhancements Due To A Close-In Giant Planet In The Hd 179949 System, Levent Gurdemir

Physics Theses - Archive

We monitored CaII H and K lines (3933Å and 3968Å) of the HD 179949 system to study Planet Induced Emission (PIE) as an effect of star-planet interaction. We obtained high resolution spectra (R > 50,000) with high signal-to-noise ratio (S/N > 50 in the Ca II H and K cores) during 10 nights of observation at the McDonald Observatory. Wide band Echelle spectra covering full optical bandwidth (3,400-10,900Å) were obtained using 2.7 m Harlan J. Smith Telescope located at Mt. Locke. Detailed statistical analyses performed both for H and K cores of calcium to reveal the nature of the fluctuation in the …

Cs 790-01: Knowledge Representation For The Semantic Web, Pascal Hitzler

Computer Science & Engineering Syllabi

Semantic Web is a maturing field of technology that continues to be the emphasis of much focused research and industrial investigation. The central idea behind Semantic Web is to enhance data on the World Wide Web by so-called metadata, which describes the meaning (semantics) of the data and thus makes it available for processing in intelligent systems. In this course we cover in depth the standardized knowledge representation languages for expressing metadata, called ontology languages. We will in particular cover the Resource Description Framework RDF and the Web Ontology Language OWL, both of which are recommended standards by the World …
