In Praise Of Irrationality: Self, "East" And "West" In Greek Teachers' Speeches On National Day Commemorations, Lucianna Benincasa Sep 2010

In Praise Of Irrationality: Self, "East" And "West" In Greek Teachers' Speeches On National Day Commemorations, Lucianna Benincasa

The Qualitative Report

In this qualitative study of school discourse on national day commemorations, focus is on the "social creativity strategies" through which group members can improve their social identity. Discourse analysis was carried out on thirty-nine teachers' speeches delivered in Greek schools between 1998 and 2004. The speakers scorn rationality and logic, stereotypically attributed to "the West" (a "West" which is perceived not to include Greece), as cold and not human. The Greeks' successful national struggles are presented instead as the result of irrationality. They claim irrationality to be the most human and thus the most valuable quality, which places Greece first …

Nationhood And Women In Postcolonial African Literature, Elda Hungwe, Chipo Hungwe Sep 2010

Nationhood And Women In Postcolonial African Literature, Elda Hungwe, Chipo Hungwe

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In their article "Nationhood and Women in Postcolonial African Literature" Elda Hungwe and Chipo Hungwe, through an analysis of Pepetela's Mayombe, Achebe's Anthills of the Savannah, and Ngugi's Petals of Blood discuss nationhood and nation in postcolonial African literature within the framework of the postcolonial theory. Postcolonial theory negates master narratives of nation and nationhood, hence it deconstructs such narratives as problematic. Hungwe and Hungwe discuss problems associated with definitions of nation where groups or members are peripheralized. While Hungwe and Hungwe acknowledge that nationalism served a critical role during decolonization, their conclusion is that in postcolonial Africa notions of …

(Wp 2010-01) The Role Of Primary Commodities In Economic Development: Sub-Saharan Africa Versus Rest Of The World, Fabrizio Carmignani, Abdur Chowdhury Sep 2010

(Wp 2010-01) The Role Of Primary Commodities In Economic Development: Sub-Saharan Africa Versus Rest Of The World, Fabrizio Carmignani, Abdur Chowdhury

Economics Working Papers

We study the nexus between natural resources and growth in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) and find that SSA is indeed special: resources dependence retards growth in SSA, but not elsewhere. The natural resources curse is thus specific to SSA. We then show that this specificity does not depend on the type of primary commodities on which SSA specializes. Instead, the SSA specificity appears to arise from the interaction between institutions and natural resources.

The Four Key Factors That Drive Successful Decisions, Joseph Yeager, Linda Sommer Sep 2010

The Four Key Factors That Drive Successful Decisions, Joseph Yeager, Linda Sommer

The Qualitative Report

The mechanisms of language operate as the vehicles for motivation, thinking and deciding. Language is a replica, a model, a representational map of reality. In the same way that a flawed roadmap will misrepresent reality and mislead a traveler, a flawed linguistic rationale will mislead a decision maker in any situation. In high-stakes situations that occur in globalized organizations, such as the current economic meltdown, the importance and consequences of flawed linguistic rationales are obvious. Simple suggestions for self examination of linguistic rationales are offered.

China And Geography In The 21st Century: A Cultural (Geographical) Revolution?, Lily Kong Sep 2010

China And Geography In The 21st Century: A Cultural (Geographical) Revolution?, Lily Kong

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

A noted Singapore-based cultural geographer and specialist on Asia reviews the recent emergence of cultural geographic research on and within China and the implications of China's rise for the study of 21st century cultural geography more broadly. She identifies six major issues modern China is confronting that, when addressed from a cultural geographical perspective, may both enhance an understanding of the country and reshape the practice of cultural geography as a subdiscipline: agricultural reform, economic reform, urban change, rural-urban migration and related social inequalities, the changing family structure, and environmental change. The author argues that if China's cultural geography is …

Self And Other: Continental And Classical Chinese Thought, Steven Burik Sep 2010

Self And Other: Continental And Classical Chinese Thought, Steven Burik

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Traditionally, metaphysical notions of self and other presuppose a dualism that underlies much of Western philosophy. This dualism is opposed by accounts of self and other in recent continental philosophy and classical Chinese philosophy, which I compare. I argue that the self is seen in continental and Chinese thought as embedded in (ethical) relations and language, and not as transcendent or prior in the metaphysical sense to them. I argue for this by focussing on three themes: self and language, self as relational and embedded in the world or contextual environment, and self and the particular other. These three themes …

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

This position paper proposes that the study of embodied cognitive agents, such as humanoid robots, can advance our understanding of the cognitive development of complex sensorimotor, linguistic, and social learning skills. This in turn will benefit the design of cognitive robots capable of learning to handle and manipulate objects and tools autonomously, to cooperate and communicate with other robots and humans, and to adapt their abilities to changing internal, environmental, and social conditions. Four key areas of research challenges are discussed, specifically for the issues related to the understanding of: 1) how agents learn and represent compositional actions; 2) how …

The Relationship Between The Percentage Of African-American Teachers On Public School Secondary Campuses And The Percentage Of African-American Students Passing The Texas Assessment Of Knowledge And Skills Test (Taks), Victor S. Nixon Sep 2010

The Relationship Between The Percentage Of African-American Teachers On Public School Secondary Campuses And The Percentage Of African-American Students Passing The Texas Assessment Of Knowledge And Skills Test (Taks), Victor S. Nixon

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

No Child Left Behind has caused educators to take a critical look at the achievement levels of all population groups on campus. African-American student achievement can no longer be masked by the achievement levels of other student populations. Educators must develop strategies to reduce the African-American achievement gap in order to meet Adequate Yearly Progress. This study examined the relationship between the percentage of African-American teachers on secondary Texas campuses and African-American student achievement. Academic achievement was measured by the use of the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills Test (TAKS). The American College Test (ACT) and the Scholastic Aptitude …

On Challenges In Evaluating Malware Clustering, Peng Li, Limin Liu, Debin Gao, Michael K Reiter Sep 2010

On Challenges In Evaluating Malware Clustering, Peng Li, Limin Liu, Debin Gao, Michael K Reiter

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Malware clustering and classification are important tools that enable analysts to prioritize their malware analysis efforts. The recent emergence of fully automated methods for malware clustering and classification that report high accuracy suggests that this problem may largely be solved. In this paper, we report the results of our attempt to confirm our conjecture that the method of selecting ground-truth data in prior evaluations biases their results toward high accuracy. To examine this conjecture, we apply clustering algorithms from a different domain (plagiarism detection), first to the dataset used in a prior work's evaluation and then to a wholly new …

The Long Good-Bye: Why B. F. Skinner's Verbal Behavior Is Alive And Well On The 50th Anniversary Of Its Publication, Henry D. Schlinger Jr. Aug 2010

The Long Good-Bye: Why B. F. Skinner's Verbal Behavior Is Alive And Well On The 50th Anniversary Of Its Publication, Henry D. Schlinger Jr.

The Psychological Record

The year 2007 marked the 50th anniversary of the publication of B. F. Skinner’s Verbal Behavior, a book that by Skinner’s own account was his most important. The received view, however, is that a devastating review by a young linguist not only rendered Skinner’s interpretation of language moot but was also a major factor in ending the hegemony of behaviorism in psychology and paving the way for a cognitive revolution. Nevertheless, in taking stock of Verbal Behavior and behaviorism, both appear to be thriving. This article suggests that Verbal Behavior and behaviorism remain vital partly because they have generated successful …

Improving Bilingual Service Delivery In Catholic Schools Through Two-Way Immersion, Martin Scanlan, Gareth Zehrbach Aug 2010

Improving Bilingual Service Delivery In Catholic Schools Through Two-Way Immersion, Martin Scanlan, Gareth Zehrbach

Journal of Catholic Education

Catholic elementary schools underserve Latino students, especially those who are bilingual. This paper presents a conceptual argument for Catholic elementary schools to improve this by pursuing the two-way immersion model of bilingual service delivery in Spanish and English. The argument is presented in three stages. First, we show that Catholic elementary schools underserve Latino families in general, and bilingual Latino students with limited profi ciency in English in particular. Next, we present evidence from research literature and a case study that the two-way immersion approach to bilingual service delivery is philosophically and functionally well suited for Catholic schooling. We conclude …

Tension And Critical Thinking In Art, Marnie A. Jain Aug 2010

Tension And Critical Thinking In Art, Marnie A. Jain

Critical and Creative Thinking Capstones Collection

This paper is a discussion about the existence, purpose, and use of tension in works of art. It does not take the form of standard papers, but is written as an interview where I am both the interviewer and interviewee. As the interviewee I am an artist and researcher of this topic. As the interviewer, I challenge myself to support my assertions with examples, and I try and catch myself in contradictions, and ask for clarifications. Similar to conversations we have in the classrooms of the Critical and Creative Thinking Graduate Program, the discussion in this paper does not cease …

Propositional Names, Ryan Christensen Aug 2010

Propositional Names, Ryan Christensen

Philosophy Faculty Publications

I propose that an adequate name for a proposition will be (1) rigid, in Kripke’s sense of referring to the same thing in every world in which it exists, and (2) transparent, which means that it would be possible, if one knows the name, to know which object the name refers. I then argue that the Standard Way of naming propositions—prefixing the word ‘that’ to a declarative sentence—does not allow for transparent names of every proposition, and that no alternative naming convention does better. I explore the implications of this failure for deflationism about truth, arguing that any theory that …

Teacher’S Scaffolding Moves In Communication Strategies In Secondary School Efl Classes, Wahyu Usadiati Aug 2010

Teacher’S Scaffolding Moves In Communication Strategies In Secondary School Efl Classes, Wahyu Usadiati

Bahasa dan Seni: Jurnal Bahasa, Sastra, Seni, dan Pengajarannya

Teachers have their own strategies in communicating their messages in EFL classes. The strategies may be in the form of verbal and nonverbal signals to get the message through to the students. The results of the study show that scaffolding moves were mostly used by the teacher, consisting of organizing and maintaining student’s interest and motivation, modeling, code switching, explaining or elaborating, eliciting student’s response, checking student’s comprehension, and providing wait time. Non-verbal signals always occur for the accompaniment of the verbalization of the teacher’s messages.

Konstruksi Semantis Kata Pada Perkembangan Bahasa Indonesia Anak, Wahyu Sukartiningsih Aug 2010

Konstruksi Semantis Kata Pada Perkembangan Bahasa Indonesia Anak, Wahyu Sukartiningsih

Bahasa dan Seni: Jurnal Bahasa, Sastra, Seni, dan Pengajarannya

The aim of this study is to determine the semantic construction in Indone- sian language by pre-school-age children. The present research consisted of a longitudinal study of five pre-school-age children. The study of these five children is based on the developmental psycholinguistic and semantic-pragmatic studies. To collect the data, we used the observation, recording, and interview technique. The results show that the semantic construction of word meaning in Indonesian language by pre-school-age children consisted of: (1) over-specification, (2) overgeneraliza- tion, (3) intersection, (4) towards meaning spesification, and (5) meaning associa- tion. Overgeneralization and intersection dominated language development by child- ren …

Proses Fonologis Bahasa Jawa: Kajian Teori Optimalitas, Agus Subiyanto Aug 2010

Proses Fonologis Bahasa Jawa: Kajian Teori Optimalitas, Agus Subiyanto

Bahasa dan Seni: Jurnal Bahasa, Sastra, Seni, dan Pengajarannya

This paper aims to discuss phonological processes in Javanese, which are phonologically and syntactically conditioned. By using the Optimality Theory (OT), the relation between the input (phonemic form) and the output (phonetic form) involved in phonological processes will be explained. The data used in this paper are taken from a Javanese native speaker of Semarang dialect. In addition, this paper also used intuitive data from the writer, who is also a Javanese native speaker of Semarang dialect. The result of the analysis shows that OT is relevant to explain the phonological processes in Javanese such as a deletion of voiceless …

Pembelajaran Model Circuit Training Untuk Meningkatkan Kompetensi Gramatikal-Leksikal Mahasiswa Bahasa Jerman, Rosyidah Rosyidah

Bahasa dan Seni: Jurnal Bahasa, Sastra, Seni, dan Pengajarannya

This article reports on a research aimed at improving the students’ grammatical-lexical competence using learning model circuit training. The subjects were the students of the German Department who took part in the lecture Struktur und Wortschatz 1 Off AA in 2009. The results show that the process consists of four main phases: motivation, going around, training, and presenting; and the actions had the effects: all students were totally active and75 % of the students could present the learning materials correctly, the average point at the end of the second cycle (70,58) can be regarded as successful.
