Effects Of Delayed Auditory Feedback On Young Infants’ Crying, Sarah M. Sanborn
Effects Of Delayed Auditory Feedback On Young Infants’ Crying, Sarah M. Sanborn
Master's Theses
Neural control of newborn crying has typically been considered to originate primarily in the lower brain centers, although support for this assumption is limited. To address this, the present study manipulated newborn infants’ perceptual experience during a cry bout through use of delayed auditory feedback (DAF). Atypical cry productions during DAF would suggest that newborn crying is under higher levels of cortical control than previously assumed. Infants’ spontaneous crying was recorded for 2 minutes at 4 weeks of age (n=16) and again at 8 weeks of age (n=17) using an ABA design, alternating synchronous feedback with DAF. Standard repeated-measures 2 …

Theses and Dissertations
A team of Brigham Young University graduate students working under the supervision of Dr. Lynn Henrichsen, collaborated on the creation of a book as well as a website, Basic Training and Resources for Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (BTR-TESOL). The project, which will be developed in phases over the coming years, is intended to provide novice English as a Second Language (ESL) teachers with some introductory material on nearly fifty different topics related to the field. Each unit is not intended to be a comprehensive source and is not to be seen as a replacement for formal training. …

Isolationism, Internationalism And The “Other:” The Yellow Peril, Mad Brute And Red Menace In Early To Mid Twentieth Century Pulp Magazines And Comic Books, Nathan Vernon Madison
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis’ purpose is to demonstrate, via the examination of popular youth literature (primarily pulp magazines and comic books) from the 1920s through to the 1950s, that the stories found therein drew their definitions of heroism and villainy from an overarching, nativist fear of outsiders that had existed before the Great War, but intensified afterwards. These depictions were transferred to America’s “new” enemies following both the United States’ entry into the Second World War, as well as the early stages of the Cold War. This transference of nativist imagery left behind the ethnically-based origins of such depictions, showing that racism …
Assessing Multicultural Art Education: What Approaches Are Currently Being Used In Virginia Public High Schools?, Laura Nichols
Assessing Multicultural Art Education: What Approaches Are Currently Being Used In Virginia Public High Schools?, Laura Nichols
Theses and Dissertations
This study utilized a survey of Virginia public high school teachers to examine how teachers understand multicultural education, how frequently they teach from this perspective, what cultures are represented, what teaching strategies they use, and what, if any incentives would encourage them to teach in this way more frequently. Through analysis of the findings, three major themes emerged which describe participants’ views of the purpose of multicultural education. These themes are “exposure” to other cultures, “understanding” of the way cultures interact and of the context surrounding a culture’s art, and promoting “equity” in the classroom environment and by encouraging students …
A Case Study Of The Impact Of Filmmaker Decisions In The Construction Of A Documentary: Helen Whitney's (2007) The Mormons, Elizabeth Joy Mott
A Case Study Of The Impact Of Filmmaker Decisions In The Construction Of A Documentary: Helen Whitney's (2007) The Mormons, Elizabeth Joy Mott
Theses and Dissertations
Informed by theories of media framing, exemplification, and non-fiction film production, this case study used as its sample for textual analysis the typed transcripts from the final cut of Helen Whitney's (2007) documentary film, The Mormons, and the interview transcripts of the 15 key commentators interviewed for the documentary. These theories suggest that (a) media producers condense topics in the media by selecting information that connects news stories to a larger context and imbues them with symbolic value; (b) verbal and visual examples have been shown to be more easily retrieved in memory than abstract ideas and are consequently …
Action Research: Can It Be A Means For Helping Teacher Candidates Learn About Student Diversity?, Alisa Bates, Laura S. Pardo
Action Research: Can It Be A Means For Helping Teacher Candidates Learn About Student Diversity?, Alisa Bates, Laura S. Pardo
i.e.: inquiry in education
This paper describes the use of action research in a teacher education course as a way to support novice teachers in meeting the learning needs of a diverse student population. Our experiences as instructors in teacher education courses led us to look for strategies that could support novices’ attempts to meet students’ diverse needs because students viewed this as one of their greatest challenges as beginning teachers. We explore action research as one such strategy to respond to this learning need. We examine this practice for supporting novice teachers and consider three cases of student learning as examples. Our findings …
Quintessential Acts Of Inquiry In Educational Practice: Delineating Inquiry And Interpretation In The Pursuit Of Teacher Professionalization, Ted Purinton
i.e.: inquiry in education
Sociological and political theories on the professions indicate that established professions utilize unique forms of inquiry and interpretation to guide practice. This essay argues that for teaching to become professionalized, unique forms of inquiry and interpretation need to be emphasized. Utilizing the concept of professional jurisdiction, the essay argues that other professions' forms of inquiry, while not detrimental to the purpose of teacher professionalization, do not establish the distinctive skills upon which teachers can lay claim.
The Concept Of Value In Design Practice - An Interview Study, Katarina Wetter Edman
The Concept Of Value In Design Practice - An Interview Study, Katarina Wetter Edman
ServDes Conference Series
Use and the value thereof are implicit in the design discourse and therefore rarely explicitly spoken of; although they are at the core of design practice. With the recent turn to a service dominant logic perspective; the service marketing discourse opens up for understanding value as value-in-use and value-in-context. This paper empirically explores and describes ways in which professional designers themselves express “value-in-use”. The findings suggest that professional designers do not focus explicitly on value as a standalone concept; but conceptualize value-in-use through contextualization and an extensive use of emotions.

Series Books And Their Effect On Reader Development, Dana Randisi
Education Masters
This study was conducted to determine the impact that series books have on developing reading skills and motivation. Data was collected through interviews with three teachers, observations of three secondgraders‟ book choices, and analysis of three different book series. The data showed that book series are widely read across grade levels and are useful in developing comprehension and fluency skills. The study implies that book series can provide many benefits to developing readers, but that it is important to use the appropriate level of book with each reader to prevent higher-level readers from holding themselves back. The research also shows …

A Heuristic Investigation Of Intuition In Dance/Movement Therapy Practice, Jessica Melville Goodin
A Heuristic Investigation Of Intuition In Dance/Movement Therapy Practice, Jessica Melville Goodin
Creative Arts Therapies Theses
This thesis is a heuristic examination of my experience of intuition as a new dance/movement therapist. The purpose of this investigation was to provide an inceptive inroad into the little explored but recently popular subject of intuition, specifically as it relates to dance/movement therapy and the use of the dance therapist’s intuition as a therapeutic resource. Creating a journal that captured my contemplation of intuition and my experiences of intuition, both in clinical dance/movement therapy work and in creative and personal experiences, was the primary method of data collection. My journaling was augmented by interviews with two practicing dance therapists. …

The Bonded Labor System In Nepal: Exploring Halia And Kamaiya Children’S Life-Worlds, Birendra R. Giri
The Bonded Labor System In Nepal: Exploring Halia And Kamaiya Children’S Life-Worlds, Birendra R. Giri
HIMALAYA, the Journal of the Association for Nepal and Himalayan Studies
Nepal is believed to have thousands of bonded laborers under the so-called haliya and kamaiya systems. The latter was outlawed in 2000 and the former in 2008, following a widespread campaign by local organisations, including the bonded laborers themselves. While state intervention has reportedly discouraged adults from forging an annual haliya or kamaiya contract, even the so-called “systematic rehabilitation” of “freed” kamaiya families has not been entirely successful in offering long-term livelihood alternatives. As a result, patchy reports suggest that children are increasingly taking the jobs done by their parents or elders. This study, which focuses on Musahar and Tharu …
Making A Case For Arts Administrators: Maintaining Interdisciplinary Arts Programs In Public Schools, Samantha Jardon-Peppard
Making A Case For Arts Administrators: Maintaining Interdisciplinary Arts Programs In Public Schools, Samantha Jardon-Peppard
Graduate Theses
For decades interdisciplinary arts programs have been developed and implemented in public schools throughout our nation. Much research has been dedicated to proving the benefits of interdisciplinary arts education, results of which can be found in reports such as Champions of Change and Project Zero. However, little research has been dedicated to how an interdisciplinary arts program is maintained in a school once it has been initiated and who is responsible for its development and sustainability. Chapter one of this thesis reviews some history of arts education, why the arts have become a vital part of education, and how arts …
Developing Alphabetic Knowledge In A School-To-Home Project With Students Who Are At-Risk: Literature Review, Julie Ann Armstrong
Developing Alphabetic Knowledge In A School-To-Home Project With Students Who Are At-Risk: Literature Review, Julie Ann Armstrong
Early and Special Education Graduate Projects and Theses
Literacy skills are developing in children from the time they are born and should be nurtured during the preschool years (Joint Position Statement, 2005). There are important literacy skill sets for children to acquire to be competent readers. The 2009 National Early Literacy Panel has defined one of these skills as alphabetic knowledge (Bell & Westberg, 2009). Alphabetic knowledge is being able to recognize and name letters and their sounds. The research shows that mastery of alphabetic skills is required before children can engage successfully in phonemic awareness. (Bara, Gentaz & Cole, 2007). Parents can facilitate their child’s mastery of …
Machiguenga Mobilization In The Peruvian Amazon: An Analysis Of Comaru As An Effective Change Agent, Casey Shannon Harrington
Machiguenga Mobilization In The Peruvian Amazon: An Analysis Of Comaru As An Effective Change Agent, Casey Shannon Harrington
Geography Capstone Projects
COMARU (Consejo Machiguenga del Río Urubamba) is an indigenous organization that promotes the rights of thirty native Amazonian communities in the face of the Camisea Project, a massive natural gas extraction project. The state has consistently ignored negative health, environmental, and cultural impacts from five spills that have occurred in the natural gas pipeline, and the communities the right of consultation granted to them in the International Labor Organization’s Convention 169. This paper, using interviews with Machiguenga community members and COMARU leadership in addition to political ecology scholarship, analyzes the success of COMARU’s politicized and depoliticized strategies. Through the use …
Civilization And Competition: Study Societies And State Formation In Late Qing China, Hon-Fai Chen
Civilization And Competition: Study Societies And State Formation In Late Qing China, Hon-Fai Chen
Global Asia Journal
The institutional platforms that supported activist intellectuals seeking to inaugurate political and cultural modernity through the formation of study societies (xuehui) proliferated throughout the late Qing China (ca. 1895-1911). While existing studies either subsume this distinctive phenomenon under the political programs of reform and revolutionary movements or conceive it as a kind of the prototypical formation of civil society and the public sphere in late Qing China, they seldom question the meanings and functions of ‘civilization,” “society” and “civility” as the constitutive and highly contested notions underlying the cultural and political practices of these study societies. This paper argues that …
Citizen Participation, Metadiscourse And Accountability: A Public Hearing On A Zoning Change For Wal-Mart, Richard Buttny
Citizen Participation, Metadiscourse And Accountability: A Public Hearing On A Zoning Change For Wal-Mart, Richard Buttny
Communication and Rhetorical Studies - All Scholarship
During a contentious public hearing on a zoning change for Wal-Mart, participants at times moved to a metadiscursive level with utterances such as, “expect to be listened to,” “I have a question,” or reading quotes of Town Board members from the newspaper. Such metadiscursive references allow participants to attempt to structure, or depart, from the public hearing format. Metadiscursive references also work to criticize their opponents’ speech or the process. Metadiscourse has the consequence of contextualizing the participation framework of the hearing as to topic, length of presentation, and mode of interaction. From a normative perspective, metadiscourse is used to …

History Graduate Projects and Theses
The Conservation in Idaho Oral History Project: Oral Historiography, Process and Practice, is a combination of analytical and practical application and overview of the field of oral history. The analytical overview identifies the two major themes in oral history, academic and community, by analyzing the scholarship, including criticisms and progress of the field. It examines the different methodological approaches to oral history as well as the multidisciplinary use of the field. It also examines the process that the author went through when researching, conducting and interpreting her own oral histories for the Conservation in Idaho Oral History Project. Lastly, this …

Issue 01: Backgrounder On Health And Safety For Migrant Farmworkers In Canada, Janet Mclaughlin, Jenna Hennebry
International Migration Research Centre
Annually, approximately 30,000 migrant farmworkers come to work across Canada from countries such as Mexico, Jamaica, Guatemala, the Philippines and Thailand through Canada’s Seasonal Agricultural Workers Program (SAWP) and the Pilot Project for Occupations Requiring Lower Levels of Formal Training (NOC C and D). Their health and safety has long been a neglected area of research, but several recent studies have now shed light on some important issues of concern. Despite these studies’ diverse contexts (Ontario and British Columbia) and methods (quantitative questionnaires and qualitative ethnography) the similar findings in each study demonstrate consistent patterns. The purpose of this backgrounder …

Reading Into Race: Unsettled Reading And The Performance Of"Race", Julie Burton Swift
Reading Into Race: Unsettled Reading And The Performance Of"Race", Julie Burton Swift
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Reading, race, and the primary productive link between the two--performativity--are the subject of this dissertation. By reading the formative discourse of phrenology and Ethnology, as well as nineteenth-century textbooks which teach reading, I suggest a context in which reading operates as an expressive framework for the problematics of race. In considering selected works of Edgar Allan Poe, Frederick Douglass, Harriet Jacobs, and Herman Melville, I examine the uses to which reading is put, not only to elaborate, but to perform race. By looking at unsettled reading--breakdowns of reading, failures to read, readings that prove unaccountable to the text--I emphasize the …
