The Unprecedented Event: Acknowledging Badiou’S Challenge To Art And Its Education, Jan Jagodzinski Jan 2010

The Unprecedented Event: Acknowledging Badiou’S Challenge To Art And Its Education, Jan Jagodzinski

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

In terms of this year’s journal theme, ”unprecedented,” there is no other contemporary philosopher who has a more radical notion than Alain Badiou when it comes to theorizing the new; that is, the emergence of an unprecedented Event ex nihilio—not novel or innovative, but free of the authority of any prior example—to make a truth claim. For art educators, especially for the Social Caucus, Badiou offers a challenge to what has largely captured the theoretical writing in this journal — namely aesthetics and representation. As well intentioned as these theorizations have been concerning identity politics and critical theory stemming from …

Language Skills And Social Integration: Ethnic Disparities In Bilingual Economy, Ott S. Toomet, Jaanika Meriküll Jan 2010

Language Skills And Social Integration: Ethnic Disparities In Bilingual Economy, Ott S. Toomet, Jaanika Meriküll

2010

We analyze the relationship between the local language skills and immigrant income in a largely bilingual economy, Estonia. We show that the official language matters little in the private sector, and at the upper end of the income distribution. This is in a striking contrast to what has been found in the literature for single-language dominated economies. Our results point toward importance of co-worker discrimination, possibly through the more subtle aspects of language, or through access to the social networks. This outcome stresses the need of social integration of minorities, and suggest that this does not necessarily happen through the …

Learning Disabled Student Needs Met Through Curriculum Redesign Of The Illinois Agricultural Education Core Curriculum, Seburn L. Pense, Dennis G. Watson, Dexter B. Wakefield Jan 2010

Learning Disabled Student Needs Met Through Curriculum Redesign Of The Illinois Agricultural Education Core Curriculum, Seburn L. Pense, Dennis G. Watson, Dexter B. Wakefield

Articles

This quasi–experimental pilot study included agricultural education students with Specific Learning Disabilities (SLD) in five high schools in the federally designated economically distressed area called the Illinois Delta Region. A unit of instruction taken from the existing 165 units of The Illinois Core Curriculum for Agriculture was redesigned in a manner appropriate to SLD students. Students from the five selected programs were randomly assigned to treatment and control groups. Results from pre– and posttests in this study found the redesigned curriculum for SLD students effectively increased learning for both SLD and traditional students.

Casino Capers: Exploring The Aesthetics Of Superfluidity, Mary Stokrocki, Bianne Castillo, Michael Delahunt, Laurie Eldridge, Martin Koreck

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

Casinos are fast becoming sites for display of new Native American (NA) Arts. In such a context, casinos re-represent themselves and their communities through various visual forms and thus change their meanings. In her study of Wisconsin casinos, Stuhr (2004) challenged art educators to consider these visual culture displays as they accommodate new markets. Art in the casino phenomenon is worth investigating and how art educators can explore and/or make sense of this phenomenon is important. Casinos are using artworks as spectacles of pleasure. According to a casino gambling survey conducted by Harrah’s Entertainment, approximately 40 million Americans played slot …

‘Image’ / ‘I’ / ‘Nation’: A Cultural Mash-Up, Matthew Sutherlin, Amy Counts Jan 2010

‘Image’ / ‘I’ / ‘Nation’: A Cultural Mash-Up, Matthew Sutherlin, Amy Counts

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

The term Un(precedent)ED conjures ‘images’ that have never been seen before in education. Too often in the classroom we focus on the classification of objects and practices. The metaphysical question “what is?” is important only in that it must be continually revisited. Through continual re-visitation, the question becomes “what can it be?” Unfortunately, the process of becoming through imagination is a practice that is often relegated to childish whimsy. Un(precedent)ED practice requires the (re)imaging of the current apparatus of education. Precedent is a standard or model that comes before a particular event or moment; components, such as sound, written text, …

Chicana/Latina Undergraduate Cultural Capital: Surviving And Thriving In Higher Education, Maricela Demirjyn Jan 2010

Chicana/Latina Undergraduate Cultural Capital: Surviving And Thriving In Higher Education, Maricela Demirjyn

Ethnic Studies Review

This study addressed the retention of Chicana/Latina undergraduates. The problem explored was one; how these women perceive campus climate as members of a marginalized student population and two; which strategies are used to "survive the system." As a qualitative study, this work was guided by a confluence of methods including grounded theory, phenomenology and Chicana epistemology using educational narratives as data. The analysis indicated that Chicanas/Latinas do maintain a sense of being "Other" throughout their college experiences and this self-identity is perceived as a "survival strategy" while attending a mainstream campus. Further analysis also showed that Chicanas/Latinas begin their college …

A Novel Image Processing Platform Development For Preprocessing Images With Two-Phase Microstructures Containing Isolated Particles, Yuxiu Zhang Jan 2010

A Novel Image Processing Platform Development For Preprocessing Images With Two-Phase Microstructures Containing Isolated Particles, Yuxiu Zhang

Wayne State University Theses

A novel image processing platform is developed in this thesis for pre-processing the images of two-phase microstructures containing isolated particles based on Matlab®. The two phases in this work represent martensite particles and ferrite matrix in Dual Phase steels that are developed for lightweight automotive body structures. An automated image processing tool is useful for obtaining statistical microstructure characteristics, important for better understanding material's deformation and fracture behavior. However, a generalized commercial software can not automatically realize the microstructural features of special interest, and a user-specified pre-processing tool is needed.

This platform utilizes the Matlab® GUI technique, Matlab image processing …

The Black Death And The Future Of Medicine, Sarah Frances Vanneste Jan 2010

The Black Death And The Future Of Medicine, Sarah Frances Vanneste

Wayne State University Theses

ABSTRACT

THE BLACK DEATH AND THE FUTURE OF MEDICINE

by

SARAH FRANCES VANNESTE

May 2010

Advisor: Dr. Hans Hummer

Major: History

Degree: Master of Arts

The Black Death was a catastrophic event in Europe's history. It had both devastating immediate effects and deep long-term consequences. Historians, however, have not agreed on the extent of the Black Death's effects on the development of medicine and medical practices in Europe. Some historians credit it with revealing the general failure of medieval medicine and directly sparking a reassessment and reformation of medical practices, while other historians minimize its effects on medicine or omit …

Un Peacekeeping: A Sheep In Wolves Clothing? Review Of Un Peacekeeping In Lebanon, Somalia And Kosovo: Operational And Legal Issues In Practice, Jeremy I. Levitt

Journal Publications

Scholars and practitioners have been debating the legal and operational aspects of UN military operations since its enforcement actions in North Korea in 1950 and the Congo in 1960 (UN Operation in the Congo [ONUC]). Since then, the UN Security Council (UNSC) has authorized some semblance of enforcement action in Kuwait, Somalia, the former Yugoslavia, Kosovo, East Timor and Albania, and authorized, sanctioned or co-deployed forces in Liberia, Sierra Leone, the Central African Republic, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Coˆte d’Ivoire and Sudan. The scholarly literature is abundant with analysis of nearly every aspect of peacekeeping and peace enforcement …

Predrag Matvejević’S Mediterranean Breviary: Nostalgia For An “Ex-World” Or Breviary For A New Community?, Anna Botta

Italian Studies: Faculty Publications

In recent years, the declining importance of the nation-state and an increase in globalization have encouraged scholars to move towards the borderless world of seas and oceans, giving special attention to their diasporic movements of people and goods. Lately, this “new thalassology” has witnessed an outburst of Mediterranean studies. Yet the resurgence of the Mediterranean in the postmodern, anti-nationalistic arena must be critically assessed. The risk in such studies is a reinforcing of old stereotypes, what the anthropologist Michael Herzfeld calls “Mediterraneism.” The present article highlights the work of two scholars and one writer who alert us to the manifold …

A Brief History Of Coptic Personal Status Law, Ryan Rowberry, John Khalil Jan 2010

A Brief History Of Coptic Personal Status Law, Ryan Rowberry, John Khalil

Faculty Publications By Year

Coptic Christians comprise the largest non-Muslim population in Egypt (12-17% of Egypt’s total population). For over a millennium, the Coptic Church has administered and adjudicated personal status matters (i.e., family law) for its members using Biblically-based principles that are vastly different from those of Shari’a Law. The Egyptian government, however, has advocated for a universal right of divorce for all Egyptians modeled on Shari’a Law, a development that would significantly impact Coptic Personal Status Law. * Using interviews conducted with Coptic bishops, priests, and parishioners in Egypt, along with primary and secondary sources, this article traces the development of Coptic …

The Transformation Of La Prueba De Los Ingenios Into Labyrinth Of Desire: Adapting Lope De Vega For A Contemporary American Audience, Delys Ostlund Jan 2010

The Transformation Of La Prueba De Los Ingenios Into Labyrinth Of Desire: Adapting Lope De Vega For A Contemporary American Audience, Delys Ostlund

World Languages and Literatures Faculty Publications and Presentations

Women’s equality, cross dressing, homoerotic desire—all the makings of a twenty-firstcentury comedy—were the focus of a seventeenth century play by Lope de Vega, La prueba de los ingenios (1612?-1613?). In the last two decades, interest in this work has increased considerably. Evidence of the rising popularity of the play is an English-language adaptation by Caridad Svich, which she titled The Labyrinth of Desire. The professional production at Miracle Theatre is the focus of this study. After a brief discussion of the homoerotic theme of the work and general issues of the translation and/or adaptation of the Comedia, I will then …

Imagination And Choice, Anne Dailey Jan 2010

Imagination And Choice, Anne Dailey

Faculty Articles and Papers

Contemporary behavioral legal scholarship on individual decisionmaking draws primarily from cognitive psychology. This Article argues that the field of behavioral legal scholarship should be broadened to include modern psychoanalytic ideas about the processes of individual decisionmaking. As explained here, the basic perspective of psychoanalytic psychology is largely compatible with recent cognitive research on decisionmaking. However, a psychoanalytic perspective adds valuable nuance and complexity by exposing for scholarly examination certain essential attributes of individual decisionmaking that have so far been overlooked. As a first step in bringing modern psychoanalytic ideas to the attention of contemporary behavioral legal scholars, this Article examines …

An Examination Of Instructional Interactions Between Volunteer-Tutors And Students Who Show Differential Gains In Reading Comprehension, Laurie J. Newcomer

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

It is essential to provide high quality interventions designed to improve struggling readers' reading comprehension while making use of limited resources. This study explored, through an holistic, multiple-case study design, volunteer-student interactions and activities in an after school reading program utilizing minimally-trained volunteers. The purpose of this research was to explore and describe factors that differentiated the volunteers working with students who made larger or smaller gains in reading comprehension

Mobile Technologies & Socio-Economic Opportunities For Disadvantaged Women : A Study Of Information Behavior In A Developing Nation Context, Devendra Dilip Potnis Jan 2010

Mobile Technologies & Socio-Economic Opportunities For Disadvantaged Women : A Study Of Information Behavior In A Developing Nation Context, Devendra Dilip Potnis

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Information and communication technologies (ICTs) have been championed by the United Nations and others as one of the key media to open up socio-economic opportunities for disadvantaged populations. Studies lead us to believe that after being introduced to ICTs, users' information behavior changes, enabling them to benefit from socio-economic opportunities. Using Wilson's (1997) Revised General Model of Information Behavior (Model), the dissertation explored the role of cell phones - the fastest spreading information and communication technology (ICT) - in shaping the information behavior of disadvantaged population, with its implications on socio-economic opportunities.

Recovering Brande : Freewriting And Sustainable (Procedural) Expression, Richard Bower Jan 2010

Recovering Brande : Freewriting And Sustainable (Procedural) Expression, Richard Bower

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Dorothea Brande is rarely known in rhetoric and composition yet continues to hold popular influence over writers attracted to Cartesian beliefs. The aim of this project is to recover Brande's contributions in order to rethink composition's trajectories. Chiefly, Dorothea Brande's legacy has been in creative writing through Becoming a Writer. In this bestseller, she establishes a program for putting the Cartesian divide to work. "Writing with the unconscious mind in the ascent," as Brande explains about what Ken Macrorie and Peter Elbow later call freewriting, harnesses the bifurcated consciousness of writers and begins a journey of unification.

Promiscuous Pioneers Of Morality : The Code Of Ethics Of A Secret Service Functionary In Communist Poland As Set By Law And Practice, 1944-1989, Leszek Murat Jan 2010

Promiscuous Pioneers Of Morality : The Code Of Ethics Of A Secret Service Functionary In Communist Poland As Set By Law And Practice, 1944-1989, Leszek Murat

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

In recent years the historical literature on the communist system has grown to significant proportions, yet it has not made a comprehensive attempt to answer the empirical question of how successful communist regimes were in inculcating their moral principles into societies. But the empirical conflict between ethics and realityb is crucial to understanding why communism eventually failed. My dissertation makes the first attempt to juxtapose the communist code of ethics, the morality it preached, and the ideal it championed, with ethical dilemmas, moral transgressions, and legal violations of the "purest of the pure" - communist security functionaries.

The Role Of Grammar Knowledge For Identifying Language Needs, Anne Toolan Rowley Jan 2010

The Role Of Grammar Knowledge For Identifying Language Needs, Anne Toolan Rowley

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

The focus of the study was an interest in discerning the relationship between grammar knowledge and its application for evaluating grammar development at different academic and professional stages. A 3-part questionnaire was completed by first and last semester Communication Sciences and Disorders (CSD) graduate students, and practicing speech-language pathologists (SLPs). The first section gathered data related to educational background, perceptions related to grammar knowledge, and recall of undergraduate instruction on grammar topics. A Grammar Test (GT), which reviewed typically developing grammar elements and sentence structures, and a Language Sample Analysis (LSA) comprised the latter two sections. With this data, the …

GarifunaduáÜ : Cultural Continuity, Change And Resistance In The Garifuna Diaspora, Boyd Malcolm Servio-Mariano Jan 2010

GarifunaduáÜ : Cultural Continuity, Change And Resistance In The Garifuna Diaspora, Boyd Malcolm Servio-Mariano

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

The Garifuna are a diasporic community that positions Yurumein (St. Vincent) at the center of its collective memory, and whose populations primarily reside in Belize, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, and, more recently, in urban centers in the United States. This multi-sited, historio-ethnographic study traces the group's socio-political struggles over time and space against cultural dislocation, ethnic oppression, and culturally destructive forces. It highlights how this population's core principles and forms, Garifunaduáü ("Garifunaness," or the "Garifuna way"), and particularly its central tenet of reciprocity "Aü bu, amürü nu" (roughly translated as "me for you and you for me"), functions on multiple levels …

Bilingual Visual Culture In New York : Socially-Engaged Latina Artists And The Discourse Of Hybridity, Solmerina Aponte Jan 2010

Bilingual Visual Culture In New York : Socially-Engaged Latina Artists And The Discourse Of Hybridity, Solmerina Aponte

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

The purpose of this dissertation is to analyze the aesthetic visual discourse of hybridity manifested in the works of contemporary socially-engaged Latina artists of the New York diaspora. For Latin America and the Caribbean, regions where sociopolitical history has generally exhibited a tumultuous trajectory, the arts have provided a formidable venue for addressing the social concerns engendered by this turbulent history and for studying the creative ways in which artists interpret them. The symbiotic bond created between art and politics would become a cultural force and tradition in the history of struggle that characterizes the countries that are part of …

Examining The Persuasive Effect Of Metaphor Use In Psychotherapy : An Experimental Test Of Contributing Factors, Walter A. Kendall Jan 2010

Examining The Persuasive Effect Of Metaphor Use In Psychotherapy : An Experimental Test Of Contributing Factors, Walter A. Kendall

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Research suggests that metaphors can facilitate attitude change in psychotherapy. Based on social influence theory (Strong, 1968) and the Elaboration Likelihood Model (ELM; Petty & Cacioppo, 1986) of persuasion, this analogue study tested the impact of metaphor use in the context of advice as a therapeutic intervention. In an experimental design, 138 adult participants were randomly assigned to observe a brief videotaped vignette in which a therapist's advice to a client either did or did not include a novel metaphor. After observing the video, participants completed a measure of therapist credibility, the Counselor Rating Form-Short Version (CRF-S; Corrigan & Schmidt, …

The New York State Public School Superintendency : The Effects Of Personal, Career And District Factors On Perceptions Of Job Satisfaction For Women In Superintendent Positions, Eileen L. Camasso

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Women have entered the New York State public school district superintendency in increasing numbers over the past two decades. Traditionally a male dominated field, these women have successfully addressed various personal, career and district factors to obtain these positions. In this study, 121 actively employed women superintendents were surveyed regarding factors that may be contributing to their job satisfaction. Thirty independent variables related to access to the superintendency were analyzed relative to job satisfaction variables. Job satisfaction was measured through overall experience, the likelihood that one would rechoose the superintendency as a career goal, and overall satisfaction with specific responsibilities …
