“Life, It’S Been Said, Is One Big Book…”: One Hundred Years Of Qian Zhongshu, Christopher Rea Jan 2010

“Life, It’S Been Said, Is One Big Book…”: One Hundred Years Of Qian Zhongshu, Christopher Rea

China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012

Headlines about China have been looking the same for some time now. “The China story” always seems to be political: labor riots and their suppression; sabre-rattling over Taiwan and cultural erasure in Tibet; catastrophic earthquakes and official ineptitude; internet censorship and jailed dissidents (the latest being Nobel Peace Prize winner Liu Xiaobo). Even ostensibly good news, such as the Chinese government’s investment in wind power, becomes yet another story about how China is going to eat our lunch.

The Life One Does Not Lead Double Life Narratives And Queer Criminal Codes, Lauren Ariel Fields Jan 2010

The Life One Does Not Lead Double Life Narratives And Queer Criminal Codes, Lauren Ariel Fields

Theses & ETDs

This thesis begins with a history of the legal and linguistic use of homosexuality and explores its impact on three double life narratives from the 1890s: The Picture of Dorian Gray, The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, and the Sherlock Holmes series. These stories share common Gothic elements of crime, secrecy, and blackmail that become metaphorically linked with homosexuality in the public imagination after the conviction of Oscar Wilde for gross indecency. Each chapter will demonstrate how these themes remain conflated with homosexuality over the next one hundred years by comparing each Victorian text to works of …

A Crisis Of Consciousness Volkisch Occultism In Austria And Germany, 1890-1933, Shanna Turner Jan 2010

A Crisis Of Consciousness Volkisch Occultism In Austria And Germany, 1890-1933, Shanna Turner

Theses & ETDs

The nineteenth century saw an occult revival throughout the Western world, but this occult revival impacted Germany uniquely. In the rest of Europe interest in the occult was a fad that died out within a few short years. This was not the case in the German-speaking world, where the social, political and economic atmosphere created conditions particularly well suited to fostering the occult. This thesis analyzes the unique conditions in nineteenth century Austria and Germany that resulted in the vlkisch occult movement and the writers and thinkers who created the ideologies of the movement. One cannot address German occultism without, …

Representing Rwanda Anthropology's Role In Witnessing Genocide, Kaitlyn Collins Jan 2010

Representing Rwanda Anthropology's Role In Witnessing Genocide, Kaitlyn Collins

Theses & ETDs

The academic scholarship available on genocide is limited. Alexander Hinton is one of the few anthropologists who has written extensively about genocide; his writing explores the roles that anthropology can play with respect to genocide from both a preventative and a prescriptive perspective. Using Hintons work as a foundation, this thesis will explore the role that anthropologists can play in preventing genocide, investigating the connections between everyday practices of violence and more extreme derivatives of violence. I will focus my lens on the Rwandan genocide, using this as a template to evaluate anthropologys place in the study of genocide due …

Habla Ingles An Examination Of Programs Of Ell Education In The United States, Mary Lace Guilfoil Jan 2010

Habla Ingles An Examination Of Programs Of Ell Education In The United States, Mary Lace Guilfoil

Theses & ETDs

Due to school accountability legislation such as No Child Left Behind (NCLB), students with limited proficiency in English have become an important part of the education system. Schools must provide these students with special accommodations and show improvement in test scores as a result. However, the federal government provides few guidelines for the types of accommodations that should be made, or the methods of education that should be followed. For this reason, a wide array of programs for English Language Learner (ELL) education are in place in the United States. This thesis aims to investigate some of these different methods …

Anti-Androgyne Feminist Analysis Of The Fin-De-Siecle Androgyne And The Hermaphrodite As A Radical Queer Employment In Visual Culture, Lauren Ondercin Edwards Jan 2010

Anti-Androgyne Feminist Analysis Of The Fin-De-Siecle Androgyne And The Hermaphrodite As A Radical Queer Employment In Visual Culture, Lauren Ondercin Edwards

Theses & ETDs

The fin-de-sicle was a time of social upheaval, especially for men faced with changing gender relations and the rise of feminism. Two figures which arose from this male anxiety about changing gender roles are the Androgyne and the Hermaphrodite. The first part of this paper examines the specific ways that the finde-sicle Androgynea supposedly asexual, transcendent, feminized male figurereassures male superiority over women by maintaining power in male the male body and excluding women from creativity and eroticism. I then compare the Western conception of the Androgyne to another literary and artistic figure, the Hermaphrodite, as depicted by Decadent artists …

Architecture Of Affectation The Transformative Activity Of Networked Technology, Jason Scaglione Jan 2010

Architecture Of Affectation The Transformative Activity Of Networked Technology, Jason Scaglione

Theses & ETDs

This paper attempts to address the emerging realm of social technology in connection with a philosophical investigation of that social world. It proceeds through examples of recent applications of such technologylike the Iranians use of Twitter subsequent to their 2009 electionin an effort to first establish these networked technologies as important objects for study in their own right. Alternate with this discussion is an exploration of contemporary value-theory, and a development of a theory of consciousness that can account for the motivational appearance of human value within the realm of social convention. The author defends this realm as real despite …

Gender, Race, Identity And The Practice Of Writing A Feminist Project, Jacqueline Wang Jan 2010

Gender, Race, Identity And The Practice Of Writing A Feminist Project, Jacqueline Wang

Theses & ETDs

This thesis is an experimental engagement of the relationship between identity and writing. In it, I use multiple tones, tongues, and voices to challenge the boundaries between critical writing and creative writing, and theory and literature. The thesis is organized into three chapters that grapple with the function of silences, the significance of the location from which one writes, and the strategic potential of alternative writing styles. I draw on a range of feminist and postcolonial theorists, including Trinh T. Minh-ha, Gloria Anzaldua, Helene Cixous, Audre Lorde, Luce Irigaray, and bell hooks. The goal of this thesis is to explore …

The Hard Reduction Psychology And Neuroscience, Caleb Kaufman Jan 2010

The Hard Reduction Psychology And Neuroscience, Caleb Kaufman

Theses & ETDs

As theory from cognitive psychology and clinical psychology are being formally included under the auspice of neuroscience, the question of integration arises. Reductionism and the mind-body problem provide a framework from which to examine this question. Reductionism highlights particular problems in attempting to explain the mental, experiential content of psychology in terms of neurobiology, such that identity claims cannot yet be made. Nonetheless, attempts to explain, and explain away the mental experiential content of psychology make themselves evident in contemporary neuroscience. Interactionism, as a method, is a viable option which respects the irreducibility of the mental, while allowing productive research …

Why A Duck? Self, Locality, Community, And Relevance In The Work Of Charles Bernstein And Susan Howe, John Witte Jan 2010

Why A Duck? Self, Locality, Community, And Relevance In The Work Of Charles Bernstein And Susan Howe, John Witte

Theses & ETDs

This thesis examines the poetry and essays of two contemporary poets, Charles Bernstein and Susan Howe. The purpose in doing this is to examine their relationship to each other in light of the aesthetic tendency known as Language Poetry as well as to examine the significance of Language Poetry as a whole. In the first chapter, I study the dissolution of the self in both authorswork. In the second chapter, the concept of locality as it is understood by the midcentury poet, Charles Olson, is explored in relation to the writers. In the third chapter, the formation of Language Poetry …

Tibetan Buddhist Autobiography 18th Century To Present, Theresa Sellers Jan 2010

Tibetan Buddhist Autobiography 18th Century To Present, Theresa Sellers

Theses & ETDs

The tremendous literary heritage of Tibetan Buddhist culture contains a number of autobiographical works known as rangnam, or liberation stories, written as early as the eleventh century. In a style unique to Tibet, accomplished Buddhist masters would give accounts of their outer, inner, and secret lives on the path to enlightenment, negotiating Buddhist ideals with the lived realities of Tibetan society via the written medium. This thesis will explore the genre of rangnam, examining selected works of Tibetan Buddhists from the 18th through 20th centuries. Looking at how historically situated individuals lived and wrote in a traditional framework that also …

Transitions From Civil Conflict Reconstruction, Rehabilitation And The Role Of Justice In Creating Sustainable Peace, Michelle Chandler Reed Jan 2010

Transitions From Civil Conflict Reconstruction, Rehabilitation And The Role Of Justice In Creating Sustainable Peace, Michelle Chandler Reed

Theses & ETDs

Transitional judicial mechanisms have the capacity to address underlying causes of tension and conflict during periods of instability. When used appropriately, and allowed to carry out their designated functions, transitional justice is able to facilitate not only a reassurance that there is a rule of law, but also enables the realization of economic recovery and reconciliation. Transitional justice is also particularly suited to handle questions involving patterns of exclusion and entrenched inequality, where conflict may be repetitive and there may be limited commitments to sustainable peace, transparency or accountability. By exploring theoretical background on deprivation, inequity, conflict dynamics and conventional …

Scientific Confirmation And Naturalized Mathematical Realism, Andrew Steele Jan 2010

Scientific Confirmation And Naturalized Mathematical Realism, Andrew Steele

Theses & ETDs

My thesis addresses the issue of naturalized mathematical realism and the possibility of naturalized nominalism. What I call here naturalized mathematical realism is the position that, upon the adoption of a naturalized approach to philosophy wherein scientific methods and standards are taken as authoritative, we must subsequently fully accept the existence of mathematical objects. I argue for the possibility and legitimacy of rejecting mathematical realism while accepting just such a naturalistic starting point. Specifically, I argue against the naturalized mathematical realism of W. V. Quine on the basis the entity realism of Ian Hacking. Hackings position concerns the nature of …

Shifting Borders, Shifting Selves The Construction Of The Russian Emigre's Identity In The Autobiographical Fictions Of Henri Troyat And Andreï Makine, Marilee Pray Jan 2010

Shifting Borders, Shifting Selves The Construction Of The Russian Emigre's Identity In The Autobiographical Fictions Of Henri Troyat And Andreï Makine, Marilee Pray

Theses & ETDs

This thesis examines the relationships émigré characters have with Russia, the country they leave, and France, the country to which they move. The focus is placed on three autobiographical novels: Aliocha by Henri Troyat, and Au temps du fleuve amour and Le testament français by Andreï Makine. Both these authors left the Soviet Union for France, where they became prolific and celebrated novelists who published in their adopted language. In this thesis, I examine the ways the authors look at aspects of cultural identity through their characters who are, like the authors, faced with displacement and a sense of being …

Associations An Art Thesis, Christine Dormoy Jan 2010

Associations An Art Thesis, Christine Dormoy

Theses & ETDs

Through my performances, installations, prints, and sculptures, I rely on satirical and sometimes dramatic approaches to call attention to the constructed nature of social interaction, and more importantly how social interaction is reflexively constructed. I do this to call attention to how we interpret, catalogue, and make meaning out of the sensory information from our daily experiences, and to call attention to the role associations, symbols, signs, and spatial relationships play in how this meaning gets communicated through interaction. I present this information through four different veins of experience. I use the video medium to present my guerilla street performances. …

Shared Anxiety, Shared Identity Exploring The Crisis Of Subjectivity In The Art Object, Misha Wyllie Jan 2010

Shared Anxiety, Shared Identity Exploring The Crisis Of Subjectivity In The Art Object, Misha Wyllie

Theses & ETDs

A poststructuralist notion of subjectivity characterizes the self as inherently decentered and discordant, problematizing the illusion of an autonomous, whole self. Such internal crisis is an apparent flaw in any foreign meaning-making system such as language, or for the sake of this project, the visual language of pop culture. This thesis project explores this crisis of identity through a series of mixed-media sculptures and installations that appropriate elements of pop and consumer culture. Each sculpture conveys this crisis of subjectivity and its conditions, such as anxiety, depression and futility, through narrative and formal paradox. Like Claus Oldenburg and Dana Schutz, …

Selling Suburbia An Actor-Network Analysis Of The Construction Of Levittown, Ny, Matthew Goeke Jan 2010

Selling Suburbia An Actor-Network Analysis Of The Construction Of Levittown, Ny, Matthew Goeke

Theses & ETDs

In 1947, Levitt & Sons began building the building small, affordable homes for veterans on suburban Long Island by the thousands. Within a few years, Levittown became both the most famous postwar suburb and the target of relentless criticism. This thesis uses the construction of Levittown as a method to examine the vast array of factors that enabled detached suburban home ownership to dominate the American landscape in the second half of the 20th century. By studying this suburb, I evaluate the merits of some competing views on the causes of suburban development. Using Michel Callon and Bruno Latour's actor-network …

The Art Of Considering Beauty Cinderella's Legacy, Marisol Guerrero Jan 2010

The Art Of Considering Beauty Cinderella's Legacy, Marisol Guerrero

Theses & ETDs

This thesis analyzes inner Beauty and external beauty in the tale of Cinderella in Charles Perraults Cendrillon (Cinderella), the Grimm brothers Aschenputtel (Cinderella), Vclav Vorlceks Tri orsky pro Popelku (Three Nuts for Cinderella), and Andy Tennants Ever After. This work, based on Platos philosophy of Beauty, analyzes and states that regardless of the time period, place or medium in which each adaptation was created, the overall standards of what constitutes Beauty remain the same throughout: for true Beauty to exist in a person there must be, first and foremost, inner Beauty; any physical beauty, whether of the individuals or their …

Di Amerikaner-Geboren Transformations Of Yiddishkeyt In Jewish American Fiction, Lane Silberstein Jan 2010

Di Amerikaner-Geboren Transformations Of Yiddishkeyt In Jewish American Fiction, Lane Silberstein

Theses & ETDs

Just as the Talmud, or Biblical exegesis, reaches back to its origins--the Torah--so too must writers of Jewish fiction evoke their literary predecessors. Hence the contemporary author Cynthia Ozick chooses to recreate the Nobel prize laureate of 1978, Isaac Bashevis Singer (1902-1991), in her story Envy; or, Yiddish in America (1969). Singer himself returns to the past and the shtetl life in his novel The Slave (1969), and his story Yentl the Yeshiva Boy (1962), yet he also writes about contemporary New York in Enemies, a Love Story (1972). These two temporal realms help to form Singer's literary voice. Just …

The Better German Asylum And The Construction Of German National Political Identity, 1949-1993, Hannah Woerner Jan 2010

The Better German Asylum And The Construction Of German National Political Identity, 1949-1993, Hannah Woerner

Theses & ETDs

The 1949 German Basic Law represented a conscious repudiation of the ideologies of the Nazi regime in its commitment to fundamental civil rights and democratic principles. Article 16(II)(2) of the constitution guaranteed politically persecuted individuals, irrespective of race or nationality, asylum in the Federal Republic of Germany. The asylum provision was decidedly more generous than contemporary international law and made Germany one of the few nations with a constitutional right to asylum. However, substantial political and economic pressures in the early 1990s, engendered by German reunification and steady international economic decline, created an inhospitable atmosphere for the rising number of …

The New Capitalism Cultural Transitions Seen In The Works Of Victor Pelevin, Jesse Brown O'Dell Jan 2010

The New Capitalism Cultural Transitions Seen In The Works Of Victor Pelevin, Jesse Brown O'Dell

Theses & ETDs

Russia's transition from Soviet, structured communism to free-market capitalism had a radical effect on the Russian population. Especially in Moscow, the spread of Western capitalism and the inclusion of foreign markets created an economic boom superior to any that took place during Soviet times. Literature was strongly affected by this transition, and the metamorphoses in writing can be seen in many contemporary works. This thesis will seek to contextualize the works of Victor Pelevin within the historical and cultural movements that were in effect as he developed them. The primary focus will be to emphasize the consequences of the fall …

Difference As Common In Defense Of Difference As The Anti-Foundation For Liberal Cosmopolitan Dialogue, Rochelle H. Duford Jan 2010

Difference As Common In Defense Of Difference As The Anti-Foundation For Liberal Cosmopolitan Dialogue, Rochelle H. Duford

Theses & ETDs

The task of the thesis is to propose an anti-foundation for liberal cosmopolitan dialogue, such that dialogue both across and within cultural divides be more inclusive, and better representative of liberal ideals. The first chapter explores an ideal type of liberalism, informed by a tradition of natural right and Mills theory of the freedom of speech, showing how Mills theory fails within Butlers critique of the marginalizing effects of universalizable foundations. The second chapter Antony Kwame Appiahs theory of rooted cosmopolitanism. This is shown to be an unsuccessful solution to the problem of inclusive cosmopolitan dialogue, when put to MacIntyres …

Hans Baldung Grien's Witches' Sabbath And Fall Of Man Intersection Of The Secular And The Sacred, Eleanor A. Cecconi Jan 2010

Hans Baldung Grien's Witches' Sabbath And Fall Of Man Intersection Of The Secular And The Sacred, Eleanor A. Cecconi

Theses & ETDs

Hans Baldung Griens body of work is comprised mostly of prints and drawings. A significant component of his repertoire is charged with eroticism. Lasciviousness is infused in his secular and religious themes alike. Two of his woodcuts stand out as sister images because of their similarity in tone and technique, Witches Sabbath and Fall of Man. Upon exploring other contemporary early modern German woodcut prints of both of the themes, it became apparent that Baldung Griens treatment of the themes was highly sexualized, aggressive, and also inviting. Agricultural, biblical, and sexual implications are embedded in both images that support Baldung …

Read To Me! Parent-Child Book-Reading And Early Literacy Intervention Programs, Corianne "Corrie" Etheredge Jan 2010

Read To Me! Parent-Child Book-Reading And Early Literacy Intervention Programs, Corianne "Corrie" Etheredge

Theses & ETDs

Parent-child book-reading has been repeatedly linked to benefits in child development and later academic achievement. Additionally, research indicates that the benefits of shared-reading are most salient during the early years of life before children enter school. However, the quality of book-reading interactions is influenced by a multitude of factorssuch as culture, parent education level, and parent beliefs about education and literacy. Home-based intervention programs aim to provide parents with strategies to utilize during book-reading which encourage child developmentin an effort to prepare them for the transition to formal schooling and promote later academic achievement. Though these programs have been successful, …
