A Step Towards Global Engineering Education: The U.S.−Brazil Engineering Exchange Partnership, Aurenice M. Oliveira, Ivan T. Lima Jr.

Online Journal for Global Engineering Education

Global markets are currently dictating the way that national economies around the world design and distribute consumer goods and services. Engineers are in the midst of this dynamic development. In this context, universities around the world are increasingly making an effort to establish international partnerships in their educational and research programs. Study abroad or international programs provide students value-added technical and cultural experiences, and are recognized as high-impact educational experiences. However, engineering students typically do not have the same variety of offerings of international program as students in other disciplines, such as the humanities or social science fields. In this …

Kinematics Of Disease Progression In Bulbar Als, Yana Yunusova, Jordan R. Green, Mary J. Lindstrom, Laura J. Ball, Gary L. Pattee, Lorne Zinman

Department of Special Education and Communication Disorders: Faculty Publications

The goal of this study was to investigate the deterioration of lip and jaw movements during speech longitudinally in three individuals diagnosed with bulbar amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). The study was motivated by the need to understand the relationship between physiologic changes in speech movements and clinical measures of speech performance such as speaking rate and speech intelligibility. Movements of the lip and jaw were quantified with respect to their size speed, and duration. The data revealed several changes in lip and jaw movement that coincided with ALS progression. In two out of three speakers, the changes in measures of …

Prenasalization And Trilled Release Of Two Consonants In Nias, Brendon Yoder Jan 2010

Prenasalization And Trilled Release Of Two Consonants In Nias, Brendon Yoder

Work Papers of the Summer Institute of Linguistics, University of North Dakota Session

This paper presents an acoustic study of the phonetic realization of two consonants in Nias (Indonesia), orthographically represented as mb and ndr. These consonants have been analyzed by Catford (1988) and Brown (2001, 2005) as a bilabial trill and an apical trill, respectively. My own cross-dialectal observations indicate that these consonants have multiple realizations in each dialect. This paper presents evidence for four broad phonetic realizations of both mb and ndr: most commonly a plain stop, but also a prenasalized stop, a stop with trilled release, and stop with fricated release. It seems that the variable character of the two …

Isthmus Zapotec Vowel Formants, Julie Martin Jan 2010

Isthmus Zapotec Vowel Formants, Julie Martin

Work Papers of the Summer Institute of Linguistics, University of North Dakota Session

This paper addresses several questions regarding the acoustic properties of Isthmus Zapotec vowels. Based on earlier recordings of a female, mother-tongue speaker of the language, average formant frequencies for each of the five phonemic vowels are determined for this speaker. I then look at differences in formant frequencies between stressed and unstressed modal vowels. Finally, I compare modal, laryngealized and checked productions of the vowels, to see if there are systematic differences between these three phonation types.

An Ontology-Based Assistant For Analyzing Agents' Activities, Roland Johnson Jan 2010

An Ontology-Based Assistant For Analyzing Agents' Activities, Roland Johnson

Theses

This thesis reports on work in progress on software that helps an analyst identify and analyze activities of actors (such as vehicles) in an intelligence-relevant scenario. A system is being developed to aid intelligence analysts, IAGOA ((Intelligence Analyst’s Geospatial and Ontological Assistant). Analysis may be accomplished by retrieving simulated satellite data of ground vehicles and interacting with software modules that allow the analyst to conjecture the activities in which the actor is engaged along with the (largely geospatial and temporal) features of the area of operation relevant to the natures of those activities. Activities are conceptualized by ontologies. The research …

The Discursive Construction Of ‘Children’ And ‘Rights’ In Irish Early Childhood Policy, Rachel Kiersey, Nóirín Hayes Jan 2010

The Discursive Construction Of ‘Children’ And ‘Rights’ In Irish Early Childhood Policy, Rachel Kiersey, Nóirín Hayes

Conference Papers

This paper explores the construction of knowledge about ‗children‘, ‗rights‘ and ‗ECEC‘ in Irish early childhood policy discourses. This research forms part of a wider thematic research project exploring Irish early childhood policy design from a number of angles; this strand of the research is concerned with ―revealing meaning‖ from Irish ECEC policy texts through a critical discourse analysis study. The theoretical goal of a critical discourse analysis study aims to understand how specific realities have come into being in the policy area; how they are reproduced through policy literature, how language use is an integral facet of social processes, …

Questions To Be Asked & Answered On Nlp’S Role In Improving Semantic Annotation For Ir, Elizabeth D. Liddy Jan 2010

Questions To Be Asked & Answered On Nlp’S Role In Improving Semantic Annotation For Ir, Elizabeth D. Liddy

School of Information Studies - Faculty Scholarship

What was early information retrieval like? (before it was called search!)

How was NLP first applied to the task?

Which levels of language analysis were utilized?

Which were successful? Which were not?

Why were other levels not incorporated ?

Do we now see that the higher levels can and need to be included?

If they are, how might they change how we do IR, as well as what tasks we use it for?

Enter: Entrepreneurial Narrative Theory Ethnomethodology And Reflexivity: An Issue About The Republic Of Tea, William B. Gartner

Entrepreneurial Studies

ENTER focuses on specific entrepreneurial narratives. The label "entrepreneurial narrative" is defined loosely, to encompass a variety of texts that are generated by entrepreneurs, or by others, about entrepreneurs. So, entrepreneurial narrative should be considered broadly. This first issue of ENTER focuses on the book The Republic of Tea (Zeigler, Rosenzweig & Zeigler, 1992). The book is a series faxes among the founders/authors about the development of a business called "The Republic of Tea." The book, therefore, has a temporal aspect to it (the faxes occur over time) but, the "story" of the Republic of Tea is not told by …

Education In American Prisons : A Review Of The Literature, Ryan Mcnamara Jan 2010

Education In American Prisons : A Review Of The Literature, Ryan Mcnamara

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

The purpose of this study is to understand how education programs in prison can benefit both prisoners and society in an America with a perennially rising prison population comprised of less educated individuals and budget cuts on education programs within prisons. The study includes a history of prisons in the United States from the pre-revolution English colonies to the present day, a theoretical perspective emphasizing education's ability to rehabilitate as noted by Ubah (2003), and a current research section analyzing studies from 2005-2010. The findings indicate a correlation with participation in educational programs in prison with reduced recidivism rates, an …

The Influence Of Social And Linguistic Factors On Spanish Dialect Contact In The U.S.: A Look At Mexican And Cuban Spanish In Lansing, Michigan, Gabriel G. Alfaraz

International Journal of the Linguistic Association of the Southwest

An increase in the number of Spanish-speaking Latinos in the U.S. provides opportunities for contact of diverse varieties of Spanish. This paper examines the role of factors including age. education. linguistic network composition, and length of residence in shaping the outcome of contact between groups of Spanish speakers in Lansing. Michigan. A sample of 52 Mexicans and Cubans was used to examine two linguistic variables in spoken data collected in sociolinguistic interviews that included picture-elicitation tasks and grammatical acceptability tasks, following the idea that variation is a reflection of grammaticality (Fasold and Preston 2007), to probe sensitivity to out- and …

Unexpected Case Assignment And Preposition Doubling In Pronoun Coordination In Spanish, Carlos Gonzalex-Vergara, Hernan Labbe G. Jan 2010

Unexpected Case Assignment And Preposition Doubling In Pronoun Coordination In Spanish, Carlos Gonzalex-Vergara, Hernan Labbe G.

International Journal of the Linguistic Association of the Southwest

The following paper is based on the observation of two related phenomena in Spanish. First, when two personal pronouns acting as prepositional objects are coordinated, they are usually constructed by repeating the preposition before each member of the coordination. Secondly, when this does not happen, the second member of the coordination does not appear in oblique case (which would be expected to happen through government), but it appears in nominative case. This can be clearly appreciated in the coordination of pronouns that display morphological case. The purpose of this paper is to explain these phenomena within the Minimalist Program. The …

Las Interrogativas Hendidas En Español: ¿Cómo Es Que Se Usan?, Javier Rivas, Esther Brown

International Journal of the Linguistic Association of the Southwest

Cultural Diversity, Immigration And International Trade: An Empirical Examination Of The Relationship In Nine Oecd Countries, Roger White, Bedassa Tadesse Jan 2010

Cultural Diversity, Immigration And International Trade: An Empirical Examination Of The Relationship In Nine Oecd Countries, Roger White, Bedassa Tadesse

Economics

Employing a variant of the standard gravity equation and data from nine OECD immigrant host countries and 67 trading partners for the years 1996-2001, we examine the immigrant-trade relationship. Particular emphasis is placed on the potential influences of host country cultural diversity and host-home cultural distance. Data from the World Values Surveys and the European Values Surveys are used to calculate the cultural distances between immigrants’ host and home countries. Cultural distance is taken to be a proxy measure for the extent to which immigrants’ host countries are culturally divergent from their home countries. To estimate the cultural diversity of …
