Circulation And Consumption: Transnational Mass Tourism In Cancun, Mexico, Christine Vassallo-Oby
Circulation And Consumption: Transnational Mass Tourism In Cancun, Mexico, Christine Vassallo-Oby
Latin American, Caribbean, and U.S. Latino Studies Faculty Scholarship
Cancun’s packaged image of paradise is a dynamic and constantly flowing contestation of identity and livelihood for those involved in the service sector. Indigeneity is used as spectacle, prop, and entertainment in the tourism industry and is especially popular in mass tourism zones like Cancun. Circulation of not only bodies, but theory surrounding authenticity and indigeneity, are all represented in the hyper-commodification that defines mass tourism. Cancun uses transnational connections for marketing of space, goods, and people that are in a constant state of circulation. Looking at the rise of the tourism industry in Cancun processually leads us to explore …

The Identical Rivals Response To Underdetermination, P.D. Magnus, Greg Frost-Arnold
The Identical Rivals Response To Underdetermination, P.D. Magnus, Greg Frost-Arnold
Philosophy Faculty Scholarship
The underdetermination of theory by data obtains when, inescapably, evidence is insufficient to allow scientists to decide responsibly between rival theories. One response to would-be underdetermination is to deny that the rival theories are distinct theories at all, insisting instead that they are just different formulations of the same underlying theory; we call this the identical rivals response. An argument adapted from John Norton suggests that the response is presumptively always appropriate, while another from Larry Laudan and Jarrett Leplin suggests that the response is never appropriate. Arguments from Einstein for the special and general theories of relativity may …

A Local Christian Community's Missional Imagination: Accessing, Cultivating, And Assessing Missional Discernment In Civil Society, Johannes Gerhardus Jacobus Swart
A Local Christian Community's Missional Imagination: Accessing, Cultivating, And Assessing Missional Discernment In Civil Society, Johannes Gerhardus Jacobus Swart
Doctor of Philosophy Theses
This dissertation explores a particular local Christian community's socially-embodied theology as their missional imagination in civil society from within a research question on how to access, cultivate, and assess such missional imagination. The research question is addressed through a phenomenological approach to such particular local Christian community's process of discernment.
In following the trajectory of this particular local Christian community's process of discernment, the research journey became embedded in the playful imagination of this local Christian community's engagement with their discernment question, and how their critical reflectiveness from within this playful imagination opened up the possibilities of God's preferred and …
School Cultures As Contexts For Informal Teacher Learning, Elena Jurasaite-O'Keefe, Lesley A. Rex
School Cultures As Contexts For Informal Teacher Learning, Elena Jurasaite-O'Keefe, Lesley A. Rex
Curriculum & Instruction Faculty Publications
This study descriptively compares international social contexts for teacher workplace informal professional learning from the teachers’ perspectives. Set in elementary schools in the U.S. and Lithuania, the study illustrates how teachers make sense of and engage in learning within the historical, political and administrative contexts within which they work. A sociocultural framework brings into view different opportunities for teacher informal learning. These appear in teachers’ discourse about their schools’ missions, building structures, classroom environments, organizational arrangements, traditions, and professional relationships as referenced in teachers’ discourse. The study argues for the importance of acknowledging teacher informal learning as a method of …

Studies On Textbooks For Writing Instruction: Course Readers, Composition Books, Rhetorics, And Handbooks: A Bibliography, Eliot Rendleman
Faculty Bibliography
The 23 entries in this bibliography focus on the study of textbooks used in writing instruction. Some of the articles and book chapters theorize with limited and representative data sets, while others theorize with extensive and quantifiable data sets. Despite the level of theory and degree of data, the entries here represent only a fraction of the studies dedicated to the analysis of textbooks, or studies that contain only a minor section related to the issue of textbooks. Currently one can find 862 records on CompPile using the keyword search ‘textbook,’ and 82 records delimiting that with the keyword ‘data.’” …

The Impact Of Ethnic Diversity On The Ladies Professional Golf Association: A Case Study Of Anheuser-Busch And Its Sponsorship Objectives And Strategies, Joon-Seo Andrew Choi
The Impact Of Ethnic Diversity On The Ladies Professional Golf Association: A Case Study Of Anheuser-Busch And Its Sponsorship Objectives And Strategies, Joon-Seo Andrew Choi
Kinesiology (Formerly Exercise and Sport Science)
Between January 2001 and November 2009, players of Asian decent won nearly 30% of the 287 LPGA-sanctioned tournaments held during the period. By contrast, only 15 years ago (in 1995), an Asian player won only one of the 37 LPGA tournaments held that year(Ladies Professional Golf Association [LPGA], 2009). Clearly a new generation of golferse has significantly increased the ethnic diversity of the LPGA and it tournament winners. THis study investigated whether and how ethnic diversity in the LPGA has influenced the objectives and strategies of LPGA sponsorship decisions for the Anheuser-Busch Company (A-B). This research included 11 semi-structured interviews …

Beyond The Binary: Exploring The Use Of Culture In Lutheran Volunteer Corps Members’ Understandings Of Service And Justice, Melissa James Ph.D. Candidate
Beyond The Binary: Exploring The Use Of Culture In Lutheran Volunteer Corps Members’ Understandings Of Service And Justice, Melissa James Ph.D. Candidate
Verbum Incarnatum: An Academic Journal of Social Justice
This paper examines the way Lutheran Volunteer Corps participants actively use culture to form understandings of service and justice. Using data from in-depth, qualitative interviews with ten volunteers, this paper argues that though almost all of the types of positions the volunteers hold are fields that are historically “women’s work,” the way volunteers make sense of their work extends beyond reification of gender norms. Using the theory of cultural repertoires of Ann Swidler, this paper shows how volunteers actively draw on available elements of the cultures that surround them to create understandings of “service” and “justice” that are simultaneously bounded …

Managing Major Educational Change: Is The Cyclical Integration Model The Answer?, Richard G. Berlach
Managing Major Educational Change: Is The Cyclical Integration Model The Answer?, Richard G. Berlach
Education Conference Papers
Where minds meet, there lies the change vector. I have for a long time been fascinated by the way in which change, and specifically educational change, is managed. More often than not it seems, minds fail to meet in a crucial change-space. They either unwittingly zip past each other, deliberately avoid one another, or worse still, collide with excruciating force. This paper examines the interrelated role of government, the public service and teachers in successfully transitioning major change. It is argued that unless these bodies operate in synchrony, change negotiation is likely to be hampered. To this end, a model …

Cultural Diversity, Immigration And Trade: A Study Of Nine Oecd Host Countries, Roger White, Bedassa Tadesse
Cultural Diversity, Immigration And Trade: A Study Of Nine Oecd Host Countries, Roger White, Bedassa Tadesse
Economics
Employing data from nine OECD countries and 67 trading partners for the years 1996-2001, we examine the inter-relationships between immigration, cultural diversity and trade. We find greater cultural differences between immigrants’ host and home countries inhibit trade flows. However, immigrants exert pro-trade influences that partially offset the effect of cultural distance. We also find that greater cultural diversity within the immigrants’ host countries is associated with the creation of trade between immigrants’ host and home countries. The findings suggest that the ability of immigrants to influence their host’s trade with their home countries depends, in part, on the characteristics of …

Rare Material In Academic Libraries, Susan Potter, Robert P. Holley
Rare Material In Academic Libraries, Susan Potter, Robert P. Holley
School of Information Sciences Faculty Research Publications
Purpose – This paper summarizes the importance of rare materials for academic libraries including developments since the arrival of the Internet and the effects of declining library budgets.
Design/methodology/approach – The authors reviewed the literature on the subject coupled with their experiences with collection development.
Findings – Collecting rare materials remains important for scholarly research though harder to justify during a period of budget stringency. Academic libraries should discover creative ways to discover and add rare materials to their collections. Rare materials require special expertise in their acquisition, processing, storage, and use. Digitization is making rare materials more accessible but …
Why Your Academic Library Needs A Popular Reading Collection Now More Than Ever, Pauline Dewan
Why Your Academic Library Needs A Popular Reading Collection Now More Than Ever, Pauline Dewan
Library Publications
Do popular reading materials belong in college and university libraries? Although some librarians think not, others believe there are compelling reasons for including them. The trend towards user-focused libraries, the importance of attracting patrons to libraries in the age of the Internet, and, most importantly, the need to promote literacy at a time when it has reached its lowest levels are all reasons why academic librarians are reconsidering their ideas about popular reading materials. Librarians who decide to implement a leisure reading collection should consider a number of key issues.
The Productive Tension Between Official And Unofficial Stories Of Fault In Contract Law, Martha M. Ertman
The Productive Tension Between Official And Unofficial Stories Of Fault In Contract Law, Martha M. Ertman
Faculty Scholarship
Officially Contract law ignores fault. However, an unofficial story complements the official one, and explains why fault occasionally slips into contract law through doctrines such as willful breach. This chapter of FAULT IN AMERICAN CONTRACT LAW (Omri Ben-Shahar & Ariel Porot, eds, Cambridge U. Press, forthcoming 2010) argues that the official and unofficial stories operate in productive tension to both facilitate ex ante planning and, when necessary, look backward at reasons for breach to reach a just result. The occasional presence of fault in contract law, in this view, represents merely one more instance of the common doctrinal pattern of …
