Rent Seekers In Rentier States: When Greed Brings Peace, Kjetil Bjorvatn, Alireza Naghavi Apr 2010

Rent Seekers In Rentier States: When Greed Brings Peace, Kjetil Bjorvatn, Alireza Naghavi

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

Are natural resources a source of conflict or stability? Empirical studies demonstrate that rents from natural resources, and in particular oil, are an important source of civil war. Allegedly, resource rents attract rent seekers, which destabilize society. However, there is a large literature on how so-called rentier states manage to pacify opposition groups by handing out special favors. The present paper attempts to bridge the gap between the rent-seeking view of resource rents as a source of conflict and the rentier state view which emphasizes the role of resource rents in promoting peace and stability, and show how one may …

Instructional Readers: Teaching Content Through Vocabulary, Rachel E. Wood Apr 2010

Instructional Readers: Teaching Content Through Vocabulary, Rachel E. Wood

Theses and Dissertations

This project resulted in the creation of a prototype for a new book series entitled Instructional Readers that will be linguistically engineered to assist English-language learners in acquiring academic and content-based vocabulary in the sciences. The development of the prototype represented a process of trial and error, with decisions firmly grounded in extensive research concerning linguistic features that assist vocabulary growth while reading. The end result, the prototype entitled Cellular Transport, reflects the author's best attempt to combine these features. The project write-up details the steps used in writing the prototype to aid in the creation of similar instructional …

The Phonology Of Hiligaynon, Tyler Casperson Apr 2010

The Phonology Of Hiligaynon, Tyler Casperson

College of Arts and Sciences Poster Presentations

There are 175 languages in the 7000+ islands that make up the Philippines. Hiligaynon is the fourth largest language spoken on the islands. The sound inventory of Hiligaynon has 22 phonemes, which include 17 consonants and 5 vowels. Contact with Spanish, English, and neighboring Filipino languages (mostly Cebuano, Tagolog, Kinaray-a, Aklanon) has influenced Hiligaynon resulting in many loanwords entering the lexical inventory of speakers of Hiligaynon. Although these loanwords contain sounds not native to Hiligaynon, most of them have assimilated to match the phonology of Hiligaynon. An example of this assimilation is seen in loanwords containing the labiodental fricatives [f] …

Linguistic Features Of Uzbek, Emily Walton, Larina Lynne, Monica Nesbitt, Tyler Casperson, Michael Christensen, Anna Cox, Janelle Derie, Zachary Espil, Claire Ivins, Erin Lind, Anneliese Satz

College of Arts and Sciences Poster Presentations

This poster provides a preliminary description of the linguistic features of Uzbek, the official language of Uzbekistan. Uzbek is characterized as an Eastern Turkic language within the Altaic language family and, although it is spoken by over 18 million people around the world, it is highly under-documented in linguistic literature. Over the course of a semester, our group met with a native speaker of Uzbek to document the phonological, morphological, and syntactic features of the language. This analysis, along with recordings made by our group, serves the greater linguistic community by providing theoretical linguists with new language data to support …

The Effect Of Language Aptitude And Strategy Use On Esl And Efl Learners' Pronunciation Proficiency, Naomi Ofeina Haslam Apr 2010

The Effect Of Language Aptitude And Strategy Use On Esl And Efl Learners' Pronunciation Proficiency, Naomi Ofeina Haslam

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine whether language aptitude and the use of language strategies predict pronunciation gains in second language (L2) acquisition. A second goal was to determine whether these factors differed depending on whether learning occurred in an English as a second language (ESL) or English as a foreign language (EFL) learning context. Eighty-six ESL students in the United States and one hundred EFL students in China were asked to take the Pimsleur language aptitude test. The top 15 or 16 and lowest 15 or 16 scorers on this test from each group were asked to …

Let's Talk Physics: Utilizing Language To Improve Understanding, Bobby Zoeller, Leah Nillas, Facutly Advisor

John Wesley Powell Student Research Conference

Einstein once stated that "If you can't explain it simply, you don't understand it well enough." This idea can be useful in the context of a physics classroom where students often struggle with conceptual and mathematical understanding. The purpose of this study is to analyze strategies to improve student comprehension using language based instruction and assessment techniques. This research was conducted in a public high school physics classroom consisting primarily of junior and senior level students. Students were provided with instruction that focused on discussion and conceptual understanding before any introduction to formulae. Furthermore, students were also asked to construct …

Diagnosing Decisions: An Examination Of Medical Career Choices And Their Effects On The Health Care System, Nicole Craker '10 Apr 2010

Diagnosing Decisions: An Examination Of Medical Career Choices And Their Effects On The Health Care System, Nicole Craker '10

Honor Scholar Theses

With the passage of the new health care bill in March of this year, President Obama was able to promise health care coverage to millions of Americans (Health Reform, 2010). While this was a major step towards increasing the health of our nation, promise of coverage does not automatically equate with the promise of better health. Rather, the expanded coverage may more significantly correlate with expanded physician wait lists. As newly insured Americans attempt to make appointments, they may have a difficult time finding a physician who has the time to take them due to a shortage of available doctors. …

Translating Neil Simon‘S The Dinner Party: A Linguistic Approach, Brigitte Philippe Apr 2010

Translating Neil Simon‘S The Dinner Party: A Linguistic Approach, Brigitte Philippe

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Translation is a challenge. More than just words, languages are ways of looking at the world and these unique perspectives make it hard to talk about a reality which might not exist in the language in which we are trying to express it. It becomes a greater challenge when one tackles theater as it is not a genre translation theories have studied extensively, which means the translator cannot rely on tradition. And the challenge reaches a new level when it comes to translating humor: humor is linguistically and culturally determined. Indeed, languages do not express humor using the same tools …

A Balanced Biblical Approach To The King James Only Controversy, Aulton Bruce Brown Apr 2010

A Balanced Biblical Approach To The King James Only Controversy, Aulton Bruce Brown

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

This study is designed to approach the present translation controversy from a biblical perspective by demonstrating that, by creating King James Only doctrines not found in the Scriptures, King James Only advocates deny both the sole authority and complete sufficiency of the Scriptures. Their unbiblical assumptions about the King James translation and its underlying texts transform the debate from a debate over translations into a critical doctrinal debate over their acceptance of a dual authority created by their man-made doctrines and their refusal to submit to both the moral and ethical authority of the Scriptures.

“Un Écho, Un Simulacre”: The Male Artist And The Woman In Trilby, Hyun-Jin Lim Apr 2010

“Un Écho, Un Simulacre”: The Male Artist And The Woman In Trilby, Hyun-Jin Lim

Theses

George Du Maurier’s novel Trilby (1894) traces the relationships between a group of male artists in French Bohemia of the 1850s and the single prominent female figure of the novel, Trilby. As with many popular novels involving a romantic plot, the men all fall in love with one girl, in this case a laundress-turned-model-turned-singer of androgynous physique and questionable virtue. However, the fact that all of the novel’s central characters are male artists, as is the author himself, begs the question of the role of the woman in artistic creation, especially that of the male artist of nineteenth-century England. Although …

The National Health Policy Forum sponsored a site visit to New York City (NYC) in April 2010 to explore health care delivery for Medicaid beneficiaries and the uninsured in New York City’s hospital-dominated market. New York offers real-time examples of government policy and provider initiatives in health information technology (IT) and quality improvement being played out on a large, complex, and dynamic stage with multiple stakeholders. Site visit participants heard from providers and others who discussed efforts to improve the quality of care for low-income New Yorkers through a variety of methods, such as the adoption and use of electronic …

Spanish Spelling Errors Of Emerging Bilingual Writers In Middle School, Diana Julbe-Delgado Apr 2010

Spanish Spelling Errors Of Emerging Bilingual Writers In Middle School, Diana Julbe-Delgado

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In spite of the significant growth in the Spanish-English bilingual population, there has not been sufficient research on cross-language effects, or how language transfer may affect important components of literacy, such as spelling. Many studies have focused on the influence of Spanish on the acquisition of English spelling skills; however, few studies have focused on how the acquisition of English influences Spanish spelling. The purpose of this investigation was to study the spelling errors of bilingual adolescents as they learn English.

A total of 20 bilingual Spanish-English students in grades 6 through 8 (ages 11 to 14 years) were selected …

Sacrificing Diversity For “Quality”: How Judicial Performance Evaluations Are Failing Women & Minorities, Rebecca Wood, Sylvia R. Lazos, Mallory Waters

Scholarly Works

Because voters rely on judicial performance evaluations when casting their ballots, it is important that policymakers work diligently to compile valid, reliable and unbiased information about our sitting judges. This paper analyzes attorney surveys of judicial performance in Nevada from 1998‐2008. The survey instrument is similar to those used throughout the country for judicial evaluation programs. Unfortunately, none of the readily‐obtainable objective measures of judicial performance can explain away difference in scores based on race and sex. Minority judges and female judges score consistently and significantly lower than do their white male counterparts, all other things equal. These results are …
