Reading And Responsibility: The Grammar Of The Inexpressible And The Poiesis Of Religious Belief, Philip G. Banning Jun 2010

Reading And Responsibility: The Grammar Of The Inexpressible And The Poiesis Of Religious Belief, Philip G. Banning

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Reading religious literature is generally considered to be either an "outsider's" practice useful for the determination of a culture's or individual reader's beliefs, whether of the past or present, or an "insider's" practice necessary for guidance in morality and "right" action. Both of these practices mean the text is construed as the motivation or cause of other beliefs and actions, and that the purpose or value of such texts is nothing more than identifying and promulgating certain beliefs. Understanding texts and reading in this way does not allow us to conceive of the text as a work of art and …

Increasing Latino Engagement In Sustainability And Philanthropic Efforts Of Mainstream Youth Development Organizations In The United States, Lynda Gonzales Jun 2010

Increasing Latino Engagement In Sustainability And Philanthropic Efforts Of Mainstream Youth Development Organizations In The United States, Lynda Gonzales

College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences Theses and Dissertations

Through interviews and the review of existing data from 4-H, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts and the YMCA, this study examines Latino participation in the four organizations. In addition, through research, interviews with community leaders and with Latino philanthropists the study analyzes Latino nonprofit engagement and philanthropic practices. The thesis argues that increasing Latino engagement in mainstream youth development organizations first requires historical and contemporary analysis of related practices in order to create attractive, relevant and successful strategies. Both historical and contemporary literature is reviewed in this study. New research is focused on two main areas 1) the current engagement of …

L’Irruption De La Violence Dans Saint-Germain Ou La Négociation: L’Esthétique Néoclassique Belge En Question, David Vrydaghs

Présence Francophone: Revue internationale de langue et de littérature

This paper analyses the novel Saint-Germain ou la négociation, which appears to hide a controversial discourse under a classic form. a special attention is given to the last chapter to show how this end modifies the novel’s reception. Finally, it is the whole neoclassic aesthetics that seems to be violate.

Ethical Elitism: A Burkean Analysis Of The Rhetorical Construction Of A Moral Persona In The First Term Of President George W. Bush, Veronica Lynn Koehn Jun 2010

Ethical Elitism: A Burkean Analysis Of The Rhetorical Construction Of A Moral Persona In The First Term Of President George W. Bush, Veronica Lynn Koehn

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

On November 4, 2004, President George W. Bush won re-election. According to exit polls, a majority of people who voted for Bush over his opponent, Senator John Kerry, did so because they believed that Bush was the “moral values” candidate. In this dissertation, I assess the moral persona that the President rhetorically constructed during his first term in office. To do so, I utilize Kenneth Burke‟s cluster and pentad tools to analyze Bush‟s statements on embryonic stem cell research, 9/11 and the ensuing War on Terror, and same-sex marriage, three issues that the elite press explicitly identified as being “moral …

“Homeless” At Home: Linguistic, Cultural, And Identity Hybridity And Third Space Positioning Of Kenyan Urban Youth, Lucy Karanja Jun 2010

“Homeless” At Home: Linguistic, Cultural, And Identity Hybridity And Third Space Positioning Of Kenyan Urban Youth, Lucy Karanja

Comparative and International Education / Éducation Comparée et Internationale

In Kenyan urban locations where speakers of a myriad of different languages and cultures converge, young people have experienced ambivalence, ambiguity, and contradictions regarding language, culture, and identity that they can ascribe to themselves, both as unifying factors at the national level, as well as marking their identity as urban youth. In an attempt to bridge the ethnic divide, and the divide between what they perceive to be traditional values and the urban, modernized values, Kenyan urban youth have developed a “hybrid” language called “Sheng”. This language has opened up avenues for renegotiating their identity and cultures, moving them beyond …

The Difficulties Of Learning English: Perceptions And Attitudes In Mexico, Colette Despagne Jun 2010

The Difficulties Of Learning English: Perceptions And Attitudes In Mexico, Colette Despagne

Comparative and International Education / Éducation Comparée et Internationale

The political, cultural, and economical relationship between the United States and Mexico is becoming more interdependent, and in general, Mexico’s participation in the world economy has increased the spread of English as a Second Language (ESL). English is ubiquitous in Mexico’s everyday life, as opposed to indigenous languages which are mostly hidden. The diffusion of English makes ESL learning mandatory if Mexicans want to aspire to a better social and economic life. Nevertheless, this contextual ‘imposition’ highly influences perceptions and attitudes Mexicans have towards the language. This in turn may create a strong barrier to the whole language learning process. …

Spanish Missions In The Indigenous Landscape:A View From Mission Santa Catalina,Baja California, Lee M. Panich Jun 2010

Spanish Missions In The Indigenous Landscape:A View From Mission Santa Catalina,Baja California, Lee M. Panich

Faculty Publications

Mission Santa Catalina was founded on the margins of the Spanish colonial frontier in northern Baja California, but over time it became an important place in the indigenous landscape of the region. Dominican friars established the mission at a crossroads of native interaction, and recent archaeological, archival, and ethnographic research suggests that indigenous mission neophytes continued to engage in dynamic social and economic relationships with other native groups throughout the colonial period. At the same time, however, the diverse native peoples who lived at Santa Catalina formed new bonds to each other and to the lands around the mission itself. …

The Ah Beng Subculture: A Popular View, Suet Kay Chan Jun 2010

The Ah Beng Subculture: A Popular View, Suet Kay Chan

Research Publications (2006 to 2010)

There is a trend among Malaysians in using the Hokkien term ‘Ah Beng’, in describing unsophisticated people. ‘Ah Beng’ means quite simply, a ‘country bumpkin’. However, there has not been any academic studies on the subject in Malaysia, whereas popular media tout it as a cultural icon. There are some issues related to the use of this term – for example, do people readily identify themselves as ‘Ah Beng/Ah Lian’ or is it a pejorative term? Furthermore, among Malaysian Chinese there is a divide between the English-speaking and Chinese-speaking groups. Do the English speaking groups deliberately conjure up a term …

Planning For Demographic Diversity: The Case Of Immigrants And Public Transit, Evelyn Blumenberg, Alexandra Elizabeth Evans Jun 2010

Planning For Demographic Diversity: The Case Of Immigrants And Public Transit, Evelyn Blumenberg, Alexandra Elizabeth Evans

Journal of Public Transportation

This research examines the significant effects of immigration on transit use. Drawing on data from the U.S. Census, we examine how the enormous influx of immigrants to California has altered the demographics of transit commuting in the state and contributed importantly to a growth in transit ridership. California immigrants commute by public transit at twice the rate of native-born commuters, comprise nearly 50 percent of all transit commuters in the state, and are responsible for much of the growth in transit commuting in the state. But over time, immigrants’ reliance on transit declines. Transit managers would be well advised to …

Reconstructing Indo-European Syllabification, Andrew M. Byrd Jun 2010

Reconstructing Indo-European Syllabification, Andrew M. Byrd

Linguistics Faculty Publications

The chief concern of this dissertation is to investigate a fundamental, yet unsolved problem within the phonology of Proto-Indo-European (PIE): the process of syllabification. I show that by analyzing the much more easily reconstructable word-edge clusters we may predict which types of consonant clusters can occur word-medially, provided that we assume a special status for certain consonants at word’s edge. Having thus analyzed the entire PIE phonological system, I believe I have developed the first working hypothesis of Indo-European syllabification, which we may now use to pre- dict which types of syllable-driven rules of consonant deletion and vowel epenthesis occurred …

Biogeographic Anomaly Or Human Introduction: A Cryptogenic Population Of Tree Skink (Reptilia: Squamata) From The Cook Islands, Oceania, Alison M. Hamilton, George R. Zug, Christopher C. Austin Jun 2010

Biogeographic Anomaly Or Human Introduction: A Cryptogenic Population Of Tree Skink (Reptilia: Squamata) From The Cook Islands, Oceania, Alison M. Hamilton, George R. Zug, Christopher C. Austin

Faculty Publications

Archaeological and molecular data have revealed that the present day faunas of many island groups in Melanesia, Polynesia, and Micronesia are not representative of the biodiversity generated within this region on an evolutionary timescale. Erroneous inferences regarding the mechanisms of speciation and the significance of long distance dispersal in shaping the present diversity of these island systems have resulted from this incomplete diversity and distributional data. The lizard fauna east of Samoa has been suggested to derive entirely from human-mediated introductions, a distribution congruent with biogeographic patterns for other Pacific species. Distinguishing between introduced populations and those that result from …

Ethnic And Gender Differences In Identifying Gifted Students: A Multi-Cultural Analysis, Ketty M. Sarouphim, C. June Maker Jun 2010

Ethnic And Gender Differences In Identifying Gifted Students: A Multi-Cultural Analysis, Ketty M. Sarouphim, C. June Maker

International Education

The purpose of this study was to examine ethnic and gender differences in using DISCOVER, a performance-based assessment, for identifying gifted students. The sample consisted of 941 students from grades K-5 belonging to six ethnicities: White Americans, African-Americans, Hispanics, Native-Americans, South Pacific/Pacific Islanders, and Arabs. The 5 X 6 MANOVA (activity x ethnicity) yielded a significant interaction, but no main effect for either activity or ethnicity was found. Plots of the interaction showed that South Pacific/Pacific Islanders scored highest on Oral Linguistic whereas White Americans scored highest in Math and Native Americans scored highest in Spatial Artistic activity. No gender …

Politics Of Language: The Struggle For Power In Schools In Mali And Burkina Faso, A’Ame Kone Jun 2010

Politics Of Language: The Struggle For Power In Schools In Mali And Burkina Faso, A’Ame Kone

International Education

Power can be equated to the possession of a particular language used to navigate the world. In Mali and Burkina Faso, two former colonies of France, language choice for instruction in mainstream primary schools remains a struggle between the powerful and the powerless. Fifty years after independence from France, both countries continue to recognize French as the official language and as the medium of instruction in primary schools. With low literacy rates and high dropout rates in both countries, attention must be given to the effects French language has on these two post-colonial societies. First-acquired language instruction has been shown …

Rethinking Childhood Subjectivity: The Psycho-Politics Of Socialization, Private-Language Formation, And The Case Of Bosnian Youth, Adnan Selimovic Jun 2010

Rethinking Childhood Subjectivity: The Psycho-Politics Of Socialization, Private-Language Formation, And The Case Of Bosnian Youth, Adnan Selimovic

International Education

Under the guise of socialization, the child-subject born into the modern society is subjugated by a familial childhood trauma that appropriates the infantile psychosis caused by the incommunicability of early childhood. This appropriation, put to instrumental ends, results in a psychology of commodified object relations. In fact, there is a close relationship between the historical narrative of a culture and the trauma to which children are subjected as they become members of the social organization. The psycho-politics of the human condition are thus revealed in the realm of the progressive political discourse under which socialization occurs. This project concerns the …

Chemistry Spanish Supplemental Resources For English Language Learners In A 9th Grade Bilingual Physical Science Class, Rebecca Minerva Guerrero

All Graduate Projects

Minority high school students in the state of Washington find themselves under a variety of intense pressures: the pressure to learn English quickly, the pressure to pass the High School Proficiency Exam (HSPE) in order to graduate, and lastly the pressure to be an academic leader for that minority. In 2013, the state will add the science portion to the HSPE. The challenges that teachers face when working with English language learners (ELL) is having the adequate training, necessary tools, and resources needed to increase student achievement. This project is designed to provide Spanish supplemental resources for ELL students in …

Getting Past 'Rational Man/Emotional Woman': Comments On Research Programs In Happiness Economics And Interpersonal Relations, Julie A. Nelson Jun 2010

Getting Past 'Rational Man/Emotional Woman': Comments On Research Programs In Happiness Economics And Interpersonal Relations, Julie A. Nelson

Economics Faculty Publication Series

Orthodox neoclassical economics portrays reason as far more important than emotion, autonomy as more characteristic of economic life than social connection, and, more generally, things culturally and cognitively associated with masculinity as more central than things associated with femininity. Research from contemporary neuroscience suggests that such biases are related to certain automatic processes in the brain, and feminist scholarship suggests ways of getting beyond them. The “happiness” and “interpersonal relations” economics research programs have made substantial progress in overcoming a number of these biases, bringing into consideration by economists a wide range of phenomena which were previously neglected. Analysis from …

Treatment Of Displaced Indigenous Populations In Two Large Hydro Projects In Panama, Mary Finley-Brook, Curtis Thomas Jun 2010

Treatment Of Displaced Indigenous Populations In Two Large Hydro Projects In Panama, Mary Finley-Brook, Curtis Thomas

Geography and the Environment Faculty Publications

The World Commission on Dams provided an analytical overview of the cumulative effects of years of dam development. A lack of commitment or capacity to cope with displacement or to consider the civil rights of, or risks to, displaced people led to the impoverishment and suffering of tens of millions and growing opposition to dams by affected communities worldwide. However, after the WCD, little has changed for the better in terms of resettlement policies. In fact, the standards of key agencies, like the Asian Development Bank, have been lowered and diluted compared to prior policies. Dam-induced development and displacement are …

The Treaty Of Helgoland-Zanzibar : The Beginning Of The End For The Anglo-German Friendship?, Marshall A. Yokell Iv Jun 2010

The Treaty Of Helgoland-Zanzibar : The Beginning Of The End For The Anglo-German Friendship?, Marshall A. Yokell Iv

Master's Theses

In 1890, Germany and Great Britain concluded the Treaty of Helgoland-Zanzibar, which settled many of their numerous and complex colonial issues in Africa. The territorial exchange of British-held Helgoland and German-held Zanzibar, which was part of this agreement, had a major impact in its finalization. Indeed, without the Helgoland- Zanzibar swap, such a treaty most likely would never have occurred. Many hoped that the Helgoland-Zanzibar agreement would usher in a new era in Anglo-German friendship and, perhaps, lead to a formal alliance. Hence, during the 1880s, the seemingly unrelated questing of a North Sea island and imperialist jostling in East …
