The Rise In Elder Bankruptcy Filings And Failure Of U.S. Bankruptcy Law, John A. E. Pottow
The Rise In Elder Bankruptcy Filings And Failure Of U.S. Bankruptcy Law, John A. E. Pottow
Law & Economics Working Papers
Recent empirical legal scholarship on the consumer bankruptcy system has uncovered a marked rise in the proportion of elder Americans filing for relief under the Bankruptcy Code. But these studies have not probed the reasons behind that rise, an omission this Article seeks to address. Professor John Pottow and colleagues recently assembled the new dataset of the Consumer Bankruptcy Project (CBP), the largest national sample of consumer debtors in this country, which he uses to explore the sources of elder bankruptcy. The findings are both striking and ominous. While multiple factors, such as health problems and medical debts, contribute to …

Information Systems and Quantitative Analysis Faculty Proceedings & Presentations
While the process by which Information Technology enables growth in medium and large enterprises has been wellresearched, the corresponding processes in micro-enterprises are poorly understood. In fact, such micro-enterprises lie at the heart of many economies. This insight is important as information technology enables businesses to connect with each other through knowledge networking to carry out their basic business operations. There is thus a need to build our understanding of how micro-enterprises access and use technology in order to be able to assess the benefits they derive from ICT adoption. Following an analysis of two case studies of Latino micro-enterprises …

Insourcing: Reversing American Outsourcing In The New World Economy, Andrew Sikula Sr., Chong W. Kim, Charles K. Braun, John Sikula
Management Faculty Research
The article discusses the need to understand the pendulum swing of human resource between insourcing and outsourcing work effort and accomplishment. The strengths of insourcing, or the use of labor within national boundaries to sustain the functions of an organization, is said to include efficient communication within the organization, enhanced employee morale and loyalty, and a high degree of control over people and resources. It is believed that there would be a resurgence of insourcing in the U.S., mainly within the government sector.

A Participatory Assessment Of Immigrant Integration In A Low-Income Suburban Neighborhood, Matthew John Soerens
A Participatory Assessment Of Immigrant Integration In A Low-Income Suburban Neighborhood, Matthew John Soerens
College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences Theses and Dissertations
While much immigration research has been focused upon urban areas, recent trends in migration patterns show that more and more immigrants are moving to the suburbs, which has resulted in some unique integration challenges. This research focuses on a particular suburban Chicago neighborhood, seeking to determine who is living there, to what extent they are making connections with the larger community and with other groups living within the same neighborhood, and what factors they believe will best assist in their integration. Utilizing a participatory research method that seeks to engage the community in question—the Parkside Apartments in the western suburbs …

Colorado Legal Ethics: Guide To Resources, Robert Linz
Other Faculty Publications
Officers of the court and public figures, including attorneys and judges, are required to adhere to high ethical standards in conducting their professional duties. Courts and bar associations have a long tradition of identifying ethical norms and regulating conduct through rules and action. Although some conduct is obviously incorrect, the appropriateness of other conduct is less clear. When attorneys are unsure of the ethical nature of an action, they will need to consult sources for guidance. These sources may be fellow attorneys or bar association ethics hotline advisors. These sources also include the rules, decisions, and commentary that constitute the body …
Advertising Competition In Retail Markets, Kyle Bagwell, Gea Myoung Lee
Advertising Competition In Retail Markets, Kyle Bagwell, Gea Myoung Lee
Research Collection School Of Economics
We consider non-price advertising by retail firms that are privately informed as to their respective production costs. We construct an advertising equilibrium, in which informed consumers use an advertising search rule whereby they buy from the highest-advertising firm. Consumers are rational in using the advertising search rule, since the lowest-cost firm advertises the most and also selects the lowest price. Even though the advertising equilibrium facilitates productive efficiency, we establish conditions under which firms enjoy higher expected profit when advertising is banned. Consumer welfare falls in this case, however. Under free entry, social surplus is higher when advertising is allowed. …
