Brand Or Anti-Brand?, Stacey Dogan Dec 2010

Brand Or Anti-Brand?, Stacey Dogan

Shorter Faculty Works

How many law review articles begin with a scene from Wayne’s World? For Sonia Katyal, such an opening is par for the course. Since she entered the scene a decade ago, Katyal’s scholarship has celebrated irreverence, and examined the ways in which the law tolerates, enables, and often discourages commentary on dominant culture, icons, and in this case, brands. This essay – written for a symposium on advertising and the law at SUNY Buffalo Law School – continues the Katyal tradition.

The Use Of High Distillers' Grains And Nutrient Management In Beef Feedlots, Amy R. Rich

Department of Animal Science: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Two experiments were conducted to determine the effect of feeding wet distillers grains (WDGS) at 70% and wheat straw at 25% (DM basis) on finishing steer performance and N mass balance in open feedlot pens. Four treatments were tested as a 2x2 factorial with factors being diet and pen cleaning frequency (monthly or at the end of the feeding period). In both experiments the CON treatment (corn based diet) had greater DMI, ADG, HCW, marbling and fat depth. There was greater N intake and N excretion for both the WINTER and SUMMER experiments on the WDGS. Not all the additional …

An Exploratory Study Into The Impact Of Work Design On The Self-Efficacy Of Workers With Low Literacy Skills, Michael Kenneth Holt

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

As trends in the labor market indicate growing worker shortages, the problem of incorporating workers with low literacy skills into the workplace becomes more important. There are significant numbers of low literate workers in the labor market who pose hard dollar costs on business and society due to literacy related mistakes.Organizations have been moving toward more participative work designs in efforts to attract and maintain satisfied and motivated workforces. There are significant skill sets required to become successful team members. Many of these skills are outlined in management literature, but one glaring oversight is dealing with the issue of low …

Neighborhood Conditions And Fear Of Crime: A Reconsideration Of Sex Differences, Karen A. Snedker

Sociology Faculty Articles and Research

Research indicates that men and women commonly express different amounts of fear about crime. This article explores the sex difference in fear of crime levels by assessing differences in fear of crime in relation to urban environments. Using data from the Bureau of Justice Statistics Criminal Victimization and Perceptions of Community Safety, the present analysis employs multinomial logistic regressions to examine gradations in two measures of fear of crime. Some aspects of the neighborhood environment do differentially influence men and women’s fear of crime levels, including serious crime in the neighborhood, physical and social disorder. Findings highlight that women’s greater …

As An Educator And Educational Researcher, How Do I Improve What I Am Doing And Contribute To Educational Theories That Carry Hope For The Future Of Humanity?, Jack Whitehead

i.e.: inquiry in education

What I want to share in this contribution to education inquiry are some insights from my educational research programme between 1973-2010 about the kind of educational theories that can explain the educational influence of an individual in their own learning, in the learning of others and in the learning of the social formations in which we live and work. These insights are focused on: i) The desire of educators to account to themselves and others for living as fully as possible the ontological values they use to give meaning and purpose to their lives in their vocation of education. ii) …

Going Green Down Under: Environmental Communication And Green Product Marketing In The South Eastern Australian Wine Industry, Kevin Michael Visconti

Open Access Dissertations

The consumption of wine has served as an international communication expedient for thousands of years. From classical symposiums of ancient times to religious ceremonies practiced for centuries, wine has played a significant part in countless social gatherings across the ages and continents. Recent growth in international wine trade, however, has impacted an increasingly disrupted natural environment through amplified carbon output, overuse of synthetic chemicals, topsoil erosion, and water mismanagement. Vintners, or winemakers, have been tasked by the implementation of new legal standards, as well as the urging of ecologically aware prospective consumers, to instill a winemaking process that is green, …

A Microfluidic Device To Establish Concentration Gradients Using Reagent Density Differences, Qingjun Kong, Richard A. Able, Jr., Veronica Dudu, Maribel Vazquez

Publications and Research

Microfabrication has become widely utilized to generate controlled microenvironments that establish chemical concentration gradients for a variety of engineering and life science applications. To establish microfluidic flow, the majority of existing devices rely upon additional facilities, equipment, and excessive reagent supplies, which together limit device portability as well as constrain device usage to individuals trained in technological disciplines. The current work presents our laboratory-developed bridged microLane system, which is a stand-alone device that runs via conventional pipette loading and can operate for several days without need of external machinery or additional reagent volumes. The bridged microLane is a two-layer polydimethylsiloxane …

Positive Solutions Of Singular Complementary Lidstone Boundary Value Problems, Ravi P. Agarwal, Donal O'Regan, Svatoslav Staněk

Mathematics and System Engineering Faculty Publications

We investigate the existence of positive solutions of singular problem (-1)mx(2m+1) = f(t, x,⋯, x(2m)), x (0) = 0, x(2i-1) (0) = x(2i-1) (T) = 0, 1 ≤ i ≤ m. Here, m ≥ 1 and the Carathéodory function f (t, x0,⋯, x2m) may be singular in all its space variables x0,⋯, x2m. The results are proved by regularization and sequential techniques. In limit processes, the Vitali convergence theorem is used.
