Solving Continuous Linear Least-Squares Problems By Iterated Projection, Ralf Juengling Jan 2010

Solving Continuous Linear Least-Squares Problems By Iterated Projection, Ralf Juengling

Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

I present a new divide-and-conquer algorithm for solving continuous linear least-squares problems. The method is applicable when the column space of the linear system relating data to model parameters is “translation invariant”. The central operation is a matrix- vector product, which makes the method very easy to implement. Secondly, the structure of the computation suggests a straightforward parallel implementation.

A complexity analysis for sequential implementation shows that the method has the same asymptotic complexity as well-known algorithms for discrete linear least-squares. For illustration we work out the details for the problem of fitting quadratic bivariate polyno- mials to a piecewise …

La Vida Sexual De Chopin, Antoni Pizà Jan 2010

La Vida Sexual De Chopin, Antoni Pizà

Publications and Research

Publications and Research

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

The focus of this review paper is on peatland restoration, in particular what are the policies, present drivers and examples of best practice within the UK. The aim is to review opportunitiesand constraints to peatland restoration and make recommendations which could be used toinform future policy.Peatlands are wetlands in which restoration typically has three main aims. Firstly, to managevegetation more effectively to restore sites and their conservation features to favourablecondition; secondly, where feasible, to restore peat formation; and finally appropriatemanagement of water (chiefly peat wetness, but also water quality, runoff volume and timing)Vegetation management occurs on a continuum from the vegetation …

First Korematsu And Now Ashcroft V. Iqbal: The Latest Chapter In The Wartime Supreme Court's Disregard For Claims Of Discrimination, Dawinder S. Sidhu

Faculty Scholarship

This Article is concerned with shedding light on Iqbal. It will argue that this relatively obscure legal opinion may be one of the most infamous and harmful to American jurisprudence and individual rights of this generation. In particular, it will argue that (1) the Iqbal Court misapplied the traditional pleading standards that govern motions to dismiss for failure to state a claim in finding Iqbal’s particular complaint deficient and, in doing so, functionally and needlessly heightened those standards;19 and (2) the Court erred in finding unremarkable Iqbal’s allegations that the government engaged in blanket racial profiling of Muslims and Arabs …

Negative Intrusive Thoughts And Dissociation As Risk Factors For Self-Harm., Helen Batey, Jon May, Jackie Andrade Jan 2010

Negative Intrusive Thoughts And Dissociation As Risk Factors For Self-Harm., Helen Batey, Jon May, Jackie Andrade

School of Psychology

Relationships between self-harm and vulnerability factors were studied in a general population of 432 participants, of whom 30% reported some experience of self-harm. This group scored higher on dissociation and childhood trauma, had lower self-worth, and reported more negative intrusive thoughts. Among the non-harming group, 10% scored similarly to the self-harmers on the dissociation and self-worth scales, and engaged in potentially maladaptive behaviors that are not defined as indicating clinical self-harm, but experienced fewer negative intrusive thoughts. This group may be at risk of future self-harm if they begin to experience negative intrusive thoughts. If negative intrusive thoughts are playing …

Double Down-And-Out: The Connection Between Payday Loans And Bankruptcy, Nathalie Martin, Koo Im Tong

Faculty Scholarship

This Article reviews the literature on the debate regarding the causal relationship between filing for bankruptcy and the use of payday loans but does not weigh in on the subject. Rather, it uses these studies, as well as a general discussion of bankruptcy filing and payday loans, as a backdrop for analyzing new data regarding the correlation between bankruptcy filing and the use of payday loans. This Article reports on an empirical study conducted in the state of New Mexico that measures rates of payday loan use among bankruptcy debtors from a large sample of publicly available bankruptcy data. The Next Great Generation Of American Indian Law Judges, Kevin Washburn Jan 2010

The Next Great Generation Of American Indian Law Judges, Kevin Washburn

Faculty Scholarship

This short essay, which was the keynote address at a conference of the same title in 2010, argues that the best predictors of good Indian law judging are education, familiarity and experience. People who have been raised believing that there are only two orders of government in the United States are often surprised when they encounter the legal existence of Indian tribes. Most judges become more comfortable with notions of tribal sovereignty after prolonged exposure to cases discussing those principles. Thus, educating all Americans about Indian tribes in primary and secondary education would produce better policy-makers in general and better …

The Intraspecific Phylogeography Of The Blue-Spotted Salamander, Ambysotma Laterale, Jade Shawndee East

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The amphibian diversity of Iowa has been in a constant state of flux in response to several environmental forces over the past 14,000 years. Most amphibians require a moist environment in which to live, and aquatic habitats for reproduction. Ambystoma laterale is one of the few salamanders found in the state of Iowa and is one of two found on Iowa's endangered species list. Unfortunately, A. laterale has only been observed in two counties in Iowa, Blackhawk and Linn. The blue-spotted salamander (Ambystoma laterale) has the northern-most distribution of any North American salamander and primarily occurs in areas that were …

Romanian Men's Masculinities In Online Personal Advertisements, Sebastian E. Bartos, Voonchin Phua, Erin N. Avery

Sociology Faculty Publications

The present paper analyses Romanian men's masculinities via a quantitative and qualitative analysis of 380 online personal advertisements posted by men. The case of Romania is particularly interesting for understanding gender relations, since the country has recently experienced the impact of (post-) communisim, democratization, and resurging traditionalism. Romanian men's advertisements often express traditional gender relations: men-seeking-women are interested in attractive, less educated partners, while men-seeking-men emphasize discretion. Some men resist such patriarchal standards: men-seeking-women who are highly educated prefer educated women, and some men-seeking-men give out recognizable photos of themselves. Limitations and further research directions are discussed.
