Symbiosis In Subterranean Termites: A Review Of Insights From Molecular Studies, Claudia Husseneder Apr 2010

Symbiosis In Subterranean Termites: A Review Of Insights From Molecular Studies, Claudia Husseneder

Faculty Publications

The symbiotic relationship of termites and their eukaryotic and prokaryotic gut microbiota is a focal point of research because of the important roles symbionts play in termite nutrition. The use of molecular methods has recently provided valuable insights into the species diversity and the roles of microorganisms in the guts of termites. This paper provides a review of the current knowledge of symbiont species inventories, genome analysis, and gene expression in the guts of subterranean termites. Particular emphasis is given to the termite genera Reticulitermes and Coptotermes (Isoptera: Rhinotermitidae), because they contain pest species of global impact in their native …

A Fourth Amendment For The Poor Alone: Subconstitutional Status And The Myth Of The Inviolate Home, Jordan C. Budd Apr 2010

A Fourth Amendment For The Poor Alone: Subconstitutional Status And The Myth Of The Inviolate Home, Jordan C. Budd

Indiana Law Journal

For much of our nation's history, the poor have faced pervasive discrimination in the exercise of fundamental rights. Nowhere has the impairment been more severe than in the area of privacy. This Article considers the enduring legacy of this tradition with respect to the Fourth Amendment right to domestic privacy. Far from a matter of receding historical interest, the diminution of the poor's right to privacy has accelerated in recent years and now represents a powerful theme within the jurisprudence of poverty. Triggering this development has been a series of challenges to aggressive administrative practices adopted by localities in the …

Tuberculosis Screening And Treatment Of Latent Tuberculosis Infection Among International College Students, Bhavna Bhardwaj, Eknath Naik, Beata Casanas, Michael D. Breglia, Michael Lauzardo

Florida Public Health Review

Tuberculosis (TB) remains in the crosshairs of many public health policies worldwide that are taking aim at eradicating this potentially curable and preventable illness. Although tuberculosis (TB) incidence has been declining in the United States for over a decade, it still remains a serious public health concern. Currently, there is no public health policy that requires the screening of non-immigrant international university students visiting the United States. Given the rising numbers of visiting international students, this population has come under scrutiny as potential vectors of transmission of TB into the United States. Foreign-born persons from countries with consistently elevated TB …

Regulating Resource Curses: Institutional Design And Evolution Of The Blood Diamond Regime, Lesley Wexler Apr 2010

Regulating Resource Curses: Institutional Design And Evolution Of The Blood Diamond Regime, Lesley Wexler

Cardozo Law Review

The opening and expansion of global markets creates and exacerbates resource curses, or the phenomenon in which natural resource abundance creates governance problems. Yet international legal scholarship has been slow to recognize the relationship between freer trade and the financing of internal conflicts. While legal academics have long debated the role of law in addressing conflict generally, few have systematically addressed the intersection of trade regulation and the prevention or abatement of internal conflict. This Article looks closely at a recent regulatory effort to address the global trade in "blood diamonds," which are a particularly destructive example of a resource …

A series of N α-acyl (alkyl)- and N α-alkoxycarbonyl-derivatives of l- and d-ornithine were prepared, characterized, and analyzed for their potency toward the bacterial enzyme N α-acetyl-l-ornithine deacetylase (ArgE). ArgE catalyzes the conversion of N α-acetyl-l-ornithine to l-ornithine in the fifth step of the biosynthetic pathway for arginine, a necessary step for bacterial growth. Most of the compounds tested provided IC50 values in the μM range toward ArgE, indicating that they are moderately strong inhibitors. N α-chloroacetyl-l-ornithine (1g) was the best inhibitor tested toward ArgE providing an IC50 value of 85 …

Not All Aid Flows Are Created Equal: An Analysis Of The Allocation Of Foreign Aid To Combat Infectious Diseases, Shane W. Dayton, Sven Wilson Apr 2010

Not All Aid Flows Are Created Equal: An Analysis Of The Allocation Of Foreign Aid To Combat Infectious Diseases, Shane W. Dayton, Sven Wilson

FHSS Mentored Research Conference

The developing world is plagued by infectious diseases. Controlling infectious diseases will reduce suffering and promote economic development. Foreign aid donors fund projects for developing countries to help combat infectious diseases. However, foreign aid is not always allocated based on need. Often, it is given for political and strategic reasons1. With respect to aid for the health sector, the research has focused primarily on the global-disease level and not on the country-disease level. The limited research on the latter suggests that donors are responding to need2. The focus of my research is to examine the allocation of foreign aid specifically …

Respiratory Disease In Young Dairy Calves, Alvaro Garcia, Russ Daly Apr 2010

Respiratory Disease In Young Dairy Calves, Alvaro Garcia, Russ Daly

SDSU Extension Extra Archives

Respiratory disease is the second leading cause of death losses (scours is the first) in un-weaned heifer calves. Respiratory problems have increased by 34 percent in the last 20 years, causing nearly 21 percent of all newborn calf losses (NAHMS 2007). Heifers that survive continue to perform poorly as adult cows. In order to prevent this costly problem, it is important to address both determinant and predisposing causes.

From The Valleys To The Mountains: The Biographic History Of Antelope Squirrels, Bats, And Chipmunks In Western North America, Stacy James Mantooth

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Genetic differentiation within and between species often coincides with significant geological or climatic changes that have shaped the sizes and locations of their geographic ranges and altered the connectivity between populations over time. Across western North America, many endemic taxa experienced high levels of initial divergence associated with geological transformations of the Neogene, with subsequent diversification and geographic structuring of populations associated with climatic changes during the Quaternary. As such, we can use a combination of molecular markers and genetic analyses to effectively examine the evolutionary and biogeographic histories of populations, species, and regional biotas whose signatures of differentiation are …

An Overview Of Various Labeled Assays Used In Medical Laboratory Diagnosis. Immune And Non-Immune Assays, Mohammad-Ayman A. Safi Apr 2010

An Overview Of Various Labeled Assays Used In Medical Laboratory Diagnosis. Immune And Non-Immune Assays, Mohammad-Ayman A. Safi

Saudi Medical Journal

In this review, some light is thrown on various labeled immunoassays that depend on antigen-antibody (Ag-Ab) reactions, including immunofluorescence, radioimmunoassay, and enzyme immunoassay (EIA or ELISA). Their definitions, principles, and applications are described, then they are discussed chronologically to show their stepwise development that led finally to full automation. Enzyme labeled immunoblot assays (Western blot, blot spot, and recombinant immunoblot assay), and luminescence (bioluminescence and chemiluminescence) are also discussed chronologically. Labeled assays, that do not involve Ag-Ab reaction but rather, utilizing biotin-streptavidin (BS) interaction and probe-target DNA interaction, are described, together with their applications for DNA/RNA detection and genotyping. Finally, …

Identity Of Diphyllobothrium Spp. (Cestoda: Diphyllobothriidae) From Sea Lions And People Along The Pacific Coast Of South America, Robert L. Rausch, Ann M. Adams, Leo Margolis Apr 2010

Identity Of Diphyllobothrium Spp. (Cestoda: Diphyllobothriidae) From Sea Lions And People Along The Pacific Coast Of South America, Robert L. Rausch, Ann M. Adams, Leo Margolis

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

Host specificity evidently is not expressed by various species of Diphyllobothrium that occur typically in marine mammals, and people become infected occasionally when dietary customs favor ingestion of plerocercoids. This report mainly concerns two species, Diphyllobothrium pacificum and Diphyllobothrium arctocephalinum, for which sea lions (Otariidae) are final hosts. The taxonomic status of those cestodes has not been clearly discernible because of misinterpretation of relationships; complex synonymies have resulted from misidentification(s). Stiles and Hassall in 1899 obtained, but did not describe, cestodes from the northern fur seal (Otariidae; Pribilof Islands). That taxon was subsequently studied by several investigators, with diverse …

Synlophe Structure In Pseudomarshallagia Elongata (Nematoda: Trichostrongyloidea) Abomasal Parasites Among Ethiopian Ungulates, With Consideration Of Other Morphological Attributes And Differentiation Within The Ostertagiinae, Eric P. Hoberg, Bersissa Kumsa, Patricia A. Pillit, Arthur Abrams

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

The independence of Pseudomarshallagia and its placement among the medium stomach worms of ungulates, Ostertagiinae, is confirmed based on comparative morphological studies of the synlophe and genital attributes among male and female specimens. An emended description of Pseudomarshallagia elongata is presented based on a series of specimens in sheep from northern Ethiopia. Pseudomarshallagia elongata is retained among the 15 genera of the Ostertagiinae based on presence of a prominent esophageal-intestinal valve, paired "0" papillae, a modified accessory bursal membrane containing the paired "7" papillae, and configuration of the copulatory bursa. The structure of the synlophe in males and females is …

Political Prediction Markets: A Better Way To Conduct Campaigns And Run Government, Andrew S. Goldberg Apr 2010

Political Prediction Markets: A Better Way To Conduct Campaigns And Run Government, Andrew S. Goldberg

Cardozo Public Law, Policy & Ethics Journal

The note advocates for the federal government to create an exception to the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA) specifically for political prediction markets and proposes that the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) regulate these markets under the Commodity Exchange Act (CEA). It argues that political prediction markets, such as Intrade and the Iowa Electronic Markets (IEM), offer significant benefits, including improved information aggregation, accurate election predictions, and potential improvements in campaign strategy and policymaking. The note also highlights the potential for these markets to reduce corruption in campaign finance and provide individuals with a financial hedge against political outcomes.

Parasite Ecology Of Fish With Black Spot Disease, Sarah C. Kirse Apr 2010

Parasite Ecology Of Fish With Black Spot Disease, Sarah C. Kirse

Senior Honors Theses

The purpose of this thesis is to obtain an understanding of parasite ecology and the incidence of black spot disease in freshwater fish. Parasite morphology, transmission, and life cycles are important to understand before being able to control a parasite. Uvulifer ambloplitis is a larval trematode worm that infects freshwater fish and causes a black pigment to be produced in response to its metacercariae stage. Other immune responses and effects on the intermediate hosts, fish and snails, are examined. A study was done on the fish of Rutledge Creek, Virginia to take a closer look at the epidemiology of this …

Cd1d-Dependent B-Cell Help By Nk-Like T Cells Leads To Enhanced And Sustained Production Of Bacillus Anthracis Lethal Toxin-Neutralizing Antibodies, T. Scott Devera, Lindsay M. Aye, Gillian A. Lang, Sunil K. Joshi, Jimmy D. Ballard, Mark L. Lang Apr 2010

Cd1d-Dependent B-Cell Help By Nk-Like T Cells Leads To Enhanced And Sustained Production Of Bacillus Anthracis Lethal Toxin-Neutralizing Antibodies, T. Scott Devera, Lindsay M. Aye, Gillian A. Lang, Sunil K. Joshi, Jimmy D. Ballard, Mark L. Lang

Bioelectrics Publications

The current Bacillus anthracis vaccine consists largely of protective antigen (PA), the protein of anthrax toxin that mediates entry of edema factor (EF) or lethal factor (LF) into cells. PA induces protective antibody (Ab)-mediated immunity against Bacillus anthracis but has limited efficacy and duration. We previously demonstrated that activation of CD1d-restricted natural killer-like T cells (NKT) with a CD1d-binding glycolipid led to enhanced Ab titers specific for foreign antigen (Ag). We therefore tested the hypothesis that activation of NKT cells with the CD1d ligand (alpha-galactosylceramide [alpha-GC]) at the time of immunization improves PA-specific Ab responses. We observed that alpha-GC enhanced …

“It’S A White People Thing”: The Experience Of Negotiating Sexual And Cultural Identity For Young-Adults In Durban, Erin Schaff Apr 2010

“It’S A White People Thing”: The Experience Of Negotiating Sexual And Cultural Identity For Young-Adults In Durban, Erin Schaff

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

The creation of the post-apartheid government founded itself on the principles of equality for all people as laid out in the Constitution. However, while discrimination against people based on sexual orientation is illegal, homosexuals still experience a lack of acceptance in mainstream South African society. The purpose of this study is to understand the experience of Zulu and other black and coloured young-adult lesbian, gay, and bisexual (lgb ) peoples living in Durban, South Africa. I looked at how these people have developed their identities and what challenges and surprising joys they have found in their lives in relation to …

Intellectual Propriety: Compulsory Licenses Through The Trips Agreement And The Doha Declaration On Public Health, Samuel Mintzer Fuchs

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

The Agreement on Trade Related Aspects of Intellectual Property (TRIPS), part of the Uruguay Round of trade negotiations led to the creation of the World Trade Organization (WTO) in 1995, has led to a variety of interpretations and opinions. Though its application goes beyond matters of public health, it is this area that has come under the most scrutiny in the last fifteen years as the gaps between developed and developing countries have widened and exposed the health disparities between the two groups. Tensions over intellectual property and access to newly developed medicines to treat diseases such as HIV and …

Crimean-Congo Hemorrhagic Fever In A Dengue-Endemic Region: Lessons For The Future., Farheen Ali, Taimur Saleem, Umair Khalid, Syed Faisal Mahmood, Bushra Jamil

Department of Medicine

Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever and dengue hemorrhagic fever are endemic in Pakistan. However, the overlap of geographic distribution and early clinical features between the two conditions make a reliable diagnosis difficult in the initial stage of illness. A 16-year-old boy presented with a history of hematemesis and high-grade fever. A preliminary diagnosis of dengue hemorrhagic fever was made and supportive treatment was instituted; however, the patient continued to deteriorate clinically. Dengue IgM antibody testing was negative on the third day of admission. Qualitative polymerase chain reaction test for Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever viral RNA was sent but the patient expired shortly after …
