The field of centrifugal microfluidics aims to miniaturize common biochemical assays onto specialized discs (CDs). By the exploitation of the centrifugal force, centrifugal microfluidics CDs do not require the syringe pumps that stationary microfluidic platforms require. This paper describes the development of a low-cost and portable controller device that is capable of performing centrifugal microfluidics at the point-of-care (POC). Overall, this system aims to be low in cost, fast, and modular. In this study, the Spin-Stand device controller is the final product of three stages of development: design, virtual simulation and implementation. At the core of the system, the controller …

High Levels Of Oxidative Stress In Rats Infected With Blastocystis Hominis, S. Chandramathi, K. Suresh, S. Shuba, A. Mahmood, U.R. Kuppusamy

Research Publications (2006 to 2010)

Objective: Numerous studies have revealed the presence of oxidative stress in parasitic infections. However, such studies were lacking in the Malaysian population. Previously, we have provided evidence that oxidative stress is elevated in Malaysians infected with intestinal parasites. Stool examinations revealed that about 47.5 of them were infected with the polymorphic protozoa, Blastocystis hominis. However, they were found to have mixed infection with other intestinal parasites. Methodology: Therefore, in order to investigate the role of B. hominis alone in affecting oxidative stress status, here we compared the levels of oxidative stress biomarkers in urine and blood samples between uninfected and …

BACKGROUND: The mosquito Ae. albopictus is usually adapted to the peri-domestic environment and typically breeds outdoors. However, we observed its larvae in most containers within homes in northern peninsular Malaysia. To anticipate the epidemiological implications of this indoor-breeding, we assessed some fitness traits affecting vectorial capacity during colonization process. Specifically, we examined whether Ae. albopictus exhibits increased survival, gonotrophic activity and fecundity due to the potential increase in blood feeding opportunities. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: In a series of experiments involving outdoors and indoors breeding populations, we found that Ae. albopictus lives longer in the indoor environment. We also observed increased nighttime …

Aedes albopictus was bioassayed to determine resistance development to malathion (OP). Two methods were applied, including WHO larval bioassay to determine the susceptibility to lethal concentration (LC), and adult bioassay to determine lethal time (LT). Larvae from colonies that had undergone selection pressure with malathion to yield 50 mortality were further subjected to selection for subsequent 10 generations. Selection of Ae. albopictus with malathion could relatively induce a consistent resistance ratio of 1.0 throughout 10 generations. It was noted that Ae. albopictus larvae showed less susceptibility to malathion compared to adults. The susceptibility test of adult mosquitoes to diagnostic dosage …

Isolation Of Ancestral Sylvatic Dengue Virus Type 1, Malaysia, B.T. Teoh, S.S. Sam, J. Abd-Jamil, Sazaly Abubakar

Research Publications (2006 to 2010)

Ancestral sylvatic dengue virus type 1, which was isolated from a monkey in 1972, was isolated from a patient with dengue fever in Malaysia. The virus is neutralized by serum of patients with endemic DENV-1 infection. Rare isolation of this virus suggests a limited spillover infection from an otherwise restricted sylvatic cycle.

Opportunities And Obstacles To The Elimination Of Malaria From Peninsular Malaysia: Knowledge, Attitudes And Practices On Malaria Among Aboriginal And Rural Communities, A.H. Al-Adhroey, Z.M. Nor, H.M. Al-Mekhlafi, R. Mahmud

Research Publications (2006 to 2010)

Background: Despite continuous efforts by the government and private sectors, malaria is still a public health problem in rural Peninsular Malaysia. This study investigated household knowledge, attitude and practices (KAP) regarding malaria in two malaria endemic communities, forest-aboriginal and rural communities, in the Lipis district of Pahang state, Malaysia. Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study with a semi-structured questionnaire was carried out among 100 and 123 households from forest-aboriginal and rural areas, respectively. Results: Knowledge about malaria and its transmission is significantly higher among the rural participants than the aborigines (86.2 vs 76, p < 0.01). However, use of medicinal plants and beliefs in witchcraft and sorcery in treating febrile diseases were significantly higher among the aboriginal population (p < 0.01). There were no significant differences between the two communities in terms of the knowledge about malaria symptoms, attitudes towards its severity and practices in preventive measures against malaria by using mosquito bed nets. However, the knowledge and practice of different preventive measures to combat malaria, such as insecticide and the elimination of breeding areas, was significantly higher among the rural population than the aborigines (p < 0.001). Conclusions: Both communities were aware of malaria as a disease, but knowledge, attitudes and practices were inadequate. Providing efficient health education to people residing in malaria endemic areas would improve their understanding about malaria prevention in order to bring about the elimination of malaria from the country.

Growing Local: Anthropological Reflections On Current Challenges Facing Central Florida Organic Farmers, Cheney Swedlow

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis considers Central Florida's emerging local food movement from an anthropological perspective. Area farmers and organizations spearheading this movement and the benefits of purchasing and consuming locally grown food are ethnographically explored. Interviews with natural and organic farmers highlight the challenges affected farmers face in creating a sustainable local food movement in the greater Orlando region. Their motivations for farming organically and the counter-hegemonic tendencies inherent in this mode of cultivating are critically analyzed. Taken as a whole, this work addresses the limitations and opportunities afforded to farmers amid the popularity of local food consumption as a social movement. …

Cost, Quality And Access: An Analysis Of Health Care In The United States, Canada And The United Kingdom, Katherine Elizabeth Reidy

Honors Program Theses

Comparing international health care systems assists in identifying effective reforms to address three constant problems within health care around the globe: cost, quality and access. Until recently, the United States health care scheme has been administered through private enterprise while Canada and the United Kingdom have implemented national forms of health care. In order to determine which system more effectively deals issues related to cost, quality, and access, statistical information was gathered to compare each system based on cost, quality and access. Such statistics include but are not limited to waiting times for specialized care, financial expenditures for each country …

UIC Law Open Access Faculty Scholarship

On May 2 and 3, 2008, Cyclone Nargis struck Myanmar, devastating large portions of the Irrawaddy Delta and creating the potential for a massive humanitarian crisis. Yet, the Myanmar government rejected aid from some countries, limited the amount of aid entering the country to a fraction of what was needed, and strictly controlled how that aid was distributed The United Nations and many governments criticized Myanmar's response to the Cyclone as inadequate and inhumane, and senior politicians from a number of countries discussed whether the situation justified invoking the "responsibility to protect" doctrine This article explores several questions, including: (1) …

Access To Assisted Conception: A Call For Legislative Reform In Light Of The Modern Family (Susan Doe V. Attorney General Of Canada), Lisa Feldstein Jan 2010

Access To Assisted Conception: A Call For Legislative Reform In Light Of The Modern Family (Susan Doe V. Attorney General Of Canada), Lisa Feldstein

Canadian Journal of Family Law

This paper explores the impact of laws regarding assisted conception and the discriminatory effect these laws have in light of non-traditional family forms. Specifically, it considers the Processing and Distribution of Semen for Assisted Conception Regulations and how these regulations serve to exclude certain individuals who do not fit into the "traditional" nuclear family model. The author critiques the judgement of Susan Doe v. Attorney General of Canada and calls for legislative reform in order for the laws to accurately reflect realities of the family in the 21st century.

An Alternative Conception: The Legality Of Home Insemination Under Canada’S Assisted Reproduction Act, Fiona Kelly Jan 2010

An Alternative Conception: The Legality Of Home Insemination Under Canada’S Assisted Reproduction Act, Fiona Kelly

Canadian Journal of Family Law

Despite access to fertility clinics, at-home self-insemination with the sperm of a known donor is a common practice amongst lesbian and single women. Home insemination is understood to provide several advantages over conception at a fertility clinic, particularly given the federal prohibition on sperm donation by donors who have had sex with other men. Despite the prevalence of the practice, there is some doubt in Canada as to whether home insemination is legal. While the Assisted Human Reproduction Act ("AHRA") does not explicitly address home insemination, it could be interpreted as outlawing the practice. This article addresses the …
