Morphological Study Of Emulsion-Assisted Cholesterol Precipitation Processes, Vuk Uskoković Sep 2010

Morphological Study Of Emulsion-Assisted Cholesterol Precipitation Processes, Vuk Uskoković

Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research

Crystallization of cholesterol in chemical conditions that involve the presence of emulsions of three different types of surface active agents—cationic, anionic, and nonionic—was investigated by means of scanning and transmission electron microscopic analyses. In contrast with the previous attempts to modify the typical plate- and needle-shaped character of biaxially grown cholesterol crystals, the present study indicates that spherical templates of fine emulsion droplets may impose spherical morphologies to cholesterol particles nucleated within.

Lumping As Default In Tort Cases: The Cultural Interpretation Of Injury , David M. Engel Sep 2010

Lumping As Default In Tort Cases: The Cultural Interpretation Of Injury , David M. Engel

Loyola of Los Angeles Law Review

Empirical studies of the tort law system suggest that "lumping," or decisions by victims to do without adequate remedies, should be regarded as the predominant response to injury in American society and elsewhere. Yet research on lumping remains conceptually impoverished and gives insufficient attention to the cultural frameworks victims use to interpret their experiences and determine their responses. This Article presents the stories of injury victims in Thailand and compares their common-sense understandings of torts and tort law to those of injured Americans. It argues that analyses of lumping in America as well as Asia should take into account the …

Assault And Battery On Property, Gowri Ramachandran Sep 2010

Assault And Battery On Property, Gowri Ramachandran

Loyola of Los Angeles Law Review

Both criminal and tort law seek, in part, to respond to the harm inflicted on persons' organic, human, continuous bodies, through hitting, offensive groping, rape, stabbing, gunshots, vehicular homicide, and more. But could there be such a thing as assault and battery on a person's inorganic, non-human, discontinuous body? A battery on one's prosthetic arm, on one's wheelchair, on one's cochlear implant? Even a battery on one's iPhone or computer, which some users have provocatively begun to call an "exobrain"? This Article investigates whether there is any use in employing metaphors such as "exobrain," "battery on a wheelchair," and the …

Redefining Commonality For Consumer Class Actions Under California Business And Professions Code Sections 17200 And 17500, Roxana Mehrfar Sep 2010

Redefining Commonality For Consumer Class Actions Under California Business And Professions Code Sections 17200 And 17500, Roxana Mehrfar

Loyola of Los Angeles Law Review

This Note explores California's Unfair Competition Law and critiques how courts have applied the commonality requirement for class certification of Unfair Competition Law claims. In particular, this Note considers the Unfair Competition Law in light of the combined effects of Proposition 64's standing requirements and the California Supreme Court's decision in In re Tobacco II Cases, which limited the scope of Proposition 64. This Note also provides a general background of the liability standards for each prong of the Unfair Competition Law, examines the federal preemption defense, and proposes a new standard for commonality.

Cross-Racial Therapeutic Dyads : How Does Race Play Out In Play Therapy : A Project Based Upon An Independent Investigation, Rebecca Lauren Fox Sep 2010

Cross-Racial Therapeutic Dyads : How Does Race Play Out In Play Therapy : A Project Based Upon An Independent Investigation, Rebecca Lauren Fox

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

This study explored the experiences of play therapists working cross-racially with children under the age of 7 to determine if and how play therapy is impacted by a cross-racial therapeutic dyad. Specifically, this study explored whether or not clinicians altered their play therapy approach, made adjustments to the available toys, if race was viewed as connected to the presenting problem, and if play or interactional style differed based on a child's race. 12 clinicians currently conducting cross-racial play therapy with children under age 7 were interviewed using a fixed demographic questionnaire and semi-structured interview guide. Participants consisted of 2 groups; …

Engagement And Retention Of Clients With Co-Occurring Disorders : Practice Wisdom Of A Multidisciplinary Treatment Unit : A Project Based Upon An Independent Investigation, Marsha Kay Odell Sep 2010

Engagement And Retention Of Clients With Co-Occurring Disorders : Practice Wisdom Of A Multidisciplinary Treatment Unit : A Project Based Upon An Independent Investigation, Marsha Kay Odell

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

Individuals with co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders typically have multiple impairments making them difficult to engage and retain in treatment. The most consistent finding across studies is that the most effective service delivery is integrated, i.e. the same clinician or clinical team provides appropriate mental health and substance abuse interventions in a coordinated fashion in a single setting with a goal of helping the client to manage both illnesses. While critical components of integrated service delivery have been identified, how these components are successfully integrated to engage and retain clients in a case has been more elusive. This …

The Donut Hole : A Qualitative Study Of Seniors Who Have Fallen Into The Medicare Part D Coverage Gap : A Project Based Upon An Independent Investigation, Benjamin Todd Weiss Sep 2010

The Donut Hole : A Qualitative Study Of Seniors Who Have Fallen Into The Medicare Part D Coverage Gap : A Project Based Upon An Independent Investigation, Benjamin Todd Weiss

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

When Medicare Part D was unveiled in 2006 one controversial feature was the inclusion of a coverage gap which potentially forced enrollees to pay thousands of dollars out-of-pocket. This thesis asked the question: How has falling into the donut hole affected seniors' views and feelings of health insurance and government, and how has this experience informed their sense of civic engagement? Two hypotheses were presented at the outset of this qualitative study. The first was that since seniors are a particularly active demographic they would respond to the donut hole experience with some kind of political action. The second supposed …

The Influence Of Collective Self-Esteem And The Impact Of Perceived Stigma From Others On Sorority Women's Attitudes Toward Seeking Mental Health Services : A Project Based Upon An Independent Investigation, Lauren Michelle Baron Sep 2010

The Influence Of Collective Self-Esteem And The Impact Of Perceived Stigma From Others On Sorority Women's Attitudes Toward Seeking Mental Health Services : A Project Based Upon An Independent Investigation, Lauren Michelle Baron

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

Although researchers are aware of the fact that public and group stigma affect mental health help-seeking behavior, there has been no research on level of collective self-esteem and stigma within specific social networks related to members' attitudes toward seeking mental health services. This study aimed to identify a relationship between sorority women's collective self-esteem, or how much they value their membership in the sorority, and their perceived stigma from their fellow sorority members on their overall attitudes toward seeking mental health services. Fifty-one sorority women between the ages of 18-24 self-selected to participate in an online survey composed of three …

Rolling Smoothly Along : The Stories Of Eleven Clinicians' Spiritual Self-Care As A Vital Aspect Of Avoiding Burnout, Compassion Fatigue And Vicarious Traumatization, Elizabeth Anne Levy Sep 2010

Rolling Smoothly Along : The Stories Of Eleven Clinicians' Spiritual Self-Care As A Vital Aspect Of Avoiding Burnout, Compassion Fatigue And Vicarious Traumatization, Elizabeth Anne Levy

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

This study was designed to examine whether clinicians who identified themselves as maintaining a religious or spiritual practice as part of self-care routines found these practices helpful in continuing to practice effectively. To collect information regarding this question, eleven clinicians doing direct service work were interviewed; each clinician was asked the same set of questions. The study was qualitative in nature. Each clinician had a unique way of expressing, carrying out, and maintaining his or her religious and/or spiritual practices. As a whole, however, the eleven stories created a surprisingly cohesive narrative. All eleven clinicians reported maintaining religious and/or spiritual …

Clinicians' Diagnostic Evaluation Of Chronic Childhood Trauma Disorder : An Examination Of The Clinical Utility Of Developmental Trauma : A Project Based Upon An Independent Investigation, April T. Salvaterra Sep 2010

Clinicians' Diagnostic Evaluation Of Chronic Childhood Trauma Disorder : An Examination Of The Clinical Utility Of Developmental Trauma : A Project Based Upon An Independent Investigation, April T. Salvaterra

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

In this study licensed mental health clinicians working with traumatized children and adolescents participated in a mixed method web survey examining professional opinions on the provisional Developmental Trauma Disorder diagnosis submitted for inclusion in the DSM-V. It was found that 88.3% of participating clinicians agreed that the diagnostic criteria for Developmental Trauma Disorder adequately described the symptomatology displayed by their clients with histories of complex trauma. Eighty-six percent of clinicians reported that they would assign their clients a diagnosis of DTD were it available in the current DSM-IV, and 75.5% of those clinicians said they would use DTD in place …

What Is Civil Justice, Jason M. Solomon Sep 2010

What Is Civil Justice, Jason M. Solomon

Loyola of Los Angeles Law Review

This Article first explores the meaning of the term "civil justice" as it is used in both academic and popular discourse. It then examines the idea of civil justice by looking at three key examples: (1) the U.S. tort system (specifically governing auto accidents); (2) the no-fault regimes of New Zealand, U.S. workers' compensation, and the 9/11 Victim Compensation Fund; and (3) the phenomenon of apologies, instead of compensation, as remedies in medical malpractice cases. The Article concludes that an important component of civil justice is the ability of a person to hold accountable one who has wronged her.
