Routine Opt-Out Hiv Testing In Jails: Findings From Two Prospective Controlled Trials, Ravi Kavasery
Routine Opt-Out Hiv Testing In Jails: Findings From Two Prospective Controlled Trials, Ravi Kavasery
Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library
Background: Tens of millions of Americans enter jails annually. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention now recommends routine HIV testing in prisons and jails. The logistics for performing routine HIV testing within jails, however, remains controversial. Specific Aims: 1) To simulate and explore the feasibility of future implementation of a routine opt-out HIV testing protocol using rapid testing methods in the often-chaotic jail setting. 2) To evaluate the optimal time to perform routine HIV testing among inmates who are competent to consent to testing, in a manner that not only maximizes public health but also attends to the safety …

High Hopes: Public Health Approaches To Reducing The Need For Health Care, Michele J. Orza
High Hopes: Public Health Approaches To Reducing The Need For Health Care, Michele J. Orza
National Health Policy Forum
Driven in part by a desire to contain health care costs, policymakers are looking beyond medical care for opportunities to reduce the need for expensive services. This paper briefly reviews current public health concepts and strategies for improving health that emphasize nonmedical factors such as behavior, socioeconomic status, and environment. It also provides examples of how these concepts and strategies undergird many of the public health provisions of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, other legislation, and several programs and initiatives. These concepts include prevention, health in all policies, global health, the One Health Initiative, and climate change and …

Gunnison Sage-Grouse To Be Designated A Candidate For Endangered Species Protection, Al Pfister, Diane Katzenberger
United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service announced today that it has determined that the Gunnison sage-grouse, a bird species found only in southwestern Colorado and extreme southeastern Utah, warrants protection under the Endangered Species Act (ESA), but that proposing the species for protection is precluded by the need to address other higher priority species.
The Service has completed a comprehensive status review — known as a 12-month finding — and determined that there is sufficient scientific and commercial data to propose listing the species as threatened or endangered throughout its range. However, the Service is precluded from beginning work immediately …

Introduction: Adolescents form two-thirds of our population. This is a unique group of people with special needs. Our survey aims to identify the lifestyle and behavioral patterns in this group of people and subsequently come up with issues that warrant special attention.
Methods: A survey was performed in various schools of Karachi. Data collection was done via a face-to-face interview based on a structured, pre-tested questionnaire. Participants included all willing persons between 12-19 years of age.
Results: Most adolescents with lifestyle issues fell in the age group of 16-18 years. Females were more depressed than males and had more sleep …

Collaboration In A University Wellness Initiative, Martha G. Jermé
Library Faculty Research and Publications
Marquette University has undertaken a vital and varied wellness initiative that may provide useful examples for other institutions. In May 2009 the Wellness Implementation Committee, consisting of twenty-six faculty, staff and administrators, was created to plan and implement wellness programming for Marquette employees. Guided by the Creating Well Workplaces program of the Wellness Council of America (WELCOA), we set the goal of being designated a Well Workplace and contributing to Milwaukee’s efforts to be designated a Well City. As committee representative for Raynor Memorial Libraries, I have had the opportunity to build new relationships on campus, promote library resources and …

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library
Activated macrophages, via the secretion of pro-angiogenic factors, modulate the angiogenic response to inflammation. Several of these factors, including vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), are encoded by inherently unstable mRNA transcripts containing AU-rich elements (AREs) in their 3' untranslated region. During stress events, the half-lives of these mRNAs must be prolonged to allow for significant protein production and an adequate angiogenic response. This laboratory has demonstrated that engagement of the β-integrin receptor, LFA-1, leads to stabilization of ARE-bearing mRNAs in T lymphocytes through a nuclear-to-cytoplasmic translocation of the RNA-binding protein, HuR. Here, we address whether β-integrin engagement stabilizes VEGF mRNA …

Kinesiology and Public Health
A two year grant (October 2008-2010) was awarded to the San Luis Obispo County Public Health Department (SLO-PHD) so that outside agencies could engage in school wellness policy (SWP) advocacy and community activities to aid in combating the growing epidemic of obesity among the county’s high risk populations. Under SLO-PHD oversight, Healthy Eating Active Living (HEAL-SLO) proposed school district outcomes, objectives, and indicators. (Attachment A provides the SWP rationale while Attachment B contains the HEAL-SLO/TCE purpose and goals.) In March 2009, a research team from the newly formed STRIDE at California Polytechnic State University was contracted to review and evaluate …
