The purpose of this study is to assess the following hypotheses: concern for vision loss is associated with self-care behavior and glucose control; concern for overall diabetes complications is associated with self-care behavior and glucose control; concern for vision loss accounts for a significant proportion of the association between concern for overall diabetes complications and self-care behavior and glucose control in Type 1 and Type 2 diabetic subjects. The study sample consists of 100 participants (24 Type 1 diabetics, 69 Type 2 diabetics, 7 unknown) over the age of 18 presenting to the Yale Diabetes Center from June 2009 to …

Chronically poor people are those who experience deprivation over many years, often over their entire lives, and who sometimes pass poverty on to their children. In this study poverty is measured as the low level of satisfaction of the ten basic needs and the underutilization of material and non material resources. Micro Small And Medium Enterprises (Msme) And Economic Development Of Odisha, Krupasindh Pradhan, Santosh Kumar Munda

Himalayan Research Papers Archive

Small is beautiful' as appropriately remarked by E F Suchamachar is justified in the state of Odisha. Development and sustainable development is largely depended on MSME rather than on big industrial hubs. Sustainable development of any economy depend not only on large scale organized industries but also equally depend on other employment generation avenues to utilize locally available natural and human resources. Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) is one such sector. In recent years the State Odisha has attracted multinational companies like Vedanta, POSCO and Arcelor Mitall Group (Mittal Steel NV) to set up large industries in steel, aluminum …

Identification Of An Archaeal Presenilin-Like Intramembrane Protease, Celia Torres-Arancivia, Carolyn M. Ross, Jose Chavez, Zahra Assur, Georgia Dolios, Filippo Mancia, Iban Ubarretxena-Belandia

Publications and Research

Background: The GXGD-type diaspartyl intramembrane protease, presenilin, constitutes the catalytic core of the c-secretase multi-protein complex responsible for activating critical signaling cascades during development and for the production of b-amyloid peptides (Ab) implicated in Alzheimer’s disease. The only other known GXGD-type diaspartyl intramembrane proteases are the eukaryotic signal peptide peptidases (SPPs). The presence of presenilin-like enzymes outside eukaryots has not been demonstrated. Here we report the existence of presenilin-like GXGD-type diaspartyl intramembrane proteases in archaea.

Methodology and Principal Findings: We have employed in vitro activity assays to show that MCMJR1, a polytopic membrane protein from the archaeon Methanoculleus marisnigri JR1, …

Ethical Considerations In Access To Experimental Drugs For Treatment Use, Sonja Rakowski Sep 2010

Ethical Considerations In Access To Experimental Drugs For Treatment Use, Sonja Rakowski

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

Do dying patients have a moral claim to access experimental drugs when all else has failed? This question has been the focus of an active and evolving debate concerning the rights of terminally ill patients, the nature of the drug development process, and the scope of federal regulation, with supporters arguing that seriously ill patients should be able to decide for themselves whether and when to attempt experimental therapies and opponents arguing that the resulting state of affairs would be disastrous for patient safety and for the integrity of the drug development process. This thesis concerns the ethical considerations surrounding …

Prenatal Undernutrition And Cognitive Function In Late Adulthood, Susanne R. De Rooij, Hans Wouters, Julie E. Yonker, Rebecca C. Painter

University Faculty Publications and Creative Works

At the end of World War II, a severe 5-mo famine struck the cities in the western part of The Netherlands. At its peak, the rations dropped to as low as 400 calories per day. In 1972, cognitive performance in 19-y-old male conscripts was reported not to have been affected by exposure to the famine before birth. In the present study, we show that cognitive function in later life does seem affected by prenatal undernutrition. We found that at age 56 to 59, men and women exposed to famine during the early stage of gestation performed worse on a selective …

Estimation Of Quality Adjusted Lifetime (Qal) Distribution., Biswabrata Pradhan Dr. Sep 2010

Estimation Of Quality Adjusted Lifetime (Qal) Distribution., Biswabrata Pradhan Dr.

Doctoral Theses

Quality Adjusted Lifetime (QAL)Normally, overall survival time is considered as the end point for many clinical trials to study the effectiveness of different treatments. If the survival time passes through different health states, which differ in their quality of life, then other endpoints are also considered for treatment comparison, which incorporates both quality and duration of life. It is, therefore, necessary to provide a composite measure for comparison of different treatment choices, specially in the context of clinical trials, after taking into account both quality and duration of life. This issue has been first addressed by Gelber and coauthors in …
