Willpower Taxes, Lee Anne Fennell Oct 2010

Willpower Taxes, Lee Anne Fennell

Public Law and Legal Theory Working Papers

Self-control and related concepts appear regularly in tax discussions, but often they are invoked hazily or blurred together with other aspects of choice over time. Despite the evident relevance of willpower to consumption patterns, wealth accumulation, and, ultimately, well-being, there is no consensus about whether and how heterogeneity along this dimension should factor into tax policy. There is support in the tax literature for such divergent responses as funneling more resources to low-willpower people, penalizing them for their lapses, and limiting their choices. Whether we should follow one of these approaches, or some other approach entirely, requires a careful analysis …

Agency Design And Distributive Politics, Jacob Gersen, Christopher R. Berry Oct 2010

Agency Design And Distributive Politics, Jacob Gersen, Christopher R. Berry

Public Law and Legal Theory Working Papers

This paper targets the intersection of two generally distinct literatures: political control of administrative agencies and distributive politics. Based on a comprehensive database of federal spending that tracks allocations from each agency to each congressional district for every year from 1984 through 2007, we analyze the responsiveness of agency spending decisions to presidential and congressional influences. Our research design uses district-by-agency fixed effects to identify the effects of a district’s political characteristics on agency spending allocations. Because most agencies distribute federal funds, we are able to provide empirical evidence about the relationship between structural features of administrative agencies and the …

Teamwork training constitutes one of the core approaches for moving healthcare systems toward increased levels of quality and safety, and simulation provides a powerful method of delivering this training, especially for face-paced and dynamic specialty areas such as Emergency Medicine. Team performance measurement and evaluation plays an integral role in ensuring that simulation-based training for teams (SBTT) is systematic and effective. However, this component of SBTT systems is overlooked frequently. This article addresses this gap by providing a review and practical introduction to the process of developing and implementing evaluation systems in SBTT. First, an overview of team performance evaluation …

A Virtual Infrastructure For Mitigating Typical Challenges In Sensor Networks, Hady S. Abdel Salam Oct 2010

A Virtual Infrastructure For Mitigating Typical Challenges In Sensor Networks, Hady S. Abdel Salam

Computer Science Theses & Dissertations

Sensor networks have their own distinguishing characteristics that set them apart from other types of networks. Typically, the sensors are deployed in large numbers and in random fashion and the resulting sensor network is expected to self-organize in support of the mission for which it was deployed. Because of the random deployment of sensors that are often scattered from an overflying aircraft, the resulting network is not easy to manage since the sensors do not know their location, do not know how to aggregate their sensory data and where and how to route the aggregated data. The limited energy budget …

Dog Parks: An Application Of Place Attachment Theory, Andrew Pariser Oct 2010

Dog Parks: An Application Of Place Attachment Theory, Andrew Pariser

Human Movement Studies & Special Education Theses & Dissertations

Despite their increasing popularity, dog parks have been subjected to little research. The purpose of this study was to determine if place attachment and its generally recognized sub-components of place dependence and place identity apply to dog parks. Survey respondents were given an on-site questionnaire at a Virginia and at a Florida dog park. Respondents answered questions similar to those used in previous studies of place attachment at other recreational facilities. There was a significant correlation between the constructs of place dependence and place identity and dog park usage. The combined construct of place attachment showed the highest correlation. Regression …

Spinal Changes In Patients With Ankylosing Spondylitis On Mri: Case Series, Rohana Naqi, Humera Ahsan, Muhammad Azeemuddin

Department of Radiology

Magnetic Resonance Imaging appearances are described in three cases of Ankylosing Spondylitis (AS). The different appearances of AS on magnetic resonance imaging are described and their significance in relation to the pathology of this condition is discussed. MRI is increasingly used to detect changes in the spine of patients with AS. Spinal changes associated with spondyloarthritis are florid anterior spondylitis (Romanus lesion), florid discitis (Andersson lesion), ankylosis, insufficiency fractures of the ankylosed spine, syndesmophytes, arthritis of the apophyseal and costovertebral joints and enthesitis of the interspinal ligaments.

Dispersion Of Cytotoxic Properties Of Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotubes Suspended In Biological Solutions With Tween 80: Their Role In Enhancing Killing Effects Of Nanosecond Pulse Electric Fields On Tumor Cell Lines, Bhargava S. Kalluri

Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations

The objective of this study was to determine whether multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) suspended in the surfactant Tween 80 give an additive killing effect on tumor cells when exposed to nsPEFs. In this study, MWCNTs were suspended in DMEM and RPMI with or without T80 (surfactant). The size distribution of MWCNTs suspended in these solutions was evaluated with a Delsa™ Nano Zeta potential and sub micro particle Size Analyzer and confirmed with microscopy. The cytotoxicity of MWCNTs dispersed in different concentrations of T80 was evaluated in PANC1 (Human pancreatic cancer cell line) and Jurkat cell lines (Human T-cell lymphoblast cell …

The Use Of Anatomical Dolls As A Demonstration Aid In Child Sexual Abuse Interviews: A Study Of Forensic Interviewers' Perceptions, Heather R. Hlavka, Sara D. Olinger, Jodi L. Lashley Oct 2010

The Use Of Anatomical Dolls As A Demonstration Aid In Child Sexual Abuse Interviews: A Study Of Forensic Interviewers' Perceptions, Heather R. Hlavka, Sara D. Olinger, Jodi L. Lashley

Social and Cultural Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

Given that most cases of child sexual abuse lack external corroborating evidence, children's verbal accounts of their experiences are of paramount importance to investigators. Forensic interviewers are charged with interviewing child victims and oftentimes use anatomical dolls. Yet, research on dolls has not caught up to practice in the field. Using a multimethod approach, this study presents new evidence on the function and value of using anatomical dolls as a demonstration aid. With a standardized protocol, forensic interviewers from an urban Midwestern Children's Advocacy Center evaluated the purpose and value of anatomical dolls in a forensic setting. Relationships between child …

Game Reports

During the period 27-30 July 2010, the United States Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island hosted the Irregular Challenges 2010 Game. The overarching purpose of the Irregular Challenges 2010 Game was to help the Navy better understand the complexity of the problems that it could face in these unstable regions in the maritime environment and to better address how it could respond. This game could help the Navy better define the choices that it needs to make with regard to how it might operate in a future environment.

Failure To Ubiquitinate C-Met Leads To Hyperactivation Of Mtor Signaling In A Mouse Model Of Autosomal Dominant Polycystic Kidney Disease, Shan Qin, Mary Taglienti, Surya M. Nauli, Leah Contrino, Ayumi Takakura, Jing Zhou, Jordan A. Kreidberg

Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research

Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) is a common inherited disorder that is caused by mutations at two loci, polycystin 1 (PKD1) and polycystin 2 (PKD2). It is characterized by the formation of multiple cysts in the kidneys that can lead to chronic renal failure. Previous studies have suggested a role for hyperactivation of mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) in cystogenesis, but the etiology of mTOR hyperactivation has not been fully elucidated. In this report we have shown that mTOR is hyperactivated. in Pkd1-null mouse cells due to failure of the HGF receptor c-Met to be properly ubiquitinated and subsequently …

Immature Citizens And The State, Vivian E. Hamilton Oct 2010

Immature Citizens And The State, Vivian E. Hamilton

Faculty Publications

Citizens are born, but they are also made. How its citizens come to be—whether the educations they receive will expand or constrain their future options, whether the values they assimilate will encourage or dissuade their civic engagement, etc.—fundamentally concerns the state. Through the power it wields over a vast range of policymaking contexts, the state can significantly influence (or designate those who will influence) many of the formative experiences of young citizens. Young citizens’ accumulated experiences in turn can significantly influence the future mature citizens they will become. The state insufficiently considers the cumulative nature of its citizens’ development, however. …

Dissemination Of Outreach Education Programs: In-Person And Computer-Mediated Strategies, Alex Kudryatsev, Marianne E. Krasny, Joseph B. Walther

Journal of Extension

In-person and computer-mediated strategies are used to disseminate Extension programs, but little is known about their relative effectiveness. Using educator surveys, we compared the effectiveness of program dissemination via educator workshops, short presentations, and a DVD in terms of rates and extent of implementation in an urban environmental education program. Workshop participants were more likely to implement programs with youth, although the number of implemented activities did not differ significantly among educator participating in various dissemination strategies.
