Fall 2010: Sport And Society, St. Norbert College

St. Norbert College Magazine 2007-2012

A mirror of our culture

On the cover: Sir Norbert – “Norby” for short – helps rally the crowd at the second home football game. (It was a record high score for St. Norbert: the Green Knights beat Lawrence 77-26.) The college’s new mascot character made his first public appearance at the Donald J. Schneider Stadium this fall.

Preventive Care Utilization Among Black Women : Perceived Beliefs, Benefits And Barriers To Mammography Screening, Rowandalla Y. Dunbar Oct 2010

Preventive Care Utilization Among Black Women : Perceived Beliefs, Benefits And Barriers To Mammography Screening, Rowandalla Y. Dunbar

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Blacks, in comparison to other racial or ethnic groups, suffer higher rates of illness and death from many preventable or treatable diseases. Despite the significantly higher rates of mortality and disease, Blacks are least likely to utilize clinical preventive care services. Black women, who are more likely to have advanced breast cancer at time of diagnosis (Chu, Lamar, & Freeman, 2003) are least likely to seek mammography screening (National Health Interview Study, 2000). Allen, Bastani, Bazargan and Leonard (2002) examined predictors of mammography screening among women 40 years old and older residing in the South Central area of Los Angeles, …

Reviving Lenity And Honest Belief At The Boundaries Of Criminal Law, John L. Diamond Oct 2010

Reviving Lenity And Honest Belief At The Boundaries Of Criminal Law, John L. Diamond

University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform

It is a common misconception that there is a line between criminal and innocent conduct that is transparent and fixed. In fact, much of criminal law is fluid and elastic, free, if strategically applied, to label conduct as legal or illegal. In some cases, this reflects crimes that are vaguely defined or imprecise. In other cases, the prohibited conduct simply includes what is so conventionally accepted as legal that the criminal label is perceived as inapplicable until a prosecutor chooses to apply it. The problem of a fluid rather than a fixed line for criminality is that prosecutorial discretion becomes …

Development Of A Unique Whole-Brain Model For Upper Extremity Neuroprosthetic Control, Dominic Nathan Oct 2010

Development Of A Unique Whole-Brain Model For Upper Extremity Neuroprosthetic Control, Dominic Nathan

Dissertations (1934 -)

Neuroprostheses are at the forefront of upper extremity function restoration. However, contemporary controllers of these neuroprostheses do not adequately address the natural brain strategies related to planning, execution and mediation of upper extremity movements. These lead to restrictions in providing complete and lasting restoration of function. This dissertation develops a novel whole-brain model of neuronal activation with the goal of providing a robust platform for an improved upper extremity neuroprosthetic controller. Experiments (N=36 total) used goal-oriented upper extremity movements with real-world objects in an MRI scanner while measuring brain activation during functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). The resulting data was …

Jovenes Indocumentados: Exploring The Educational Aspirations Of Undocumented, Latino Students In The U.S.A., Katherine Moone Oct 2010

Jovenes Indocumentados: Exploring The Educational Aspirations Of Undocumented, Latino Students In The U.S.A., Katherine Moone

College of Education Theses and Dissertations

With 1.8 million undocumented students under the age of 18 living in the shadows in the United States, it is indisputably clear that teachers, administrators, and policy makers must pay attention to their educational needs and aspirations. As the undocumented population disperses across more states in the U.S., it is imperative that people who work with undocumented students know their stories, issues, complexities, and difficulties. This ethnographic case study follows two students who are in their first and second years of community college. Through extensive interviews, the students share who they are, issues of power, concerns for the future, and …

Willpower Taxes, Lee Anne Fennell Oct 2010

Willpower Taxes, Lee Anne Fennell

Coase-Sandor Institute for Law & Economics Research Paper Series

Self-control and related concepts appear regularly in tax discussions, but often they are invoked hazily or blurred together with other aspects of choice over time. Despite the evident relevance of willpower to consumption patterns, wealth accumulation, and, ultimately, well-being, there is no consensus about whether and how heterogeneity along this dimension should factor into tax policy. There is support in the tax literature for such divergent responses as funneling more resources to low-willpower people, penalizing them for their lapses, and limiting their choices. Whether we should follow one of these approaches, or some other approach entirely, requires a careful analysis …

Agency Design And Distributive Politics, Jacob Gersen, Christopher R. Berry Oct 2010

Agency Design And Distributive Politics, Jacob Gersen, Christopher R. Berry

Coase-Sandor Institute for Law & Economics Research Paper Series

This paper targets the intersection of two generally distinct literatures: political control of administrative agencies and distributive politics. Based on a comprehensive database of federal spending that tracks allocations from each agency to each congressional district for every year from 1984 through 2007, we analyze the responsiveness of agency spending decisions to presidential and congressional influences. Our research design uses district-by-agency fixed effects to identify the effects of a district's political characteristics on agency spending allocations. Because most agencies distribute federal funds, we are able to provide empirical evidence about the relationship between structural features of administrative agencies and the …

From Harmelin To Graham - Justice Kennedy Stakes Out A Path To Proportional Punishment, Eva Nilsen Oct 2010

From Harmelin To Graham - Justice Kennedy Stakes Out A Path To Proportional Punishment, Eva Nilsen

Faculty Scholarship

Graham v. Florida3 is a groundbreaking decision because it revives punishment doctrine on two issues that have lain dormant since Harmelin v. Michigan4: proportionality and individualized sentencing. Although it doesn't overrule Harmelin, by recognizing the continued vitality of Weems5 and Solem 6 the Graham decision appears to acknowledge that the Court's approach to proportionality since Harmelin may be too restrictive for the U.S. justice system today. In Solem, the Court affirmed its Constitutional role in ensuring just punishment; in Graham, the Court reaffirms that role.

Harmelin has had an enormous and regrettable impact …

The Internal Expression Of The Phenomenon Of Human Aspiration, Eunsuh Choi Oct 2010

The Internal Expression Of The Phenomenon Of Human Aspiration, Eunsuh Choi

Theses

My thesis investigates the phenomenon of human aspiration in life and was conceived from the new perspective I have about myself and my pursuits in a foreign country. Originally from Korea, I relocated to the United States and during this time asked myself many questions to determine my goal. When I was young, adults would ask me about my future even though I was not yet old enough to think logically about such questions. "What do you want to be?" they would ask. "What is next?" These are common questions in my country. I assume there are many different reasons …

S100a1: A Multifaceted Therapeutic Target In Cardiovascular Disease., David Rohde, Julia Ritterhoff, Mirko Voelkers, Hugo A Katus, Thomas G Parker, Patrick Most

Department of Medicine Faculty Papers

Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death worldwide, showing a dramatically growing prevalence. It is still associated with a poor clinical prognosis, indicating insufficient long-term treatment success of currently available therapeutic strategies. Investigations of the pathomechanisms underlying cardiovascular disorders uncovered the Ca(2+) binding protein S100A1 as a critical regulator of both cardiac performance and vascular biology. In cardiomyocytes, S100A1 was found to interact with both the sarcoplasmic reticulum ATPase (SERCA2a) and the ryanodine receptor 2 (RyR2), resulting in substantially improved Ca(2+) handling and contractile performance. Additionally, S100A1 has been described to target the cardiac sarcomere and mitochondria, leading to …

The Added Value Of Molecular Testing In Small Pancreatic Cysts, Adam D. Toll, Md, Marluce Bibbo, Md Oct 2010

The Added Value Of Molecular Testing In Small Pancreatic Cysts, Adam D. Toll, Md, Marluce Bibbo, Md

Department of Pathology, Anatomy, and Cell Biology Faculty Papers

Background:

Cystic lesions of the pancreas (CLP) represent a relatively common pathologic entity affecting at least 1% of medical patients and represent a spectrum of lesions from inflammatory pseudocyststo malignant neoplasms. A significant percentage of these cysts are found incidentally during imaging work-up for unrelated conditions and require appropriate diagnostic testing to characterize the nature of the CLP. A multi-disciplinary approach to characterize CLP is currently used involving cytology, imaging, and cyst fluid analysis. The most recent international guidelines recommend resection of pancreatic mucinouscysts >3 cm, or smaller cysts with positive cytology, mural nodules, or symptoms.

Recent work utilized DNA …

Child And Caregiver Social Behavior And Joint Attention Change Following P.L.A.Y. Project Intervention, Jeffrey Scott Karst Oct 2010

Child And Caregiver Social Behavior And Joint Attention Change Following P.L.A.Y. Project Intervention, Jeffrey Scott Karst

Master's Theses (2009 -)

Autism is a complex, developmental disorder affecting approximately one in 110 children in the United States. Children with autism spectrum disorders demonstrate a variety of significant deficits, including social impairment. The limitations in social ability may be in part a product of limited joint attention development at an early age. Joint attention refers to the triadic attention between an individual, another person, and an object or event and has been shown to moderate the effectiveness of certain autism interventions. The P.L.A.Y. Project, developed by Dr. Richard Solomon, aims to train parents of children with autism to be their child's own …
