Peninsula Medical School

BACKGROUND: There is a need for greater understanding of the impact of multiple sclerosis (MS) from the perspective of individuals with the condition. The South West Impact of MS Project (SWIMS) has been designed to improve understanding of disease impact using a patient-centred approach. The purpose is to (1) develop improved measurement instruments for clinical trials, (2) evaluate longitudinal performance of a variety of patient-reported outcome measures, (3) develop prognostic predictors for use in individualising drug treatment for patients, particularly early on in the disease course. METHODS: This is a patient-centred, prospective, longitudinal study of multiple sclerosis and clinically isolated …

Multilevel Functional Principal Component Analysis For High-Dimensional Data, Vadim Zipunnikov, Brian Caffo, Ciprian Crainiceanu, David M. Yousem, Christos Davatzikos, Brian S. Schwartz Oct 2010

Multilevel Functional Principal Component Analysis For High-Dimensional Data, Vadim Zipunnikov, Brian Caffo, Ciprian Crainiceanu, David M. Yousem, Christos Davatzikos, Brian S. Schwartz

Johns Hopkins University, Dept. of Biostatistics Working Papers

We propose fast and scalable statistical methods for the analysis of hundreds or thousands of high dimensional vectors observed at multiple visits. The proposed inferential methods avoid the difficult task of loading the entire data set at once in the computer memory and use sequential access to data. This allows deployment of our methodology on low-resource computers where computations can be done in minutes on extremely large data sets. Our methods are motivated by and applied to a study where hundreds of subjects were scanned using Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) at two visits roughly five years apart. The original data …

Global, Rural, & Cultural Health Book Series

We invite you to explore an array of issues touching culture, rurality, or both, in the following collection of essays. In this class, we have defined both culture and rurality broadly and in expansive contexts. Much remains to be done, both locally and globally, to improve the health status of our varied populations and residents. Please join us in the analysis and resolution of the health challenges, inequities, and noteworthy mysteries that characterize particular rural and cultural settings.

Auxiliary State Variables For Rotor Crack Detection, Zbigniew Kulesza, Jerzy T. Sawicki Oct 2010

Auxiliary State Variables For Rotor Crack Detection, Zbigniew Kulesza, Jerzy T. Sawicki

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

In the present study, a new model-based method for rotor crack detection and crack location is proposed. The finiteelement model of the rotor-bearing system accounts for the breathing mechanism of the crack. The model of the rotor system is augmented with an auxiliary single-degree-of-freedom oscillator. The observer is designed and the estimates of its two auxiliary state variables are proposed as crack indicators. The crack location along the shaft is determined by designing a set of observers, which calculate the values of these indicators for different possible crack locations along the shaft. The proposed method is validated numerically and the …
