Moreover it allows them to monitor nursing care quality, as well as to test an aspect of …
Lived Experience Of Mothers As They Sought Health Care For Their Internationally Adopted Children, Natalie L. Murphy
Lived Experience Of Mothers As They Sought Health Care For Their Internationally Adopted Children, Natalie L. Murphy
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
For the past 60 years, American citizens have turned to international adoption as a way to build their families. Unfortunately, international adoptees often spend the first months or years of their young lives in conditions of poverty and/or institutionalized care. Additionally, current U.S. immigration laws dictate that the children receive only a cursory health screening before arrival. As a result, many of the children adopted by Americans arrive to the United States with significant physical, emotional, behavioral, and developmental health problems. Twelve mothers who had adopted children internationally were interviewed for this study. Their stories of obtaining health care for …
Maintaining Self-Intergrity Through Superstitious Behavior, Ryan M. Moyer
Maintaining Self-Intergrity Through Superstitious Behavior, Ryan M. Moyer
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Superstitious behavior is still a common occurrence in modern society, seemingly impervious to intellectual progress that humans have made throughout history. While the desire to maintain a sense of control over one's environment has been investigated as one of the key motivations behind superstitious behavior, it has yet to be examined within the context of the self-concept. Threats to one's sense of control can also be construed as general threats to one's global sense of self-worth. Consequently, while superstitious behavior may be triggered by control threats, it may also occur as a result of any general threat to self-integrity. Moreover, …
Mechanisms For Improving Energy Efficiency In Wireless Sensor Networks, Mirela Ioana Fonoage
Mechanisms For Improving Energy Efficiency In Wireless Sensor Networks, Mirela Ioana Fonoage
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
A Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) is composed of a large number of sensor nodes that are densely deployed in an area. One of the main issues addressed in WSNs research is energy efficiency due to sensors' limited energy resources. WSNs are deployed to monitor and control the physical environment, and to transmit the collected data to one or more sinks using multi-hop communication. Energy efficiency protocols represent a key mechanism in WSNs. This dissertation proposes several methods used to prolong WSNs lifetime focusing on designing energy efficient communication protocols. A critical issue for data gathering in WSNs is the formation …

Methionine Sulfoxide Reductase A (Msra) And Aging In The Anoxia-Tolerant Freshwater Turtle (Trachemys Scripta), Lynsey Erin Bruce
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
The enzyme Methionine sulfoxide reductase A (MsrA) repairs oxidized proteins, and may act as a scavenger of reactive oxygen species (ROS), making it a potential therapeutic target for age-related neurodegenerative diseases. The anoxia-tolerant turtle offers a unique model to observe the effects of oxidative stress on a system that maintains neuronal function following anoxia and reoxygenation, and that ages without senescence. MsrA is present in both the mitochondria and cytosol, with protein levels increasing respectively 3- and 4-fold over 4 hours of anoxia, and remaining 2-fold higher than basal upon reoxygenation. MsrA was knocked down in neuronally-enriched cell cultures via …
Modes Of Self-Directed Attention, Urszula. Strawinska
Modes Of Self-Directed Attention, Urszula. Strawinska
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Establishing and maintaining a clear and stable view of oneself is one of the major goals that human beings are motivated by. Individuals' environment is overflowing with a variety of self-relevant feedback. Yet, humans are able to generalize their experience into idiosyncratic self-concept, that despite being the largest, and most complex of all cognitive structures provides a good frame of reference for regulation of action, emotion, and cognition. This research project examined a dynamic model of self-regulation that explains how humans manage to arrive at and maintain a coherent understanding of who they are and what they are like despite …
Multiple Birth Families, Religion, And Cultural Hegemony, Emily M. Cittadino
Multiple Birth Families, Religion, And Cultural Hegemony, Emily M. Cittadino
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Reality television programming chronicling the daily workings of multiple birth families within American culture has gained notoriety in recent years. Such programs, especially Discovery Health and TLC's 17, 18 Kids and Counting and TLC's Jon and Kate Plus Ei8ht, film, edit and broadcast the "everyday" life of these families. This research study focuses attention on hegemonic ideologies surrounding family values, motherhood, gender roles and religious faith, illuminated through textual and audience analysis. Working from an interdisciplinary approach combining feminist media and cultural studies, this study finds that hegemonic notions of family values, gender representations, religious faith and conceptions of motherhood …
Neuropsychological Examination Of The Effects Of Mindfulnesss Meditation In Elementary School Children, Sara Elizabeth Klco
Neuropsychological Examination Of The Effects Of Mindfulnesss Meditation In Elementary School Children, Sara Elizabeth Klco
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Many recent studies have confirmed that mindfulness meditation has wide ranging potential to improve the mental health and well-being of adults, though few studies have explored its potential to help younger populations. In the current study, a sample of 4th and 2nd grade students was trained in the techniques of mindfulness meditation. Baseline electroencephalograms (EEGs) were taken before the training, and again after a 10 week period of daily meditation practice. Measures of attention, creativity, affect, depression, behavioral inhibition/activation, emotion regulation, impulsive/aggressive behaviors, and social anxiety were also administered before and after the meditation practice period. Results indicate that mindfulness …
Neural And Behavioral Correlates Of Song Prosody, Reyna Leigh Gordon
Neural And Behavioral Correlates Of Song Prosody, Reyna Leigh Gordon
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
This dissertation studies the neural basis of song, a universal human behavior. The relationship of words and melodies in the perception of song at phonological, semantic, melodic, and rhythmic levels of processing was investigated using the fine temporal resolution of Electroencephalography (EEG). The observations reported here may shed light on a ubiquitous human experience and also inform the discussion of whether language and music share neural resources or recruit domain-specific neural mechanisms. Experiment 1 was designed to determine whether words and melody in song are processed interactively or independently. Participants listened to sung words in which the melodies and/or the …
New Insights Into The Neuromodulatory Role And Potential Action Site Of Taurine In Retinal Neurons, Simon Bulley
New Insights Into The Neuromodulatory Role And Potential Action Site Of Taurine In Retinal Neurons, Simon Bulley
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Taurine is the second most abundant amino acid in the CNS after glutamate and its functions have been found largely related to intracellular calcium ([Ca2+]i) modulation, osmoregulation, membrane stabilization, reproduction and immunity. The action of taurine has also been implicated in neurotransmission and neuromodulation though its specific sites of action are not fully understood. Isolated retinal neurons from the larval tiger salamanders (Ambystoma tigrinum) were used as a model to study the neuromodulatory role of taurine in the CNS and to gain insights into its potential sites of action. A combination of techniques was used, including whole-cell patch clamp recording …
Nursing And National Healthcare Implications With The Rise Of The California Nurses Association And The National Nurse Organizing Committee, John. Silver
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
In 1993, a group of unionized bedside nurses took control of their state nursing association. In 1995, they disenfranchised themselves from the American Nurses Association, which historically had billed itself as - THE voice of the profession of nursing. This study utilizes a case study format to look at who they are, what their intentions are, and what their vision is for the future of the profession. Twenty questions were submitted to key participants identified by the California Nurses Association (CNA). The questions were organized into three main areas: the period leading up to the disenfranchisement, the period of growth …

Preacher's Cave, Jane S. Day
Preacher's Cave, Jane S. Day
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Preacher's Cave, an archaeological site in North Eleuthera, Bahamas, is arguably one of the most important historical places in that country. This large cave, isolated in a natural setting, has long been associated in the popular imagination with the first English colonists who shipwrecked in the Bahamas in 1648 and laid the foundation for the modern nation. Before the present work, no systematic scientific archaeological work had ever been conducted at this site. While Project Director for the Preacher's Cave archaeological investigations in 1991, 1992, 2005, 2006, and 2007, I acted as liaison between the Bahamian Government, local island constituents, …
Preventing The Next Abu Gharib, Paul. Hofacker
Preventing The Next Abu Gharib, Paul. Hofacker
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
The cruelty of Military Police guards at Abu Ghraib prison contributed to American shame and questions regarding how such cruelty emerges. The accepted approach of "situational attribution theory" - based upon Zimbardo's (1973, 2007) social psychological perceptions and results of the Stanford Prison Experiment - proposed that personality or "disposition" has little role in the emergence of such cruelty. Termed "institutional cruelty," this manuscript presents the possibility that understandings and preventive measures afforded by situational attribution theory can be extended via acknowledgement of a greater role played by disposition. Psychoanalytic and object relations approaches are presented to this end. The …
Remote Gaming On Resource Constrained Devices, Waazim. Reza
Remote Gaming On Resource Constrained Devices, Waazim. Reza
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Games have become important applications on mobile devices. A mobile gaming approach known as remote gaming is being developed to support games on low cost mobile devices. In the remote gaming approach, the responsibility of rendering a game and advancing the game play is put on remote servers instead of the resource constrained mobile devices. The games rendered on the servers are encoded as video and streamed to mobile devices. Mobile devices gather user input and stream the commands back to the servers to advance game play. With this solution, mobile devices with video playback and network connectivity can become …
Risk Of Sperm Competition Moderatres Men's Relationship Satisfaction And Interest In Their Partner's Copulatory Orgasm, Vincent M. Bates
Risk Of Sperm Competition Moderatres Men's Relationship Satisfaction And Interest In Their Partner's Copulatory Orgasm, Vincent M. Bates
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Sperm competition occurs when the sperm of multiple males concurrently occupy a female's reproductive tract and compete for fertilization. Sperm competition may have been a recurrent adaptive problem over human evolutionary history. Women's orgasm may facilitate retention of a particular man's sperm. I therefore hypothesized that men experiencing greater sperm competition risk will be particularly interested in the occurrence of their partner's copulatory orgasm. Men who are more satisfied with and invested in their relationship may experience greater costs in the event of sperm competition and potential cuckoldry. Therefore, these men may be more interested in ensuring their partner's copulatory …
Social Construction Of Breast And Prostate Cancer Policy, Jocilyn. Martinez
Social Construction Of Breast And Prostate Cancer Policy, Jocilyn. Martinez
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Breast and prostate cancers are the most commonly diagnosed forms of cancer in women and men in the United States. The federal government has played an active role in dedicating resources toward breast and prostate cancers since the early 1990s, when policy actors successfully lobbied Congress to adopt policies that increased awareness and spending. Using theories of social construction, I argue that the key to their success was the ability of these policy actors to socially construct the illnesses of breast and prostate cancers into politically attractive public issues that appealed to federal policymakers. Through the use of embedded collective …
Symbiosis Between The Individual And Society In Ralph Waldo Emerson's "The American Scholar," "History," And "Politics", Elizabeth. Gillespie
Symbiosis Between The Individual And Society In Ralph Waldo Emerson's "The American Scholar," "History," And "Politics", Elizabeth. Gillespie
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
This thesis will reveal a political dimension to Emerson's work, situating itself in the current scholarly movement to analyze Emerson from a different angle. Scholars have long heralded Emerson as a staunch individualist or transcendentalist, yet there has been a recent shift in literary studies to consider him from a social or political perspective. Emerson's emphasis on the individual does not diminish in any of the three essays that I have selected; however, he strongly urges every individual to contribute towards the amelioration of society. He also believes that an individual person has enormous potential to cause both great improvement …
Task Allocation And Path Planning For Acoustic Networks Of Auvs, Yueyue Deng
Task Allocation And Path Planning For Acoustic Networks Of Auvs, Yueyue Deng
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Controlling the cooperative behaviors of a fleet of autonomous underwater vehicles in a stochastic, complex environment is a formidable challenge in artificial intelligence. The complexity arises from the challenges of limited navigation and communication capabilities of underwater environment. A time critical cooperative operation by acoustic networks of Multiple Cooperative Vehicles (MCVs) necessitates a robust task allocation mechanism and an efficient path planning model. In this work, we present solutions to investigate two aspects of the cooperative schema for multiple underwater vehicles under realistic underwater acoustic communications: a Location-aided Task Allocation Framework (LAAF) algorithm for multi-target task assignment and a mathematical …

The Effects Of Social Structure On Individual Actions: A Social Cognition And Social Structure Approach, Harry Trip Knoche
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
This study examines the effects of epistemic motives and individual social structure (strength of social ties) on individual actions. lt has been suggested that the informal structure of relations that develops within firms affects the actions of individuals e effects of both epistemic motives and social structure are considered. The findings of this study suggest that information about the epistemic motives of employees can provide insight into the fonnation of the individual social structures and the intrinsic desire of employees to take interdependent or independent actions. The effects of epistemic motives and individual social structure on individual actions, the organizing …

The article focuses on the historical ecology of the Pacific herring, a marine food web resource, in the Gulf of Alaska. It states the hearing conducted by the Alaska Legislature's House special committee on fisheries on the status and management of herring in Southeast Alaska during which Tlingit fisherman Clarence Jackson of Kake notes the disappearance of herring in his lifetime. Information on herring ecology based from Native and non-Native individuals from Southeast communities and archaeological site reports reveal that non-Natives in Southeast Alaska have exploited herring with the development of a herring reduction plant. It underscores the need for …
Local Fragmentation As Immigration Regulation, Rick Su
Local Fragmentation As Immigration Regulation, Rick Su
Journal Articles
Immigration scholars have traditionally focused on the role of national borders and the significance of nation-state citizenship. At the same time, local government scholars have called attention to the significance of local boundaries, the consequence of municipal residency, and the influence of the two on the fragmentation of American society. This paper explores the interplay between these two mechanisms of spatial and community controls. Emphasizing their doctrinal and historic commonalities, this article suggests that the legal structure responsible for local fragmentation can be understood as second-order immigration regulation. It is a mechanism that allows for finer regulatory control than the …
Maximum Feasible Participation Of The Poor: New Governance, New Accountability, And A 21st Century War On The Sources Of Poverty, Tara J. Melish
Maximum Feasible Participation Of The Poor: New Governance, New Accountability, And A 21st Century War On The Sources Of Poverty, Tara J. Melish
Journal Articles
In 1964, President Lyndon B. Johnson called for a Nationwide War on the Sources of Poverty to “strike away the barriers to full participation” in our society. Central to that war was an understanding that given poverty’s complex and multi-layered causes, identifying, implementing, and monitoring solutions to it would require the “maximum feasible participation” of affected communities. Equally central, however, was an understanding that such decentralized problem-solving could not be fully effective without national-level orchestration and support. As such, an Office of Economic Opportunity was established – situated in the Executive Office of the President itself – to support, through …
Revitalizing Union Democracy: Labor Law, Bureaucracy, And Workplace Association, Matthew Dimick
Revitalizing Union Democracy: Labor Law, Bureaucracy, And Workplace Association, Matthew Dimick
Journal Articles
Do core doctrines of labor-relations law obstruct the internal democratic governance of labor unions in the United States? Union democracy is likely an essential precondition for the broader strategic and organizational changes unions must undertake in order to recruit new union members — the labor movement’s cardinal priority. Yet according to widely accepted wisdom, the weakness of democracy within labor unions is the unavoidable outcome of an “iron law of oligarchy” that operates in all such membership-based organizations. This Article challenges this conventional thinking and argues that the triumph of oligarchy over democracy in US labor unions is not inevitable, …
Copyright And The First Amendment: Comrades, Combatants, Or Uneasy Allies?, Joseph P. Bauer
Copyright And The First Amendment: Comrades, Combatants, Or Uneasy Allies?, Joseph P. Bauer
Journal Articles
The copyright regime and the First Amendment seek to promote the same goals. Both seek the creation and dissemination of more, better, and more diverse literary, pictorial, musical and other works. But, they use significantly different means to achieve those goals. The copyright laws afford to the creator of a work the exclusive right to reproduce, distribute, transform, and perform that work for an extended period of time. The First Amendment, on the other hand, proclaims that Congress "shall make no law...abridging the freedom of speech or of the press," thus at least nominally indicating that limitations on the reproduction …

Peninsula Medical School
Vestibular schwannomas (VS) arising sporadically or in patients with neurofibromatosis type 2 (NF2) consistently lack expression of Merlin, a tumor suppressor. Conventional treatment options include surgery and radiotherapy but there is no validated medical option. Recent evidence suggests that Merlin deficiency may result in abnormal activation of receptor tyrosine kinases (RTKs) and downstream signaling, promoting tumor growth. Although small-molecule RTK inhibitors are widely available for clinical use, no such therapy has been validated in patients with VS. To screen for RTK activation, surgical VS specimens from patients with and without NF2 were analyzed by phospho-RTK profiling arrays. Downstream signaling pathway …
