Destruction of the architectural and subsequently the functional integrity of the lung following pulmonary viral infections is attributable to both the extent of pathogen replication and to the host-generated inflammation associated with the recruitment of immune responses. The presence of antigenically disparate pulmonary viruses and the emergence of novel viruses assures the recurrence of lung damage with infection and resolution of each primary viral infection. Thus, there is a need to develop safe broad spectrum immunoprophylactic strategies capable of enhancing protective immune responses in the lung but which limits immune-mediated lung damage. The immunoprophylactic strategy described here utilizes a protein …

A Model For The Measurement And Presentation Of Participation Awareness In Online Groupware Systems, Greg Baatard Jan 2010

A Model For The Measurement And Presentation Of Participation Awareness In Online Groupware Systems, Greg Baatard

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

The need to support effective group work in online environments has become a prominent issue in both education and enterprise. Universities continue to adopt constructivist-based learning strategies which see learners engage in group work to build knowledge, coupled with an increase in online and distance learners. In enterprise, where group or team based work is commonplace, the prevalence of the Internet has seen the emergence of teams that collaborate wholly or partially online.

In response to this emergent need, groupware, software used to support online group work, has become widely used in both education and enterprise. Although based upon sound …

Conceptualising Bullying In An Aboriginal Context As Reported By The Yamaji Community, To Inform The Development Of A Bullying Prevention Program That Is Culturally Sensitive To The Needs Of Aboriginal Students, Juli Coffin

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

The Solid Kids Solid Schools project aimed to capture the unheard voices of Aboriginal children and community members on the issues surrounding ‘bullying’. In an Aboriginal context bullying is different and the outcomes are different, yet mainstream programs are utilized to combat the issue. We need to know how bullying is different for Aboriginal children and young people, why it is different and what does this difference mean in terms of addressing this issue in a school and community setting? A community based steering group guided the direction of this study and the larger Solid Kids Solid Schools project. Snowball …

Women As Leaders In Buddhism, Karma Lekshe Tsomo Phd Jan 2010

Women As Leaders In Buddhism, Karma Lekshe Tsomo Phd

Theology and Religious Studies: Faculty Scholarship

For Buddhists, the epitome of enlightened leadership is the Buddha himself. The Buddha, the “awakened one,” led by teaching a path to awakening that is open to all. The path to awakening – a process of purifying the mind of afflictions, such as greed, hatred, and ignorance – can be followed by women and men alike. Traditionally, however, the fact that the Buddha, the model of human perfection, was male seemed to imply to future generations that men were more somehow more capable of awakening than women. This impression was bolstered by the eight special rules attributed to the Buddha …

Business Review

Pakistan’s relationship with the International Monetary Fund during the 2000 – 2004 period was quite unique and distinctive. Unlike the earlier eight agreements that were concluded with the IMF during 1988-99 and were never implemented beyond the first tranche release it was only in this period that two successive agreements – a nine month Stand-by Arrangement (SBA) in the year 2000 followed by a three year Poverty Reduction and Growth Facility (PRGF) were successfully completed. All the sixteen reviews by IMF staff were completed and eleven successive tranches were drawn on time without any extension or interruption 1 . The …

Epistemic Context Of Strategic Decisions - Interpreting The Grammar Of Managerial Praxis, Ahmad Raza, Hasan Sohaib Murad Jan 2010

Epistemic Context Of Strategic Decisions - Interpreting The Grammar Of Managerial Praxis, Ahmad Raza, Hasan Sohaib Murad

Business Review

This paper makes a theoretical assertion that strategic decisions are deterministic and apriori cognitive programs, internalized by human actors through an epistemic context, generated by culturally contingent conditions. It is argued that, a pervasive worldview reverberates underneath the seemingly calm strategic attitude of the managerial leadership and, consequently shapes the grammar of managerial praxis. The leaders during their strategic engagements choose to decide on the basis of this deeply ingrained language of their respective worldviews, which have grown out of the collective symbolic knowledge of their respective societies. By analyzing three examples one each from society, economy and politics, which …

Mitigations Of Shame: Represented And Elicited Affect In Vietnam War Films Of The Late 1980s, Bryan D. Marinelli Jan 2010

Mitigations Of Shame: Represented And Elicited Affect In Vietnam War Films Of The Late 1980s, Bryan D. Marinelli

Open Access Dissertations

This dissertation investigates the extent to which select Vietnam War films of the late 1980s can be properly labeled as "shame-inducing texts." Beginning with an analysis of the ways in which shame has been represented and mitigated, the project then seeks to understand the degree to which these films elicited shame in viewing audiences. Chapter One delineates the properties of shame that are foundational to the study and offers a rationale for selecting Vietnam films of the late 1980s as focal texts. Chapter Two examines Full Metal Jacket's (1987) rendering of the methods used to neutralize shame in Marine recruits, …

An Empathetic Approach To Physical Education Teacher Education, Tony Monahan Jan 2010

An Empathetic Approach To Physical Education Teacher Education, Tony Monahan

Open Access Dissertations

The current crisis in societal obesity and other inactivity-related chronic health disorders has become a widespread concern in the United States. Physical Education (PE) with its propensity for physical activity has the potential to provide solutions to many chronic health issues. However, a large body of literature suggests that generations of students have been "turned off' to lifelong physical activity because of negative experiences in traditional PE classes. A more student-centered approach may be needed to ensure that all students have an opportunity to lead a healthy, physical life. The purpose of this research study was to determine the effect …

Rhetorics Of Place And Ecological Relationships: The Rhetorical Construction Of Narragansett Bay, Matthew Ortoleva Jan 2010

Rhetorics Of Place And Ecological Relationships: The Rhetorical Construction Of Narragansett Bay, Matthew Ortoleva

Open Access Dissertations

As an ethnographic study of how language and rhetorical acts are used to construct, challenge, and change ecological relationships to the Narragansett Bay watershed, this dissertation argues that there are three architectonic, master discourses that dominate the discursive domain of the Narragansett Bay watershed: the discourse of science, the discourse of economics, and the discourse of spirituality. These master discourses construct and authorize particular world-views, give human agents the vocabulary to speak about the world in particular ways, and produce multiple other sub-discourses, which in turn construct different ecological relationships to Narragansett Bay and lead to particular attitudes, beliefs, and …

Lipid Bilayer-Nanoparticle Interactions In Nanotoxicology And Nanomedicine, Yanjing Chen Jan 2010

Lipid Bilayer-Nanoparticle Interactions In Nanotoxicology And Nanomedicine, Yanjing Chen

Open Access Dissertations

Nanoparticle (NP) interactions that may destabilize cell membranes and cause toxicity can also be used to design and control therapeutic assemblies. Fundamentally examining interactions between NPs and cell membranes is crucial to understanding NP toxicity mechanisms and the development of safe and non-toxic NP-based commercial and therapeutic applications. In this dissertation it is demonstrated that self-assembled lipid bilayers can be employed as model membranes to determine NP interact ions. First, protocols were developed for examining hydrophobic and hydrophilic NP-bilayer interactions using lipid bilayer vesicles or liposomes. Second, interactions between liposomes and NPs were characterized by examining changes in liposome structure, …

Benthic Habitat Mapping And Assessment Using Organism-Sediment Relationships, Emily J. Shumchenia Jan 2010

Benthic Habitat Mapping And Assessment Using Organism-Sediment Relationships, Emily J. Shumchenia

Open Access Dissertations

The study of organism-sediment relationships involves characterizing a suite of biological and geological features that control the spatial and temporal patterns of the benthic landscape and the response of these ecosystems to natural and anthropogenic disturbance. Acknowledging this variability is essential for effective monitoring and management of all marine ecosystems, but especially coastal environments where anthropogenic stresses tend to dominate. This dissertation examines organism-sediment relationships to support habitat mapping and assessment in Greenwich Bay, a shallow sub-embayment within Narragansett Bay, Rhode Island, USA. Sediment profile imagery (SPI) played a prominent role in linking sediments, organisms and water quality in these …

Cambodian And Laotian Americans' Cultural Values And Attitudes Toward Seeking Professional Psychological Services, Manivone Thikeo Jan 2010

Cambodian And Laotian Americans' Cultural Values And Attitudes Toward Seeking Professional Psychological Services, Manivone Thikeo

Open Access Dissertations

Several studies have reported that Asian Americans, including Cambodian and Laotian Americans, tend to under utilize mental health services, both inpatient and outpatient although they display high levels of psychological problems related to significant psychological trauma experienced in their native land or while living in refugee camps. Underutilization may not be related to the lack of need but it may relate to cultural factors such as shame and stigma as well as acculturation and lack of health insurance. Although some Asian American research about help seeking exists, no previous research has specifically addressed this question with a Cambodian and Laotian …

The Preferences Of Commercial Fishermen To Supply Collaborative Research In New England: A Welfare Analysis, Joshua B. Wiersma Jan 2010

The Preferences Of Commercial Fishermen To Supply Collaborative Research In New England: A Welfare Analysis, Joshua B. Wiersma

The 2007 re-authorization of the Magnuson Stevens Fisheries Conservation and Management Act calls for greater participation by commercial fishermen in NOAA's collaborative research programs. The M-S Act lists a set of research priorities of particular importance to complete, collaboratively, with the help of commercial fishermen and their vessels. To gauge how willing commercial fishermen in New England are to help develop and execute the type of collaborative research (C R) deemed important by policy makers, an industry wide economic assessment of collaborative research was done based on a contingent valuation stated choice experiment (CF) mail survey. Fifteen hundred owner/captains of …

Lead Exposure, Aging And Biomarkers In Alzheimer's Disease, Aderemi Dosunmu Jan 2010

Lead Exposure, Aging And Biomarkers In Alzheimer's Disease, Aderemi Dosunmu

Open Access Dissertations

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease. To investigate AD risk factors, we reviewed epidemiologic case control studies and recent research for AD's connection to the environment. Next, we examined the number one risk factor in AD, aging. We compared and contrasted lifespan profiles of AD-associated mRNA and protein levels in monkeys and mice. The AD-related biomarkers were APP mRNA and protein; Aβ levels; specificity protein 1 (SP1); and the β-amyloid precursor cleaving enzyme (BACE1). In mice, APP and Sp1 mRNA and their protein products were elevated late in life; Aβ levels declined. In monkeys, APP, Sp1, and BACE1 …

Extreme Group Comparisons: Nature, Prevalence, And Impact On Psychological Research, David C. Ahern Jan 2010

Extreme Group Comparisons: Nature, Prevalence, And Impact On Psychological Research, David C. Ahern

Open Access Dissertations

Normative comparisons for psychological and neuropsychological measures, as well as predictions made from studies of specific populations, suffer when such groups are improperly constructed. It was posited such inappropriate group formation is common in psychological science, partly from a between-group failure to identify the clinical distinction of interest, and in part from a within-group failure to mirror the characteristics of the overall population by placing undue emphasis on group purity (that is, exclusion of participants with comorbid conditions). Furthermore, participants are often selected for group membership due to the extremity of the condition, eliminating diagnostic ambiguity but sacrificing generalizability to …

An Expectancy Theory Analysis Of Catch Shares: Identifying Outcomes, Preferences, And Potential Co-Management Changes In New England Groundfish Management, William D. Whitmore Jan 2010

An Expectancy Theory Analysis Of Catch Shares: Identifying Outcomes, Preferences, And Potential Co-Management Changes In New England Groundfish Management, William D. Whitmore

Open Access Dissertations

Catch shares have been implemented through a variety of limited access privilege programs, including individual transferable quotas (ITQs) and co-operatives. The New England Fishery Management Council recently approved 19 fishing cooperatives, referred to as sectors, in Amendment 16 to the Northeast Multispecies Fishery Management Plan. Despite requests by fishing industry members to consider an ITQ program in Amendment 16, a referendum requirement in the Magnuson Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act and time constraints for implementing Amendment 16 were cited as reasons ITQs were not considered for Amendment 16. A mail survey was used to compare different outcomes fishermen and …

Physical And Chemical Interactions Between Marine Phytoplankton And Particle-Colonizing Bacteria, Jason Robert Graff Jan 2010

Physical And Chemical Interactions Between Marine Phytoplankton And Particle-Colonizing Bacteria, Jason Robert Graff

Open Access Dissertations

It is inherently difficult to study the direct interactions between marine microbes due to the size of the organisms and microscale environments in which they exist. Recent evidence suggests that the direct associations between marine phytoplankton and particle-colonizing bacteria can influence marine microbial community succession, microalgal primary production, toxin production by marine phytoplankton, and have potential implications for human health. The goal of this dissertation was to elucidate some of the physical and chemical mechanisms that regulate microbial interactions, particularly the colonization of phytoplankton and other marine particles by bacteria. To accomplish these goals, I used a creative and multi-disciplinary …

Antipsychotic treatment was examined with respect to all …

The Sexual Assault Of Intoxicated Women, Janine Benedet Jan 2010

The Sexual Assault Of Intoxicated Women, Janine Benedet

All Faculty Publications

This article considers how the criminal law of sexual assault in Canada deals with cases of women who have been consuming intoxicants (e.g. alcohol and or drugs). In particular, it considers under what circumstances the doctrines of incapacity to consent and involuntariness have been applied to cases in which the complainant was impaired by alcohol or drugs. It also reflects on problems of proof in such cases. Finally, it examines whether the treatment of this class of complaints tells us anything about the law’s understanding of consent, and capacity to consent, more generally, in the context of competing social understandings …
