Exploring The Impact Of Race On Mental Health Service Utilization Among African Americans And Whites With Severe Mental Illness, Michelle Hampton, Linda Chafetz, Mary White

Faculty Publications

BACKGROUND: Disparities among African Americans and Whites with severe mental illness have been identified in numerous studies. Yet it remains unknown if disparities are associated with race or other vulnerabilities common to this population. OBJECTIVES: This study used the Behavioral Model for Vulnerable Populations to examine mental health service utilization among 155 African Americans and Whites with severe mental illness for 12 months after discharge from a residential crisis program. DESIGN: This cross-sectional study was a secondary analysis of data from a randomized trial. RESULTS: Race did not emerge as a significant predictor of mental health service utilization. Factors associated …

Risk And Farmers' Decisions To Farm Organically: The Case Of Devon (Uk), Saer Lssa Barhoum Jan 2010

Risk And Farmers' Decisions To Farm Organically: The Case Of Devon (Uk), Saer Lssa Barhoum

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses

Over the past few decades, the organic sector in most developed countries has flourished. Growth in the sector has been paralleled by a substantial amount of research on several arenas (sec Cobb et al. 1999; Robles et al. 2005; Jackson and Lampkin 2008; Lobley et al. 2009c; among others). Reasons for adopting organic farming have been studied in a variety of instances (Padel 2001a). Although there is a considerable body of evidence that supports the distinctly 'risky nature' of organic farming, our identification and understanding of how this nature affects farmers' decisions whether or not to farm organically are limited …

The Partnership Approach To Environmental Governance: The Case Of The Moor Trees Partnership Network, Clive Bastin Jan 2010

The Partnership Approach To Environmental Governance: The Case Of The Moor Trees Partnership Network, Clive Bastin

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses

Academic discussion of policy-making and governing indicates a significant shift in the model of governance away from top-down state control to the bottom-up approach of engaging non-state actors (Goodwin and Painter, 1996; Jessop, 1998; Stoker, 1993, 1998). Central to governance theory are new forms of policy organisation, in effect, a shift from state monopoly of decision-making towards partnering with non-state (and, therefore, non-elected) actors for the formulation and delivery of sustainability objectives. It is argued that these partnerships are a key aspect of governance, which, in turn has become one of the main themes in environmental politics (Imrie and Raco, …

Challenging Compulsory Admission To Hospital Under The Mental Health Act 1983, Harry Perrin Jan 2010

Challenging Compulsory Admission To Hospital Under The Mental Health Act 1983, Harry Perrin

The Plymouth Law and Criminal Justice Review

The Mental Health Act 1983 provides for compulsory admission to hospital, under criteria designed to ensure individuals are not detained wrongly. This article examines the primary legal means by which compulsory admission can be challenged. Habeas corpus and judicial review offer means of examining the legality of a decision, based on the decision-making procedure. The efficacy of these mechanisms in mental health cases has come under scrutiny from the European Court of Human Rights. The Mental Health Review Tribunal conversely is equipped to examine legality based on the merits of the decision. The potential for conflict here, however, lies in …

The Concept Of Consent Under The Sexual Offences Act 2003, Jacqueline Scott Jan 2010

The Concept Of Consent Under The Sexual Offences Act 2003, Jacqueline Scott

The Plymouth Law and Criminal Justice Review

The concept of consent is fundamental in considering the crime of rape under the Sexual Offences Act 2003 (SOA). Consent was placed on a statutory footing for the first time by the SOA which defines consent alongside evidential and conclusive presumptions under sections 74-76, respectively. This article explores the position that unfortunately, neither significant clarity nor enhanced protection appears to have been embraced or achieved by the incorporation of consent.

Cultural Responses To Volcanic Hazards On Mt Merapi, Indonesia, Katherine Helen Mary Donovan Jan 2010

Cultural Responses To Volcanic Hazards On Mt Merapi, Indonesia, Katherine Helen Mary Donovan

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses

Over the last decade an interdisciplinary science has evolved in order to reduce the impact of natural hazards by incorporating social sciences into physical hazard studies. This science has revealed that a community's ability to anticipate, cope with and recover from the impact of natural hazards relies upon that society's vulnerability. The concept of vulnerability has conventionally focussed on certain key social statistics such as wealth, age and gender, yet there is another element of vulnerability: the component of culture. In this study culture refers to the oral histories, taboos, ceremonies and legends that are created in order to explain, …

Aqueous And Solid Phase Interactions Of Radionuclides With Organic Complexing Agents, Estela Reinoso-Maset Jan 2010

Aqueous And Solid Phase Interactions Of Radionuclides With Organic Complexing Agents, Estela Reinoso-Maset

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses

Characterising the geochemistry and speciation of major contaminant radionuclides is crucial in order to understand their behaviour and migration in complex environmental systems. Organic complexing agents used in nuclear decontamination have been found to enhance migration of radionuclides at contaminated sites; however, the mechanisms of the interactions in complex environments are poorly understood. In this work, radionuclide speciation and sorption behaviour were investigated in order to identify interactions between four key radionuclides with different oxidation states (Cs(I) and Sr(II) as important fission products; Th(IV) and U(VI) as representative actinides), three anthropogenic organic complexing agents with different denticities (EDTA, NTA and …

Lrw Program Design: A Manifesto For The Future, Eric Easton Jan 2010

Lrw Program Design: A Manifesto For The Future, Eric Easton

All Faculty Scholarship

All of us have, at one time or another, had occasion to consider, or reconsider, our program model. The trigger may have been a new dean; the prospect of a sabbatical inspection; a budget crisis or financial windfall; a faculty champion or saboteur; some-thing we learned at a Legal Writing Institute (LWI) or Association of Legal Writing Directors conference; or merely the cycle of bureaucratic reorganization. Those reconsiderations have led to a great diversity of Legal Research and Writing (LRW) program models: two-, three-, four-, and all-semester programs; adjunct-, contract-, and tenure-track staffing; and directors, co-directors, and no directors. Reconsiderations …

Poverty Revenue: The Subversion Of Fiscal Federalism, Daniel L. Hatcher Jan 2010

Poverty Revenue: The Subversion Of Fiscal Federalism, Daniel L. Hatcher

All Faculty Scholarship

Fiscal federalism is a staple of economic theory that underlies the federal-state partnership in the nation‘s largest federal grant-in-aid programs, such as Medicaid and Title IV-E Foster Care. The theory is founded on a simple principle, the collaboration of the federal government‘s financial power and stability and state governments‘ ability to deliver services tailored to regional needs. However, the theory ignores a vast industry that has grown around the flow of federal funds. In addition to providing operational and consulting services for all aspects of government aid, this poverty industry - which usurps inherently governmental functions and is rife with …

Balancing Liberty, Dignity And Safety: The Impact Of Domestic Violence Lethality Screening, Margaret E. Johnson Jan 2010

Balancing Liberty, Dignity And Safety: The Impact Of Domestic Violence Lethality Screening, Margaret E. Johnson

All Faculty Scholarship

This Article undertakes the first ever analysis of the consequences of the justice and legal system’s extensive use of lethality assessment tools for women subjected to abuse. An increasing number of states are now requiring their police, prosecutors, civil attorneys, advocates, service providers, and court personnel to assess women in order to obtain a score that indicates the woman’s lethality risk because of domestic violence. The mandated danger assessment screen of all women subjected to violence focuses only on the risk of homicide and thereby limits the definition of what is domestic violence. In addition, the accompanying protocol for the …

New Options For State Indirect Purchaser Legislation: Protecting The Real Victims Of Antitrust Violations, Robert H. Lande Jan 2010

New Options For State Indirect Purchaser Legislation: Protecting The Real Victims Of Antitrust Violations, Robert H. Lande

All Faculty Scholarship

In Illinois Brick v. Illinois Co., the Supreme Court held that, under federal antitrust law, only direct purchasers have standing to sue antitrust violators for damages. Since most products travel through one or more intermediaries before reaching consumers, this decision left most true victims of illegal cartels and other antitrust violations without a remedy to compensate them. Illinois Brick Co. also had the effect of undermining the objective of optimal deterrence of antitrust violations-because direct purchasers often have a suboptimal incentive to sue, the Court's decision often allows violators to escape paying significant damages. For this reason firms are insufficiently …

Numerical Models For Natural Fibre Composites With Stochastic Properties, Amandeep Singh Virk Jan 2010

Numerical Models For Natural Fibre Composites With Stochastic Properties, Amandeep Singh Virk

Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses

Natural fibres are increasingly being considered as the reinforcement for polymer matrix composites as they are perceived to be sustainable being a renewable resource. However, they suffer from higher variability in mechanical properties and concerns about their long-term durability in a moist environment. In this study the physical properties of the jute fibres were characterised, the fibre length distribution was determined and the fibre cross-section was analysed using digital images. It was observed that the true fibre area followed a log-normal distribution. The fibre area distribution for different geometrical shapes was estimated and the error in the estimated area of …

Resilience Against Death Anxiety In Relationship To Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder And Psychiatric Co-Morbidity, Mark Hoelterhoff Jan 2010

Resilience Against Death Anxiety In Relationship To Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder And Psychiatric Co-Morbidity, Mark Hoelterhoff

Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses

Research was conducted examining death anxiety from existential, psychodynamic, cognitive and sociological perspectives. The intent was to consider the role of death anxiety on well-being; four studies were conducted to examine how death anxiety influenced PTSD and mental health among people who have experienced a life-threatening event. These studies were conducted using undergraduate university students in Lithuania. The first study used a mixed-method design and in phase 1, participants (N=97) completed self-report questionnaires that gathered information on demographics, death anxiety, trauma and well-being. Results indicated a significant correlation between death anxiety and PTSD, but not psychiatric co-morbidity. Phase 2 attempted …

Effects Of Oil Exposure And Oil-Related Compounds On The Immune System Of The Arctic And Temperate Scallops, Chlamysislandica And Pecten Maximus, Marie Lyn Lynhannam Jan 2010

Effects Of Oil Exposure And Oil-Related Compounds On The Immune System Of The Arctic And Temperate Scallops, Chlamysislandica And Pecten Maximus, Marie Lyn Lynhannam

Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses

With the current expansion of offshore oil activities in Arctic regions, there is an urgent need to establish the potential effects of oil-related compounds on Arctic organisms. The scallop Chlamys islandica is distributed throughout the sub-Arctic and has been proposed as a sentinel species for this region. In addition, the temperate scallop Pecten maximus occurs in regions of oil activity and, with increasing sea temperatures, the limit of its distribution may extend further into sub-Arctic regions. P. maximus also accumulates contaminants to a greater extent than the current temperate sentinel Mytilus edulis. A hierarchical approach, similar to that adopted to …

Factors Controlling The Quality And Safety Of Fish Using Mackerel (Scomber Scombrus) Shelf-Life Model In The Context Of Sanitary And Phytosanitary (Sps) Measures For The Gambian Fisheries., Bamba A.M. Banja

Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses

Food quality, including safety, is a major concern facing the food industry today. The effects of sanitary and phytosanitary (SPS) measures in the fisheries sector of The Gambia including the factors affecting the safety and spoilage of fish were investigated. Effects of SPS measures are important impediments for exporting fish and fishery products originating from The Gambia to the international food commodity trade. The inadequate scientific and technical expertise in addition to the general lack of information and finance are the major contributing factors to these impediments. The Government must build capacity, improve infrastructure and increase the number of trained …

Conditional Reasoning In Autism Spectrum Disorder: Activation And Integration Of Knowledge And Belief., Becky Stancer Jan 2010

Conditional Reasoning In Autism Spectrum Disorder: Activation And Integration Of Knowledge And Belief., Becky Stancer

Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses

Reasoning from all knowledge and belief is an adaptive approach to thinking about the world. It has been robustly shown that conditional ‘if then’ reasoning with everyday content is influenced by the background knowledge an individual has available. If we are presented with the statement ‘if it rains, then John will get wet’ then we are told that it is raining and asked if John will get wet, we may consider a number of possibilities before answering the question; perhaps John has an umbrella or is sheltered from the rain. Hence, when engaged in conditional reasoning of this sort people …

Communicating Marine Environmental Health: Connecting Science, Social And Policy Values, Rebecca Louise Jefferson Jan 2010

Communicating Marine Environmental Health: Connecting Science, Social And Policy Values, Rebecca Louise Jefferson

Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses

Human activities are degrading marine ecosystems and undermining the ecological functions and processes which provide valued goods and services. European and UK marine policy developments aim to implement the Ecosystem Approach to support better management of activities and maintain the health of regional seas. Current public perceptions of the UK marine environment are overwhelmingly negative, creating a barrier to engaging society with marine environmental issues and policy. This thesis conducts a study of the attributes of a suite of 72 UK marine species to identify those which contribute most to marine ecological health. The findings show that structurally complex species …

A Narrative In Relief: The Historiography Of English Modern Painting (1910-1915), From The 1910s To The 1950s, Carol Frances Brand Jan 2010

A Narrative In Relief: The Historiography Of English Modern Painting (1910-1915), From The 1910s To The 1950s, Carol Frances Brand

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

The groups of painters in England who experimented with new visual expressions of modernity between 1910 and 1915 are the subject of this historiographical research. More precisely, the accounts of Vorticism, Bloomsbury post-Impressionism and the modern art of painters associated with Sickert, (principally the Camden Town Group), have been critically examined over a forty year period in order to trace the narrative of their place in contemporary art criticism and their entry into histories of what soon became the recent past. This textually-based methodology has produced an insight into the forces acting upon the critical reception of a particular period …

An Evaluation Of The Relative Influences Of Elevated Temperature And Ocean Acidification On Processes Influencing The Distribution Of Intertidal Barnacles, Helen Sarah Findlay Jan 2010

An Evaluation Of The Relative Influences Of Elevated Temperature And Ocean Acidification On Processes Influencing The Distribution Of Intertidal Barnacles, Helen Sarah Findlay

Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses

Ocean acidification and climate change are occurring as a result of anthropogenic release of carbon dioxide (C02) into the atmosphere. Changes in climate and ocean chemistry are occurring concomitantly and at a faster rate than previously recorded in Earth's history, yet little is understood about how they will influence the population dynamics and ecology of many marine organisms. The barnacle Semibalanus balanoides is a major space occupier on rocky shores in northern Europe and hence changes in its population ecology can have a broad influence on other species. An intertidal high CO2 microcosm system was developed in order to determine …

In Momentum: The Navigation, Narration, And Negotiation Of Continuing Professional Development By Mid-Career Artists In South West England, Karen Mary Smith Jan 2010

In Momentum: The Navigation, Narration, And Negotiation Of Continuing Professional Development By Mid-Career Artists In South West England, Karen Mary Smith

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

This thesis explores the Continuing Professional Development (CPD) of mid-career artists in England and the South West of England in particular during 2000 to 2010. It identifies what their needs are and asks what CPD means to them; how they navigate their careers through their practice; how they articulate their needs; and how they negotiate to fulfil those needs. It examines to what extent the providers’ thinking about, and provision of, CPD in the region is aligned with the needs of the artists themselves. The individual narratives of artists are represented at the centre of this research. The research was …

An Exploration Into How Students With Dyslexia Identify With Their Condition, With Particular Reference To The Tensions Which Surround Public And Private Perceptions Of Dyslexia, Deborah A Shenton Jan 2010

An Exploration Into How Students With Dyslexia Identify With Their Condition, With Particular Reference To The Tensions Which Surround Public And Private Perceptions Of Dyslexia, Deborah A Shenton

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

This thesis, discusses the implications of the social and private constructions of dyslexia for the individual with dyslexia and the dyslexic identity. In view of the difficulties inherent in higher education this study interviews people with dyslexia who successfully entered degree courses at university. It explores their experiences in an effort to gain an understanding of how people with dyslexia form an identity. Issues surrounding 'dyslexia' have increasingly focused on its credibility as a 'genuine' medical and disabling condition. The social expectations of the condition and the differing social and medical models of conditions warranting the label 'disability' have complicated …

R V Southampton And Fatal Medical Negligence: An Anomaly Or A Sign Of Things To Come?, Gavin Ruddy Jan 2010

R V Southampton And Fatal Medical Negligence: An Anomaly Or A Sign Of Things To Come?, Gavin Ruddy

The Plymouth Law and Criminal Justice Review

A review of statistics concerning fatal medical negligence in the NHS shows that, despite fears of a 'compensation culture' and the right to life protected by Human Rights legislation, only about one in every 1,000 such cases is investigated by the courts. This appears to be largely due to very poor reporting of adverse incidents by health authorities. However, as a result of recent healthcare scandals, the reporting of incidents is expected to significantly increase in the near future. The case of R v Southampton University Hospitals NHS Trust 2006 illustrates the striking effect that enhanced levels of scrutiny can …

Purdy: The First Step On The Road Towards Assisted Suicide, Laura Sayer Jan 2010

Purdy: The First Step On The Road Towards Assisted Suicide, Laura Sayer

The Plymouth Law and Criminal Justice Review

This article considers how likely it is that English law will be amended in the near future to provide legal recognition and acceptance of assisted suicide in light of the 2009 House of Lords decision in Purdy. The extent to which Purdy has acted as a catalyst to generate formal legislative amendment is explored in the light of recent attempts to achieve a change in the law. Within this context the underlying and conflicting arguments of those in support and against the legalisation of assisted suicide are examined.

Supply Chains And Porous Boundaries: The Disaggregation Of Legal Services, Milton C. Regan, Palmer T. Heenan Jan 2010

Supply Chains And Porous Boundaries: The Disaggregation Of Legal Services, Milton C. Regan, Palmer T. Heenan

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

The economic downturn has had significant effects on law firms, and is causing many of them to rethink some basic assumptions about how they operate. In important respects, however, the downturn has simply intensified the effects of some deeper trends that preceded it, which are likely to continue after any recovery that may occur.

This paper explores one of these trends, which is corporate client insistence that law firms “disaggregate” their services into discrete tasks that can be delegated to the least costly providers who can perform them. With advances in communications technology, there is increasing likelihood that some of …

The Parent As (Mere) Educational Trustee: Whose Education Is It, Anyway?, Jeffrey Shulman Jan 2010

The Parent As (Mere) Educational Trustee: Whose Education Is It, Anyway?, Jeffrey Shulman

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

The purpose of this Article is two-fold. First, the Article argues that the parent’s right to educate his or her children is strictly circumscribed by the parent’s duty to ensure that children learn habits of critical reasoning and reflection. The law has long recognized that the state’s duty to educate children is superior to any parental right. Indeed, the “parentalist” position to the contrary rests on an inflation of rights that is, in fact, a radical departure from longstanding legal norms. Indeed, at common law the parent had “a sacred right” to the custody of his child, and the parent’s …
